Very real so true. When the black album came out it was no where near at the time as earlier more as who I was at the time. Now it's genius. And experience of life so a bit more knowledge. James Hetfield of Metallica wrote 'The Unforgiven' about his parents... He had endured a difficult childhood under Christian science beliefs, his father left the family, and then his mom died from cancer after refusing treatments for her beliefs... It was hard becoming an introverted adult and discovering that the world in their view was a lie, and lead him to a path of alcohol abuse and reckless behavior... especially in Metallica's early days...
@@shanebrown4146 Different context... Maynard Keenan's mom Judith Marie was a devout Christian. She suffered a stroke in 1976, when Maynard was just 11 yrs old... and she was partially paralyzed for 27 years until her death. Maynard was perplexed by her devotion to religion, despite her difficult circumstances that likely affected Maynard as well... People do not understand that their problems (addictions, disease, handicaps) eventually become others' problems when they have to take care of them. Lex, you are a true music lover. You have such an open mind you realize if musicians are good, they're good. You allow for them to have different sounds and still acknowledge their greatness. You don't get mad if they experiment and try to develop and grow in their creativity. You don't compare apples to oranges, or think music is a competition. Metallica is lucky to have a fan like you. Thumbs up, sister.
As a teenager, this song to me was about a child being forced into a life that they did not want. Being controlled to live a specific life that one's parents deemed "correct" for a child. In the process stifling the freedom and independence and eventually crushing the spirit and soul of the child. Eventually, the child wakes up and realizes that they have been fighting against this all their life, but are powerless to prevent the eventual loss of their will, "this old man here is me". With their life now wasted and all potential to ever "see what might have been" they dub whoever destroyed them as "Unforgiven".
And if it turns out hell is very real all these comments are going to hit much differently. Religion is not "forced" on hardly anyone in American, that is just a flat out lie. There are always rare exceptions, but simple having to go to church as a kid is not forcing religion on anyone. Everyone grows and and does what they want to do as an adult. Most kids today do what they want to do as kids, they don't even have to wait to adulthood. The comments smell more of religious bigotry than anything, you all grew up and did whatever you wanted with your lives as adults.

I think the lyrics are pretty straight forward. A bitter old man reflecting on his life, all the things he didn't do, all the things that didn't become. Also sounds like he never got to really be himself, to be free. His whole life was a battle, but the last battle, death, he cannot win. "The old man then prepares to die regretfully. @@jasonpatrick5660 Yeah I guess that makes sense. In the beginning there's something about "the young boy learns their rules", referring to his christian science parents and their strict regime. Seeing them in concert is such an awesome experience. In my 20s I saw them about a dozen times. It's also different, saw them in an NFL stadium (Foxborough), and in MSG, both are awesome, and different -- 75k people or 20k people and you get the lights going off during Enter Sandman, and the lighters going up during Unforgiven. Definitely try to see them before they stop touring. Remember seeing them twice in 3 days -- driving 600 miles between concerts -- just because my friends scored tickets -- and I wasn't gonna say no. The hardcore Metallica fans might not agree but this is my favorite song by them. It has a lot more going on than most of their other stuff. This took a lot more talent to make imo.
So this song is part one of three that was done over years, this being the first is about that anger and rebellion of feeling oppressed in your youth from your family or society so he can’t forgive them, the second one is about middle life where his relationships are not satisfactory and he sees his anger and betrayal from his lover and she is unforgivable also, in the third song from the viewpoint of an older man that is reflecting on his life realizing he has blamed everyone for his failures and holding him back but in fact it was him that is to blame for his decisions and failures and finally realizes he is actually the person he can never forgive.

Oh awesome. Another Metallica reaction video. Just what the world needed.
That's pretty cool that the two true loves in Lex's life are Brad and Metallica
love the contrast in personalities here. I was rockn out to it
This is their commercial sound, all polished, packaged and sold.
The hardcore Metallica fans might not agree but this is my favorite song by them. It has a lot more going on than most of their other stuff. This took a lot more talent to make imo.
What I like about this song is that is sounds so mellow and yet it is hard. Such a good balance
I will never forget seeing this song live. I will always defend Metallica as one of the biggest bands in history, they put me on the metal road and I haven't looked back
This song is fire
This albums lost a lot of fans, but also gained a lot of fans.
The video to this song is disturbingly amazing. Deep. One of my all-time favs.
In 1991 This album, Nirvana Nevermind, Peral Jam Ten, Guns N Roses Use Your Illusion 1&2, Red Hot Chili Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magic, and Soundgarden Badmotherfinger All Came out within 44 Days of each other. It was an awesome time for music. Also Pearl Jam Ten is essentially a perfect album... not a single bad song.
Not only it’s one of Metallica best songs, but it’s a “classic” one of the best metal/rock songs ever!!!!!
I want this played at my funeral...however, I forgive you all!
Lexi, очень чувствительная натура. она погружается в музыку целиком, чувствует её всей душой
My favorite metallica song. The older you get the harder it hits
"It's somewhere between Blackened and Nothing Else Matters". She knows Metallica better than I do.
Yeah, The Unforgiven is Track 4, Nothing else Matters Track 8 on Metallica. And Blackend of course on the previous album.
It sounds nothing like Blackened
Its a song about soldiers plain and simple..best of Metallica
The unforgiven 2!!!!! You’ll love it
You two make me happy. That declaration of love fueled my heart. Respect.
It took some time for me to adjust to the songs on this album. I was used to their 'Master Of Puppets' sound since it was the first album I had owned. Still, the 'Black' album grew on me over time.
I've had that same experience with a lot of different artists too, when their following album sounds completely different to their usual sound. SOAD, Slipknot, The Prodigy etc. I've disliked albums upon release but grown to love and appreciate them over time once my own musical tastes have changed.
I prefer Pasta Of Muppets
@@NoRUclipsName1 - LOL!
@@peterwale6821 - It was after the 'Black' album that I struggled with being "tolerant" of Metallica's follow up efforts. While there might be songs I was able to enjoy, overall, I lost complete interest and just continued listening and purchasing albums from other bands that I liked. The very last album I purchased from Metallica was 'Hardwired'. At least the title track from the album is decent. I have yet to sit through the rest of it. With Slipknot, it wasn't that I didn't dig what they released, they just weren't releasing "Slipknot" albums. They started having that "Stone Sour" sound to them, and I also dig that band. I just don't feel the two should mix.
the club , coconut bay, pensacola florida,,,they would play this as a slow dance song, hell , yes, awesome ballad,,
Lex, your comparisons and observations are so spot on. For someone so new to the great world of Metal, you've absorbed so much already and truly submerged yourself into it. It's a pleasure to watch. 🤘😎
The fresh faced teenie bopper and her low key sidekick really get to the bottom of generes outside their comfort zone.
Nice to see MetaLex back in action, riding the couch lightning during the solo. ✌️
You HAVE TO SEE the real video. Very powerful imagery that perfectly coincides with the song.
it is about not wasting your life
Their new producer at the time Bob Rock showed them how to condense their songs to a shorter time and still get their message through. This in order to get radio play.
This song is the story of my life...some deep shit and the chorus lyrics describe things for me to a "t".
theres just something so magical about this song. the guitar harmonies at the end just hit the spot
