Good question, Laurie. The base color gives me something to influence the colors that I place over it. Warm colors add a snap under the cool snow, kind of like hot sauce on noodles. If I want, I can totally cover it up.
@@JamesGurney Thank you very much James, I saw on the web that this is useful for increasing the color depth. Like a prima painting, or al fresco ...? I will try! ; °) Thank you for your response and all that you share.
I suppose he could have asked to paint their house, but they might have said: "Yes, we know it really needs it, but we just don't have the cash right now for you to paint it!"
I was thinking the same thing but it would give him the opportunity to show his awesome painting to the cops. It's just advertising and he could give the officer's his info and when they go back to explain the situation to the home owners he could get a commission from that.
Average Joe: "I wish I could capture this from a bird's-eye view. Oh well." Gurney: "Hey all, today we're gonna look at my handy hang glider easel mount made from scrap wood and lego." Nothing stops this man. :)
It's often said: there are painters, and there are artists. I think the definition of an artist is: creativity in all ways, especially apparatus that helps us do what we love. I've made something for myself, with a friends help...for a similar purpose. It works very well. Lifelong painter here...😊
I absolutely LOVE that you're out here painting in your CAR! This is something I would do. I'm finally coming into my own to not feel "weird" for doing so. I'm so happy to find others like myself.
I like how you have your watch in the screen so we can see how long it takes to do a painting. I personally have never painted but after watching your videos (which I discovered your channel just yesterday) I would love to start painting.
Man i live by the coast and the sunset here is amazing you get orange, pink, white, blue, maroon just dufferent colors and i was watching his vid on one if those days, and i bought a beginners set and im just loving his guides!
It’s your attitude + talent (hard work) x understanding wife = successful life, not to mention your kindness to share and ability to teach. Simply, “Thank You”.
I just got home , after doing a small painting ( my first time with gouache outdoors) while in my car... you, and Jared ( loves to draw) were in the back of my mind the whole time!!! You are both such an inspiration to me, and I learn so much each time I watch you guys and listen to your thoughts as you paint.. thank you so much !!!

Is there anything you can’t paint that makes it not interesting? You amaze me every time! A parking lot? A house by a busy street? You inspire us all to JUST PAINT IT! Thank you for always sharing, I get excited when I see new postings. Big thank you hugs!
This reminds me of me painting on the huge steering wheel of my school bus! Most Saturdays I drove athletic teams to compete in other school districts and always took my watercolors along and it helped to pass the hours waiting. Great fun!
James, Thank you very much for this video! I also draw from the car and have long wondered how to install my sketchbook on the steering wheel of a car. Your invention will now help me to do my pleasure while sitting in my place! You are James, a treasure trove of knowledge and useful inventions, so necessary for artists !!!
James thank you so much. I have your easel my nephew made it for me and I love it. I paint from my car a lot because I have trouble walking. But usually I try to just hold my journal in my hands this is awesome thank you so much. I've only been doing watercolor painting for like a year and a half and I love them so hopefully this spring and summer I could do a lot more sitting in my car thank you.
There are many good watercolor books, depending on what you're interested in, but the one by Joseph Zbukvic is great if you like doing his kind of city scenes.
Thank you, Mr.Gurney, your books and videos encouraged me to leave my comfort zone and I'm going to do some plein air paintings starting this Spring. Greetings from Saint Petersburg, Russia.
I personally love painting loosely in impressionist style; with some form of abstraction through brushwork. Your composition, brushwork and color choices are interesting and admirable, especially the split brush technique which is quite clever. I might try that technique for painting bushes and plants.
Your artwork is genius. It starts as blobs of paint and finishes like a master copy of the original. I'm so happy I stumbles upon your work. You speak so well and I'm totally relaxed and engrossed. Subscribed!
I love your tenacity to paint anywhere, in any condition, as much I like your paintings and teaching tips. It is always a pleasure to see your posts in my email, EVERYDAY. Thanks for sharing EVERYTHING!
Wow, you are the best James. I've watched your previous videos on building wooden pallets and holders and these are the things that true artists bring into the world, creativity in every aspect of life. You are truly one of the greats as a painter, and then you bring in the dimension of building a steering wheel holder. It's just brilliant man...modern Master...
Man! you are so good. You inspire me to paint and get better at it every day. I am mainly an acrylics guy but I've been really wanting to switch back to watercolors seeing your videos.
That steering wheel contraption is a wonderful idea! I like the idea of plain air drawing and painting but I’m a wimp and can’t stand it when bugs are flying around. Maybe doing something like this will help. Your channel inspires me so much.
Wow you could copyright that floogle-binder you invented for the steering wheel as well as your well known easel, and they would sell like crazy. I’d be first in line. Loved the painting today also. Beautiful.
Genius!! That is such a cool idea. I used to love to sketch in the car when my kids would nap because for a time that was the only place they would. Some of my demos were recorded during those naps :) awesome demo. Thanks for the cool idea.
Never too late. E. A. Abbey, one of the greatest illustrators, started painting in his 40s, and Norman Mingo did a lot of his best MAD covers in his 70s.

I thought i lost all my artistic drive and inspiration and should just leave it. (Artistic burnout). But then this construction site was there, inspiration struck, und then your videos gave me the courage to try gouache, try limited palette, try new thinks. Just for the sake of it. And im so grateful i can draw and paint again.
Brilliant,.. ingenious,... useful,...anything else? Oh yeah, I want one! I have a little 6x8 thumb box pochade from Open Box M that works well too, for oils. I used to paint out of the back of my truck with shell in Tahoe, in snow, that worked ok, but I got cold, better to be inside where you can turn a heater on. Now I'm in AZ where it is too hot sometimes outside to paint, but ways can be found like this, and turn A/C on every once in a while!!
Excellent James just a quick FYI if you where to cut strip of an old bicycle inner tube and bond it to the curved size is the steering wheel support it may very well add to the stability of the whole wasp kindest regards Mick T

Hello James, wonderfull "job" and wonderfull "tips and tricks".. I have a question. why do you coat your paper with casein before painting ?? Thanks

There's a nice spot outside a police station around here where i did a drawing once. But yes, this could be a consideration surely
