@blitz3643 I don't think it's that at all. I think it's definitely produced better, 10 years vocally James Hetfield sounds fantastic and better than 81' imo. But he's done enough to be a fan, you don't have to listen to every album to be one! Seriously that's wrong. 💯

Black album isnt even a close 2nd to MOP, RTL, AJFA. Metallica wouldn't have made it with the early fans of THRASH METAL and they basically turned their backs on the music thatade them. That being said there are a few good songs on this album. So I don't completely hate it but it's NOTHING compared to the first 4 albums

According to James, this is the most personal song he has written by far. It's about his own life and personal struggles. This song is actually the first of a trilogy (it's pretty obvious if you look into their discography) the other two songs are The Unforgiven II and The Unforgiven III, from the albums Reload and Death Magnetic

What makes this trilogy so special is that each song has its own unique sound and style while still being thematically related. Listening to the trilogy in order is a fantastic way to experience Metallica's musical evolution and experimentation over time.

Oh, my primary school teacher (1990-2000), who taught us maths, physics, technology (manual work - I don't know how to translate it, in these classes we probably learned everything that was of practical importance :-)) and occasionally physical education and history (it was a very small rural school in Poland) was (and probably still is) a huge Metallica fan. He used to play us whole albums during many lessons - on such a small old single-cassette radio-magnetophone. He was also a DJ in general, musically setting up discos, various school events and weddings. etc. He introduced us to many a metal, rock band, but he also taught us that tastes vary, that all musical skills, talents, backgrounds should be respected. We listened to the radio, created our own charts...eh, beautiful times.
Sorry for such a long post, I was flooded by a wave of memories :-) I enjoy watching the reactions of today's young people to Metallica's songs. It's a bit like rediscovering this music. 👍I will always associate Metallica with the wonderful years of primary school, carefree childhood in a village hidden among fields and forests.

Next one is Unforgiven 2! I love your reactions, it's like me hearing them for the first time. Really great would be to see some reactions to their live concert versions too like "thing that should not be" - live in Seattle is another level. And as best as you can, could you try and ignore those who say either Black album or anything after it is not good. There are tens of millions of fans who love it all. It just so happens that a handful of trash niche lovers from the 80ies don't seem to like it.. but whatever. Metallica still keeps rocking in 2024! Metalrock Royalty.

I forgot to warn you that you would probably have some tears with this one. Only the serous old school Thrash metal heads were haters on the Black album. The vast majority of Metallica fans count it as the peak of their evolution, or at least among their top 5 albums. I, myself didn't really ever get past Cliff's tragic death, so as much as I loved and respected Jason's playing, could never place anything above Master of Puppets, but I absolutely respect people's opinions that this album and AJFA are some of Metallica's best work. Anyway, congrats on this great success. I looked back at your reaction to Master of Puppets again, and just smiled at where you were and where you are now. Much love. Keep it going.

First Metallica show was Monsters of Rock w/Van Halen, Dokken and Scorpions in '88 at The Cotton Bowl. Met them on the Black Album tour in January '92 in Dallas. No opening band, 3 encores!!! They played for 3 hours. Kirk walked to the edge of stage, looks down and mouths the words- **while playing Seek and Destroy, mind you**- "How ya doing?" Next thing we know we got invited backstage and hung out with them while they signed autographs after the show. They were super cool to us. Seen them live 12 times, most recently at Cowboys Stadium in August 2023 with the resurrection of what's left of Pantera. Good times. 🤘🏼

The Black Album really was a lightning in a jar moment. BUT it was such a departure from what came before it was jarring for some of the fans. True fans of Metallica have appreciated how they have evolved over the years - even St Anger has its place and that album was reviled when it came out (I disliked it at first) as the sound was so different but it has since grown on me. Metallica are a band who are not afraid to try something different which is exactly what they did with the black album. They were teenagers when they started so I think the changes represent their growth and maturity over the years.
You listen to whatever you want to! It's a joy seeing your reaction to songs I've loved for years.

I really, really recommend that if you go past the Black Album you do these songs first before going deeper: Spit Out The Bone, Cyanide (you did the live version already), My Apocalypse, Crown of Barbed Wire, Bleeding Me, Outlaw Torn. Those will make the post-Black album styles easier to digest. They changed their sound pretty much after every album, reinventing themselves constantly.

post black album is weird. quite a few stand out songs but you start having to dig around the doodoo a little bit. IMO it's Black Album followed by a spattering of good songs on some not so good albums until you hit Death Magnetic where they start to be more consistent again. Haven't heard much of 72 Seasons yet but I assume it follows the trend from the last 2.

It's all just one theme: forgiveness, or lack thereof. Each song has its own thing but looking at it closely, it's all a representation of where James was at that period, mentally speaking.
The first is angry, it's about someone else running his life, him not forgiving them. Reflects his upbringing and his anger
The second is about letting someone in, loved ones, family, etc, but still being confused and angry. Having grown but not quite being where you think you should be
The third is him post rehab. He realizes a lot of things were his fault, so he takes part of the blame too. He's matured and is where he needs to be.
Also, the solos are awesome for all 3

I couldn't explain the meaning behind this song any better. This song was the first song I heard from Metallica. I have so much in common with this song in relations to James upbringing. This was singing to my soul and why I believe it's Metallica's greatest song. Just because of it's powerful meaning and message behind it. Espeacially to these once young ears. I was 13 when I first heard this song. 1yr after it's release and it still sings to my soul 30+ years later.

People hate on this album because there was an expectation of Metallica to put out their standard " Metallica " music... BUT they ditched the standard and their fans ,whom had supported them for years and years, to make this beautifully produced pop rock album full of radio friendly singles to dip into the wallets of all those people that would have never listened their previous albums. And they were tired of making the overly difficult, intricate and complicated songs. They wanted easier, shorter and basically simple stuff to play. So this was a shock and a big FUCK YOU to the OG fans. Most of us have gotten over the disappointment since... but I still wonder... would this album have happened if Cliff Burton lived?? I SERIOUSLY doubt it. I appreciate this album today but hated it when it was released. And I never bought another album of theirs after And Justice For All... Which was the album that inspired me pick up the drum sticks and play. You asked, so I explained , from my perspective lol
