I actually listened to it fully for the first time a couple months ago. It was a reaction video I had playing but wasn't really payin much attention to...but i found myself consumed by it and nearly dizzy by the end. I actually thought it was newer. I dont know much of their newer music(after 2000 or so). Ive never enjoyed an instrumental in my life...won't 4get it...

Metallica bass player Cliff Burton died on September 27, 1986 when the band's tour bus went off the road, the album was released March 3, 1986. Burton had cited "Orion" as one of his favorite Metallica songs. He had a big part in writing the song (along with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich), and his performance on the track is regarded as one of the best of his career. The song was played at his funeral on October 7th, 1986. The album Master of Puppets was their 3rd studio album. The part here you got the feels was actually when Cliffs bass solo started. He was such a talent on bass and in his writing that it is hard to imagine what he could have given the music world. He was only 24 yrs old when he died, so the song that you just reacted to was performed by a bunch of guys in their early 20's. Hard to believe that at 24 were on their 3rd studio album, its no wonder why Metallica is still performing today.
The Gods of Mt. Metal needed a bass player. He was too beautiful for this world. This is also the reason Rhoads died (also in an accident involving a tour bus- that's the "tell" that the Gods of Mt. Metal were behind it).
I find myself watching your face go from intense concentration to sheer joy as you discover each of our favs for the first time. :) This is where you will taste a little Cliff Burton for real.

This song and call of ktulu are songs that make you feel like you just watched a great movie. You can almost see it playing out in your head. The emotions that Metallica makes you feel is just great.

SING ALONG WITH AN INSTRUMENTAL. like WTF?!?! simply magical. Love this song- i use it as my intro to my stream when i go online.
I actually like how this song ends. Instead of the 1000mph to dead stop intensity, it gently slows you down and sets you back on earth, almost like the song is like “you’ve been thru a lot during this album, so I’ll be nice this one time.”
If you love instrumentals, Metallica's "To live is to die " is the answer! It's a tribute from Metallica to Cliff Burton, and it's the last music that Cliff co-wroted before his death.
Been listening to Metallica for almost 25 years and this song still makes me think deep thoughts every, single, time. And that part between 10:28 and 10:48, all bass guitar brother
Thank you. Watching your reactions to these old metal songs has helped me rediscover what was so good about them. They are truly Master's of their craft.
Cliff Burton was a musical genius and that was his baby. RIP to the best bass guitarist in history, even the second guitar solo is him on bass, you can hear the difference.
You are right, Metallica are the gods of Metal. "Fade to Black" is one of their best, overall songs (best in my opinion). Give Bad Brains a listen (album-"Banned in D.C." ). BB are an all Black, Hardcore Punk/Reggae group from D.C. (80's era). They combined musical genres early on and we're one of the best HC groups.
I'm a little surprised most of you are saying 'To Live Is To Die" is your favorite Metallica instrumental. I've always thought Orion was the best of the best. I even really love Call of Ktulu, mainly for the exceptional solo, though.
I had this song playing in the background as our wedding party was being introduced at my wedding. I found out how cool some of our guests were that night as they made sure to tell me how awesome and unexpected that was. That was my favorite part of the wedding reception.

Rent the movie Metallica: Through the Never. You won't be disappointed - the last song they play, sitting in an empty venue, is Orion.

Your heart dropped and you got goosebumps because Cliff Burton's cosmic piece of creativity just began and like any mortal you didn't know how to handle it.

I binge watched you all Yesterday. Love what ya have going here. I want to hear more colorful metaphors about how the songs make you feel. Very happy to see your face with an indescribable confounding look. This is good times for us all. God bless you Brother.

Just so you know, the very first solo you hear in the song is played on the bass by Cliff Burton along with a few others on this song. One of my influences that made me want to play the bass guitar. RIP Cliff, we miss you.
