You ain't NEVER gotta feel bad dancing or nodding your head to that solo Stevie. The song is fucked up but that is one of the greatest solos ever recorded. Kirk Hammett is a god damn legend and that particular guitar solo is a big part of why. Far from the only reason, but one of the main ones.

Snooty, elitist, with their noses up in the air, sitting on their high horses dictating to the world what is or isn't allowed to be called Metal. What I know is there are a lot of legendary rock guitarists that list Hammett in their top 5/10/20 of all time. The song is inspired by the movie "Johnny Get Your Gun". The video includes clips from the movie. The movie is about a man who is injured in war and loses almost all of his senses. As he struggles with his emotions and his descent into insanity, he fights to maintain his awareness of reality and communicate with the hospital staff
The movie is quite impactful, but slow moving along in the film and I think that has kept it away from most people, but I enjoyed the movie a lot.

i seen Metallica live at an outdoor concert, they waited untill it got dark to play this song. the explosions from the war scenes were done with pyrotechnics. it was a surreal moment.

Same. I saw them when they headlined one of the nights at a festival and it was a dark hot night with the opening playing and the explosions going off. It was epic but it also really put into perspective what it would be like to be in the dark in a warzone when you cant see where shots are coming from and explosions around you. It was a pretty eye-opening thing.

You’re exactly right. The song is inspired by the movie Johnny Got His Gun based on the anti-war novel written by Dalton Trumbo in 1939. It’s about the horror of war as exemplified by the young devastatingly injured young man lying in the bed who lost all of limbs, his vision and hearing in a WWI battle. The doctors think him unaware but that’s not true. He’s aware of everything. An extraordinarily hard to read, excellent book and Dalton Trumbo was an extraordinary man.

Metallica said the video was inspired by the movie , that the song came from hettfield imaging himself or someone as only a brain , they used movie clips because it fit so well , but they didn’t write it with that novel or movie in mind . They ended up having to buy the rights to it to make the video .

I read the book in high school in the late 60s simply because it had once been banned and it affected me profoundly then and to this day.

I always tell people when they listen to metal {Metallica} let the music talk to you as the music alone is the voice. 8:58 in this video you did what we all do. Close the eyes and take in the sound of the voice. Lyrics are just an extra when it comes to metal. I will ask you one time to listen to three of the greatest instrumentals from them "Orion" Call of Ktulu and (Anesthesia)-Pulling Teeth " The music will speak to you and you will feel it. The Blues was about getting certain feelings out and sometimes it made you dance. Thrash Metal was all about getting out feelings as well. The kind that would keep you up at night or make you explode if you didn't get them out. And we moshed and stood and banged our heads in time to the beat, so in essence, dancing in our own way. We were a pissed off generation. It's why as the years passed you saw gangster rappers and metalheads making music together. The things talked about may have been a little different but the raw aggression and passion was very much the same. As was the prolific lyrics. Thrash moves fast so it needed a ton of lyrics.

This has been my favorite song for 30 years.
The song was inspired by an old book/movie called “Johnny Got His Gun” about a WW1 vet that gets shredded by an explosive cannon shell. He loses his arms and legs and most of his face and is kept alive, but wants to die rather than live on as on object of curiosity.
Metallica was so inspired by the movie for the writing of this song that they tracked down and bought the full movie rights to the film so they could use it extensively in the official video.

Yeah this song will go down as a musical holy grail.
Although the story was changed enough that they can say legally Johny got his gun was not real the subject that was the main character was real. I've seen the photos of the man. No. The Boy, He was not even old enough to order a beer when he shipped out in 1917 for Europ and WW1. He stepped on a mine, the blast tore apart his legs and arms and shatters his jaw complete removing it, sending the pieces back and up. They destroyed his eyes tor up his vocal box, and due to the over pressurization from the blast his ear drums where destroyed. Both his arms and both legs where so torn they had to be completely removed. At the Aid station no one thought he would live to get to the hospital, but he did. Then the Docters where sure the boy would die before being treated but he held on for triage and they stabilized him and closed up most of the bad wounds. Then when the next surgery began, they wanted to halt it because they knew his quality of life would have been abysmal, but they were told that he would likely not survive but proceeding would allow the doctors to attempt new procedures on him potentially saving others later. No one ever expected him to make it through the 6 major surgeries, yet he did. Some days later a nurse noted that the boy was rhythmically moving his head in patters. She told the attending doctor who discovered by looking at the boy's chart he was in the Signel core and thus knew morse code. They contacted the boys CO, but the unit was too far away, so the local command sent a telegraph operator to help figure out if the boy was actually talking. He was communicating but before the solder who was righting out what was being signaled could right it out, he ran out of the room and threw up. Then he refused to return and told the Docters he was righting up a report on them for cruelty. If one was righten up its lost amongst the thousands like it. Anyway, the poor boy was signaling ( -.- .. .-.. .-.. -- . .-.-.- .--. .-.. . .- ... -.- .. .-.. .-.. -- . .-.-.- )"Kill me, Pleas Kill Me" over and over. The reports get sketchy after that. He was eventually shipped out to the states, but some say he finely perished in transit. His story, highly embellished was then made into an antiwar movie in the 70s called Johny got his gun. While the story over time may have been embellished for others political ends the harsh reality of what I saw in those old photos was haunting beyond measure. This song did a good job reminding people of just how horrible men can treat one another.

One talks about a soldier who gets paralyzed and lives in a permanent vegetable state where he can't even wake up from the dreams and nightmare of his existence.
They also use it to show how our brave soldiers are sacrificed by politicians, military officers and the outcome of it in the video.
Disposable Heroes talks from the perspective of the politician telling the soldiers to die.
One talks the aftermath of a war injury.
For whom the bell tolls talks about the battle itself.
Confusion talks about the PTSD and mental instability soldiers face after going to war and coming back home messed up.

7:45 is the Eureka moment. It clicked perfectly for you. Although I probably overplayed it back in the 80's and 90's to the point where it lost its appeal, these reaction videos, 30 years later, allow me to observe other people's first listen and reaction, and rediscover my own appreciation and original love for this song.

One is one of the greatest metal songs of all time. If not the best metal song of all time. The solos are perfect and take genuine skill to play, let alone master. The song structure in fantastic, the lyrics are so metal but also deep and have a message. The buildup and payoff in this song is just unlike anything else. Hearing it for the first time is truly an experience.

I feel this song is about mental health. That may not be how everyone else perseveres it. But coming from someone who suffers from mental illness. This song connect's with me on every level.

This song almost has electricity when it begins to crescendo. Just an accumulation of lightning, fire, emotion and it becomes alive, like a dragon made out of those elements that you’re riding. It’s such a good ride. It’s really hard not to feel those lyrics and hear those drums and guitar go off and not just go along for the ride.
I love seeing people open their minds to other types of music ad being surprised at what they like. Music is just like that.
