Paul I can't tell you how glad I am that I found your channel. You're not a RUclipsr who wants to talk about watercolor, you are a true watercolor artist who shares his knowledge. Would you please make a guide on choosing watercolor paints? The videos for paper and brushes saved my life, I was struggling too much until I found your channel Thank you
You amaze me with your versatility. I’ve been hopskipping and jumping all over RUclips watching other artists but you’re the only artist who seems to have a complete series of lessons to benefit beginners. Thank you.
Thank you Paul - as a relative beginner, brush selection can be overwhelming - personally, I need to simplify my brush collection - this video helped a lot
Oh, I'm so happy to know that your brushes are synthetic! Thank you for that! As well as a lot of people from the comments, I'm vegan and do not use any animal products, but I find some synthetic brushes just amazing. I am very happy that manufacturers are making progress and quality synthetic brushes are available. My mother was a painter and at her times there were no other options than real fur brushes. So now, it's so great that we can make an ethical choice, have the same good quality,. and enjoy painting.
You are incredibly talented and have an awesome personality! So thrilled I happened upon your youtube, Painted in the early 70s and now 70 years young and found my passion in retirement!! Enjoy all your explainations, information, funny statements and tutorials. I'm having a grand time practicing techniques you instruct. Thank you, thank you THANK YOU for making these available w/o asking for $ to watch and learn from you, You are my inspiration to continue. JB Venice Beach, Calif.
@@ArtbyPaulClark Thanks for your reply! Watched 3 more videos this morning, makes me excited to paint bursts and cauliflowers today!! You have the best attitude, fun-loving and all about enjoyment of mixing colors, etc.
Paul, as a Vegan I cannot sanction using anything derived from animals at all. I was pleased to hear your view on synthetic brushes and their ability to be as good as. Pro Art - brilliant, and I'm pleased to hear your connected to them and they to you!
As a vegan myself I have found synthetic watercolor brushes work as well as the genuine hair/fur brushes and actually I have more control with synthetics.
The difference between natural hair and synthetic hair is that animal hair tapers to a point. Synthetic hair, bristles for vegans, are a constant diameter. The animal hair brushes are placed individually by hand into a shaped mould with the taper to the point. Getting the synthetic bristles to have the right flex and memory return, while allowing the correct rate of flow to a point that gives a line between 1 mm and 10 mm is a real challenge. They are getting there.
Pro art are terrible. If you want a good synthetic go for Escoda . Synthetic brushes are no more cruelty free than sable but sadly last forever, synthetic will last about 50 paintings tops. Dudes just selling his brushes he’s not being honest.
@@rnee1000 have you ever used one size 12 sable? The hair are shedded twice a year, this is not a true tutorial but it is a advert for dudes brushes. Natural doesn’t mean cruel anymore, animals moult and it’s the shedded hair used and one £40 brush will last a lifetime instead of synthetic hair that makes micro plastic and pollutes our earth. Natural is always best as long as it’s cruelty free.
I recently purchased Paul Clark brushes. I absolutely love them. I didn't realize what a difference a brush could make with my paintings. Thank you Paul.
thank you paul I have some brushes but I want to test yours. Because I think you are a honest teacher! Ihave watched a lot of tutorials and I feel so comfortable with yours Im so glad you are teatching at you tube ❤❤❤ once more Thank you
As a beginner I used, something that speak to me on amazon, two series who seems to make me able to do everything ...., now my three daughters offer me Da Vinci , rotmarder in small sizes and I choose a da vinci cosmotop spin 8, two Escoda, a Perla 14 and an Ultima 10 and a big one "bulbe" Leonard 6 and sure... I buy your famest rigger, mine is in size 4. But what I prefer is to ear you, even is sometimes I don't understand everything, I'm really found of your channel... Take care of you and thank you so much!
Sir, Thanks for your kind reply. I am aged about 66 and a self taught artist. I don't know the anotamy of human beings etc. I stopped painting in the year 1981. Now I am practicing as a Lawyer at Villupuram Town, Tamilnadu, India. Nearly after 3 decades I have started doing painting because of my grand daughter who is showing interest in painting. Your demos are very good for learners and professionals too. I am very much impressed after seeing your videos which are very very useful. I think nobody has illustrated about the technics , brush strokes, color mixing in water color painting as you have done. Thank you sir.
I’m new to watercolor and I usually don’t exceed a4 size paper as I draw on the go, so for me a size 8 (silver brush) is more than enough big. My favorite size is number 4 because I’m still clinging to details and overworking area. Loving your videos and learning how to tame a bigger sized brush!
Well Paul, what can I say....... I have enjoyed painting using, oils, acrylics and charcoal for most of my life but shyed away from using watercolours. Stumbling my way across your videos has been an absolute gamechanger for me. The information you have provided, from the right paper to use, the brushes to give the best effects and watercolour techniques to practice, and all free at that, is second to none and I think I have now watched most of the videos, and have spent many many hours during lockdown experimenting with colours and techniques that I never thought possible and guess what - have now begun to sell some of my work! Just wanted to thank you for giving me the boost I needed to enjoy painting in watercolour and the bravery to be experimental with colour................ thank you so much.
Thank you, just found your channel. I’m a beginner (absolute) in watercolour, just started about 5 months ago. Enjoy the talk and information. Excellent.
Paul, I've just ordered your full set of brushes (heck you probably see my order just come through). I bought your brushes, the full set, as my thank-you and contribution for your many youtube videos. I think if you put out so much free content then it's the very least I can do in return. One day I'll buy the book too, but I'll go through some RUclips tutorials first.
A great tutorial on brushes…thank you. I am a plein air painter. I love using Princeton brushes. I have also used several of Richeson’s Grey Matters rounds. I use one Richeson travel brush, a round (#6) when I paint outside, especially when sketching or doing a thumb nail sketch. Like you, I really use only the same few brushes as I am familiar enough with them that I know how to use them and what they can do.
Paul, I'm new to watercolors, and I arrived here through pen and ink. I use pretty much fountain pens exclusively for my inking. I ran into a gent who uses a semi-waterproof ink to get a nice wash around a line without eradicating it. He uses a water brush or brush pen for his pocket kit. I tried this and found it works fairly well, and I had to try it with actual watercolors. So I got a little Windsor & Newton pocket set and tried a little painting with just the small water brush. To my great surprise, it worked very well. I could mix colors, do washes, clean the brush, by squeezing the handle and pushing water into the bristles. Now the painting isn't fantastic. I used the wrong paper entirely, my Moleskine pocket sketchbook. Buckled everywhere! But I saw enough promise in it to start studying in earnest. And I have 4 sizes of water brush in my kit along with some nice squirrel brushes. I must have clicked the wrong item after that, because I wound up with a set of Windsor & Newton acrylic brushes instead of watercolor brushes, but I might fiddle with acrylics someday, so I just put them aside. The desk easel I got came with some acrylics, so they all went into a box together for another day. I might make do with the squirrel brushes I got for a time, and just add a couple extra, like a mop and maybe that rigger. Or I may try to find that set of sable brushes for watercolors that I _meant_ to click. Or I might check out yours.
Just what I have been looking for. Recently retired and the boss said "I must find a hobby" ! Always enjoyed art and thinks to himself how hard can it be. (Yeah right!) Really like the humour you introduce into your lessons Paul, but above all your no nonsense advice and experience. Thank you. Now lets check out your brushes
I’ve been really pleased with my synthetic Rosemary and Co. brushes. Sharp tips, hold a lot water and spring back to shape. A 1 inch synthetic flat wash from Princeton rounds out my go to brushes.
I'm a huge fan of the Silver Black Velvet brushes and use them most of the time, but for a really good alternative that's not as expensive, I've also found the Jackson Art's Icon range to work beautifully, particularly their Quill range.
I was always confident in doing sketches and avoided watercolour painting because it was my biggest weakness. But now thanks to your channel my watercolour art has improved and i feel more confident now with paints. Thank you, sir.
Thank you Paul, I had asked concerning the brushes you use and suggest to be good brushes. Thank you for this tutorial. I have lots of brushes and was not sure if I could continue to them or if I needed to find out what would be some better choices. I am very excited to finally be informed on your stance of an exceptable Water Color brush to use. I have been similar to the lady with the " cheap brushes ", not really knowing what to use. I value you artistry and your expertise in the field of Water Color Painting. Since I've started following you I have learned much-needed information as to how to continue on this much journey of Water Color Painting. Thank you.
Excellent advice as usual Paul. I have been a traditionalist when it comes to brushes. I was spoilt as a teen, inheriting my grandfathers precious sable brushes that I had forbidden to touch as a child. They were a collection of well used but awesome WN and Diana Kolinski brushes. I remember about the time I was in college, trying the new Dalon brush from Daler Rowney, advertised to be "just like sable" and was not impressed at all. As I've got older, I have become more ethically conscious... and tighter of pocket! I love my Rosemary and Co. No.12 sable mix,(my current go to brush) but in the last few years there has been exciting breakthroughs in synthetic hair fibre. Some can even emulate the "belly" of natural hair, offering the holding capacity and the flow control missing in conventional tapered round synthetics. A few years ago, I would have argued blind that we were still a decade off something that would match the performance of sable but I'm wrong. There are a few real gems out there right now from the likes of Da Vinci and Escoda, they are not cheap by any means but the technology is out there now and will be more widely available as more people choose to avoid animal products.
I like using Japanise bamboo script round writing brushes, they are soft, won't tear up paper, hold lots of pigment and water and do everything you want for watercolor and very pinpoint accurate for detail, you can shape them dry they are awesome and not that expensive. and come in different sizes too.
Thank you for the wonderful detailed information on brushes. It is so confusing for a beginner like me to walk into my local art store and try to buy what I need. You have made it so easy Paul. Thank you. I am headed to your store ( well not literally) on the web to purchase your brushes.
I started out with a set of 9 round brushes for about $22 US dollars (sizes 0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16) before finally get some great quality Princeton Neptune brushes. I really only used the size 10 brush out of the original cheap set. I use the Princeton Neptune # 4. & 12 Round brushes, the 3/4 inch square/flat wash, 1/2 inch cat tongue, & a 3/8 Fibert Grainer. I also have a Winsor & Newton Cotman #3 Round & a rigger brush.
So grateful for your videos, I've been learning so much. Just found you last week so I'm binge watching them. You'll probably get tired of hearing from me but I'm trying to leave my comments as asked.
I so enjoy your videos. It's delightful to click on a video that I know won't just leave me better-informed, but lighter-hearted as well. You and your wife have gentle humor down to an art (pun intended)! Thank you for the time and trouble you take, sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for this great video! I am a huge fan of the Princeton Aqua Elite brushes. My understanding is that the Princeton Neptunes emulate squirrel, while the Aqua Elites emulate Kolinsky sable. My experience is that the Aqua Elite brushes do a great job of keeping a point, hold water well, and are nice and snappy.
I'm American and use the Velvet Silver Touch, but I recently stumbled across Rosemary & Co. and ordered brushes. It's totally worth it, and I have three brushes that are my favorite I use consistently. I'm tempted to buy your brush set because art supplies are awesome! ;)
🤣Nice to know Missus keeps you in line, does she paint also, Paul? My fav brushes are Princeton's, Aqua Elite, Velvet Touch and Snap. I also like Loew-Cornell Ultra Round. My background in painting started with Decorative Folkart painting with acrylics. I always loved the look of watercolour and tried many, many years ago before internet and wonderful online artist's that share their skills & knowledge - I failed miserably as I'm a visual learner but now with the internet and being able to watch the techniques I do much better and enjoy it more. Thank you for your generosity in sharing tutorials and tips and tricks. All of us that follow you really appreciate it and the cheeky British humour.
Thanks for that Gina - always look forward to your comments - Yes, she does paint, and not bad too!!! I'm keeping an eye on her just in case she gets better than me!!! 🤣
Paul, you have inspired me to follow my yearning to paint in watercolour, I absolutely love your videos and I have learnt so much from you. I'm improving all the time and am proud of what I have acheived so far - Thank you so much.
I have *many* brushes and my desk can look creatively chaotic when I’m in the middle of a project. If I put my twelve down to use a smaller brush and my desk somehow hides him, I find myself yelling “where are you, Paul?!” So I guess his name is Paul. 😁 You have dethroned my DaVinci 4
Although I have bought so many brushes over the years and always searching for that magic brush; your tutorial on brushes is so practical and MAGIC! Thanks for all your wonderful tutorials; trying to put them to the test! ❤️
Upon thinking I think I will buy brushes from you, Paul, since your paintings are so beautiful. Also, as a big thank you for basically FREE LESSONS-TUTORIALS. NOT MANY PEOPLE DO SUCH INFORMATIVE AND GREAT THINGS FOR FREE. I THANK YOU FROM MY HEART. I HAVEN’T GONE TO YOUR WEBSITE YET BUT ASSUME YOU SHIP TO US.
I have been very pleased with Trekell and Co. brushes. I use the synthetic Protege line vs. sable and the Onyx line vs. squirrel. So pleased in fact these are now my go to brushes.
Hi Paul my fav brush which i got after buying too many synthetic ones is a size 14 Jacksons kolinsky sable series 920 which i paid i think 35 quid for many years ago. I struggle to find enthusiasm to get the stuff out these days. However i still love the feel of painting watercolours but because none of them are that great they all end up in a paper folder. I have just started to paint scooters in watercolour and this may well ignite some get up and go!.
I am late commenting because, like a few others here, I am binge-watching your videos and in a state of awe. You have such a gift, not only in that you are a brilliant artist, but because you are able to impart the information you want to relay to us in such a relatable and fun manner. You are an awesome teacher. My arsenal of brushes includes some Silver Black Velvet brushes as well as some Princeton Neptune and Aqua Elite, plus a few da Vinci. But, I am now doing a happy dance because I have just ordered a set of your brushes! Adding a song to my dance because, also on its way to me is your Watercolour book which I was (finally) able to find with reasonable shipping rates from Amazon Canada. I am ALL set and so very grateful to have found your channel. Happy days!! 😃🎨❤️
Thanks for this video! My favorite synthetic brush is a #9 Betty Hayways, available only from Chelsea Paper Co. Wow, works like a sable. My other favorite is a #5 DaVinci Maestro round with a fine point. It's a sable brush, and it's marvelous. Love your videos and your humor!

This video has helped me a lot. I didn't know much about watercolor before. I have learned a lot from you. Your videos are very instructive. So I subscribed to you. I never knew you before. Thanks for sharing that and all your brush wisdom is wonderfully amazing ! I"ve learned so very much on your channel, thank you for faithfully sharing. God bless. ~:)
Thanks for the helpful video, Paul. I love the escoda perla brushes, but I recently rediscovered the da vinci casaneo brushes. The soft bristles give a certain lightness to every painting.
I use Escoda and I have one Rahail Quill brush that I use almost exclusively! It's a 3/0 which is similar to the Escoda 10. Mine are all synthetic :) I mostly paint small (8x10) florals, animals, abstract art.
Thanks for the nice overview. Every time I’m in our art supply store I feel like a kid in a candy store (with way too little pocket money) gazing at those brushes. I’ve got a selection of brushes ranging from synthetic to squirrel and kolinsky. I really fell for the Casaneo series by Da Vinci. These synthetic brushes have a great retention and I even prefer some over my squirrel/kolinsky brushes. From round to flat, from riggers to quill brushes; it’s a great animal friendly line.
I'm watching this video to learn the basics of water coloring with my three year old daughter and we both enjoyed your video! Elora thinks you're really cool and funny :)
Thx as usual! And my favored brushes are: -- Escoda Pearl, because they white tora has a lot of spring -- a number 8 round from a no name old set... i still have to find another brush that (regardless to quality and price) has the same belly and spring that i love

Thank you for the wonderful detailed information on brushes. It is so confusing for a beginner like me to walk into my local art store and try to buy what I need. You have made it so easy Paul. Thank you. I am headed to your store ( well not literally) on the web to purchase your brushes.
Glad it was helpful! - and thanks very much for the order!
my favorite brush is a raund pointed 8 PANART.Thank you.u are the best.
Good choice! - cheers for the info Ola!
Nice to hear fellow Brit! You are now m new favourite…just done your skies tutorial…and m now listening to your views on paper and brushes.
I love my Princeton Aqua Elite brushes!
Thanks Zombie - good to know!
Hi Colleen - thanks for sharing
Fabulous information! I always thought your brush was a fancy sable! Now I have brush envy.
So grateful for your videos, I've been learning so much. Just found you last week so I'm binge watching them. You'll probably get tired of hearing from me but I'm trying to leave my comments as asked.
Awesome! Thank you! - not tired at all, very thankful - cheers Vicki
I so enjoy your videos. It's delightful to click on a video that I know won't just leave me better-informed, but lighter-hearted as well. You and your wife have gentle humor down to an art (pun intended)! Thank you for the time and trouble you take, sharing your knowledge.
You are so welcome!
Magnífica su selección pequeña de pinceles. Lo difícil es dominarlos con su excelente maestría y experiencia. Gracias por su tutorial !
Just placed an order yesterday, can’t wait to try them out! Thank you so much for your tutorials🙏 very inspiring 👍😊
Awesome! Thank you! - they are in the mail!
I’m binged watching your videos Paul! I’m so blessed to have found you here! Thanks for this informative video!
Glad you like them and welcome Tin Tin!!
Nice video, I am from India and there is a famous brand in India called Camlin which I use since childhood. Thanks again for this nice video.
So nice of you and thanks for your info!!
I just accidentally ordered your brush set… oh darn. 😂
Thanks for the info Megan
Paul, you are a great teacher. Thanks a lot.
I appreciate that!
I'm American and use the Velvet Silver Touch, but I recently stumbled across Rosemary & Co. and ordered brushes. It's totally worth it, and I have three brushes that are my favorite I use consistently. I'm tempted to buy your brush set because art supplies are awesome! ;)
Thanks for sharing!! - both great brands of brushes!
Wonderful lesson, i think i found my favourite teacher.
Wow, thank you Ania!!!
Agreed!
Paul, you have inspired me to follow my yearning to paint in watercolour, I absolutely love your videos and I have learnt so much from you. I'm improving all the time and am proud of what I have acheived so far - Thank you so much.
That’s great and delighted to help Philip!
I bought your brush set and absolutely love them! I find myself using the round 12 for everything! Really great brushes. Thank you.
Glad you like them Jen! - Yup, that No.12 is simply a must!!!
Thanks for sharing!!
Awesome, thank you! - yes and ship all over the world and other planets!
Thanks, your tutorial was the best I found!!!
I have been very pleased with Trekell and Co. brushes. I use the synthetic Protege line vs. sable and the Onyx line vs. squirrel. So pleased in fact these are now my go to brushes.
Thanks Bill for sharing!
Thank you for the lesson sir.. God Bless you. People like you make this universe peaceful and colorful
So nice of you - thanks
Thank you for the video!!!! I use Silver Brush and Escoda for most of the artwork, and some Plantec and Casan too...I ADORE brushes!
Thanks for sharing!!
thank you so much for your tutorials!!!!!! very grateful and appreciative.
Thanks for watching!
Ha! Me too, the 12 is the brush I use most often. Yes and a small thin flat a mop and a rigger. I do have others though.
Yup - all must have brushes!
I ordered your brushes and am looking forward to using them. Thank you!

Thank you so much 😀
Thank you for sharing, I will be sure to check out your brushes.
You are so welcome! - and thanks Catrina!
Great stuff Kev - thanks for the info!!
Fabulous and informative! Thank you. I’ve ordered your brushes and looking forward to using them.
Awesome! Thank you!
Love all your work! Thank you! 😊
You are so welcome!
Great advice. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful Vanessa!
Great information . Thank you Doll !
You are so welcome as always Beverley!!!!
Thank you for brushes info too - very helpful
Thanks for the lovely comment Didi and useful info - keep in touch!!
Just starting out and need all the help I can get , thanks for the information on brushes very helpful cheers.
No problem 👍
What a most informative video, thank you so much!
My pleasure 👍
Thanks for this video! My favorite synthetic brush is a #9 Betty Hayways, available only from Chelsea Paper Co. Wow, works like a sable. My other favorite is a #5 DaVinci Maestro round with a fine point. It's a sable brush, and it's marvelous. Love your videos and your humor!
So nice of you and thanks for your info Audrey!!
Paul , thank you for your big advice, it's really help me , because I always confuse to choose the right brush .
Thank you SO MUCH for guiding us about watercolor brushes. That was really nice!!!! 🙂👍❤🙂

Gosh Paul, when you showed the art store with thousands of brushes, i thought i died and gone to Heaven!! WOW! All just waiting to be touched and purchased. Thanks for sharing that and all your brush wisdom is wonderfully amazing ! I"ve learned so very much on your channel, thank you for faithfully sharing. God bless. ~:)
Cheers - me too - when in an art shop it can be very dangerous!!!
Great tips! Thankyou
You're so welcome!
Thanks for the helpful video, Paul. I love the escoda perla brushes, but I recently rediscovered the da vinci casaneo brushes. The soft bristles give a certain lightness to every painting.
Thanks for sharing lore!
I do mostly realistic portraits, and my absolutely go-to are the Da Vinci Spin Synthetics. I just love those!
Thanks for the info!
It's great information about brushes, thank you.
You are so welcome! - cheers Gopinathan!
very informative .short and crisp.thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Paul. I have loads of brushes but seem to use the same ones over and over again.
That's good - you don't need loads!!!
I use Escoda and I have one Rahail Quill brush that I use almost exclusively! It's a 3/0 which is similar to the Escoda 10. Mine are all synthetic :) I mostly paint small (8x10) florals, animals, abstract art.
Thanks for sharing Leah!!
So true! - you have a good selection of brushes!!!
Thank you for this clear helpful information.
Glad it was helpful!
I'm watching this video to learn the basics of water coloring with my three year old daughter and we both enjoyed your video! Elora thinks you're really cool and funny :)
That is awesome, thanks ... say hi to Elora for me!
Like the video on brushes, thanks appreciated your informative detailed Paul,.Stay safe
Thanks 👍 much appreciated Philip!
I really enjoy the Dynasty Black gold quills
Great brushes Jenni!
@@ArtbyPaulClark thanks 😊
Thx as usual! And my favored brushes are:
-- Escoda Pearl, because they white tora has a lot of spring
-- a number 8 round from a no name old set... i still have to find another brush that (regardless to quality and price) has the same belly and spring that i love
Thanks for sharing!! useful stuff!!!
I just purchased some Princeton Aqua elite and am really liking them. Glad Princeton was on your list.
Great to hear!
