There is something so much more wonderful about your channel than other art channels. I never feel like you are telling me how I should draw or the type of forms and shapes that I should use like so many others. You are just showing how you draw and talking about the wonderful and technical things that swim through your head when you paint and make art. Your channel is such a wonderful breath of air on this platform and I love all of your work!
Seemed to be part of the log he was burrowing in. Quit the contrast to poetry and painting. The painting was lovely but I am not there yet to grasp the variation in shapes and texture.
I love how you can take all the chaos of light, shadows, leaves and branches and make a cohesive depiction of a patch of wilderness. Also love that you take Smooth on your plein air excursions :) Thanks also for showing his drink of water!
I was floored by how suddenly the painting came together! I know there were jump cuts but geez, suddenly a lovely simple "blocked in" style landscape was so intricate! Truly lovely.
holy shit i just found out who you are! you made Dinotopia? what are the odds, i just find a interesting art video by random (this video if your wondering), and then i find out you made a very important part of my childhood.
Only Artist I watch on RUclips,.. I worked as an Artist for the entertainment industry, billboard artist, sign painter, sculptor,...watching you paint made me break out my paints again, this old man thanks you....
How I love your videos. So much more than just wonderful painting instruction. Thanks for inspiring the adventurer in all of us! By the way, Smooth has the ultimate dog's life!
Smooth is such a beautiful dog! It was almost as much of a treat to watch him play and get up to trouble as it was to watch you paint this scene. Your location reminds me very much of the spaces where I used to camp and hike every summer in Northern Oregon. Beautiful!
Delightful painting from an English lady who loves painting in our woods and yes we have lanes and footpaths all over the country, on a sunny day you meet people just happy to be with nature 👍🏻💖🇬🇧
this is MASTERY. I am so inspired with the poetry & philosophy you weave through these presentations. the final look of the piece is so well varied & full of entrancing interest! thank you always!
right? It was refreshing. Most people just yell at their dogs and tell em to stop whenever they get into something. They came from wolves! Dont forget that and let them do their thing lol
Kinda reminded me of when Evil Kinevil jumped the grand canyon. Lol. Smooth was tearing that log up. You may go back and that footpath may be paved....Great painting
Oh, I can SO empathize with that inability to get off the road...even in our local state park, unless you care to park in one of the parking lots and keep to the asphalt path around the lake, you can't get at some of most interesting things to sketch! But you ARE inspiring me to get my gouache out again, thank you James!
This video is so beautiful, with the music and the surroundings, and the dog pouncing around, totally bringing out the joy of the Plein air experience. Thank you for making this!
thank you so much. It's so précious... the place, yours comments about the wildness... and of course, first at all your painting, tips and explications. Very précious !
thank you for all the educational and entertaining videos, Sir James. If anything, your faithfulness to painting, to art, (for me at the least) is what makes your content unique and precious. also, the effort for cinematography and other visual effects is much appreciated ❤ moving forward, I intend to pick up color and painting as parts of my own practice; to have Sir James as my first "mentor/teacher", it is an honor. Thank you for ever gracing RUclips, Sir James. Stay safe and healthy.
Wow, painting a forest has been one of the most challenging concepts to me. The lighting, complex shapes, and depth seems so difficult to capture but you make it look easy. This is such a beautiful piece and uses some of my favorite colors. I love that Smooth got to have fun too.
I think this is the thread or fourth time I've watched this video. As good this time as the first. I really like the dark over light. Thanks for sharing
Loving your videos, James. There's some mesmerizing quality to them, you masterfully control viewer's attention and watching him/her not to get bored of repetitive actions. Mixing it with footage of your dog for example, or with some interesting facts. And it feels so warm and magical, like an old fantasy movie. Paintings are fantastic and there are a lot of valuable information and methods. Please, keep doing what you do.
Really well explained. If I had my dog along I’d be unable to continuously focus on my painting and him too! Kudos for keeping your focus and temperament positive.
I love watching you paint and always learn something. I have the worst time with greens. I usually end up with it all looking the same color green. Your doggie is having the time of his life going painting with you, sweet!
Beautifully shot! I notice so much more about editing now that I've started making my own videos. And what an amazing dog and so well trained! Thank you for all the time and effort you put into sharing your amazing work with us James!
Love the info you provide as you painted The Green Footpath. Beautiful results. Smooth was quite entertaining too. He had me chuckling as he crawled through the hollow fallen tree and began chomping on the bark.
Very happy for discovering this channel! Painting a forest is one of my dreams, but for the moment I only made a mess 🤔☺ Greetings from Italy and thank you so much. A hug to your furry friend 🍀🌲
This is so wonderful to watch. I have just gotten into gouache, and with some frustration I've come to some realisations that you often talk about in your videos. Like how you should paint the large shapes first then the details on top - that has made things not only so much easier, but more fun too. It's fun to change your perspective on what you're seeing. But I really enjoy how you give more tips, describing how you're using the brush and the effects it can make - that is really helpful. These videos remind me of nature writers, they tell you a lot about what is going on, but inject it with some poetic or artistic vision. The snapshots of Smooth, close up detail shots of the leaves, and the context and background you give on every video makes this such a joy. (I live in UK and had no idea about these restrictions in America - it really is a pity because what beautiful landscapes you have!) It's not just a painting video, but seems like a snapshot from your life. Others have already commended you for your production quality, it really is amazing, but it's also the content put into it which feels both natural and so joyful. :) Even the music is a treat. I’ve always been a watercolour purest but after seeing your handling of gouache I’m going to give it a go, I’ve had some tubes of gouache sitting in my box that I won for something a while back and am excited at having a go. Lovely paintings you do. And hay a dogs go to eat.....
So appealing. The outro was so cool too! Never seen anything like it
Here's a video about how to make your own RUclips endscreen gadget: ruclips.net/video/QDpuHKxKFvQ/видео.html
James: Let me paint this place
Smooth: Let me eat this place
"What are you eating? Don't eat that." < The life of every dog owner. 🤣
Or parent lol

Your channel is such a wonderful breath of air on this platform and I love all of your work!
Thank you so much 😀
Your welcome!!!
The mystery of 'what was Smooth eating?' will now haunt me forever
Jonny English however if there are farms nearby and horse paths and I believe there are, then nice tasty manure may be on the menu if Smooth is lucky.
Seemed to be part of the log he was burrowing in. Quit the contrast to poetry and painting. The painting was lovely but I am not there yet to grasp the variation in shapes and texture.

Dogs are so awesome.
That is the most dog I’ve ever seen a dog be
I'm really jealous of your ability to look at a scene and interpret exactly how you need to layer the colors to create the image!
Mr Gurney, you seem to have life all figured out in the best kind of way.
Fernando Pessoa és o verdadeiro Fernando pessoa?
I love it when you include your dog in your videos, he is the star!
That jump was some James Bond stuff😂
James Gurney shadow in the beginning of the video made him look like he had a humongous back side 😄
I wear my Fanny Pack with pride!
Curvy Gurney Journey.. Sorry
Directed by Terrence Malick
So lush. Smooth is lucky to have you.
He also has a blog that's also very informative.

that path is so dreamy. it's taking me back to a memory i've never had before and you captured it so well to your painting, i love it.
that's lovely. I don't think I could paint outdoors with my dog. I concentrate on her and what she's does.
Smooth is such a beautiful dog! It was almost as much of a treat to watch him play and get up to trouble as it was to watch you paint this scene. Your location reminds me very much of the spaces where I used to camp and hike every summer in Northern Oregon. Beautiful!
Fantastic glimpse of rural America in summer. I need to use my gouache more.
Delightful painting from an English lady who loves painting in our woods and yes we have lanes and footpaths all over the country, on a sunny day you meet people just happy to be with nature 👍🏻💖🇬🇧
beautiful thank you!
this is MASTERY. I am so inspired with the poetry & philosophy you weave through these presentations. the final look of the piece is so well varied & full of entrancing interest! thank you always!
Ive never seen a dog act so primal it was so amazing and pure haha what a cutie.
right? It was refreshing. Most people just yell at their dogs and tell em to stop whenever they get into something. They came from wolves! Dont forget that and let them do their thing lol
Beautiful James! I enjoy learning how you break down into manageable steps such a complex scene .Give Smooth a pet for me..
This was a good study of light and dark colour.
Kinda reminded me of when Evil Kinevil jumped the grand canyon. Lol. Smooth was tearing that log up. You may go back and that footpath may be paved....Great painting
Thank you for reminding me (with your socks) to protect against ticks when I go out sketching this weekend!
Right, and when you get back, strip down and have someone "look you over"!! ;)
And chiggers, talk about misery. I usually spray bug spray on my lower legs, one with high deet percentage.
Awwww Smooth looks SO happy frolicking in the grass and in that log that he’s digging at and gnawing on ❤️ beautiful painting also
Hope he didn't get any ticks
I would love to see more videos in nature! Beautiful! Thank you for this!
Love your painting but love your pup even more! Really nice pup and beautiful painting.
I love how u see opportunities in common/distinct places

I love your dog just being a dog.

Man Smooth has really been enjoying himself, great painting James Gurney mother nature is beautiful.
thank you so much. It's so précious... the place, yours comments about the wildness... and of course, first at all your painting, tips and explications. Very précious !
That was very pleasant. I enjoyed Smooth as much as the painting. Thanks!
So enjoyable to watch and great lessons. Love Smooth!

happy to know, sir ☺ 🙆♂️ ⭐
You did a really good job with your greens. I enjoy the way you share your commentary on doing the painting.Thank you!

Great story teller and outstanding painter.

I like how you explain why you do what you do, so helpful!
I could listen to him for hours, I like to draw and this inspires me but I don’t want to get up because his voice is so mesmerizing
Brilliant, always love your videos, and you are so right about the English footpaths.
Really well explained. If I had my dog along I’d be unable to continuously focus on my painting and him too! Kudos for keeping your focus and temperament positive.

Love the direct approach and the acute observations interpreted in the brush stokes!

Smooth was really being a typical dog on this day
This is so wonderful to watch.

Your videos are like meditation to me. Thank you, James!
