Great reaction to probably my favorite Metallica instrumental. It's quite epic in nature. Also, the other one you want to do in called "To Live is to Die". And you're getting a sub. :)
Exactly. This song is the culmination of Dave Mustaine, Cliff and James putting together a masterpiece. Just image what they would have written if they all stayed together and Cliff had lived.
Dave .Garrett very true... they would have been even bigger... if that is possible. Problem is that maybe all the spectacular Megadeth stuff would never have come out in Matallica.... or maybe it would have.
Yup Cliff used distortion & a wah wah pedal along with his Rickenbacker bass to make that accent. It's the same model bass that Geddy Lee of Rush favored & is equipped with a switch called "rickosound" (I think it was a certain phase variance)which gave it a "thick" tone.

The name of the song comes from a short story by H. P. Lovecraft "The Call of Cthulhu". Cthulhu is a cosmic being from the story. They had to change the name to Ktulu for copyright laws.
It's also established within the Cthulhu Mythos that there are many different spellings of the name used both by the cultists and those who were able to document their own investigations (rendering the name as whatever their mortal, mundane minds could comprehend of it). So, it's still legit as well.
What funny to me is someone completely new to Metal culture can already identify Ride the lightning is the best metallic album. And one of the most Iconic legendary albums in metal history. You sir have a fantastic taste for metal. Welcome to the Family. I love all music and grew up on Hip hop and rap. But Metal SLOWLY became my favorite because when you find the good metal it's just way to real.
My guy please check out No Leaf Clover from Metallica’s S&M album. They performed with a full symphony. It’s INCREDIBLE. Being such a huge Metallica fan this is a must
It's Cthulhu, James intentionally spelled it wrong to get the proper pronunciation across to casuals. He became a huge fan of Lovecraftian lore after being introduced to it by the late, great, Cliff Burton. On a side note, this song ispired me to start playing guitar, and it was the first song I attempted to learn......that was a mistake. Much, literal, blood, sweat, and tears were born from that labour. Totally worth it.
Much respect to you for reacting to this song. Not many will react to instrumentals and I love the fact that you have done many. This song is close to the heart and special for Metallica fans because it was the last song on Ride the Lightening and the last song we had with the original Bassists, Cliff Burton, before his death in 1986. It's almost a tribute to Burton and his talent. Thank you for highlighting it.
You need to react to The Call of Ktulu live from S&M album, where MetallicA plays with the San Francisco symphony orchestra led by the late Michael Kamen. It's totally a different experience, but not less epic. That one won a Grammy award. I promise you it won't be like reacting to the same song twice.
Karl Hungus well I don't know if I'd say it's "better than the original" but I'd definitely say it's a must hear, and that it has a whole different feeling to it, the orchestra dials the scary monstrous vibe up a notch and adds an epic dimension to an already epic song!
Bro!! I love watching you reactions to Metallica. They are my all time favorite band. So I made you this playlist: 1. To Live Is To Die 2. Blackend 3. Shortest Straw 4. Ride The Lightning 5. Creeping Death 6. Disposable Hero's 7. Battery 8. Damage Inc. 9. Mama Said 10. Turn The Page. To be honest you really need to just listen to the whole albums to get the whole "experience". Then when you are done with all that check out; 1. Paul Gilbert, Technical Difficulties 2. Pearl Jam, Yellow Ledbetter
That little distortion you say you like in the background is actually the late Cliff Burton on bass not the guitar. First time you hear it, it's like @ 1:34, 2:00 etc right? If so, yeah it's the bass. On that.... My friend of misery, Leper Messiah and To Live is To Die. Enjoy.
Yeah this is probably one of the only groups and it's because of Cliff Burton writing most of the music or he actually did all the music writing and that's why they changed up after and justice for all that was the last of Cliff Burton's work funny actually we're looking for a basis they went into a place and they asked who was the person with the four string guitar he was a master and this is probably the only group that the music was built around the bass a lot of people mistakes a lot of the rest and everything for guitar when it's really him on Bass and is so impressed it's just ridiculous I'm just the same all because if you would have just drew a higher card out of the deck he would've been inside that Punk that was crushed when when the trailer flipped
CoK is like a soundtrack to a movie. When I listen to this instrumental piece it's like watching an entire movie that takes you on a rollercoater ride of emotions.
So excited to see you react to 'to live is to die'...on the edge of my seat. I never actually heard this one til a couple dys ago...never owned the ride the lightning album. Had Puppets, Justice(my favorite), and the Black album...and wore those out.
King KTF...You know by now the background was actually the bass played by Cliff Burton..An absolute genius. To find out how big of a genius he was....do a reaction video to Anesthesia (pulling teeth)....on Metallica's first album Kill Em All......You will hear something you NEVER heard before
Ride the lightning is my favorite album too - one of the most perfect albums of all time - it has a consistent kind of theme, an intro, middle, and nice outro etc. Love your reactions man.
Bro,you nailed it on the fucking head...I love this about this song, finished like it started...I learned to play this song when I was 15....I'm 45 now..this and Orion off puppets, is why I got into music, there instrumentals are phenomenal!! Keep up the good work my man!
Yayyyy so glad you finally reacted to this and I knew you'd Love it. The little guitar riff that you mentioned you liked was our Beloved Cliff Burton Rockin his ass off on the Bass guitar like only he could. You will hear more of just how stellar he is on the next instrumental you listen to, which is Anesthesia. That is Cliff in all of his Glory. 2 Hold on Bruhs barely in the first minute, come on now. It's only fitting for such an Epic song. :)
He should also check out their movie, "Cliff 'em All", which was a behind the scenes look at that era of the Band before Cliff passed away. It was their BEST years!
I couldn't agree more Rick. I had it when if first came out on VHS and I was around 16 I think. Eh I'm dating myself but who cares, we had Bad Ass music growing up ;)
You got a new fan bro. Seen 75% of your videos now. Really cool to see u appreciate such a wide variety n watching someone hear these songs I discovered 25 years ago is like reliving them. Cheers bruuh!
New subscriber!! Damn man! As a lover of all music but metal being my primary genre, and being a ex lead guitarist of a metal band for years who've covered lots of Metallica, I gotta say that. I just LOVE YOUR REACTIONS🔴 Metallica is the first band I flipped out over and couldn't wait to get home and listen to and learn new songs and solos on my guitar to play. I listened to these songs so much that I didn't think I could get this excited and into them again until I found your channel. My best friend died 4 days ago suddenly at 34yrs old and him and I would sit in his basement many nights and have beers and joints and play guitar and listen to tunes and we both worshipped Metallica. We had a falling out 10 yrs ago and I haven't talked with him since. I always thought I'd get the chance to patch things up but I've learned the hard way. That time waits for no-one and I lost my chance. The last couple of nights I've come on to search for the songs we use to listen to and OMG MAN I swear that listening to it with you is like listening to it all over again with him. The way you stop and rewind and play parts over and just appreciate little details here and there is exactly what we use to do lol. So it don't bother me at all that you do that cause I dig it man. Your deep and you understand that just like with hip hop or rap, there's a story being told with every song. With instrumental's the story is customized with each person listening. Man I got goosebumps again listening to these songs with you that I can't wait to listen to alot more of them with you, and also to songs I've never heard with you as well because I know you'll catch something that I've missed or don't notice in a new song or even an old one. Thanks for doing this man! I would like to see a metal head reacting to hip hop songs or rap songs because music is music and if you're like me, you could find something good in any song. Even a bad one lol. Hell maybe I'll start reacting. I love onyx, ice cube, dmx songs I've heard etc... And I know I haven't heard the best of em. Anyways thanks again man I look forward to many msny more 🍻
This is the first of 3 or 4 songs dedicated to the 'Cthulhu' Mythos.. which were part of the books written by H.P. Lovecraft back in like he 1920's. 'The Call of Ktulu', 'The Thing That Should Not Be', and 'All Nightmare Long' for sure are the 3. I read, back in the late 80's, that Cliff Burton had introduced the group to a game similar to Dungeons and Dragons, called 'The Call of Cthulhu'. That is pretty much where they got the idea to do this, and the other songs eventually. Could not find a link to the actual article, but here's a good place to start: metallica.wikia.com/wiki/The_Thing_That_Should_Not_Be_(song) Peace
Liked the comment about listening to longer songs in today's world. The build up makes the solos that much better. It took time to build up into that. Metallica at their best here...
I love the way you doing reaction, hilarious moment when u paused music and said "now that's hot" and u even have not heard the hottest moment of the track yet
Oooooo.... another good one for you could be Creeping Death - Metallica. It is also on Ride the Lightning. I know that you like the change ups in the songs, and it has a really cool one. I would listen to the studio version, and then a Live version. Hetfield is pretty cool during the change up in a live concert.
YES YES YES!!!!! King KTF sir, you know how to bring it once again! Right now straight up, no joke, Metallica with S&M, this song and practically the whole album, there were a couple others I saw in the comments (which is it kind of shocking just to see a couple in all the comments I scrolled through) suggesting this same request and yes it will change your life! Also look into another life changing video of The Harvester of Sorrow in Moscow, and Battery in Seattle!
Man, I haven't watched the video yet and I can't describe how excited I am about it because this is one of my favorite Metallica songs which btw gets me real hyped. You make us feel like listening this songs for the first time and I thank you for that bro. So, without further a-say... Let's get to the song, bro!!
True, and those words are very important to me spiritually but everyone always refers to it as an instrumental so I get confused. I know it's not technically an instrumental but I think this guy will love it! I love watching him listen to these songs for the first time. He's into details and to live is to die has plenty of them and also depth and emotion.
Just speaking in general. I've called it an instrumental though I know technically it isn't. Everyone it soo hyper-sensitive. no wonder people are so mad all the time.LOL
Lee cater ..thanks man for being cool about it. Everyone I have ever known has called it an instrumental so I guess I know alot of idiots. lol. It's not really a big deal man it is technically not an instrumental!!! yeah, I get it!!!!! No need to get fired up about it you know?!?! I honestly think people, including myself need to get off of social media and RUclips more often and get out into nature and meditate, pray or just be. Just my thoughts. Get out of your cubicle and breathe in some fresh air. Most of us live in a box, no matter how nice that box is, and go to work into another box, then back home into our house/box and immediately get on our computer....another box, and forget how to communicate sensibly! When I was a kid we where always outside doing something and we communicated alot better. It seemed that we had more empathy towards people because we where face to face with another human being! If someone was misinformed or wrong about something we would laugh it off and simply inform them. But yeah, to live is to die is DEFINITELY NOT a instrumental! Ok?! lol.😁
The beginning guitar is the bassist Cliff Burton...he was amazing making that bass sound like a guitar... that's the distorted sound you hear R.I.P.... Cliff...🤘😎🤘... Check out his anesthesia bass solo video
Cliff Burton in my opinion was a musical genius, He was a major influence in the band. Just imagine what he would have brought to music if he was still alive, we lost a great one in 1986.
To Live Is To Die is the other instrumental you are referring to. It came out after Orion and most of it was originally written by Cliff Burton, who was their bass player in their first three albums and unfortunately died in a bus accident. Definitely check it out!

Keep in mind...these guys were in their 20s when they wrote this. Absolutely amazing musicians!
"Creeping Death" from the same album bruh...
Aquatic Highs and it sounds great even as a beginner piece
You have a good ear, most people would have overlooked that sound which is made with a distortion and wah pedal on a bass guitar.
Aaron 102 absolutely true
Hattem AlHajery he's right the S&M version is sooo good
Seconded!
Yes yes yes - I prefer it over the album.
Truth!
So I made you this playlist:
1. To Live Is To Die
2. Blackend
3. Shortest Straw
4. Ride The Lightning
5. Creeping Death
6. Disposable Hero's
7. Battery
8. Damage Inc.
9. Mama Said
10. Turn The Page.
To be honest you really need to just listen to the whole albums to get the whole "experience". Then when you are done with all that check out;
1. Paul Gilbert, Technical Difficulties
2. Pearl Jam, Yellow Ledbetter
speedguy26 great list. I think he would really like And Justice For All because of the intro alone
next one is " Pantera - This love "
YES
I binge watch this channel. So cool.
That little distortion you say you like in the background is actually the late Cliff Burton on bass not the guitar. First time you hear it, it's like @ 1:34, 2:00 etc right? If so, yeah it's the bass. On that.... My friend of misery, Leper Messiah and To Live is To Die. Enjoy.
leper messiah for sure!
Leper Messiah 🤘🤘
CoK is like a soundtrack to a movie. When I listen to this instrumental piece it's like watching an entire movie that takes you on a rollercoater ride of emotions.
Harvester of Sorrow is a killer Metallica song.
the live in Moscow version 👊
I appreciate the fact that you are appreciating music, that I hold dear to my heart
So excited to see you react to 'to live is to die'...on the edge of my seat. I never actually heard this one til a couple dys ago...never owned the ride the lightning album. Had Puppets, Justice(my favorite), and the Black album...and wore those out.
It's been a month now. Did you get the album?
King KTF...You know by now the background was actually the bass played by Cliff Burton..An absolute genius. To find out how big of a genius he was....do a reaction video to Anesthesia (pulling teeth)....on Metallica's first album Kill Em All......You will hear something you NEVER heard before
Fight fire with fire off of ride the lightning. It will blow your mind.
The very 1st Metallica song I ever heard and never looked back..
PLEASE... DO SHORTEST STRAW..BLACKENED..AND JUSTICE FOR ALL..EVERYTHING ON THAT ALBUM RIPS
Eh I'm dating myself but who cares, we had Bad Ass music growing up ;)
We sure did. It was the decade for Metal, and I'm glad to have been a part of it.
You got a new fan bro. Seen 75% of your videos now. Really cool to see u appreciate such a wide variety n watching someone hear these songs I discovered 25 years ago is like reliving them. Cheers bruuh!
If you haven't done these Metallica songs already, please do "To Live is to Die", "Blackened", and "Dyers Eve"....
You add so much to music I've enjoyed my whole life! Thank you 'bruh', for your enthusiasm and wonderful adoration.
Now watch it live with the San Francisco symphony it will blow your mind.
Anyways thanks again man I look forward to many msny more 🍻
love that you love metallica bro, LEVEL UP!!
“They took the time out to make it, I’m going to take the time out to listen”. Solid. Gold. ❤️
Officially my favorite reaction channel now.
SAME.
Great analysis Preston. It's scary to think what they would've done had they not lost Cliff.
Jonathan Gleich Cliff was talking about slowing their music down, maybe his death allowed AJFA to exist before the actual Black Album
Yeah, but Jason Newstead was no joke though either, he brought a lot of energy and life.
Could not find a link to the actual article, but here's a good place to start: metallica.wikia.com/wiki/The_Thing_That_Should_Not_Be_(song)
Peace
Dream no more also
That album was THE most increble blessing in disguise for me back in early 85 when I heard it, it made me buy it cuz I loved EVERY song on it
For Whom the Bell Tolls - Metallica ……… Has a long intro and it's on Ride the Lightning. Excellent song
namttip2 he did a reaction for that already. Check it out
Oh, I didn't realize. I thought that I had seen them all. I'll check it out.. Thanks
namttip2 your welcome buddy
Just put ride the lighting in your cd player and just press play in my opinion this is metallica's masterpiece
I agree!
Liked the comment about listening to longer songs in today's world. The build up makes the solos that much better. It took time to build up into that. Metallica at their best here...
s0ta21 The Unforgiven also has a great solo build up
Metallica battery, dyers eve, and damage inc
Jondon Roofner add Shortest Straw and Fight Fire With Fire
Yes to all the above!
The way they bring the crowd into it at a concert is awesome. Nothing like screaming DIE at the top of your lungs!! Lmao
I just love your videos man!
"To live is to die" is the next instrumental! My personal favorite! Great reaction bro!
True, and those words are very important to me spiritually but everyone always refers to it as an instrumental so I get confused. I know it's not technically an instrumental but I think this guy will love it! I love watching him listen to these songs for the first time. He's into details and to live is to die has plenty of them and also depth and emotion.
it's a 10 minute song with 15 secs of lyrics...most consider it an instrumental.
KennethPerkins1010 KingCort10 Actually Orion is the next one after Call Of Ktulu
One of the greatest, and most complete instrumental of all time... so many time we're left wanting more, not The Call.... the emotion is complete!!!
Cliff Burton in my opinion was a musical genius, He was a major influence in the band. Just imagine what he would have brought to music if he was still alive, we lost a great one in 1986.
It's a bass solo with added instruments.
Man call of ktulu is simply a masterpiece. I get goosebumps every single time I hear it.
Great music. Check out Metallica's "Suicide and Redemption".
I knew that it would be a flawless victory. Lol!
Here we go!!!!!!!! Another one I was looking forward to seeing
I love metal. I love seeing people discovering and loving metal for the first time too. These reaction videos are awesome.
Lightning has always been my fav Metallica album..every song kicks ass
It brings me such pleasure to see You enjoy Metallica like You do. Makes me go back 2 when i discovered them myself.
To Live Is To Die is the other instrumental you are referring to. It came out after Orion and most of it was originally written by Cliff Burton, who was their bass player in their first three albums and unfortunately died in a bus accident. Definitely check it out!
xXAscendingPhoenixXx Do you have a source about "most of it" was written by Cliff?
I know some parts were, but most of it?
only the spoken part was by burton on this one...
Love watching people react to the old school shit I've loved for 30 years like it's new
2 more instrumentals. 1)To live is to die 2) Suicide and Redemption.
G-Funk 1 Didnt he already do that one?
Suicide & Redemption is no where near as good as the older stuff. Do the older stuff first trust me bruh😉
G-Funk 1 then yeah he's definitely gotta do that one!
Suicide and Redemption is utter shit.
Love these Metallica vids. You’re absolutely right about old Metallica. It draws you in and draws you in and next thing you know your in the midst of magic. If you don’t feel their music in you and if doesn’t naturally bob your head than there’s something wrong with you. No matter your background, race or religion. Shit I grew up in Detroit and I don’t mean the suburbs and I love old Metallica. Anyway thanks for the great vids!!!!
That heavy wah and shredding in the background is Cliff Burton. Cliff is the reason why I picked up the bass
Glad you and I share a fav mang!
...since 88 mang!
You’d love the other instrumental called To Live is to Die. Also react to Harvester of Sorrow please!!
KTF Love that you reacted to this song! I love how it makes you feel the slow descent into madness. After seeing this one and the Tool reaction where you said they are your fav Im subscribing!
Like the Bass in the background? Yeah listen to Anesthesia - Pulling Teeth, from Kill em' All. Burton was the God of the Bass.
Oh dope you did react to this song! Glad I (and probably others) recommended it
Opening song to Metallica's awesome S&M concert. The symphonic orchestra really compliments this song well imo.
They have five instrumentals total..."Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)", "The Call of Ktulu", "Orion", "To Live Is To Die", and "Suicide and Redemption"
To live is to Die
Great stuff! Diggin on how hard this moves you! Appreciate you havin mad respect for the band’s efforts.
I was seventeen the summer of ‘86, when they toured this album, opening for Ozzy.
Mad energy from a young and ferocious Metallica!
Keep on with the great work, kind Sir!
~Oldhead🤘🏼
Listen to Trapped Under Ice from this album! 🔥
... me favorite Metallica song !
Yeeesss, Sir!
Well killen all the phantom lord
Dude your doing a great job! Keep up the good work, we appreciate you bro
To live is to die is an instrumental that amazing
I feel this intro in my soul every time. Every layer of it comes together so well and builds in exactly the way it needs to get that growing sense of foreboding. 👌
This is my favorite Metallica instrumental
Watching your reaction helps me re-live the first time I heard this song 20+ years ago
Another great Metallica song is "The Thing That Should Not Be"
Definitley love your respect for the music man. Your reactions are some of the best. Much love cuz.
