Soft top to hard top swap in 19 minutes

- When I ordered my Wrangler 4XE, I was really indecisive about what top to go with. I knew I wanted both a hard top and a soft top but was concerned about how difficult it would be to swap the tops out. I almost went with the Sky One Touch but decided I really wanted to be able to take the entire top off at times.
So to show how easy it can be to swap between tops for anyone on the fence about which tops to go with, here is a real time video of me removing the soft top and putting on the hard top in 19 minutes.
This video can also be used as a "how to" if you've never swapped out the tops. Everything is in real time and pretty much shows step by step how to do everything. - Авто/Мото
Simple. No commentary. No music. No BS. You’re a king among men! Somebody give this man his flowers
You are too kind. I often wondered if this was too boring without a little music in the background.
@@Wrangler4XEFans na man, this was perfect. Thanks a ton

THIS VIDEO IS EPIC. unscripted, unrehearsed, all real time. You aren't rushing. EXCELLANT SUPERB. I give you 10 out of 5 stars.

Never thought you’d get that done in 19:00. Very impressive! Thank you for making this video!
Excellent video! Full tutorial on hard and soft top without me needing a manual or instructions! Great job!!!
Thank you for this video! I just picked up a 22 4xe with the hard top but found a heck of a deal on a Mopar soft top, so I picked it up. Now I know how easy it is to go from one to the other. Thank you!!!
I saw you have the wireless CarPlay dongle. I saw the prompt screen. The fact that you showed the 4 screws to completely remove the soft top was awesome. Don’t have the hard top but it was so much easier watching your video than going through the manual to identify the page where the screws are pointed out if at all.
Hey good video to save so I can watch step-by-step what you do. Thanks for making😀.
Thank you! Could not find a video showing this process. Every single video is about putting the soft top down, but I was looking for complete removal to install a hard top.
It took so long to find something like this. Bravo!
Thank you for this video. My Jeep came with a soft top and I am getting a hard top in a swap. This helps tremendously.
Masterful work, beautiful Jeep!
Great video! Thank you!
I love how organized your garage is! I do the same thing. I also love how you put everything in its place like I do and that way you can find it when you need to use it again.
I wish it stayed that way year around. I tend to let it get messy and clean it. But once winter hits, it sort of stays messy.
@@Wrangler4XEFans
Totally understand that. I live in California and I think you live in Canada or something anyway I totally get it if it's cold who would want to clean up the garage. Lol.
@@adelegray8292 I'm in Ohio so we're a little south of Canada but sometimes we like to pretend like it's that cold.
@@Wrangler4XEFans very funny! You sure made me laugh hard.
OK, I can be an idiot with tools and had to get my 17 y.o. handy son to help me. For us, call it under 2 hours of second-guessing ourselves - a brief finger injury, etc. but got it done. Thanks for the video.
Very helpful. Thank you for making this!
Great video, looking to get a Jeep in coming year. Was on fence about what top to go with. After watching your video, I'm leaning towards hardtop at purchase, and buy a softop for warmer months. Thanks again for posting your video
That was my original plan. I just decided to go ahead and add both when I bought.
Soft top is actually warmer in winter.
Thanks for this - effective, efficient and easy
You helped me immensely in removing my wife’s 2021 JL soft top after she bent it in half on our garage. And so your video will also help me install the brand new top.
Dude. That’s so good to hear. Not the garage door part but everything else.
Best video I’ve seen! Awesome job!
Great video, love that garage winch with the bluetooth controller on your phone.
Makes it so I can get it up and down without help. Makes it nice.
Thanks for the video because I took my hard top off during the summer and had the dealership install the soft top, when I ask them how much is it to convert back they told me $500 plus that's when I decided to youtube it. So I will be trying this by myself. (my sweetheart passed away in November 2021 so I have to do things on my own now)
Sorry to hear about your loss. Hope you are doing well. It’s never easy to lose someone close like that.
The hardest part is handling the top with all the hardware. It’s more big and awkward than heavy. Two people can make easy work out of it.
@@Wrangler4XEFans Thank you. Yes it's hard and I'm coping one minute at a time but the holidays was awful. Thanks again!
Awesome! Thanks for posting.
I am about to do this tomorrow with my daughters jeep, after watching this my stress level went from a 10 to a 1. The only difference is I have a hard top storage hoist. Thank you for making this😁 easy to do video...
Going from the soft top to the hard top is easier than the other way around.
I’ve been looking into a hoist via garage ceiling.. Can you share info on your hoist? Thanks much

Thank you for sharing, it saved me alot of time from reading the manuals.

High compliment. Thank you.
Great video! I am up here in MN and thinking of leaving my soft top on all year round. Keeping warm is not an issue as we have already had 10 degrees temp. My only concern is the salt and chemicals they put on the roads getting on the soft top.
Good question.
It’s like a half days work without breaks 😁, nice job bro
well done! now let’s see you do the same installing the soft top!! man, that hard top hoist is sweet! wish I had the headroom in my garage for one 😒

Great video! Followed you step by step instructions! Did it 100% by myself (67 year old grandmother) and I have the hardtop on…first time in 3 years. Can you do a video that shows how you store all the parts I just took off?
This comment made my day.
How do you store your hard top? Do you have a lift?
@@Wrangler4XEFans how do you store both your tops? Does the soft top come with a container or something similar to what Jeep provides for the 4xe doors?
@@officialwife I have the GarageSmart hard top lift. I actually store my soft top on it too, even though it's not made for it.
Nice grass Chris
PS I definitely would've let out an expletive when you knocked the GoPro off your head so kudos to you
got to luv the MyLifter! best accessory so far for my 2dr JL.. Also use it to store the soft top in the winter
I put my soft top on mine too.
@@Wrangler4XEFans I put down small permanent markers on my garage floor for each tire so when I back in and drop the hard top I am spot on target..... might be able to get it down to 18 minutes!!!
@@eddiechi1 Smart idea. I thought about doing the same thing. I can never quite get it in the right spot. I always guide the top with my hands to the right place as I'm lowering it.
Very impressive swap... I think it took me longer to remove my Bestop Sunrider and put on my Freedom Panels! :)
That lift is sick af
I definitely need two more Torx bits for my drivers, I've been doing this all with the Jeep toolkit. It seems no one torques these bolts down to the specs in the manual either. I went out and bought an in/lb torque wrench just for that. Oh well, it was Harbor Freight el cheapo $20.
I’m trying to save up for a Jeep Wrangler and I want this garage lift thing now too 🥲 I live in southern TN so it’s usually warm, which is why I’m thinking of getting a soft top, but I’d like to have a hard top for winter or if I end up living somewhere with rougher weather
I use the hard top for winter and for trips. It’s nice to have the option.
Good job, simple and nice video! We still want to know which hummingbird called you :)
Lawn looks good too 🫡😎
Thank you.
Great Video! I have a JL jeep that came with a soft top. I'm doing the hard top install tomorrow. I'm curious where you got the trim brackets shown in 8:57. Those don't come with the Hard top kit and I'd like to find them!
I bought mine with the dual top so everything was just there already.
Great video I notice how you take good care of your stuff. Just one question Im deciding to go with a hard top the noise level a big difference from soft top to hard top? Bought a 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4 door.
I have another video where I did some sound comparisons between the two tops. My experiment might have been flawed but there wasn't a huge sound level difference.
Thank you!!
I have been looking for those steps for months and was getting ready to wing it. How do you store the software top, just and it up?
I wrap it up in the cover and hang it over my hard top lift.
Straight to the point video - awesome!
Is it possible to have the soft top on at the same time as the hard top? (At least having the soft top folded down)?
That would be nice but there’s no room.
Awesome video. Just bought a 2019 Rubicon that came with a soft top but would definitely like to get hard top at some point. What lift system do you have in your garage for the hard top? Maybe you have already mentioned this but I read through several comments and didn’t find it any where.
It's the GarageSmart hard top lift.
Nice Jeep!
Great video!! Thank you. I still have a few questions. Are the four bolts identical so i can drop them in one pocket? I plan on keeping the ugly black pieces on while I throw a kayak in the back with back seats folded flat. Can 1 person reinstall the assembly with out assistance? The 2 big Cam hinges ( made up name) are my dreads.
I'm able to get the entire soft top off alone but it's not light. I'm no he-man but it's a tad heavy to completely remove. It would be way easier with a friend. My height probably helps too. Not sure how easy it would be if I was shorter. I thought about rigging up a lift for it.
And yes, the 8 bolts are all the same on the hard top.
Outstanding..
Awesome video. Can you provide the link to where you boought the hard top conversion kit?
I bought both tops when I ordered the Jeep.
Great video!! I have a 2 door softop JL and I have been looking and searching on google and RUclips on how to COMPLETELY remove the softop but NOTHING…
Yours is the closest I’ve come. Would you know if the process for my 2 door is the same? Except the hardtop replacement of course??
All the videos I’ve seen are just LOWERING the softop on 2 doors
I don’t think it’s very different. My understanding is that it’s even easier on the two door.
This is so awesome! Great video! Did you order the hard top from a specific website or did the dealership order it for you? I bought a soft top 2 door jeep last year and I'd like to put a rack on it and I prefer the way a rack looks with a hard top.
I got both tops when I bought it.
Thank god this guy is gentle with his shit 😮
I did that for six years with the Jk without electric hoist...now I have the Sky One Touch....much easier ;)
Hi. Great video. What do you use to hang the hardtop? Never seen one operated by the phone.

Thanks for the video! 👍🏻
Do you have any recommendations on what product to use to protect the soft top from UV and to keep it nice looking?
Thanks,
That’s a really good question.
303 Aerospace Protectant.
Thank you
My hardtop just came into Jeep that I ordered and I’m taking my soft top off and switching if with a hardtop for security purposes.
Great video, whats better or cheaper buying the jeep with a soft or hard top to later buy the conversion?
It’s better to order one with a hard top and buy the soft top later. That way, it will have all of the wiring and washer fluid line for the hard top. When you order with just a soft top, those things aren’t included.
Awesome video! I just ordered the oem soft top for my 4xe and I also have the my lifter hoist. Question, when I put the freedom panels in the storage net on the my lifter, it causes the hard top to lean backward when u hoist it up. I have to hoist the hard top back to the floor to readjust the brackets to level it out. I noticed yours stayed level when you took the panels out of the storage net? I’m wondering now if I am doing something wrong with the positioning of my brackets on the hoist? Any recommendations?? Again, thanks for this video!!
Are the cinch straps toward the front? I wonder if you have it in there backwards? I have mine toward the front. I could see it getting off balance if the back straps were in the front so maybe that question doesn't apply. Do you have the whole thing tight so that the foam blocks are on or at least close to the top when it's lifted?
@@Wrangler4XEFans I think I had the straps in the correct orientation but I will def take note when I take it off again in a week or two. The foam blocks were pretty close, I don’t think I had them sitting on the top though. Another thing I will look at when I take it off. It was the only thing I didn’t like about the hoist, so hopefully your suggestions help!

I can't tell you how many times I've said the same thing at the same time.
Hey man wanted to ask what phone mount do you have on the dash been looking for one for my wife and I really liked what you had.
That’s a combination of a BulletPoint arm and a QuadLock motorcycle charging mount.
Are there any parts that you could leave on? Or do you need to remove everything. I thought I heard some folks saying the door surrounds and some other pieces didn't require removal to reinstall the hard top.
The door surrounds are what the doors seal up to. The doors also seal up to the hard top. So the surrounds would get in the way of the hard top.
Thanks much !!@@Wrangler4XEFans
Wow! Great job! Going to buy hardtop soon in the future. If I may ask where did you buy yours?
I ordered both tops when I ordered the Jeep.
When ordering the DUO hardtop/soft top combination, can you get the hardtop color matched or just black? What top do you find yourself using mostly?
I ordered 11/6/20. Those early orders all came color matched hard tops no matter what we ordered. I go back and forth between. Hard top all winter and road trips. Soft top the rest of the time.
Damn dude. Leave some 😻 for the rest of us. I love that hard top pulley. Did you install it yourself?
It’s the Garage Smart hard top lift. And yes, I installed it.
I'm considering a good deal on a used JL 2dr M/T Rubicon, only available as a soft-top. But I'd like to do overlanding for camping, so getting a roof rack and side mount rotopax for fuel. So I'd need a hardtop for this correct?
What additional things would I need to do to make the conversion.
I don’t know a whole lot about racks and roof top stuff.
Great video! Any idea where to purchase those 2 plastic trim pieces that you show around the 9 min mark?

Hey Chris. Couple things. You don’t have to remove those last two brackets and please tell your neighbor to take better care of their grass. How hard can it be? I have the same exact setup including the CRV.

Yah I leave my brackets on. Meh.

Is this the Mopar OEM soft top or a Besttop aftermarket top?
It's the Mopar top but Bestop is the supplier.
Can you pull the One Touch off like that? I think I might regret getting it if not
I've always read that you shouldn't but that doesn't mean it hasn't been done. I don't know what the official answer is on that.
Dealership quoted me 6 hours labor to swap out my soft top for the hard lol.
Did you buy your Jeep with a soft top? Was that including adding the wiring for the rear defrost and rear wiper?
@@Wrangler4XEFans is that a much more complicated process? Sorry this is my first Jeep so it's all new to me. I have a 2023 Wrangler JL Rubicon.
@@jmarxful I'm curious what all they were doing. Did you buy a new hard top? Did you buy the Jeep with just the soft top? if the Jeep was originally built with just the soft top ordered, they don't run the wiring for the defrost and rear wiper. They also don't run the line for the washer fluid. The arm on the steering wheel that you use to turn on the wipers doesn't have the rear wiper lever.
So I was curious if the Jeep needed to have all of that added or if you were just taking it to the dealership to have the top swapped and all of that stuff is already on there.
@@Wrangler4XEFans To be honest, I don't have an answer to that yet. I just got a quote from the dealership for the purchase of hard top and wiring with the cost of installation. But in the quote they stated 6 hours of labor. My Rubicon did only come with the soft top and you are right I don't see any lever for the rear wiper. I am going to the parts department to place the order later today when I do I will check with the service department on what actually needs to be added to make this work. I am all the way out here in Hawaii so the only way to get a hard top is through the dealership.
@@jmarxful My guess is that the time is for doing it the way it needs to be done. So that would take some time.
Did your jeep come with a hard or soft top?
I have a JL that came with a soft top and swap to a hardtop, but now I can't find any harness plugs to plug the hardtop for the rear wiper, and those features that hardtop has.
I would appreciate any information you or anyone can give me. I'm about to buy a body wiring harness which cost over $500 😥
