Gouache Preliminary Sketches: Fast, Fun, and Low-Risk Painting Techniques

- James Gurney demonstrates how you can use gouache, watercolor, and water-soluble colored pencils to paint preliminary compositional studies before embarking on a final illustration. He paints one sample thumbnail sketch in real time using transparent watercolor, then films the creation two other layout concepts in time lapse. He also demonstrates how he uses scaled-down laser prints of the final line drawing glued down with acrylic matte medium in order to test ideas for color schemes.
The final paleo-art paintings were created in oil, and were used to illustrate an article on T.rex that appeared in the May issue of Ranger Rick Magazine.

Just like a magician performing his magic trick directly in front of you.... you can see what he's doing quite clearly but you still have absolutely no idea how they just did that.
I felt this. I tried following his tutorials but ended not finishing it and left me confused.

Love your techniques, my grandmother was an artist of northern Michigan light houses, the shores of the great lakes, the lilacs of Mackinaw Island, I loved watching her paint at her easel, hearing only those beautiful sounds an occasional brush strokes on canvas, the stirring if her brushes tapping off of her glass rinse water container, and the sounds of birds and Summer breeze, or a thunder storn which she also painted many storms on the great lakes, or in the evening summer months the coyotes and mysterious looms. Winter time, she loved Christmas, so her classic. Records of Carol's ... We lived just 2 miles from sturgeon Bay, beautiful lake Michigan, in Bliss Michigan. I after some years just entering teenager hood, she offered me a brush and a canvas if me own, and a small easel.... That was one of my many favorite days with this beautiful women. I was given that small easel again, with two wooden boxes filled with paints brushes, chalks, colored pencils and more, my mother said, "she wanted you to have these". I felt just as honored as the day she introduced them to me and my lifelong love for painting. She passed away last year at the age of 89. One if my first videos to watch as I am getting back into the my favorite hobby .... Thank you so much! Wonderful video's and excellent teaching, easy to fallow and to listen. I was dinosaur crazy as a kid. The idea that such a thing actually walked the earth at one time was really intriguing. You bring this to life.

One thing i always get stuck on is how you start with something crude and with further layers add life to it.
When I try to do it, it just gets worse haha, way to improve!
Really its just starting from big building blocks then going to smaller.
Like how he just splashed some color there at first, then you just continue with smaller splashes of color thinking about the plains of the object your doing.
A lot of people go straight for the small details but you have to start big and get your building blocks done then you can add the nitty gritty. Hopefully that helped a bit quq/
you'd be surprised how it begins to become Automatic once you've done it literally thousands of times. He's on auto pilot mode at his point of his artistic journey. It's like installing a program into your hard drive as opposed to streaming something through a crappy connection - thats how it always feels in the beginning.

Yes, gouache is a very "friendly" water medium, as you are experiencing, very versatile as you see with wash and opaque ranges. I started with it many years ago doing bird paintings (which are really just evolved dinosaurs, lol). Now doing oil landscapes en plein air, but a nice studio session doing birds in acrylic and also gouache is very inviting, if out door painting not an option! I'm inspired, especially after seeing this video.

Your sketching skills are indescribable! In a good way. I took art lessons as a kid, outside of school, in the next town over. They never used any of the pre-painting methods you use, James. Mostly we’d make perfect the drawing/sketch. Then transfer the image onto the paper/canvas from the original sketch. Then, paint. Watercolor, Oil painting, & Acrylic painting were what I learned. I wasn’t able to continue using Oils, due to breathing issues from the turpentine. I’m only just now, learning about the how-to for Gouache. I love your videos! Since I haven’t been actively engaged in my Art for decades, I’m hoping to rekindle my love for creating my own Art. So, TYSM for the upload, man!!!

You can also laser print directly on your watercolor paper if your machine is set up for that.
What the heck is matte medium? Is this a generic term for something lots of manufacturers make?

Hi James. I was just thinking, if you haven't tried this that it might be a great technique in this case. If you mirror your line drawing in Photoshop then print it out on a black and white laser printer you can then use that print to do an acetone print or "transfer" directly on to a suitable paper or board. Simply put the printed paper face down onto another piece of paper, wood, canvas or whatever you wish to print on. Take a rag with acetone and rub it on the backside of the printed paper. The acetone will dissolve the black pigment just enough that it will transfer over without bleeding. You will get very fine detail. You could also try wetting with acetone then rubbing with the round back of a spoon to really get it to transfer over. This can be very useful in some high detail cases. Good luck!

The Kazu Sano method! I don't know who at Nat geo came up with it or when, but I learned this copy paper technique from him in college. I think I got a lot of good paintings out of it because there's so much room to experiment and just have fun. Thank you for sharing it with us as well, love watching the process

The preliminaries look pretty damn good to me, they have a directness and simplicity that can get lost in the final rendering. James Gurney and Greg Manchess are the modern day masters, I'd love to know if there's anyone else, maybe Ian McAig?

The preliminaries are so nice. Too bad the copies from a printer are probably not archival. On the other hand, making copies is a time saver and lets you get on with the business of finishing the "final picture." Do you save all your work? James, thanks so much for your videos!

artist there and some awesome scenery . I challenge you to visit there for a feast for your eyes. I did buy a used paperback of Dinotopia. I loved the artwork.
Every so often I'm lucky and experience a Bob Ross "Happy Accident" and run across another one of you short teaching videos. Thank you. I do have a perplexing question... I have NO formal training in the field of Art (in particular). How do I go about selecting colors that make each other compliment each other and give my paintings eye catching appeal. Every painting that I've completed I have watched multiple RUclips art vids and just "played around." Recently I purchased some gouache paints but like my transparent watercolors, just do have any knowledge with color theory or how to chose colors based on the values.
So I'm open to suggestions and directions. Thank you.

Is this normal copy paper for the bigger studies?
Yes, just a laser print on cheap copy paper. Once it's glued down to heavy illustration board, it is stable and won't wrinkle or curl.
@@JamesGurney right, plus the over lay with the medium you used to glue it down would give a pleasant surface for working!

Considering the exquisite compositions and detail in DINOTOPIA, I can't imagine you not having any art from Tolkien's world. I love the Tolkien books, but never felt moved to illustrate them. So many great artists out there doing it already.

James Thanks so much for all of the information...I have a couple of questions I hope someone can answer..I e-mailed Jerrys and never received a reply..So here goes... what is the difference between Acrylic paint and Acrylic Gouache paint (white)?? I understand Gouache is water based and can and will lift when re-wet..I assume Acrylic Gouache does not?? As far a covering opacity which is superior Acrylic Gouache OR casein??? .I have and do use Winsor Newtons Designer permanent White ., whit mixed results. There are so many different whites and selections from which to choose?? I really just had these question and would appreciate answers. Thought I'd try it to rectify some of my plein aire mistakes.. Thanks,again
Regular gouache is water based and can be lifted/reworked after drying, but acrylic gouache is different. Acrylic gouache is really acrylic paint with additives that make it more matte and less shiny. When it dries fully, it's permanent and won't be reactivated with water.
Zoe said it exactly right. Not sure which white has the most opacity. In terms of pigments, Titanium is generally more opaque than zinc.
@@JamesGurney I've used all three water mediums (acrylic, watercolor, gouache) in the same bird (aka flighted dinosaurs, lol) paintings, for their different desirable painting qualities! Do what works best; you won't be arrested for it,.. at least not where I live,... yet! LOL :D
