  • James Gurney shows how you can paint a lot of detail with relatively big brushes. The plein-air subject is a snow pile in a parking lot. He then shows an abstract painting exercise with a flat brush that you can try.

It's funny to me that the painting of everyday life in its unclean and raw form can be so refreshing. Everyone's trying to paint the perfect field of flowers or a tranquil river winding at the base of a beautiful mountain (which are all amazing and have their place) but this to me is endlessly more interesting. And something admittedly I didn't think initially I would like. Thank you for videos and changing my perspective.

i did the same thing with oils as a training. I purposely chose just 2, sometimes onl 1 larger brush. It forced me to really care about my brush strokes and overall getting the most from my brushes. Sometimes less is more and I´ve learnt that I don´t need large amount of brushes to finish the painting. Thanks for the video, I love your work. Alot of the artwork I like to do on my spare time is digital, I'm big on 3D modeling and stuff. However I just can't shake the feeling I get taking photos with film, it's more raw, and harder to cover mistakes, and the whole process you really have to think before clicking that shutter button.
I'm very inspired, not only your painting, but your approach to the effects in your videos, just love it! Gives me almost a nostalgic feeling!
