Your videos aren't just demos, as most of the others, but organic tutorials about specific subjects and this makes them very useful. One thing that i love are the "mini-projects" (like the amphora, in this video) that you put inside to quickly and clearly explain a concept. They allow the viewer to immediately try it, doing something easy and fast, but that still is gratifying for the student... I think this is a very important feature. Having a solid theoric background (not from watercolor, but from other fields) on your today's subject, i could follow it easily and also express a clear judgment, and i must say that you did the best possible "compromise" in-between the time to explain the concept, how to explain it without to be boring but still giving some solid theoric foundation, and how to catch the viewer attention...
Looking forward to the new book, and my suggestion about it is... only electronic version, so there is no danger of printing something expensive, with the bonus of immediate interaction with site-videos-etc

Outstanding! Very good instruction on two critical subjects. I was painting a moose. It didn't look quite right. A little darkening of the background behind the antlers added the contrast needed. First that and now this most excellent video points out again how important the values and contrasts are. Thanks a bushel and a peck.

Oh wow! I didn't realise you had provided downloadable PDFs for these RUclips tutorials! That's incredibly generous.... And a fantastic learning curve.
I've started trying to hand draw the scetches in my drawing book, I figure having a crack everytime I try to draw is better than just outright tracing, because eventually it'll click.
But I often still cheat and trace the pdf from the RUclips artist I'm watching onto my paper and then paint!
These really are fantastic tutorials! I'm going to have a crack at these over the weekend!

Just a word to say that I really like and appreciate your video’s. Once a week I teach art, in the loose and safe setting from our home. I teach drawing, painting and sculpting and it’s funny how people are drawn to watercolor. Well, maybe because I love it so much, too... 🤔😄

Thank you for an easily understood explanation and demonstration to show tonal values and contrast. I actually think I got it! Must tell you that I finally located a shop that has cobalt blue and yellow ochre in stock, so I can complete my palette setup similar to yours. Then I’ll be ready and equipped for anything. Except of course, your brushes and book which are coming by snail mail, which at the moment is about the speed of a snail trying to make its way across a strip of flypaper. Oh well, I’ll just make myself busy mixing colours and practicing on my cheaper paper for now.
Can’t tell you how much your videos mean to a beginner like me, and obviously so many others as well. They are so inspiring and wonderful to watch. So it’ll be a weekend spent practicing throwing paint around with a brush in one hand, and a glass of sherry or wine in the other! Thanks again, Paul. Oh, and don’t forget the music.........Marlene

It's so great to see this concept in watercolor. Though I was trained formally as an oil painter, so many art students work now in acrylic and I try to switch them over to watercolor for their studies, as I feel it's a better prep for later mixing true, transparent colors with oils. I work mainly in watercolor, now myself, and it just goes so well with sketching lessons, to start adding color to drawings for a first experience of painting that allows a student to maintain the depth of the tones they worked out in their drawing. But starting from just the line drawing and adding the tonal layer completely in watercolor solves the issue of having all that pencil on the tonal drawing under the paint. Thanks for reminding me.

Imo waterclolor is the most interresting Art for watching. During the process i often think, oh, "this stroke was wrong", or "this color is to dark". But in the result, i m wrong and surprised, what effect each brush stroke has. For me as a beginner its hard to handle, but practice and repeat will take me further. For the beginning its better to limit the number of colors and focus for tones and values and the wetness of the brush/Paper. Monochrome seems to me as a good start and effect very well, how to see in this Video.
    Thanks for shareing and greetings.

Thank you for that great explanation. I think my paintings have gone a bit better since I had understood how important tonal values are.

Recently found you on you tube and am now making my way through your great videos. I notice you are from my husband's home area of Hastings and Eastbourne. He went to school in Hastings but we now live in Norfolk for the last 27 years. Shame you are so far away would have loved some classes as you explain things so well. I've been painting for about a year all self taught in lock down really. Loving watercolour but also like to use acrylic ink and translation medium for more abstract work. Trying to improve my drawing skills as I really like line and wash work. Thanks for your videos and being kind enough to share your skills. Michelle Mould

Thanks Michelle - lovely comment. Yes very close to Hastings - in the countryside just outside Bexhill!

Great tutorial, yes that paintings with only one colour are very elegant and show that one colour can have so many different tones. Thankbyou, I love the sepia colour
