Stevie you are a master at breaking down bars and lyrics. I’ve heard this song like 800 times and you broke it down better than I could in one listen. You’re in a class of your own among all the “reactors” in terms of getting in the artist’s mind space.
So many songs I have seen him catch things that I missed listening to the song hundreds of times, and I'm usually the one amongst people I know that catches things.
This right here. I’ve been listening to this song since I was a kid (I’m 28) and learned what it was about by someone listening for their first time. Stevie’s a boss.
“Screaming” such a bullshit stereotype!! It’s just only one thing in metal, and not everybody is doing it, and everybody doesn’t do it the same way, style, phrasing!! It’s just a small shit, yes, some sub-genres do it more than the others, but metal is a very wide genre with complex and creative composition and songwriting! You can see metal as the sum of all antitheses! Fast, and slow, heavy, and soft, melodic, and rhythmic, vocal fries, and clean vocals, operatic wide range voices, and gritty vocals!!
I absolutely love how you stop to understand and appreciate what us rock fans are drawn to relate to from a young age reaching for an outlet suppose just as young kids in America are drawn to hip/hop. I've never watched any other reaction video host that REALLY strives to understand like you do and its beautiful to watch. Thankyou
Both lyric and official video, from what I have seen of other reactors, for this song specifically you have to learn the song first or the video will overwhelm.

@@lewokecrybabyjames5828 So a band needs to stay the same way forever? How can you claim you like it "as a music lover" but not as a Metallica fan? That shit isn't logical at all.

One thing to appreciate about older music genres is the talent it takes to write the lyrics, play the instruments and sing...and no autotune. When you start to appreciate those things, you'll enjoy the music even more! Keep on keepin on!

Love the breakdown!! I see it in a lot of different ways. Could be family, could be a job someone got, could be religion, could be a group of friends you made at a young age that he couldn't break free from. I love this song. You don’t have to like a genre of music to appreciate it. And it’s great that you are expanding your life by delving into other types of music. I think listening to and appreciating different kinds of music or anything that’s out of the norm in our lives makes us better people and better to each other. And justice for all the whole album is mind blowing aggressive is how we love our heavy metal ps seen them 2x in the 90s still thrashing and I am 59 yrs old love your reaction and understanding of real music sold my soul for Rock and Roll 🤘
This song described the first 40 years of my life and played a huge role in my music list. Took me moving almost 2000 miles away from my family to finally drop some of the rage and hatred I felt towards them. Raised by my psycho grandparents who beat me daily in the name of God, told I wasnt good enough for him so he turned his back on me. Told me my parents would die in prison (which is where they were) and it was my fault. Parents get out and its always my sister that is the favorite, I'd get laughed at to my face if I ever asked for anything, any sort of help at all. Left California a defeated broken man and moved to Kansas to start over. Finally pulling myself off the ground and finding happiness in life. I have learned forgiveness, but sadly not the ability to forget. This and R.E.M.'s Losing My Religion were huge for me growing up. (the grandfather that beat me daily in the name of God happened to be a pastor)
Yep, as soon as he was born (new blood joining the Earth) he was subdued into this way of life we're all stuck in. All of the special things inside of him, he never got to let out for everyone to see, so he never got to be himself as a young prince. When he becomes king, he's so bitter and regretful that he wasted his life trying to conform and fit the mold of others, that he just doesn't care anymore since he didn't get to live his personal truth. I think the "thee" he's referring to is society as a whole, or whatever obstacle is preventing people from being truly free. And because of that oppression, no matter how major or minor, they're forever unforgiven for holding us back. That's how I took it - and waaaaaay back in middle school, our literature teacher broke this down from her perspective (and she was a huge metal fan lol).
This song is a tragedy. He vows that from this day his will they'll never take away, but in the end he dubs himself unforgiven and rots away as an old man. He never actually breaks free of his chains, even though he so desperately desires to.
It hits harder the more you listen man. I love this shit. Your reactions to music I grew up with is awesome. You feel what I felt first time hearing it. you pay attention to the lyrics aside from the music. And that's Good shit.
Bro I grew up on this shit and it went over my head until I woke the fuck up! It came on the radio a week ago or something, and I caught it. Metallica can tell a story bro! He's breaking the cypher. The scapegoat breaking the curse on his blood line.

You can literally apply the meaning of the lyrics to just about any aspect of life whether it about culture, religion politics, personal relationships. This is one of my favorite Metallica songs. And one of their better known and loved tracks.
Awesome seeing somebody see these songs for the first time and really dive into the lyrics. This is the first of a trilogy, by the way, and they get even better. Wait til you hit #3!
Here's what ppl who think metallica is simpler than some of these "harder" metal bands are missing about their complexity and beauty in how they write: Take the 2nd verse, call to the time signature they are on, and the switch-ups therein. Instead of using end-of-the-line rhyming, there's a soft rhyme. "A tired man they see no longer caaares" then it's soft rhymed to a half-step on the next line "The old man then PREPARES to die regretfully, that old man here is me." They matched this to how they flow musically sometimes. There's countless times this happens in all their music but knowing how/when to describe it in a way others may understand, especially through text and not speech, is difficult. That audible "fitting" of how the song flows and peaks and valleys of just "what your ears tell you" is what makes metallica the best, they fit shit together in ways that just sounds awesome, but it's often hard to explain to those who don't just feel it. I saw a moment where I thought I might be able to catch it properly and verbalize it. I guess if you get it, you get it.
The final play when those who treated you with malace seek solice and resolution on your death bed. Your final words leave them stung. "I dub thee unforggiven."
It's crazy how you could have been listening to Metallica for years in your teenager years & as a non-first tongue english speaker, you only realize later the meaning of the lyrics. Metallica for sure got bars bro, so much richness i was already feeling in their music but now thru experiencing their lyrics as my english is better, it's even more incredible. Really nice breakdown :)
James wrote this about the super strict Christian Scientist family he came from. His mom and dad were so devout Christian scientists that James wasn't allowed to attend health class in school because his parents didn't believe in medicine. So this is kind of his story and how he felt growing up.
