    I have a Folio palette for dried gouache as well as a Portable Painter Classic palette for gouache. I love them both. I really like using dried gouache over fresh for the same reasons you mentioned… I hate wasting paint if I squeeze out too much and I don’t like the additional time it takes to get ready if you need to select all your paints from the tube each session. Lovely video!

    I love dried gouache. I use Holbein, W&N, and Schmincke. To prevent it from cracking or crumbling I use honey, but I read that Qor WC medium or W&N Watercolor medium works better and does not dry sticky.

      Thank you! I may give a try to watercolor medium or glycerin next time, at least for the colors that dried the most, like the emerald green.

      How do you add the honey? I have used glycerine and I used the toothpick to pick it up, then to mix it…I have a ton of honey, and less glycerine so this might be a nice thing to try at some point!

      Hi does W&N watercolor medium mean gum arabic? Which is more effective? Medium or glycerin?

    • @LudwinV
      @LudwinV 4 дня назад

      @@JessicaCEP I use Maimeri honey medium for watercolor which is just honey and a bit of water and additives to make it easy to mix. It reduces cracking when dried in a palette and makes it easier to rewet. Use only a little bit because if you add too much it will be sticky.

    • @LudwinV
      @LudwinV 4 дня назад

      @@reshuhoney94 I mean the W&N watercolor blending medium, which is different from plain gum Arabic. W&N doesn't disclose what the medium is but it seems to be a similar to Aquazol (What Qor uses for their watercolors).

    Hi Julie! I loved your video and your tips! I use a drop of glycerin mixed with the gouache, so it won't crumble when it dries.

    Hi Julie! I have tried both dried gouache and wet gouache straight from the tube, but my experience with them depends on the brand I am using. For Daniel Smith, I have no issue using them dried as the colours still come out opaque/semi-opaque, creamy and they dry/cure again really well after. I can't say the same however for my Holbein gouache, as after a few sessions with them outdoors, they started crumbling very quickly even after adding glycerine in it. So what I do now is carry a tube of white gouache or buff titanium with me and just use the others dried.
    Otherwise, always wanted the try the LeFranc Bourgeois gouache but they only have the academy and the kids range available in my country.

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette  23 дня назад

      Thank you for sharing that, I'll keep that in mind if I decide to try another brand! For now I'm sticking with Lefranc-Bourgeois because it's easily accessible to me and I have nothing to complain about - but I was curious to try Holbein... Not so much anymore. I think it's a good idea to have fresh white on hand.

    Thank you for the video! I think I will try gouache this way as I have found the workflow of gouache coming from watercolor quite strange. The water content is unpredictable, the value when dry changes and it never seems to be the texture I expect when putting it on the page.
    The mat quality is nice and I like how it shows brushstrokes but blending out shadows without mixing every color for the transition is weirdly difficult. The previous layers pigment always seems to lift off no matter how dry the layer is.

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette  Месяц назад +3

      Yes I don't like when people say gouache is opaque watercolor, for me those are two very distinct mediums, that can work together, but using one's workflow for the other doesn't give the best results... As you say, I find that with gouache I have to mix transition colors rather than blending.
      For the water content, I think it largely comes with practice. About the value shift when it dries, after one year using gouache I'm starting to anticipate it more intuitively, but until now I swatched every color on a separate strip of paper and let it dry before applying to my painting! Another thing is that the more watery your mix is, the more it's going to shift as it dries (the less you dilute the paint, the less dramatic the shift).
      Pigments lifting are the other major problem of gouache. Besides letting it dry fully, the only thing you can do is be as direct with your brushstrokes as possible, don't fuss around at all, because once a wet layer is on top of the previous ones, it reactivates: you only have one chance, one stroke to cover it. Glazing is especially difficult and requires not only a gentle touch, but also extra soft brushes.
      You also want to work thick on thin: start with more diluted layers and finish with your thicker paint, to prevent lifting too much.
      I hope that helps a little bit!

    • @ej9549
      @ej9549 Месяц назад

      Yes thank you! I will keep that in mind for my next attempts.
      I think you are right in saying it is not much like watercolor at all, other than water being used to activate it. Perhaps it's best if I discard my knowledge of watercolor entirely since they behave so differently.
      Thank you again for the video and happy painting!

    I've used a dried gouache pallet for my calligraphy and illumination projects for decades and have never experienced problems. The only time I experienced a failed project was when I used the gouache fresh out of the tube. It was a red paint and the binder had partially separated in the tube. The paint never, ever dried and I had to throw the project away and start over. Ever since then, I ALWAYS dry the pallet first.

      Either gouache or egg tempera is what is generally used. I know some folks who will go so far as to make their paint from scratch, but I’m part of a historical recreation group and we can be a little obsessed about it. 😀

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette  28 дней назад

      I get the appeal of making your own paint! I wouldn't go as far as grinding my pigments, but I could make gouache 😊
      I find it interesting that you use egg tempera on paper, the common advice from fine arts egg tempera painters seems to be that you should only use it on a rigid support... And it's been preventing me from practicing as much as I would like unfortunately.

    I've painted with gouache straight from the tube and after it's dry - I dislike using gouache straight from the tube because it is too thick - I have painted some pictures that I like with it when I first started using it, but it's like trying to paint with acrylic paint that has not been watered down. It's very difficult to get detail with it. I've also found that you can reactive it once it's dry because it just sits on top of the paper if it's thick and I always worry that I will ruin a painting by getting it wet again. Recently, I used it like watercolour and I very much prefer the results and it doesn't reactivate if you get it wet again once it's dried into the paper. Of course, if you use it like watercolour, you need to use watercolour paper, but I prefer using it that way.

    Hi Julie. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad).
    I'm a wildlife & nature artist, mainly in watercolor and dry mediums, but recently I started using Gouache (traditional one, not acrylic) and I had the same doubts as you have... Wet right from the tube? (Since I'm not sure yet, this is what I've doing so far for each painting but it's not practical for me). Should I use instead an airtight palette? (I see other artists use them and it feels a lot of work to jeep the Gouache creamy whilst avoiding mold build up - I HATE to waste paint!) Or... should I use a dry palette like for watercolors? (this I think is the most convenient and stress free approach but will I loose paint consistency and its opacity?).
    I've watched Sarah Burns using it dry on plein air and it seems to work well for sketches and I just found you on RUclips and saw this video which is exactly focusing on my concerns.
    I have W&N Designers (Artist grade) Gouache so I don't know if there will be a difference with how the paint behaves.
    What do you think about dry Gouache? I mean... have you've been able to try it outside? Does it perform normally?
    I have started to do some Urban Sketching as well with watercolors but I want to be able to take 2 travel palettes, one for Gouache too, in order to increase my artistic options.
    Sorry for such a long message and I hope you can provide some additional feedback based on your experience. As for most artists... I have a small budget and can't afford to make many mistakes when finding a solution to a problem and buying the necessary materials (if you know what I mean).
    In any case, thank you for sharing your opinions and your Art, and just wanted you to know that you have a New subscriber.
    Cheers from Sunny Spain!

      Thank you for your comment! There's no such thing as a too long comment 😊
      I wish I could give you a review of an air tight palette but I never tried those for 2 reasons: I don't like plastic, I find it unpleasant and I want to surround myself with tools I enjoy using, and it also looks like too much maintenance to prevent mold.
      I haven't used my dried gouache outside yet, I tend to use watercolor more, but I used it a couple more times for some small paintings at home. One thing I didn't address in the video is that it takes some work to get the paint, it gets harder as it dries and you have to go in more aggressively with your brush to pick some paint... Which I don't mind, because I use relatively cheap synthetic brushes.
      For me, it performs normally. I also added a small pan of dried titanium white to my watercolor palette and I have been able to use it for highlights where I couldn't save the white of the paper - it's never as white as the paper, but that's the same with fresh gouache.
      If waste is your biggest concern here, I would reuse an empty pack of pills (like I show at the beginning of my watercolor palette video) to try out a dried gouache palette, with little paint. It's going to dry faster, and if it doesn't work out for you you won't have wasted more than what you'd use fresh for one painting... Whereas an airtight wet palette contains typically more paint.
      I hope that's helpful, let me know how it goes for you!

      Hi Julie. Jim again. Merçy Beaucoup! for taking the time to answer.
      I have made a decision to use a Dry Gouache palette and see how it goes. I like it for portability reasons as well as lower maintenance issues and if, as you confirm, the paint quality and opacity dies not suffer (or very little due to rehidration and all) I think it's the most practical alternative since I use multiple mediums and I need them accessible when needed (I use each medium when I feel the need to use that medium and time goes by between uses between each medium).
      Again, thank you for your help and kind reply.
      Cheers from Sunny Spain!
      😁👍😎✌

    that palette is nice, but another artist on youtube shared her travel palettes and when she opened her art toolkit palette the metal pans inside had rusted. she said that happens with that palette. what is your experience up until now?

    • @Julie.Miette

      I didn't have them for very long, but so far, no rust at all. I sometimes use a lot of water but I always clean up my palette before putting away (I never let paint puddles dry in there, I like to start a painting with a clean palette)... If rust happened I'd contact Art Toolkit, they're supposed to be rust-proff, so I'd consider this a defect.
