I normally find "reaction" videos annoying. But there's something endearing about watching these two guys get their faces melted in real time with their first Megadeth song. They picked a hell of a first one to listen to, for sure.
+Paul Scheidel There isn't even an ordinary song on the album. Every song brings something unique and different to the table and all of them all just balls out masterpieces. Song-writing unlike any other album from the metal mastermind himself.
The best part about Mustaine's vocals is that he wasn't even his first choice for vocals. He was his own last resort. And look how it worked. One of the most unique voices in the genre.
It's a shame he didn't look after his voice when touring like most musicians did because it couldn't last a show when I saw them back in 2001, in fact the vocals ruined it. I love his voice on the studio albums though, always have.
He was fantastic on Countdown To Extinction and Youthanasia when it comes to vocals, with Youthanasia being their only album where Dave is genuinely singing, not yelling, grunting, rapping or screaming the lyrics. After 1999 however it went downhill.
Guys, I've been listening to this song for what, 25 years? I think that other than the very first time I heard it myself, I never enjoyed it as much as I did listening to it with you today)))

I grew up listening to this song, but watching you guys discover it for the first time really breathed new life into it for me and actually deepened my appreciation for it.
danger5oh I just started watching their channel and yeah seeing how they appreciate the song made me break down in my own head really just how great it is.
This was Megadeath’s show opener for years, he now uses it in his encores. This was definitely his best work with true musicianship from all members and RIP drummer Nick Menza
I saw them on 9-2-22 in Houston it was awesome! Played it at the end as well with peace sells and we’ll be back during the middle 🙌❤️ it was the best time hope to see them again!
Indeed, one of the most underappreciated skills that Dave Mustaine possess. So what if his voice isn't as appealing or powerful as other metal singers but, he's extremely skilled.
And at a period in his life where he was doing so much heroin and coke he eventually almost lost his arm from it. Imagine what he could do sans those demons.
Dan Marshall, perhaps sans demons...sans inspiration. Hence the rampant use and damn near required use of heroine to be successful in the realms of extreme music
I've seen the documentary with Dave talking about, he fell asleep fucked up one night with his arm lent over the back of a chair and was leaning on it, he damaged his radial ulnar nerve and it meant he couldn't pull his hand upwards which ofcourse is vital for playing guitar. But with lots and lots of physical therapy he managed to regain use of the hand, but he had to kinda change how he played abit because it never truly came back. Similar thing happened to steve vai, he damaged nerves in his picking hand and hence he uses a kind of different technique for picking.
Those 2 bands were so influential to me in high school. 80s and 90s music was the most diverse and excepted. I am a fan from hip hop, classic rock, metal, grunge, rap rock collaboration. So much good music. Some faded but those time gave me respect for so many genres.
That's the way I feel. We ended up with two incredible metal bands. It would almost be a shame if Dave remained in Metallica, to think that we wouldn't have David Ellefson's insane bass parts, wouldn't have probably went in the direction of the Black Album, which hate it if you want, but I'll fight it tooth and nail. I just think that in this case for sure, it happened for a reason. Mustaine was meant to do his own thing and Lars and James were meant to do theirs.
Honestly, when I first heard this song, I kind of felt the same way. I mean, there are Maiden songs, Sabbath songs and many more I am sure I am forgetting where there is at least 1.5 minutes (or more) of just shredding instrumentals.....then the vocals kick in.....and you're like "Holy Shit"......I totally forgot!!!!
I think I've watched this video from beginning to end maybe 5 times. I think I appreciate the fact that you're giving your complete unbiased attention to the entire song.
Okay, I'm back here for like the 100th time. Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I just come here and watch you two react to Holy Wars. It always puts a smile on my face, because I remember having the exact same reaction the first time I heard a Megadeath song. I was like 17 years old, (I'm 53 now) and I very clearly remember thinking "This is a whole other level of badass."
This song coupled with a lot of opiates and a passion to play like Dave is what made me a megadeth fan. For years I didn't like them because Dave was a dick but once I really tried it I was hooked lol.
Dudes, this video was recommended to me by RUclips, so I clicked on it. I’m stuck recovering in a hospital so I’m obviously on a lot of RUclips. I’m a lifelong metal fan and I play in bands but as a musician I like the whole spectrum and find something in everything. It’s clear you guys are obviously musicians or producers or something so to see you react so honestly, but also break it down the way you did, was great. Watching you get to enjoy something for the first time was just so much fun to watch. I really loved watching your reaction to the musicianship of what many metal heads consider the “classic” and most talented lineup / time period of Megadeth. Thanks guys, this really made my day.
Yes, they’re right. This song is hard to play, takes an advanced skill set to whip this out. I can’t even fathom how Dave plays this fast and sings the melody at the same time, holy shit, hats off to him.
yo I'm a bit late, if you're still wondering, the reason he can sing and play these rhythms at the same times Is because the rhythm pattern that you play with your hands is the same rhythm pattern that you sing, and that's awesome because I also thought it was practically impossible to play and sing at the same time. I learned In a few months, this song gives you the illusion that it's hard but only if you didn't lock in your rhythm with practice...
YES! Thank you! Intercessory prayer is the best thing in this world. Even if you don't believe Christian, the earnest prayers of an honest person will AVAIL MUCH!
I love how music can bring us together. These guys who aren't really fans of the genre can connect with metal heads - I hope metal heads show the same appreciation for true musical talent in other genres themselves.
Agreed. That would be awesome. But let's face it, many metal heads don't even like that much metal. They like the bands they like, and every other metal band are poseurs or sellouts, not trve, real metal. So, I doubt that the people I'm referring to will give much credence to other genres, when they can't even be bothered to appreciate the different facets of the music they claim to love so much. I, however, could be wrong. Just my 2 cents. Cheers!
I consider myself open minded. My comfort zone is thrash, metal and grunge. However, I can appreciate and I also like and listen to some hip hop, blues, pop, rock, etc. I don't care the genre, If I like it I like it, If I like it too much, I give it a shot to the band. It IS that simple though Most metalheads however tend to be really close minded and some of them even throw shit to other bands and genres, it's really sad
Hi guys, just stumbled across your vids and saw this one and was blown away by your honesty. What you guys felt hearing this for the first time was what I felt way back in 1990. It was inspiring and I suddenly felt justified for loving this band and this song so much. It was like 27 years of emotion had been bottled up and came rushing out all at once based in your reactions. I'm not ashamed to say, it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you. Thank you. You made this old metal heads day, week, month and year. Sub'd and recommended to all my friends and family. I look forward to watching more. Take care guys. Much love.
Agreed. The points they were making were the exact things that went through my 14 year old mind the first time I heard this song. It truly is a legendary song and it's so relatable to see someone's honest initial reactions like this.
Listen, I've discovered metal because of these guys! it is definitely an art! I can't just sit down when i hear that song (which ive hear at least 17000 times.)
MikeMetalBelgium. It is so nice to see their reactions the amazement the admiration the recognition of this unearthly talent. Having heard this song hundreds of times you tend to take it for granted. This resets your experience of this masterpiece. Love it 🔥🔥💯👍
I love coming back to this video every now and again. Reminds me that Holy Wars is quite possibly the crowning thrash achievment, the high water mark, the mona lisa. So singular in it's greatness that it holds the distinction of being the song that woke you dudes on real metal and thus gave me my favorite youtube channel of all time. So grateful you guys discovered this and even more grateful you discovered it in front of an audience that needed to see you find it. You guys are doing awesome work. Never stop. Freethinker forever.
Holy Wars is still one of the greatest songs ever. I remember seeing the video on MTV'S Headbanger's Ball back in 1990 when it first came out at 12 years old. It blew me away too and this song still holds up today and it always probably will. Dave Mustaine is one of the greatest songwriters in the music industry ever. It is very incredible for him to be playing guitar and sing the songs he has written. Dave Mustaine deserves the respect he gets at his skill.
Best Holy Wars reaction vid ever! I am jealous watching people experience this song for the first time. I heard it for the first time in 1991 when I was in 7th grade and it totally blew my mind just like these guys... Megadeth truly set a standard for thrash metal and that song IMO still holds up as one of the greatest ever. Awesome vid!
After hearing this song hundreds, maybe thousands, of times, it's pretty cool watching people hear this for the first time. It reminds me of when I heard it for the first time, and how mind-blowing it really is. One of the songs that really got me into metal as a teenager.
By far one of the greatest song ever created, Megadeth will always be in my heart, in terms of technical level megadeth is a superior ONE, that combination Mustaine and Friedman is simply the best I've ever seen and those drums Nick Menza I love that dude I miss him so much.
Best Megadeth line-up ever, Marty Friedman is so great but Nick Menza is the backbone of the best alchemy in all metal history ever., I miss him him so much the same way I miss Chuck Shuldinger. Such an album!
yeah I'm all hip hop in every way and never liked or listened to this kind of music, but i never heard anything like this! first time i ever listened to an entire metal song and i like it , you just turned me into a fuckin metal head!
watched black Sabbath, i remember my uncle's playing they're songs, lots of respect for them I'm convinced that metal is great music and will look into your suggestions thanks...
k jerome no doubt bro im on the flipside, metal head all the way but when i heard "Warning" by biggie i was blown away , the drum beat , the bass line , those damn lyrics and of course biggies flow. Doesnt matter what it is , if something is great its great.
"I would love to see this live" I have seen this band about 10 times in concert. The song is identical to the recorded version. Anyone who thinks they use audio tricks to record this will be proven wrong when they see this live and every note is played on cue! Great video. Thank you guys for posting!
the thing i love about this show (you guys are killing it btw) is your reaction takes me back to when i heard this stuff for the 1st time. of corse i know Holy War is a master piece but somewhere along the years i forgot. thanks for bring me back to when it was all new to me as well. FIRE!!
Joseph 221b very cool man. I'm a bit too young to have met them then (29 now) but wish I could have seen them in that time in their prime. Lucky to have met a legend! Great drummer. This album is my favourite. This or countdown to extinction I think. I like them all though
So cool watch you guys listen to the song for the first time, and knowing sick parts are coming up. Then seeing your reaction to said sick parts. Awesome video!
And as far as I'm concerned, the best that Metallica ever was, was when Dave was in the band. After Master of Puppets, I think they got progressively worse.
52 here. Thinking about all of the eras and sub genres we have lived through, it is difficult to argue with that. Dave never went mainstream like Metallica did. A little commercial maybe, but not like they did.
@@ROZWAY_II Yep, a single full album which failed. Compare that to Metallica who went completely mainstream ten years earlier and never fully went back.
I am too a old school hip hop fan as well a hard rock metal guy. but seeing new people experiencing new forms of music and getting injoyment out of it. does my Hart good. you guys rock.
They tend to play this song as the finale in concerts these days, but there was a time, long ago, where they would open the set with this. It'd go straight from the intro missile sirens to that riff. It was glorious, as though the stars were aligning 😭
It's great seeing people that can respect and appreciate other genres musically without necessarily being fans of that genre. Its fine to not like certain types of music. If you say you are into music you should be able to at least appreciate some of the talent that goes into other genres.
To answer your question: These guys would play for 2 hours plus like this every concert and not miss a beat. It was like watching a force of nature. Good times. ;)
Compared to when I was a teenager 15 years ago, I'm seeing a LOT more African-Americans at metal concerts, wearing Metallica/Megadeth/ACDC shirts....and I'm also seeing A LOT more Caucasians appreciating rap and old school hip hop. It genuinely makes me feel happy on the inside to see that people are coming together, loving each other, and appreciating art together. Thanks for posting this guys, really enjoyed it. Subscribed :)
Nice, I was going to say I would love to see more black people in rock bands, a great opening band I saw for megadeth called Lillake had an awesome drummer who was black.
I'm a guitarist with 30+ years under my belt. This is an incredibly advanced song, and it is VERY difficult. I'm glad to see you guys having such big reactions from one of the greatest metal songs by my favorite artist.
Anyone who tells you this stuff, is 'easy' has never picked up an instrument. Believe none of it. Even an accomplished player would never make such an ignorant comment. I've been playing guitar since the age of 9. I'll be 60 in a few weeks. To play a piece perfectly is not 'easy'..........even when it may sound easy.
@@ballbustinbravo, Those aren't triplets. Those are reverse gallops. They alternate between 8th and 16th notes. You'll see if you take a look at a notation.
Exactly, as a guitar players myself I constantly tell people Dave is one of the top 5 goats because the riffs he plays while singing are incredible and he does it note for note live, and it looks like without effort at all yet trying to learn his riffs alone during his rhythms is so difficult
@@cuginoeddie8677 Yeah, but he "sings" like total shit though lol. He doesn't sing at all he sort of just croaks out the lyrics live especially. Hetfield is a WAY better example of who does it best, especially back in the day when he was younger and could do more with his voice and the heavy texture.
@@djjazzyjeff1232 his voice has nothing to do with it. If you played guitar and even attempted his riffs and factored in how he can possibly sing while playing them you’d understand. I love Hetfield but while he’s singing he’s only downpicking during 90% of his verses while singing.
Megadeth used to open with this song when it was first released, but now they use it for an encore at the end of the show. Glad to see such respect for them.
Outsiders listening to something we've always taken for granted will always pick up things we haven't. That's awesome. Love a fresh take on a treasured song.
I played bass in speed metal bands in my late teens/early 20's; I first picked up the guitar at twelve. I can STILL remember the cold chills I got the first time I listened to this cassette.. I promptly ordered the tab book, locked myself in my room an entire wk and learned the album.. My parents weren't big fans lol but the pride I felt jamming with musicians years older than me to this amazing music was indescribable!

Hell yeah bro
dude sameeee. i hate reaction vids but these dudes really are honest and enjoyable.

Absolutely agree
Holy wars is a masterpiece
Lance Burnworth there’s isn’t a weak song on the entire album

Only those who do not see it as a full album experience will nit-pick Dawn Patrol, though. Feel sorry for their lack of brain cells.

There isn't even an ordinary song on the album. Every song brings something unique and different to the table and all of them all just balls out masterpieces. Song-writing unlike any other album from the metal mastermind himself.
Absolutely!!! One of the greatest songs ever !!

Mustaine can never be overpraised. This whole album makes me wonder what else he could have conjured while sober
Mustaines lyrics are super relevant today. It’s chilling
I've noticed that too Pink Floyd as well
100% agree this album has kept me together during this covid insanity. Love this album!!!

After 1999 however it went downhill.
i introduced my friend to megadeth and he goes, 'oh my god, that's such an evil voice!' haha
@Dz ntz haha yeah that’s wht my friend said. He ended up listening to all of their albums and he now loves megadeth! 😂

Megadeth*
Saw Megadeth on 5-7-22, Holy Wars was the encore after a one hour show, note for note from the album, like GOD intended lol, incredible.
I saw them on 9-2-22 in Houston it was awesome! Played it at the end as well with peace sells and we’ll be back during the middle 🙌❤️ it was the best time hope to see them again!
Saw them 9-6-22 and they played this song note for note I can’t even imagine how hard it is to do this night after night
I've seen them five or so times, Holy Wars was the closing song for all of them
P.S. The singer is playing guitar as well. Think about that one.
I think they know cos they're probably watching the music video where dave sings and plays guitar
Getting screwd by Metallica was the best thing ever happened to Dave and the music world cause it brought us Megadeth , ty Metallica
Those 2 bands were so influential to me in high school. 80s and 90s music was the most diverse and excepted. I am a fan from hip hop, classic rock, metal, grunge, rap rock collaboration. So much good music. Some faded but those time gave me respect for so many genres.
Megadeth v. Metallica = Ford v. Chevy. Both have produced some undeniable classics.
Dave screwed himself m8...

Whoa! Coolest gal in the world?
Are you Randy Rhodes daughter? Hahaha
@Samantha Rhodes: Oh, far more than just bang. I tend to get quite creative.
This is so cool to see people react to this for the first time. This is the song that made me a fan of Megadeth.
Mine was Peace Sells
Watched a mid 20’s white girl listen to this for the first time I believe she was impregnated

This is by far my new favorite you tube channel by far ...you guys are awesome
Me too lol
You two guys are what's right in this world , thank you , open minded gentleman
2019.. still coming here. Have a quick recovery Dave... Stay strong!

....still in the intro. Lol. Love it!
I love how music can bring us together. These guys who aren't really fans of the genre can connect with metal heads - I hope metal heads show the same appreciation for true musical talent in other genres themselves.
Fr
It IS that simple though
Most metalheads however tend to be really close minded and some of them even throw shit to other bands and genres, it's really sad
Much love.

@@okenshield no But he plays and Sings live tho
