1984. That's the year this song came out, with their second album, "Ride The Lightning". The singer James Hetfield wrote this when the band's equipment was stolen one day and among the stolen goods was an amplifier that belonged to him. It was a very special one, because his mother gave it to him as a last present before she died of cancer. He got so sad and depressed that he wrote this song.

"I wrote the song at a friend's house in New Jersey. I was pretty depressed at the time because our gear had just been stolen, and we had been thrown out of our manager's house for breaking shit and drinking his liquor cabinet dry. It's a suicide song, and we got a lot of flak for it, as if kids were killing themselves because of the song. But we also got hundreds of letters from kids telling us how they related to the song and that it made them feel better."

1984 dude, back in my teenage years when nobody else but metalheads knew who Metallica was, when all us metalheads felt like we were in on some awesome secret that the rest of the world wasn't hip to, "And justice for all" and the song "One" brought Metallica into the mainstream and a lot of fans felt betrayed that Metallica sold out to the corporate world, myself I felt like the world had finally caught up with Metallica and the musical tastes of people began in the 90s to become less of a group mentality, less putting music into neat little boxes of genres, I personally thank Run DMC and Aerosmith for their huge step in the 80s that broke the glass ceiling

This music is iconic not just because of the raw sound but because of the storyline imprinted in the song. The balance between melodic and metal is one of the most brilliant i have ever heard. I can't imagine what it is being depressed at the point of suicide, but this music was able to show me the rollercoster that people can achieve when they get to this point in life. The hole time we can SEE and FEEL the struggle and the end is the culmination of an end long desired.
Knowing the background of the music, why was it made or how James was feeling at that time just brings even more feels and emotions.
Great song from one of the best albuns ever made. 'Tallica Rulez!!

This is, hands down, one of my absolute favorite songs from them. This got me through so many dark times in my teenage years. If I was feeling like I wanted to hurt myself, this song went on, I’d pick up my guitar and just go. By the time it was over, I’d be ok. This song has so much emotion and meaning to me wrapped up into it than it just being “some song”.
It was made in 1984 and Metallica back then didn’t have access to the best of the best. This was only their second album and it would be another few years before they hit the big time. The reason it’s so polished and clean sounding is mainly because Lars and James are, or at least were back then, absolute perfectionists. Everything had to be perfect and done exactly right and sounding amazing or they did it over. This was True from the playing, to the recording to the mixing and mastering.
BTW, when this album was written and recorded, James and Lars were around 20. Let that sink in....they were 20 years old and writing and performing at that level. It’s mind boggling...
Thank you so much for doing this song, it’s saved my life on multiple occasions....

Their star was rising, sure, but they were far from a household name at that point in their career. Iron Maiden, for example, were much, MUCH bigger stars worldwide at that time.

The song was written by James about the time his mother died when he was like 15. She gave him a gutair and years later it was stolen . So the song is about that pain he was experiencing. I used to play this on drums . My Favorite.

Ryan and George if you hear this, PLEASE DO "ORION"!!!!! (Master of Puppets album). Cliff Burton blows your mind with his skill in this song! A phenomenal instrumental that 100% stands out as a "greatest hits" candidate for Metallica. One of their best pieces. Love tuning into to your new videos and hearing your unbiased opinion, and I would love to hear you tackle this killer masterpiece! Thanks again!

I've noticed the bass players don't get alot of love in their more metal reactions. I get the guitar is more noticeable then the bass but I've watched Cliff and Geezer get not mentioned once even when their going off.

That transition from the main one to the finale of this song is phenomenal. Especially the guitar solo at the end which sounded like "flight", assuming the person in the song finally commited suicide and is free from all his woes, all his pain and misery in life and travels to after-life. As the song's title "Fade to Black" indicates like his soul has finally travelled to infinity and beyond, into nothingness, like we all do in the end...away from the world that hurt him. Sorry if that was too long but the first time I heard this was way back in my younger years. The song was heartfelt for me and struck me really hard back then. Anyways, keep 'em coming guys. Nice vid

Gotta disagree yo. Don't get me wrong, it's an incredible live version, but it would be these guys' first intro proper thrash Metallica. The studio version is nuts, but the groove and feel is still perceptible through the wall of noise, better for analysis and reaction

Definitely. Orion is their ultimate instrumental, and really showcases Cliff's abilities both on the bass and on the sheet. Burton's bass solo is amazing.

It's probably already been said in comments but I'm not scrolling through almost 3000 comments.......... James wrote this song about how he felt after all of there equipment was stolen on tour i think with Van Halen Just as they were starting to get a name for themselves, I think 1983?. Anyways Eddie Van Halen heard what happened and sent them all brand new equipment................How cool is that???

Best Metallica song ever in my opinion (and they have many great songs to choose from). This was on Ride the Lightning from 1984 which was my first exposure to them. So much depth to this song, both musically and lyrically.
