James Gurney are you familiar to the dutch painter Rien Poortvliet?
Yes, I love his work and have most of his book (the ones in English, anyway).
Jochem Witteveen wow, what an amazing painter. Thanks for sharing.
One of my favorites. His work takes you to another world
yes! Rien Poortvliet and James Gurney - both are for me mindbogglingly amazing.
I love the way you find beauty in everyday things that most take for granted. BTW your Color and Light book is great read and reference. I found it very instructional and useful as a photographer even though the book is aimed at painting. :) Thanks for sharing your artistry through these great videos.
You explained to me the concept of measuring with a pencil with a few simple words, amazing.
What an excellent composition. You make detail so easy. Sometimes it’s the most basic things that make the difference. And I am impressed with your printing on such a small sign! Ha. Beautiful work.
Thanks, Sharon. I love working tiny.
You are so good at what you do!! Wow!
Your not only an amazing artist. But also extremely good teacher. I dont think ive ever learned that much from a tutorial. Thank you
this guys, man. I swear to god. he has the science and the heart perfectly aligned plus an incredible talent for explaining things. even his voice or editing..just wow.
Gorgeous painting. I love how you take a seemingly simple scene and give it new life.
Jim, thanks so much. I appreciate your attention to detail and great tips. I've learned quite a bit from you, thanks again. Phil from Ohio
James, you are a magician! How you can control paint so well and include so much detail in small piece is truly remarkable! I enjoy all of your videos.
The way he writes the tiny letters with a brush 🔥
I remeber seeing this last year, just saw it again, and learned more! mr. Gurney, your a great inspiration! and a great teacher! I went to an art school, and i can see that your a master at perspective, the use of color, and creating a mood.! wow!
Nice job James. I hope you can do your work for many more years.
Only because of you I thoroughly enjoy gouache.....I thank you from bottom of my heart
i work mostly in digital, but you are really making me want to give gouache a try. I find the process a little terrifying but your results are wonderful. I love your work.
Your videos put me in such a peaceful state of mind, and your way of painting is very inspiring! Only wish the videos were longer.
Love when you made the 3 keys it helps focus for beginners when there is so much too learn thanks!
Lovely painting and excellent video. It’s done so seamlessly that I think some viewers might overlook the high production values of the video overlays, narration, etc. Really well done. Thank you!
Woaw I love that old school style of painting and format of film like old school TV painting show, I really love it!!
Love your videos. Always look forward to them. They are well done, informative and very entertaining.
Thank you for the video which is loaded with tips. I really enjoyed the initial wet wash that gave you time to add the darker background that looked like a watercolor wash. Then at the end all the adjustments you made for the light and dark, and the chalk to add a little haze. Essie
I am so amazed at how you’re so detail and talented!
HOOKED! I feel like I'm cheating watching your generous videos because they're just too good to be true that they're free to learn from and enjoy. You've got me all excited about plein-air painting and gouche. Appreciate the tips about using pencils, chalk and gel pens. Question: How do you seal your art when finished?
Had to come back and watch this one again. Great work!
Inspiring, as always James!
Wooo a Gurney video over 5 mins long! I enjoyed every second.
Nice video and the outro was fun with you letting those clips snap open. It caught my intention, making me watch all the signs go up. Normally I often click away after the main part of the video is over but you managed to made me stay. Very well done!
Great work! You have some of the best made art videos out there
This is so cool! I miss your videos since I wasn't able to get around to watching them. I love your sense of originality in everything you do! :D
That outtro was so cool!!
Thank you for such generosity in sharing all your knowledge! ❣️
Love the intro effect, how your painting turned into an image from a camera.

Thank you, very helpful indeed and engagingly presented - it makes me want to get my gouache paints out again!
I would love to frame that painting. I absolutely love the marks you make on paper. Thanks for sharing.
It’s therapeutic watching someone paint
I've never painted, but this was fascinating to watch. The picture looked great
Fantastic! Thanks James.
That's fantastic artwork!
goddamn thats awesome. its like every road in ohio. ive never been there but looking at it gives me a sense of nostalgia. i could get lost in a pic like that makin up stories for the people in the houses, etc.
Your chroma of the painting is correct and so natural....I could feel the weather in that place....through your painting
amazing vid, thanks. Always wanted to see how the actual level of detail is achieved
Really terrific, once again!
Beautiful! Very informative and peaceful video. Will try something like this soon.

💗 Thanks, I'll be checking out your other videos too! 🌹 💜
Love your videos!
Very nice! Congratulations!
WOW! I always spend a lot of time on the pencil phase but I rarely get it to overlap so perfectly with a photo of the reality like this one. That's incredible! I guess I need to keep drawing/painting for a few more decades :-) Can you please remind us how long that took? 3 hours? I have to say, your gouache videos have gotten me seriously into gouache and it is my favourite these days: I love how it feels under the brush when you apply it (unlike acrylic) and the mat finish is beautiful.
Thanks! The drawing took about 40 minutes, and the painting about two hours more. So I guess it was about 3 hours.
Omg excellent tutorial video. Thanks for sharing
His eye for detail is photographic!
Beautiful.
Hi from France James, I follow you and your awesome art. I am drawing teacher and have a blog on drawing. One day, I would like to draw and paint with you. Thank you for sharing, you inspire me :)

Love those mousetrap springs at the end!
Awesome tips sir.. very pratical and direct to the point. New fan here 😁😁😁
Thanks and welcome aboard.
Awesome!
Hi, James! I really love your work. I'm still a beginner but I hope I can be like you someday. Could please create a video explaining the basic techniques of gouache? Thank you so much.
Nyrryl, Thanks! Please check out my blog, which has over 100 archived posts about gouache: gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/search/label/Gouache
Your picture is very good ~♡
Amazing 🤩
Very interesting. I did a little "sleuthing" via google map & actually found the spot where this was painted. Gurney seemed to have "CONDENSED' the view. The House/Bldg Focal points are closer in painting than the actual (Its Cambridge NY going out of town past Washington St)
I’ve been very inspired by art you make and the depth you put in them, have any tips on making depth and dimension in paint? And also I’ve been struggling to get light or lighting onto objects like houses or trees and it frustrates me sometimes but I do get through of what I’m painting and sometimes I like what I create afterwards.
Very nice sir
You are so gifted. I learned a lot from this video. Liked and subscribed. To the 3 people who thumbed down, I just gave you the raspberries. Lol
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 RESPECT MASTER!
GOD BLESS YOU!
I’ll never be as good as you but hot damn I love these vids
