    This is probably my favorite song of all time, not just from Metallica, but from any band. I started listening to this as a metal head teen in the 80's, and it never made me contemplate suicide. It actually somehow encouraged me and gave me fight. I have felt like those lyrics describe, and it made me push through. The music is incredible. Kirk does a solo that I think is one of the best guitar solos I have ever heard. I love to see different live versions of this, because he adapts it, and keeps it fresh. Metallica is one of my favorite bands, and has been since I first heard it back in middle school. They captured all of their best in this song. Loved watching you react, it is a moving song, and you got rocked by it. God bless you!

Watching you react the same i did 30 plus years ago gave me goosebumps, girl! Enjoy your venture into the world of my generations music! There will never again be a time like that and its actually kinda sad. I have not heard a band of actual musicians since the 90s.

      Have you heard Greta Van Fleet yet? Many say they are a modern Led Zepplin. While some of their songs do sound like them, not all do. They are really good. Or at least I think so. It's nice to see young artists playing real instruments. My daughter and I saw them in concert, and they put on a great show, for a fairly young band.

      Trigger Happy ,I agree whole heartedly. It's been wo long since I've felt that elation that flowed over me in the 80s.
      Being 14 years old and finding the soundtrack genre of my life.
      People that have never listened to metal bc of a stereotype think your crazy when you cry during a song, but yet I believe that makes us more in touch with our feelings.

    Metallica has always gotten a bad rap....I've heard it all my life. If it wasnt for Metallica and the music.......I WOULD NOT BE HERE. My mom passed away in 87. I was devastated. What got me thru is the first 3 albums. I finally came to terms with the way I last spoke to my mom. We had an argument, cause of her drinking and I didnt want that in my life. I wanted to go to school. I just graduated. I told her to never come by drunk again.......and that was the last time I spoke to her. It just kept me pushing to live. Those songs healed me everytime I heard them.
    I lost my oldest boy on 6-24-18. I'm still missing him. Metallica is helping me thru this also. I told him I was going to take him to his first concert, Metallica ...but never happen.
    R.I.P. Mom and my Son.
    Love you always

      Yeah I was 26 when the Black Album was released. Though it was great to grow up in the era of young Metallica, a fairly younger Ozzy, etc. It was also the era of hair metal and later grunge which are kind of stains in music history. Especially hair metal. Some grunge was actually good, but like hair metal it became a fad that the record companies oversaturated the market with.

Your reaction was priceless. When you see people commenting about how this song saved them, believe it. I lived through all of that turmoil. It's amazing how big an effect a song can have on so many people. I'm happy to say I'm doing well these days, and love to reminisce about the 80s and 90s. I used to drive a 1969 Buick Gran Sport. I painted the Metallica logo on the hood and trunk, covering both. It was the Metallica-mobile, and I went to several concerts with it, including 5 Metallica concerts. That was just a priceless reaction :)
    One of the first metal ballads I ever heard back in the 80's. James Hetfield wrote the song in response to their gear getting stolen after a show, I believe. They were really depressed about it, so this song came from that.

    • @continentalaquatics2725
      @continentalaquatics2725 6 лет назад +6

      Bryan Sproles Yes, if I recall correctly, James wrote the song after having his gear stolen. More specifically, it was in regard to an amplifier that got stolen (which was the last material item his Mother bought for him before she passed away).
      James fell into a short bout of depression and wrote this from the perspective of someone who was sold on the idea of taking their own life.
      I don’t know if he was feeling suicidal after having the amplifier stolen, but he was definitely depressed in the wake of the amplifier being stolen.
      I’m glad the song wasn’t a self-fulfilling prophecy. It gives an interesting insight into the mind of someone who is toying with the notion of committing suicide. It’s sad, but educational at the same time.

    I so love how other generations are discovering the awesome sounds of Metallica and the deep lyrics that go with their tunes after over 30 years since the band started. The generation then loved them, my generation was blown away, and now the new generation is captivated by their sound and lyrics.

    Nice pickup on the Joe Satriani call because Kirt Hammet (lead guitarist) was tutored by Joe in his early days. Hence the reason why there's similarities in Kirk's solo style.
    On a side note IMO it's the best song they've ever written with Orion coming in close second

I am psyched to see this show with my 2 boys Joel and Jonas. It is a dad and sons outing and bonding experience. My oldest Joel and I saw Metallica during the Hardwired tour in 2017. Now that James Hetfield is back from treatment I expect a phenomenal show. It will be my 4th Metallica concert. Hope to see you there!!!!! 😇👹

    Such a beautiful melodic depiction of a soul that has lost the will to live and gives up it's struggle to exist... Sad, depressing.... and utterly liberating...
    Beautiful masterpiece..
    Just hearing this song in some very, very, very dark days of my youth... kept me alive. Kind of like hearing in a ballad form of another man's struggle and eventual resigning of to death was enough to keep me from going through with. Almost like feeling that someone else could write such lyrics and understand the emptiness I was feeling at the time, was enough to make me feel I wasn't alone. Enough to pacify that dark urge to let it slide... Thanks so much to these amazing artists of the human condition....

    This has been and likely will always be my favorite song from them. It’s purely anti-suicide in a way only James could write. Musically it’s one of their best composed songs and lyrically it’s hard hitting. This is a song that got me through a lot, and I mean a lot of bad times. Like many others, it saved me multiple times as a teenager. I don’t know if I would still be here if I didn’t have Metallica and my guitar throughout my teenage years.

    • @paulwalsh2344
      @paulwalsh2344 6 лет назад +1

      I can't agree that it's "anti" suicide. I think the real impact of this song is that it genuinely speaks to people hurting: "I know... I get how bad it feels... You are not alone..." and maybe those hurting people realize they aren't alone. And that's the power of great music. It touches people as deeply as their deepest feelings.
      And after the darkest night... the dawn also comes.

    • @mnconservative4616

      Paul Walsh, you nailed it. This is exactly how I feel about it. Listening to Fade to Black gave me an outlet for all the anger, hate, depression, and all the other mixed emotions. Instead of internalizing all of this, it gave me a way to let it all out. Crank up the car stereo and pop in Ride the Lightning, whole album. This song did save me multiple times. I don't think I would have committed suicide, but it did give me an impression of you're not alone. Between that, and all the other metalheads out there, we found new friends, and people who understood us.

      Thanks for the message. Your response reminds me of how for so many years people were told not to talk about suicide to a depressed person. The logic was that it would either give or encourage one to act on their depression/suicidality. We now see how suicide prevention has taken off with the onus of talking about suicidal thoughts and not dismissing them. Take care...

      PinkMetalHead this song and sanitarium I played so much I ruined my cassette tapes. I truly believe without these two songs I wouldn’t be here today. I overcome some real shit and got strength from the songs, and they will live forever in my heart. At a time when depression was taboo and shrugged off I only had music to get my through, and I know I’m not alone. Unfortunately we are still awhile away it seems to recognize that mental illness is the real deal, and we shouldn’t be afraid to admit it to ourselves and not feel ashamed asking for help and taking seriously. Sorry for long post, but I wanted to share my story in a mini tale. Take care all and remember there’s help out there. Love ya!

    Mona/PMH, I did some research too, and found an interview with James Hetfield for Guitar World's 1991's "That song was a big step for us. It was pretty much our first ballad, so we knew it would freak people out... Recording that song, I learned how frustrating acoustic guitar can be. You could hear every squeak, so I had to be careful. I wrote the song at a friend's house in New Jersey. I was pretty depressed at the time because our gear had just been stolen, and we had been thrown out of our manager's house for breaking shit and drinking his liquor cabinet dry. It's a suicide song, and we got a lot of flak for it, as if kids were killing themselves because of the song. But we also got hundreds of letters from kids telling us how they related to the song and that it made them feel better."

    Most beautiful guitar solo arrangement in music history. Not the hardest, not the fastest, but no other guitar solo is so empathetic, fits a song so well like this one in my oppionion - and I heard many. The transition in fade to black is also a masterpiece by itself. It's a 10 out of 10. Well the whole song is actually beyond any scale.

    Metallica changed my life when I was 12 years old. I started playing guitar and it put me on another level of life. I learned every Metallica song by ear note for note. I played for 27 years and now I can't play anymore due to amputations on both hands. The Doctors also went chop happy on my legs as well. I totally relate to the song ONE.. I was in a coma for three months and woke up to missing limbs. All I could think about was suicide. Now, 10 months later I will be getting my new legs this Tuesday morning. When this first happened, all that was in my future was funeral arrangements. Now the sky is the limit. Better yet, the sky's not the limit the ground is so shut up and jump. NO FEAR....
