      Derek N ehh somewhat not really. People dislike this song because it has a music video, which at the time of you made a music video to a song, it was considered selling out and being “poppish”. The song itself is far from a pop song and the album it’s on AJFA is I think their fastest thrash album. It’s mainly the music video and it really blowing them up that gets hate. Doesn’t take away from the actual song

I don't believe they changed to the dark side with Justice, but definitely with the black album and beyond. Historically And Justice was a really dark album, one that they recorded over the loss of their Bassist Cliff Burton who had died while the band was touring a year and a half earlier. One is based on Johnny got his gun by Dalton Trumbo who both wrote the book in 1939 but also directed the film in 1971. Joe is the soldier, who was a son and was engaged to be married and the very last day of World War One is the victim of a mortar shell blast that blinds him, causes him deafness, removes his jaw and nose, and severely injures his arms and legs which have to be amputated. Unaware that Joe is conscious and can still think and feel, he is believed to be an unthinking, unfeeling vegetable. Recognizing that he wishes to be dead due to the extent of his injuries once he becomes conscious and is able to piece together exactly what has happened to him he desperately begins to try to find a way to communicate to the Nurses and Doctors. As a last-ditch effort, he decides to use morse code, using his head to tap out the messages. S.O.S. Help, Kill me. Which at first is misinterpreted as part of his condition slipping until they begin to notice its consistency. The story ends with Joe finally getting his wishes across to one of his nurses who tries to end his suffering but is stopped by a Military superior and ends ambiguously with whether he remains in his state or whether they finally end his misery.

    This song is about the 1939 Dalton Trumbo novel Johnny Got his Gun. The clips in the video are from the 1971 movie version. The black and white scenes are his present condition after stepping on the land mine, the scenes in color are him flashing back to his life before the accident. Both the novel and the movie have been banned and very difficult to get at various points in history due to the powerful anti-war message. Metallica bought the rights to the movie to use in this video. The original author Trumbo was one of the people blacklisted during the McCarthy communism witchhunts.

    Lars plays incredibly here, and I am talking about the first part, the fast part is of course great, but the first part the fresh and rhythm - pattern is amazing. He is one of most creative drummers evers. It does not matter if some hits were not on point it is about the creativity and he is one of best I have heard. I dont care about on point , that a computer can do.

      See all my close relatives all died off by my late 20's, I now in my early 40's and watching Ryan & George react to the One Video was as close to seeing kids opening presents on Christmas Day as I've gotten in a LONG time. It's just the reaction I was expecting ...priceless!
      I'm STILL watching this a few times a day, and a weird thing happens: I'd put on this video and it always seemed to get cold, then I realized it was chills running down my spine. It happened again just now!
      Thanks Ryan & George for reviewing this song AND with the video, awesome touch. I am digging this vid more than I probably should!
      BTW, you could also make my New Years if you reviewed 'Seasons In The Abyss' by Slayer {my life is rather pathetic, I know}

I understand the torture and finality of war first hand as I have known many buddies that have been devastated one way or another. For those that want to know. This song is based on the story line of a movie called Johnny Got His Gun. It's about WW1.. The movie is.. well. This video.. Only with more detail. Will make you hate war.
    In the movie, his face, arms, and legs are gone. Blind and deaf. Removed after a shell blast. They think he is brain dead, he's not. In the movie and as you see in the song you hear his thoughts. He can't tell what's real at first.. Goes through this journey and slips into madness. The part that stuck with me was that he could feel the sunlight when it shines through his window. It was just about the only joy he knew.

      No worries. It was set in world war 1. The book was written in 1938 the movie was made in 1971.
      Side note:
      "While it is well known that Jimmy Carter required all his new State cabinet members to view the film shortly after his election as Georgia governor in 1971, the film became far better known when it was incorporated in the video of Metallica's song "One", whose popularity subsequently turned Johnny Got His Gun into a cult film. Eventually, the members of Metallica bought the rights to the film in order to keep showing the music video without having to pay additional royalty fees."
