I saw Metallica in 1997 in Memphis. Met the band. I was on the barricade, not 6 feet from the stage. The lead singer, James Hetfield jumped down and handed me the pick he played "Nothing Else Matters" with....right after the solo and just at the crescendo to the song. That was over 20 years ago and I still remember that just like it happened yesterday. Long time Metallica fan here. "Fade to Black" is one of my favorites.

Metallica is still awesome live to this day. They had a rough patch from the late 90's to mid 2000's but they sound good again. Not the same energy as 30 years ago but they are in their 50's now. They sounded awesome in 2008. Their concerts in the 80's and early 90's are absolutely legendary. Unarguably one of the best live acts ever. They had an energy and connection to the crowd like no other band. You must check out the Live Shit Binge and Purge box set shows. Seattle 89 and San Diego 92 are amazing. Especially Seattle. One of the best concerts put to tape. Blackened, Creeping Death, Battery, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Sanitarium, The Four Horseman, ...And Justice For All, Whiplash. It is all great.

This is true cultural appropriation. Someone on the outside of a culture can respect and enjoy something from another culture. This is the only way to MAYBE understand a person or where they are coming from. Or at least it's on the right track

      Jack
One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I only went because the wife loves them and some of my favorite bands wouldn’t exist without them. Never been more entertained by a show.
I had more personal memories like when I saw Vio-lence at a 3,000 person venue where it was just my band and their roadies there, nobody else. I’ve still never seen a performance like Maiden though.

Well. Im 46. I was 15 in 89'. Trust me. Seeing them as a teen at Starwood in Nashville TN, when the music was shaping me, is totally different than hearing them in 2015 or something. As teens were impressionable. And they had an impression on me as an aspiring guitarist. Just stood in awe. Same with GnR, Pearl Jam, etc.

It will always hold a special place in my heart and to this day Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and The Black Album still hold the highest ratio of fully body chills : songs of any artist I've ever heard. So inspiring and emotionally resonant. They describe in music what can never truly be put in words.

I‘ve learned this song like 8 years ago. And up to this day there is pretty much no session where i don’t play the ending solo at least as a warm up.
Imo this song is just pure perfection, imagine writing something like this, oh man, every note is just where it belongs and should never ever be something else, thats what i dont like about the live performance of this song, kirk always butchers the ending solo into something else but hey after so many years playing it almost every week or so live, well you have to mix it up a bit.
But fade to black is so much fun to play even after 8 years.

James Hetfield - vocals and rhythm guitar
Kirk Hammett - lead guitar (he does the solos)
    Lars Ulrich - drums
    Cliff Burton - bass
Cliff was on the first 3 Metallica albums, but then he died in a car accident in 1986 while the band was on tour in Europe. Metallica replaced Cliff with Jason Newsted in 1986. Jason was on the 4th-7th albums. Jason left the band in 2001. Metallica replaced Jason with Rob Trujillo in 2003, and has been with the band ever since, being part of their last 2 albums.
I saw Metallica for my first time ever in July 2017 at the Rose Bowl. It was the best concert I’ve ever been to. Metallica’s own channel has a large amount of videos from their current worldwide tour. I highly recommend checking out Spit Out the Bone - live London 2017. It is absolutely sick.
If you want to see Metallica performing at their absolute best, their absolute peak.....then you have to react to either Blackened or Battery live Seattle 1989. The Seattle 1989 show is well regarded as being their finest live performance ever.
Keep dishing out Metallica reactions. It’s just as fun for us metal veterans to watch as it is for you to first discover it.

Fade To Black is one of my favorites. It actually has seven different guitar pieces in the composition. I don't usually go into my interpretation of what the song means because I don't want it to influence what it might mean to others, but I think you got it. It's not about death, it's about facing life. Once you face your fears, even death, there is nothing else in this world that can control you.

I've been 3 times. They go balls out for 21/2 hours. It's the most exciting experience. They sound just like this live.

I saw them in San Francisco in 1988 Monsters of Rock tour. Van Halen was headlining their new album. Scorpions, Metallica (Who was finishing up their Master of Puppets tour) Dokken, and a New band Kingdom Come were there. Scorpions and Metallica stole the show.

Saw Metallica 4 times and you'd fit right in!
I still have my Justice (88') concert shirt, never washed, and the blood on it is brown now.
"One" was the finale. 10 rows from the stage. When the later solo started, chairs started flying..
Despite the pint of blood lost, Justice was one of the best friggin concerts ever!

Found your channel today. Am glad ya like the music so far. Don't get me wrong.. there are plenty of bands/songs that will be suggested to you that you most likely will not enjoy at all. It's cool either way b/c not all bands will appeal to everyone. Metallica, imo, is one of those few bands that are a good gateway to Metal. The band 'Black Sabbath' are also a good gateway into Metal. Both bands are very talented musicians and songwriters with plenty of solid material that are liked across many genres.
That being said.. you might want to check out the song 'Heaven and Hell' by the band 'Black Sabbath'. It was before Metallica came to exist so will sound a bit older.. but the vocalist 'Ronnie James Dio' was a major influence on Metallica. In fact, Metallica did a 3-song medley tribute to Ronnie James Dio when he died back around 2010. The medley included songs from before 'Heaven and Hell' when Dio was with the band 'Rainbow' (which is also another band to check out.. specifically the song 'Stargazer')
In either case.. keep on checking out the music and do not be afraid to say if you do not like something.. just explain what ya didn't like and then we can adjust our suggestions to more closely match what you will most likely enjoy ;)
    Peace

UOAbigail LeVey, I definitely agree! Ronnie James Dio brought Black Sabbath to a whole new level. In my opinion Ronnie was/is the best metal vocalist that ever lived! He is greatly missed!!

Honestly dude, in my opinion, music is art. And as such, the artist's interpretation and the viewer's interpretation may be different, but that's ok. As long as it's speaking to him then it doesn't matter if his meaning and the artist's meaning are the same.

Uh so they wrote songs with how they were feeling or going through or whatever at the time . Folk relate to it. We feel it and move on and don't dwell...

Kirk Hammett - Lead Guitar Kirk is a very accomplished player with many classic and respected solos though he is criticized quite often for over use of wah wah. An effect produced by stepping on a 'wah pedal'. Also, he lacks some songwriting ability as he is not credited on much of their catalog, though he has written parts to some of the bands most recognizable songs. Some say he is overrated and some adore him. He is though, still a very well respected guitarist for contributing to Metallica's unique sound in a big way and for his timeless, classic guitar solos. A big influence on me and many others who picked up a guitar in the 80's and 90's and even present day.
James Hetfield - Rhythm Guitar/Vocals James is one of two remaining founding members of the band along with drummer Lars Ulrich. These two have been the main driving force of the Metallica machine for most of their existence. Together James and Lars wrote and recorded the song Hit The Lights which basically gave birth to a new genre called Thrash Metal that combined the raw sound and speed of punk music with British heavy metal. After not wanting to sing James became comfortable in the role and has become a very well respected front man. His voice is unmistakable and one of the best in metal. His rhythm guitar playing is almost legendary. He has an excellent down picking technique that was rarely if ever seen in rock/metal up to that point. His down picking would sound as though he was using a tremolo or speed picking technique which is up and down and easier to do creating a bit different sound. He has been one of or the main riff writer in the band the entirety of their existence and has obviously created some amazing music over all these years. LONG LIVE METALLICA! LONG LIVE METAL! METAL UP YOUR ASS AND ROCK ON!
