Painting with Two Colors (Plus White)

- James Gurney paints a snow pile using just ultramarine blue and burnt sienna, plus some white gouache. This limited-palette method is a popular painting method.
Arthur Guptill said, "A rich effect can be obtained with only a limited palette. A warm and cool combination affords the student the best approach to his color problems, especially as they relate to outdoor sketching."
E. Barnard Lintott said, "For a young student there cannot be a better way of entering upon the study of water colour than by rigorously banishing all but two colours from his palette. It is the best and surest way to the study of full colour. The colours should be a cold and warm one; cobalt blue and warm sienna-or Prussian blue and burnt sienna-are two combinations which lend themselves to a great variety of treatment."

Also, are we not gonna comment on just how cool James owned that slip at 00:55?
He brushed it off like it was nothing, slipping as gracefully as he paints.
I really like your attitude, "There must something to paint in this parking lot."
I was a little worried when I saw James on top of the snow pile that he might slip and... yeah, that. :)
Ended up with a fancy slide:)
The contrast is so bold against the shadows. You make it look so easy! Keep up the videos. I watch them all! By the way. What's the brush you use. It holds together well
As smooth as his blending ;3 haha
As a tall guy I was like, "get low, dog!
He took it all in stride though. Very smooth!
There should be a cable channel, or nowadays a new streaming service, that focuses just on art, drawing, and painting. An Art TV Channel. And on that channel James Gurney without a doubt would have a prime time show.
James, you are great! Nice to watch your videos, listen to your comments and remarks. They are very useful. Thank you for shaering.
Moscow, Russia.
If I had to choose only two colors to paint with for the rest of my life, it would be burnt sienna and ultramarine. They really are the perfect compliments, and the neutrals they make are so deep and vairred. Thanks for the video!
Im sure youve heard this before, but ill say it again, you are a national treasure, James.
U have very good sense of humor.
Sometimes I feel bad for watching ur videos for free.
Nothing I would click faster on than a James Gurney video
I concur
You are not only an awesome artist but an awesome teacher as well! Thanks for all you do from your Hudson Valley neighbor!👏😊
Wow, thank you!
he is the embodiment of everything i want to be when it comes to approach to art!!
I'm a superrealist oil painter myself.
But I just love watching you work James.
You haven't lost the magic, the awe, the wonder.
The childlike enjoyment is so apparent. Sadly, so many artists lose it along the way.
And if you haven't by now... Chances are you never will.
When you paint for a living, this childlike magic is the first to go.
And yet it's precisely where the magic lies, I've noticed this in myself.
So it's so refreshing to witness the magic once again.
Well, well done Sir
And God bless. ❤
Not an old master, but definitely James is one of the great masters.
I was thinking something very similar. He's amazing!
His videos are timeless. ❤😊 He is a great, and a great teacher.
I like how you don't use fancy terms and just word it simple like "building legos". Your videos are calm and relaxing
something I appreciate from Mr. Gurney is that you can make a good composition from most any subject. sometimes it is difficult to find that perfect setting.
I literally just fell asleep watching this. Not because it's boring. But because his voice is so relaxing and the ASMR of the brushes have a calming effect on my mind. Love his videos.
I really had the audacity to pick up a paintbrush for the first time in months, expecting it to turn out exactly like James Gurney. Needless to say I was humbled quite quickly.
lol, oh my, so true. Yesterday I picked up a Caran D'ache watercolor colored pencil at my local craft store, in ultramarine blue. I had gotten some cheap set of watercolors but didnt' have that color. Best I can manage is little doodles here and there.
@@recoveringsoul755 Doodle away! That's where it all starts. If you Doodle for 15-20 mins per day, before a year passes, someone will have offered you money for your work. And you'll have tremendous satisfaction from the whole process. Good luck to ya!
@@pashaveres4629 well that's very encouraging! Thank you.
@@recoveringsoul755 yes keep on doodling you can only get better remember that
@Beech second that also but doodle while you study aswell hehe
I love the textural quality of the snow bank. The sparkling sun glints. Thanks James.
Me too! Masterfully done. For me, mesmerizing, in fact
Not only the painting is great, but the way you painted the environment while staying outside in the said environment in a calm manner is impressive. Props to you! Keep up the good work.
Ugh. You did it again. You made something as mundane and unsightly as a pile of plowed snow in a parking lot look incredible. You are such a master of light and form. Thank you for sharing your process with us.
Your tutorials are so soothing to watch. Once in a blue moon RUclips will recommend an amazing video that is so informative and enjoyable to watch. I’m so glad I came across your videos! God bless. 💚
Thank you so much 😀 I have to say that RUclips algorithm serves up stuff that I like too.
Thank you so much for your videos. I could sit here all day - love this snow with the shadows and light. Will want to get your book on Color also.
Was starting to get anxious for a new video. The need for Gurney gouache videos is strong. Amazing as always.
You are really showing the joy of painting in practice - to watch you is really interesting
My God, I admire you so much, James
I am sitting here in Florida freezing to death watching him paint that scene. Brrrr!
This is masterclass on managing a limited palette. James is an wizard!
Like the Lego block analogy. It makes sense.
You paint colours and light and they are alive.
This is breathtaking, again and again
Amazing!!! Beautiful!! I may never look at a mountain of dirty snow piled by the side of a store parking lot again. And lord only knows, as of February 1st, we are completely surrounded by them here in New Hampshire! Since they generally don't completely melt until the beginning of April, that gives me two months to practice. You are such an inspiration!
James, I always appreciate your videos. they exude this sense of calm and peace that I'm seeking in this time and I hope I can reach that state of mind myself
Hi James.... every time I watch your videos it just reminds me of how much I still have to learn. Thank you.
Mr. Gurney, thanks for another great tutorial! and i bet your wife thinks your the greatest hubby in the world, because you let her shop till she drops! When my wife and I go shopping, most of the day is done. and im two years older! Anetas husaband! Also, I followed your instructions and painted what you did, Then i through it away because it looked like a second grader did it!
I've learned a lot of color theory with you! I wish my teachers have taught me like that 😃
James, you paint snow piles better than anybody I know! Glad to see you back - we've missed you!
Not only is the picture awesome, but the fact that James is inside a car in direct sunlight hunched over painting this while holding a camera in his other hand. Bravo! Then you mentioned an octopus having multiple brains in each tentacle... You're the octopus, James... You're the octopus!
Just what I needed!! I recently bought two books with water color paper, one about the size of yours and one half that size, set to paint the view from my window on a, hopefully, daily basis. I'm a little scared, but you're an inspiration! I love the idea of limiting the palette. I used to use the entire rainbow, unable to contain myself! It took some doing to learn a little restraint and it made my paintings better. And, btw, the view from my window is the Seine, with it's many moods, colors and textures. I think I will have an interesting and educational year ahead of me! Thank you for the inspiration!
I’m such a big fan of yours. You’re so inspiring. I’ve just ordered all the equipment I’ll need to start painting like you.
Me too ...lol
It’s amazing how you took an ordinary looking scene and made it look awesome!
I've been following you for a few years now and I never get tired. Watching your videos is educational, inspirational and relaxing at the same time. Thanks James!
You and Gouache BLOW MY MIND James!
Another fabulous demonstration of colour control. I've just purchased two wonderful books by you 'Colour and Light' and 'Imaginative Realism'. Totally knocked out by the level of detail and the care with which you explain the processes behind the finished work. "Ars est celare artem" . Thank you for your videos.
Thank you so much!
I am an Oil Painter but admire your style and your Paintings, especially as anyone who has tried gouache or Water colour will know how good you really are!
Polecat, James paints in oil, too, but in his studio.
Thank You for so generously sharing!
Painting in your car, sounds relaxing.
Each brush stoke here has a meaning. Wow.
I find it unbelievable how good that is, and what you achieved it with. Wow.
Wow, Lots of great knowledge. Thank you for sharing this. I can't wait for your next video.
Isn't this an old video? I've seen this before...still great to watch and can't wait for the next colour theory release.
Yes, but first time I've released the full version on RUclips
@@JamesGurney Ah ok, thanks for clearing that up :)
Really great how you make the mundane into something fascinating and beautiful! Very inspiring.
I wish I could find a teacher like you near my home !
another amazing painting... thank you James....
James! Be carefull!! That slip made me gasp!
Rest of us: human mode....................James Gurney: always in Legendary mode....
Didn't expect you to climb that snow pile 😂 Great video as always
You make it look so effortless and simple! Your art never ceases to impress me...
T R A I N !!!!! what a mischievously timed horn :^) Great subject matter too, very intriguing.
The car has just the right amount of detail (or lack of it) not to run off with all the attention. Contrary, there's the large amount of detail in the shadow part of the snow pile.
The camera actually helped us in seeing how monochrome this scene really is. In real life, you tend to add the colors you know these scene elements have.
By using no black (I think?) you automatically get the haze that is created for a large part by the sun on the window.
Thanks, Erik. I probably overdid the detail and sharpness in the shadows. Yes, not using black makes the color choices more conscious.
I really appreciate that you talked through your decisions here. The stripped-down palette uncovers your thought process. Thanks!
I wish i had a teacher like him in high school, my art teacher made us do stupid stuff like collages.
Wow 😮
Great Job dear 👍
So sweet paintng 💙
I’ve just started painting with gouache and your videos are amazing and helpful. Great work and thanks!
Valuable approach, concerning values.
Great video. Educational and entertaining, as always. Thanks for sharing. 😄👍🏻
I don't understand how anyone could give this a thumbs down. There's no actual reasoning for it... What could you hate about this?
That's some fine rim lighting
You are one heck of a teacher! You took a view of the landscape that was not very appealing and not only did you make a lesson out of it, but you actually made the painting interesting and the snow was quite beautifully rendered - in only 2 colors…
I always learn something when I watch your videos, even when they are basic. This is an older video but I’m glad it’s still out there!!
Thank you for your dedication to teaching.
PS: I paint exotic flowers & I prefer to use the CMY palette as the basis for color theory, mixing & finding simultaneous complementary colors. There is a fabulous book out there that explains very scientifically what color is & how our eyes see. It can be a bit hard going at times but I would be interested to hear your gthoughts on this book if you have read it. If you have not, you may find it of interest: ‘Vision, and Art the biology of seeing’ by Margaret Livingstone. The revised and expanded edition has the most recent science in it and I recommend that version.
It actually motivated me & I got very excited to learn about how I could make some magic by using some of this knowledge. It has in it the facts about how we see that is still not commonly known or accepted, and I was not taught any of this in college. It is now a required course in many art schools.
Best regards
SARA
Hi Mr Gurney, in first, hello from France, stay safe in USA, it makes a long time that I follow you, and I'm always astonished of your gouache paintings.... Thanks for your tutorials that I follow since a long time.
Just a happy little snow pile. So rad. AND helpful. Good tip to become efficient with each color.
Such a calming video. The shadows and highlights on the snowbank are perfection! I’m gonna paint with red and green today and see what happens haha
5:30 am here. Was watching snowy plein air videos of yours then this popped up😊
Very incredible James! Love your way of doing things in spite of the limitations of circumstances. Beautiful and thank you!
I lost it when James slipped he said wouah
Love you james
So incredibly beautiful!
Now, that is what you call casting a large shadow over a light subject. 😉
That is awesome artwork!!! 😍 Thumbs up! 👍👍
My God, are you talented! You make the most boring of scenery an interesting work of art❤️
Wow 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎨🎨🎨 pleinair is great..!
Your videos are so calming and very helpful, keep up they great work!
P.s the painting turned out fantastic^^
God the internet is a beautiful thing. Thank you James, just started reading your books yesterday! Much love
I always learn so much watching you, thanks!
you works are so amazing, it's magic. Thank you
Unreal, amazingly well done with so much ease and grace.
Beautifully done James
Beautiful as usual.
I'm glad you're back
Beautiful, so much with so little.Thank you mate for the lesson..🎨👍
Impressive. Most impressive.
Yes sorry about that , there’s probably not a lot of texture there but - didn’t realize at the time but there is 3D printing of paintings . To bad it’s so costly . When I saw your picture blown up behind you , I said to myself maybe on a wall in our house . Perspective very much . Thanks
Mesmerising to watch and fascinating to see what can be achieved with just two, well maybe three - colours plus white.
You’re such a great teacher
Incroyable !!! merci bcp pour toutes vos videos
Another mastering painting. Thank you again.
This is magical!!!
Your eye is amazing... I can't wrap my brain around how you see something and then just recreate it perfectly... You're helping me figure it out though. Your explanation of how you painted the car was mind-blowingly brilliant to me. Thank you :)
I find that observing everything around you all the time helps train your eye and understanding of value- and also lots of practice! But I completely agree, his eye for things is absolutely amazing.
Yes, he's a master! I agree, it comes from lots of observation and practice translating the subject and committing it to paper. I was very impressed as well. Alas, I may never get as good as he is, but hopefully we get better as we go
@@potatooolatke Exactly! The first thing I noticed when I started painting was that I look at everything differently now. Its so calming and insightful. Practice Practice Practice... ❤
Looking forward to colour and practice 🎨
Hugely appreciated. Thank you.
Love your figurative work
I missed your videos james!
Brill James, thank you!
You "ART" the best; thank you too for this video. :-)
