- James Gurney shows how you can paint a lot of detail with relatively big brushes. The plein-air subject is a snow pile in a parking lot. He then shows an abstract painting exercise with a flat brush that you can try.

I really enjoyed the little study at the end. It would be great to see more loose experimentation like that! Super helpful.
Are you German or so you have German ancestors? I just thought "von der Linden" this is 100% German 😂
I'm working now on a video about "Unusual Oil Techniques," and I spend some of the time with loose experimentation to test things out.
@@theoooarts5232 or from the netherlands
I don’t paint but I do enjoy these videos a lot, they help with my anxiety immensely.
winter ride seriously the best calming method.
Hawthorne:
“Paint the ugly, make it beautiful”
Gurney:
“Hold my brush... here comes the parking lot snow pile”
Imagine people passing by in the parking lot. “Da hell this guy doin”
This is always a comment in your videos but it must be said again, you see beauty in unusual scenes! And it shows in the work. I look at the painting and go "ooh I see the beauty now"
Thank you, Diego. I love snow piles because of the way the white snow reflects colors in the shadow, and the fractal quality of the forms.
Your paintings thumbnails always seem so realistic I have to watch the video to see how it came to be
I've never seen a more beautiful snowbank!
I feel so lucky to find your channel as I have never really seen anyone to paint with gouache in a professional level before. Great great transform of the vision and you teach a lot. Thanks for sharing this! Greetings, Robert
I agree.
Yes, I like gouache too. I think it is a very "friendly" medium; it has lots of "range"!
@@ronschlorff7089 I also recommend Lena Rivo on RUclips!
@@katenikii Thanks, I painted in gouache years ago, birds. Seeing this video inspires me to try again, I'm doing landscapes in oil now, which is nice too!
And who would have thought a pile of snow would make good subject matter. Really enjoying your videos, which I’ve never come across before. Fantastic👍
Amazing how a painting turns an everyday mundane scene into something beautiful!
I like how you took a subject that was mundane and frankly, ugly, and made something beautiful from it. Cheers!
It's funny to me that the painting of everyday life in its unclean and raw form can be so refreshing. Everyone's trying to paint the perfect field of flowers or a tranquil river winding at the base of a beautiful mountain (which are all amazing and have their place) but this to me is endlessly more interesting. And something admittedly I didn't think initially I would like. Thank you for videos and changing my perspective.
I grew up calling these piles "snow boogers" and they always felt like an eyesore. You make them look so interesting I want to try this. Also really really liked the exercise demo at the end! Would love to see more of those!
That snow looks real. I thought it was a picture at first glance. Your highlight skills are amazing.
I learned from every minute of this...but that last 5 min on using the big brush for different effect...WOW! That was so much great info!!!!
Sees pile of dirty snow and paints beauty.
Gorgeous work and an unexpected extra lesson there at the end. Thanks :)
James you are amazing, you get a great painting out of the most mundane of subjects.
Thank you you inspire!
The Truth (if it's still necessary!) is that the Artist makes the art not the tool!
...and the truth shall set you free!
Thank you and
have a nice day,James!
This channel has brought me joy and hope to improve my painting and drawing skills because I really love drawing landscapes and not so much people lol
I'm really glad youtube recommended the airplane video.
MASTER OF WATERCOLOR!!!
Fantastic you have inspired me to explore gouache.
Thank you.
i did the same thing with oils as a training. I purposely chose just 2, sometimes onl 1 larger brush. It forced me to really care about my brush strokes and overall getting the most from my brushes. Sometimes less is more and I´ve learnt that I don´t need large amount of brushes to finish the painting. Thanks for the video, I love your work. Sorry if any mistakes, I am not a native english speaker
I live in South Africa and I have never seen snow in my life... I really like your videos and you make me want to do more watercolour
thank you for all your videos....life is good ....feel so good watching your videos. Much better than netflix
We don't make mistakes, we make happy....oops, wrong channel.
or is it ?
I dont get it

You made a drab snowbank beautiful!
James Gurney is a wizard
This is probably my favorite video of yours, just taking a pile of snow on a supermarket parking lot and rendering it with the majesty of the Himalayas
Beautiful. Love how you've captured a portion of winter.
This man looks very kind
Sign of a true artist, turn a bunch of crappy old urban snow into a work of art.
you're a legend, Gurney
Is it just me or does this guy give off the most relaxing vibes lol. I honestly feel so happy watching his vids lol
Your the best. Thanks for sharing! Always a pleasure watching and learning.🖌🎨🖼🧡
Hola James!!me encanta el efecto de la nieve!!muchas gracias por sus videos tan utiles y entretenidos😊
My uncle, who is a painter, say painters always make magic in their work, and you sir are one hell of a magician. I look forward binging your entire channel.
Great warms and cool light 👍
I love you, James Gurney
I love the variety of texture you achieved with washes and dry brushing on the ground. Awesome.
that's what's great about gouache; it can be made to look like a range of other mediums!!
Alot of the artwork I like to do on my spare time is digital, I'm big on 3D modeling and stuff. However I just can't shake the feeling I get taking photos with film, it's more raw, and harder to cover mistakes, and the whole process you really have to think before clicking that shutter button.
I'm very inspired, not only your painting, but your approach to the effects in your videos, just love it! Gives me almost a nostalgic feeling!
Thanks for the quality content!
Solid, achievable instruction with no gaps or tangents. Just awesome.
Your paintings come Alive in Every stroke! What a Talent!
Gorgeous painting. Thank you for that bonus lesson at the end. You packed a lot of useful techniques into a brief demo!
Of course James can make a snow pile in a parking lot look beautiful aha thank you for sharing your videos with us!
You always amaze me. I like your color schemes and brush strokes. I've tried moving my brush in the same manor and not really over think too much. I'm going to look through your videos for something for the beginner... trees.
You make it look so easy.
Great instruction James!
Great/informative video as usual :) I really enjoy how simple brushstrokes makes it look more realistic. We often fiddle with paintings trying to make them look more detailed, when really it's the confident strokes that add much more.
It’s unreal , fantastic!
James is amazing
You really are amazing you bring me joy in times of need, take care james and stay happy.
I love your videos! Thank you for sharing : ) Your rendering of wet surfaces, ice and snow are beautiful.
Really love the longer videos that show more of your process. Can't wait to see the next one.
Great lesson!!! Thank you !!!
I appreciate your videos! Thank you for sharing your accumulated knowledge/ insights.
I can’t wait to implement those painting exercises you showed us. Thank you so much! 💙
Thanks, that's the idea I was trying to get across. Have an extra page in the sketchbook where you can just play and experiment.
Simple and very very good
Very helpful. You gave me an idea on how to paint mountains with the way you painted the snowpile. Only different in scale. Thank you.
I love your paintings of the most mundane scenes that nobody really pays much attention to.
Very nice, I love this painting
I wish I had such talent. I don't think one can learn such.
man what would i give to have a master artist like james letting you travel and paint with them etc for some time.. i discovered watercolor with a tube of white gouache to be pretty enjoyable - definately giving gouache only a try soon~
Seu canal é fantástico! Eu aprecio muito o seu trabalho, grande artista! Parabéns.
I really like the subject. If I could paint like you I would paint things like this. Simple, everyday things
Beautiful piece nd very educational. Thank you

Very useful and interesting, Gouache is fascinating to do in art.
You are my greatest inspiration. Thank you for every video. Greetings from Poland :)
This type of video is very useful! Thanks!
Excellent work
Great lesson! In recent years I've adopted the same philosophy in drawing; I now use chunks of graphite sticks more than pencils. Some I've broken or sawed into to get interesting edges or tips to work with.
Freaking beautiful. STUNNING and i havent even watched it uet
You are sooo amazing! I am really happy to find your channel. Thanks for your videos!:)
Like a surgeon with a brush!
You should do more of those quick tutorials. I do mostly digital art right now with just pencil sketches traditionally. I'm looking into getting into doing traditional paints at some point and it'll be nice to see some exercises like those that I can practice.
Thanks, Will do! Working on a new video now with lots of oil experiments.
@@JamesGurney Looking forward to it!
This was way too interesting! I love how you mix the colors
this is awesome techniques! Thanks a lot for sharing!
I enjoyed the practice techniques of the checker box.
Thank you, James.
Have a thumbs up for another great tutorial! I might consider getting me a set of gouache for painting on my blackwood vacation, instead of the oilcolour. Less painting medium to carry around ^^
Going to check out more of your tips and tricks before I leave
Just amazing
