As a diehard metalhead there is sooo much music out there worthy of a listen/breakdown. I honestly wish there were more time in a day in order to enjoy more of it lol. That being said.. One of my favorite artists is 'King Diamond' .. his albums are concept albums/horror stories where each song continues the story. His vocals are a mix of lows and highs/falsettos depending on the character in the story that is speaking or being sung about. It can be a little jarring if you are not used to it or do not like the vocal style. A great song to listen to is 'Sleepless Nights' off of the 'Conspiracy' album.. it relates a part of the story where the protagonist is awake at night because of the spirits/ghosts.. one of which is his little sister who died in the previous album (THEM). Failing that, the song 'Abigail' from the album 'Abigail' is another popular one.. it is an older album than THEM/Conspiracy but also a concept album itself. Definitely enjoy your breakdowns of the metal you have listened to because you 'get it' on a level which most non-metalheads cannot comprehend. I tip my hat to you.
I've been to two war zones in my military career, Iraq and Afghanistan and let me tell you, Metallica is a first choice of music to keep soldiers pumped not only does it get you going but their lyrics and songs mean a lot due to war. Amazing band who actually care for the soldier not the country and politics.
Always loved this bit of lyrics and how it relates to every war... how many hills have been fought over, lumps of dirt that men give their lives for. Hamburger Hill, Iwo Jima, Bunker Hill... the list goes on. The line just has incredible depth.
I have 2 recommendations for the next Metallica songs, 1. Fade to black - A beautifully crafted Metal ballad about a man contemplating suicide. and then finally does... 2. Creeping Death - A Powerhouse of A Story about the 10 plague's of Egypt of the old testament, From the perspective of the Angel of Death...

@KnoxHill the era with Cliff Burton as the bassist until he tragically passed,is the OG Rabbit hole.... You will be pleasantly surprised on how a bass player like him with a vast musical background contributed to all the albums he was apart of. All Metal bands are heavy influenced by the first 3 albums. Metal Mondays let's go!!
when cliff died metallica steadily went downhill, and justice for all was good but nothing near what the first albums were, and black album was decent, after that they just had a decent song every so often, i personally prefer megadeth, because theyve always been pretty consistent
The 1980’s Metallica guitar rifts are still impactful in 2024 just as they were when the albums was released. This groups albums through 1988 are the best I listened too. It’s cool to see many artists in the metal after 2000 use Metallica as an inspiration and influence, it’s easy to see why. The 88’ album was the first Metallica album I heard. I was born in 1985. This is my second favorite band of all time! The name of the song comes from a poem and it says “Ask not for whom the bell tolls, for it tolls for thee.” Poetic that it’s a part of a song about young men going to war. As a combat veteran you kind have to ask yourself that very question.
Love to see Knox’ reaction to this amazing track. He’s - as usually - spot on. One thing though... he’s not a guitar player, so he doesn’t catch all the intricate guitar fills and harmonized melodies and counter-melodies happening all at the same time. fun fact... the line: faded prima Donna. in the song "the memory remains" is actually from this Hemingway's novel... love how James is committed to his lyrics: One, Creeping death, disposable heroes... and more
Ever since your first Metallica reaction I've been waiting for you to come across Creeping death! Curious to see how fast you catch onto the theme in that one and the following breakdown of it. Keep going, cheers from Sweden!
Not sure if it was mentioned (295 comments) but the bell sound heard at the beginning of the track was actually produced by Lars Ulrich striking an anvil with a metal hammer in combination with a bell from a sound effects reel.
Just so you know. In the early days of the band, James would go to old book stores looking for inspiration. He did indeed see the Hemingway book “For whom the bell tolls”, bought the book and then wrote this song. The same thing was done for the song “One” being based of the anti-war book “Johnny got his gun” by Dalton Trumbo. It was released in 1938, and was about WW1. Then it was turned into the movie by the same name, which was released in 1971 during the Vietnam war. It’s a good movie to boot. There a part that’s NSFW, but nothing terrible, it’s just hinted at and not shown. Let’s just say that there’s a nurse that comes to appreciate our main character after he’s injured horrifically. One of the things a doctor says he could never experience is pleasure. She, definitely proves the doctor wrong.
God I’d love to hear your take on coheed and cambria. They have such evocative lyrics with some amazing music. Their latest titular track for the album, window into a waking mind, is such a great take on fatherhood especially
His knowledge of the Bible and Biblical references he did on LeCrea’s Response to Kendrick was so on point!!! I went to a strict girls Catholic School and still remember everything thing they taught me on Bible and Scripture!!! I used to sing in the choir and do readings occasionally!!! Knox really knows his stuff though on Religion!!! I was all kinds of impressed !!!
Best break down I have heard yet but I believe men of five line was a double for the five Sullivan's as well this song is much deeper then people have ever given it credit for
The line "For whom the bell tolls" is from a poem by john donne titled "No man is an island" and it is believed this is where Hemingway derived his title for the book "For Whom the Bell Tolls."

Love how you mention the music telling a story. They made 3 amazing instrumentals Orion, Call of Ktulu, and To Live is to Die. Listen to them all!
God I’d love to hear your take on coheed and cambria. They have such evocative lyrics with some amazing music. Their latest titular track for the album, window into a waking mind, is such a great take on fatherhood especially
Metallica - "Fade to black" is a must 👍
It's always impressive to see your education on display, Knox.
Hemmingway, Tennyson, maybe check out some Mastodon for the Melville references.
It is definitely one of the aspects that separate him from his reaction peers. I feel like his insight is very educated. It’s refreshing and hopeful
Best break down I have heard yet but I believe men of five line was a double for the five Sullivan's as well this song is much deeper then people have ever given it credit for
Id check out The Day That Never Comes by Metallica
yes!
The line "For whom the bell tolls" is from a poem by john donne titled "No man is an island" and it is believed this is where Hemingway derived his title for the book "For Whom the Bell Tolls."
Good reaction. I liked that you actually knew the book.
Man. You are a treasure in this community.
Just picked up my tickets to see them in Tampa next June. I can’t wait to see them again.
For a good old metal monday reaction give "Davidian" by Machinehead a go. That will get your week going for sure
