Paint First, Then Draw - Quirky Gouache Technique
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 май 2023
- James Gurney reverses the normal procedure in this plein-air painting of a dairy barn. Instead of painting over a careful preliminary drawing, he starts loose with a brush, and later changes his mind about the color of the barn. He draws on top of dry gouache with fountain pen, pencil, gel pen, and chalk.

Every time I open RUclips and see a new James Gurney Video I feel a rush of excitement that I have with no other creator. This man is probably one of the greatest contemporary artists and yet he is just so casually doing his thing on here like everyone else. This channel is the best thing I ever stumbled across on this platform, and I really mean that!
I absolutely agree😃
You nailed the comment, sir. Many of us think the same way
I couldn't agree more.
In my opinion some golden sun rays will make the painting look better, you can put it on the barn and the fence , windows.
Agreed. My mind was blown when I first discovered his work in college. He’s helped me understand color theory like no other
It always amazes me how everything looks so rough when you're putting down the strokes, but then when it's all done, the whole composition looks perfect!
it's astonishing isn't it?! How Gurney and others are able to do that amazes me. I know I'd get lost in the painting process 😅
He worked on Frank Frazeta/Ralph Bakshi's 'Fire And Ice' animation
very early on in his career.
Quick block ins, picking out relevant details.
And later, for his books,
doing small color comps
before tackling detailed large paintings.
Teaches ones to say more with fewer strokes quickly,
shapes and values first.
Don't be afraid of that first step.
First the whole, then the parts.
Learn to see that way.
I was about to comment something similar. When he starts it looks so messy that I think: “ok, ok… this I can do”. Then, BOOOM: amazing! 😂
Watching James Gurney paint always makes me want to break out my paints, no matter where I'm at
you had a real 'chatty kathy' there! you are always so kind to people! was so glad to see this video today, its been awhile!!! I learned a few things, as usual! thank you
Chatty Kathy has a very deep voice. More like a Garrolous George.
@@tthomas184 oh that's just good ol' _Talking Tommy_ and he is always ready for a good talk. Especially if it involves "A.I."
@@tthomas184 wait a minute but your username is "tthomas" 🤔 hmmmm.. is this a coincidence?
I love when you capture snippets of conversations with passerby!
I always felt a bit guilty when I used a pen or sharpie in a painting. Like I was cheating, but seeing you mix it up just broke down that, self imposed, mental barrier. 😊 Thank you!
I love listening to the passerby who stopped to chat with you. Also during those moments, I appreciated watching you paint in real time, without time lapse, and fewer cuts. Great video, great painting!
The ability to paint like that is just magical.
No, it's practice. The result is magical though ;)
Never thought to use the palette knife with gouache! Cool trick!
I spend too much time drawing in detail before painting, watching James I jist need a rpugh outline then block, the detail comes later... It's all in the detail!! Thanks james.
Straight edge for the win! When chatty onlookers invariably say, "I can't draw a straight line," I like to hold up my little plexiglass ruler and reply, "Me, neither!" 📏🤷♀🎨
I love that gouache accepts other mediums so well, especially your use of pastels to achieve that glow. Great idea.
My mind transcends into the experience with you, James, as I anticipate your next move or decision to interpret what you see. As much as I’m deep in thought, the guy engaging you in conversation is a big distraction. I think you were very kind and tactful about “coming over later.” Anyway, great work! Makes my day.
james you are a poet with a palette...you inspire always, you find and show beauty always... thank you, keep painting and keep posting!!!!! love all you do
Splendid. I enjoyed your video not only very much but tremendously. Thank you
James, I just love your content and your presentation style. Not only very educational, but soothing to watch!
I'm so excited to have found out about gouache! I loved painting in oils, but recently became interested in watercolor. Gouache is like oil paint and watercolor paint had a baby! I love it!!
Sir Gurney...You are my favourite painter ever..😅😅 Lots of love from India❤
I usually never comment on videos but I had to say that I love your videos ..they have always been an inspiration to me and has helped me in my own journey as a hobby artist...I hope u never stop posting videos
Thank you, Anish. That''s so nice of you and i wish you well on your art journey.
Good to see the improvisations.
The sharp lines and corners you accomplish with the flat brushes is very similar to hand painted letters for billboards! Awesome James; thank you sir for another inspiring video!
this is honestly my comfort channel :DD keep it up
When I see a new James Gurney video, I upvote first, then watch.
I live just a bit away from Billings Farms. It’s a beautiful spot. They do a lot of interesting things for local schools and such. Your painting captured the homestead feeling perfectly!
That's it! I'm going to get myself a white gel pen 😊 awesome simple tool for highlights
Your brush strokes are amazing the way you capture the light and shadows. I am always amazed at your work thank you for sharing this !😊
We agree, the ability to reactivate and intermix layers is one of the very best things about gouache! Funny that art students having their 1st gouache experience often say that same property is the most frustrating thing about it. We loved seeing casein in action- we think that medium is way overdue for a resurgence in popularity!
Can color pencil work on top of casein? I don't think it is a good texture for blending
@@trrlii913 Casein can have a somewhat resistant surface when dry, but we think a softer colored pencil could yield good results, especially if the paper tooth is not completely covered by the paint
@@Blick_Art thank you!!
@@Blick_Art I opened a tube of Casein a few weeks ago and it was so watery. Is that normal?
@@suel4269 We referred to shelf life guidelines from a manufacturer of casein artist's colors, which indicated that separation of the emulsion from pigment can occur in storage, and they suggested squeezing the capped tube to re-combine the ingredients. Some pigments may be more prone to separation than others. Hope this helps!
I always learn something watching your videos. Thx for the knowledge James Gurney.
I love these background conversations with the locals. I especially love it when older people say things like “I’m not 100% sure”, “don’t quote me on that” as opposed to younger folks that tend to be a bit of ‘know it all’ s.
Awesome barn
what a master of the medium
"Belted Galloways" is the breed he was thinking of, I believe.
Best thing about your videos is...the drama you create with background and colour values make them do all the magic
I love the keyhole view...!
I'm from Mass and we have camped in Vermont for 40 years. We have visited many farms including the Billings farm. Great picture and we must have missed the migrating chickens too. 😆
Thank you for your kindness and encouragement with each video. The best at its best!

Great tips on drawing details on buildings, thanks James! I use oil paint quite a bit and I will experiment with sharpened polychromos pencils or something. Great work and tips!
GL to any of you that can get anything to write on top of Gouache for more than 5 seconds before the paint beneath re activates and cloggs your nib.
Or any pen for that matter. And serious GL with the Sakura Gelly Roll pens.
Wonderful demo!
Thus is a fantastic channel
love to watch and learn!
will watch this after work!
Often I wonder 'why would you want to paint that?' Then you do. It's your vision that makes it bc I love all the paintings!!
Thanks for all the vids. I was searching for a new one the other day. So I rewatched the blue coke glass in the diner. Love that one especially. Its so icy & refreshing.😂
Welp! That gentleman was certainly chatty! Now I know exactly what an ox is! Love watching your painting come alive and plentyof good technique tips.
Man you could paint with a number ten pine top and make it beautiful
Absolutely gorgeous art. Watching it made in real-time is like magic! I can't wrap my head around your talent and it's such a joy to experience. Thank you for sharing
Beautifully done!
Wonderful. Nice subject matter and excellent painting of it. Love how the fences came out.
I LOVE your paintings! Bravo! (I also enjoy painting first, drawing later!)
Great as always high light of my week when you upload a new video thanks for sharing buddy 😊
Absolutely gorgeous. Adore the colors you chose for the figures inside the barn---so effective in conveying the shadow. Beautiful! Just subscribed
This is awesome! Thank you
Thanks for all your videos, really really really enjoy them so much, you are amazing at what you do.
I know you get that a lot, but you are one of the most talented people I have seen here on RUclips.
Your my inspiration man
Ohh wow that’s great gouache painting, especially with the split rail fence & shadows. I have been struggling to figure out the perspective for a fence at that angle & was having a hard time with getting it right✍️. But after seeing this video & how you are doing it, it makes sense to me. Definitely a lot of other great ideas & lessons learned from this wonderful informational video. Thanks for sharing this with us.❤💕
Awesome video…thank you, sir
Beautiful interpretation
I feel like a kid again for all the best reasons. :)
Great video as always.
So cool to see you at the Portrait conference. Still unreal I actually got to see one of your sketchbooks in person.
great video!
I am amazed by how you use mixed media. I have used gouache for years and am now learning new ways to apply it from this video. Thanks you.
Very nice
So good
We learned something about James Gurney- that he is a patient man. if that man were talking to me, the whole time I was trying to paint, I might not be so patient.
I think though that James got a little carried away on the details here. I could do without the lines on the barn, for example.
It'd be interesting to use pencil cross hatching for the building but shadows be painted!
Love to watch you paint and hear you talk about painting and what you are painting. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you paint large(ER) than sketchbook size. In this one, then smaller brushes figure in too. Just wondering why you do small so much. Of course your camera work, closeup video, makes it all seem larger. I am just learning about the crossover of goauche with water color. I am still new at it, finding the need to drift back to watercolor. I’d never do oil. Thanks for putting out so much stuff. Always entertaining and enlightening!
This guy is legend
Oh but how can you work/paint and talk/listen to someone who has no clue that art IS WORK?! 🤦🏻♀️ I’m new to gouache painting; happy to see validation in the fun and freedom of loosing myself on the journey. ☀️
Nice
I wonder if the dark colour discourages flies. I read an article on painting the inside of horse run-in sheds and it stated that we should use a flat black as flys don’t like flying into darkness.
My grandfather told me we are related to the original owners of the farm, but unfortunately passed away before he explained how. I'm only over in WNY, so I plan to make the trip some day and check it out. It looks beautiful there. I love all of the animals!
You could have your DNA tested and see how.
Damn you're good.
Guy: "Don't quote me on that"
The 8000 people who've seen this so far:
Did the farmer mentioned the Gurneys as a type of cow?
So awesome. Does yellow paper gives same effect as yellow underpainting?
I love painting I tried my best to be good at painting
As always you never disappoint! One question, when you use gouache, is it always water based? Or do you ever use the acrylic based type of gouache?
Milking barn!! Yeaaa boiii
Are you able to paint this way with regular watercolor paints?
Hi James, just wondering if you ever sell original paintings? Your work is so beautiful and evocative. I couldn’t find any on your website.
Regards, from England. 😊
Thanks, I sold a few flower paintings and nautical paintings last summer, but not usually.
@@JamesGurney will keep an eye out for them. :) thanks
💕💯🎨🎨🎨
Hi James...Just wondering, why Goeache and not acrylic?
why you always prime the backgroud?
ajosfritos estuvo aqui
Who else was getting frustrated with Mr Chatty in the background?! Go away and let me watch in peace 🤣
omg this is exactly the type of technique i realized i wanted to do as for my own painting style and was hesitant at first to try it because I haven't seen anyone do it. Right on time 🩷🩷
На днях вспоминал)думаю куда пропали, когда уже будет новое видео ) спасибо вам за ваше искусство!
