If you close your eyes while staring at the sun during the brightest point of the day (or even looking at a light for too long) and then open them.. The brightness and blurred contrast of colors. He perfectly captured how that looks.
Great! Thanks for another awesome resource James. I heard you mention several times in gouache videos (including the drug store) this idea of "painting across" edges. I was hoping to learn more about that in "gouache in the wild" but I did not. When you get a chance, or if you have an open list for FAQ or blog ideas, I would be happy to learn more about that: what do you mean by "the secret to gouache is to paint across edges"? Why? What does it do? Is it true with watercolour/acrylic/casein? Why or why not? Thanks again :D
OK, the quick answer is that you paint over or beyond the outlines of a shape, then when you paint the background of that shape, you paint back over the line a bit. That was you get really interesting edges. This is instead of painting up to the lines, like a coloring book. I'll try to demo this more in a future video.
Thanks a lot! I guess I'm still wondering what is so special about that but I will probably learn it for myself as I do more of it and experience with it :-)
Always love your videos! Wondering about your putting your colors out on a scrap of terrycloth? And the kind of frame you're using for the devised tee shirt sun screen. Thank you for sharing your immense knowledge with us!
Joani, here's more about various sun diffuser options: ruclips.net/video/PM-UoGWbVHw/видео.html The T-shirt was just a way to screen the direct sun coming from the right.
I don't understand exactly how you made your color choices. Did you make them using your intuition mostly, or were you using a more exact method like the color gamut masking method that you have written about before?
The gamut mixing method is best for oils, where you can premix piles of paint in advance of painting. With gouache I either strictly limit the ingredient colors or visualize a narrow range of colors and mix them on the fly. I did the latter on this one.
OK thanks James. I still don't understand 100% crystal clearly about limiting ingredient colors or visualizing narrow ranges of colors, but I do see what you mean a little bit. This painting came out really interesting. Thanks again. Take care.
martart1, I don't understand what you mean. You're asking what use is it to the artist to paint like this? Because it looks really interesting. The colors in this painting have a really interesting and surreal look to them. It almost looks like a dream sequence from a movie or something.
martart1 In my limited experience, working with an almost monochromatic palette helps to perceive and understand values and light better. If you are trying to paint a scene by respecting it's real life colours, you can become too focused on getting the colours right, and forget to observe how the colours actually behave in different types of light and next to other colours. Plus, colour is very important for atmosphere, this particular scene looks like it's a warm summer day, or dusk!! It has so much mood and atmosphere !!
.....just when I was about to say ' How nostalgic, seems like an old photograph'.....
Hi James!!
Thank you so much for your videos!!
Your paintings look very neat for me. It's really exciting and motivating!
KEEP GOING!
How do u know when to pick the right colour? I want to read your mind, clearly you have a very strong imagination which must be super precise!

How r u a such a genius
I really enjoy your videos, helps me a lot with my drawings! Thanks!
You're a total master of chiaroscuro. It's a pleasure to watch you work.
What a charming painting, just as you said , an old photo. Brilliant color choice and motif in my opinion.
Thanks for these amazing color tips! So helpful, thanks.
I love this so much, I want to do this!
The salmon filter
Always a treat to watch you paint. Thanks.
Fantastic job !
You have such accuracy of drawing, you don't need the grid tracing system:) Awesome video as usual.
Thanks, Jun. Actually the grid system is helping me spot persistent errors in my freehand estimates that I had not noticed before.
Just love watching you work !! Fabulous creativity and talent :-)))
Wonderful and educational!
Thats massive! Massive!💚
Beautiful work..

Great painting. I love it.
Reminds me of a old picture. That sepia and white photo or brown and white
And then you say exactly that lol
Excelente trabalho, muito legal, parabéns!
Your work amazes me !! 😳
Beautiful!
Reminds me of Claude Monet 😀
wow looks realistic..
Perfect.

Joani Stotler It's probably a wet cloth so that the paint doesn't dry out outside. I do something similar with acrylics.
Oh thanks, Raquel, that makes sense - I paint with oils.
Joani, Yes, it's as Raquel said, a damp scrap of cloth keeps the paint alive longer.
Cool! Smart idea.

Mr. James Guney why did you use that green under lineing painting for the green tree's.
Thank you for this video. Do you have a tutorial on gow to use this grid method for drawing?
Thanks in advance
Ali, I plan to do a whole video on viewfinders and grids in the future. Will explain all and discuss pros and cons.
Very cool

Seeing Myriam in the comments of a Gurney video made my day, wow!
I want to do something like this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So abstract and low chroma but it works!
So nice and special colors! Just think the sound effect at the end is a little bit heavy
a wild west town...
I still dont really understand what the light green first layer is about could maybe someone explain it for me again? 😅
It just adds a challenge and forces me to use paint in every area to cover.
How many towns have u visited so far?
😀👏🎨👍🇧🇷
Do you have any videos on how to do the grid system?
Hi, Ron, No, not yet. That's one I'm working on.
watch out with your knife James. don't cut yourself
this is lovely
