AWESOME solution, great ingenuity! I used a Home Depot scaffold for my hard top removal and storage, and that worked great, but it was still somewhat clumsy. This is the best solution I've seen. Add wheels to your structure for a final improvement....
Just finished building this! I'm a mechanic (large air compressors) but I'm not a carpenter. This was a pretty easy build. I had to adjust a few measurements due to larger tires and a lift, but it works great! I'm thinking about casters though because my tires are still rubbing when I back up (I said I'm not a carpenter) and I don't want to have to replace a good hard top! Thanks for this video! I'm going to try to tackle the sleeping platform next. I love your videos! Thanks from Myrtle Beach, SC!
Hey T Peel, Thanks for the feedback on the videos. I'm glad you found some helpful. I'd recommend the kitchen chuk box for a future project. It keeps the kitchen gear organized and optimizes the use of space. ruclips.net/video/tyua7OVwTZw/видео.html Cheers.
This is exactly what I needed! I don't change my hard top often because I have a soft top too, but I like it for long trips because it's quieter. I needed a place to store the hard top and a way to get it off by myself. This is perfect! Thank you so much!!
Thank you. I was brainstorming in my head something like this but seeing it in use and built reassured me. I ended up building it with a few modifications. The back legs on the side pieces I made of 4x4 and that allowed me to use carriage bolts and wing nuts to install and remove the back brace for storage and tear down. I also did a diagonal brace on the side legs for added support to structure (my topper is for a truck so it’s heavier than the jeep top. Lastly I got some carpet fabric to wrap the “pegs” mine are full on 2x4 that span across the entire structure. I get in the camper use my back to lift the topper and slide the (2) 2x4 in they rest on top of either side of the legs. Thanks again
What an excellent video and ingenious contraption. I don't have a hard top, but I really would like to see more Jeeps enjoy the feeling of having no roof over your head. This is the way.
Thank you for your build inspiration! I have an open carport, so I will add the casters, as others have mentioned, roll it back, and tarp it when removed. Another addition will be some sort of felting or thin carpeting to the bungee corded stakes to prevent scratching on the side of the hard top as it slides down/up into place. Thank you again!
This is great! I'm going to try this. But maybe with some locking wheels at the bottom. That way I can move stand to the Jeep. And easily move into storage when not needed. Thanks for this!!!!
So glad to state that our Canadians are so talented and intelligent. Let's hope Jeep will watch your invention which they can go back to the drawing board to engineer something practical for the wrangler owners.

What a great video. Thank you so much for an awesome idea. I am going to my local lumberyard tomorrow and picking up what I need to build my own. Keep up the great work.
Hey Jendell Overland, Thanks for the feedback. I was going for simple and inexpensive, but the cost of wood these days is surprising!! lol. If you put a big lift on your Jeep, you may need to adjust the height measure of the legs. Cheers.
One thing I might add to this is lockable wheels under this set up, this way you do not need to back into the lift, but just park your Jeep and roll the top into place. This may be easier for those not good at backing up.
@@JendellOverland Hey Jendell Overland, Absolutely! That would be very helpful. I was trying to keep costs down, and also plan to use it up at the cottage where I don't have any paved areas. Thanks for the feedback. Cheers.
If you add locking wheels (like dolly wheels) to the 4 legs, you can easily roll it back into your garage. I like your idea! Much more secure than those garage ceiling hoist systems.
My plan was to use this at the cottage on the grass, by the shed. Your idea would certainly be a great way to line up the Jeep with the rack if doing it on the driveway, for sure. Thanks for sharing. Cheers
Amazing! Built it last night! easy, simple, affordable and it works! Great job with the design and walk through. -Side note this design is easy to modify for locking casters
I have made a few changes to your design. It was actually similar to one I was working already. I turned the 2x4's to their flat sides and placed lockable rollers on the bottom. I used 1x4's for my slides, and I built a similar back brace but where you used 2x4's secondary braces, I did the same but since my frame is set flat, I built close to yours and covered in 3/4 plywood and extened the edge 3.5 inches to reach the outside of the 2x4. I then used 4 carriage bolts and butterfly nuts to go through the plywood to lock it together on each end, but also able to break it down and store it easier. The casters were cheap at capable of 130lb's per caster and have locks. I did a 2 other braces the same way as my first, a second one for the rear and a single to sit center of the front .I can now roll the lid where every I need it. After putting the cab on the 2x4 cross braces, I did the same carriage bolt trick to lock them in place, plus giving the system a bit more stability since they are bolted down through the supporting 2x4 and the 2x4 and 2x8 top plates.
Love this,,,I watch without sound...so might have been explained...wheels...need wheels not only to move to garage.. but to move it to jeep instead of backing jeep in your top... someone will knock whole thing over.
Awesome. I’m glad you found the video helpful. Yes I showed examples that had casters on them. I did it without, 1) to keep the cost down, and 2) because I was using it on the lawn beside the shed at the cottage, so I wasn’t going to require casters. But likely for most, casters would prove quite helpful. Cheers.
Hey, Thank you so much for this video. My Son and I made this with some slight modifications. We cut the bottom seven inches off added wheels so we could move it. That way I wont have to back into it. I can just roll it in place.
Thanks to this you gave me a better structure. You can use unistruts and use nuts and bolts then wood for parts not to damage rear hardtop. With wheels you can make it more mobile. But my problem is putting roof top tent by myself. Now here is my new idea. Manual hoist in garage to hold roof tent. Build a similar rack with unistruts. When outside installing I can slowly raise tent by using a way for unistruts to slide up 2 feet with gas struts to help lift it above the Jeep roof rack. I should be able to assemble and disassemble the platform mostly with nuts and bolts. Tent weighs 160lbs so it should be strong enough.
I would attach a 2x4 piece on each side of the 2x4 brace you insert last where I put a spinning piece so I could secure the top without having to screw a “lock” on every time. That way I put the 2x4 brace across and just spin the lock down in place. I’d also put some large caster wheels on the bottom so I could roll it wherever I want, make them large so I could roll them on grass.
Thank you for this video, this a great idea. Definitely, I will attempt to build this with wheels and maybe some other modifications that will come up. Cheers !!!!
Exactly what I was thinking. Some solid rubber 8" tires and can role this thing out of the way in the yard. I have a old load hog as well can fix it so i can pull it like a trailer behind my building out of the way.
Very cool. I think I'd like to make it more permanent by using metal. It'll be more work and some changes made to keep things from scratching the jeep and top but there's always materials to cushion the contact points. Really nice idea you had.
Hey J Wat, Thank you. If you go through the trouble, you can also use caster wheels to put it to the Jeep. It’ll be easier than backing it up to the stand.
You are very welcome. I’m pretty happy with how well it works. It was fun to put together and disassembles when you don’t need it. Feel free to share. Cheers
Hey Paul, I appreciate the feedback on the video. The devise works surprisingly well, and it's such a simple design. I planned for it to be used on grass up north, but if you plan to use it on your driveway, you can add castors and just wheel it into place. Have fun. Cheers.
I will be making this but will be using treated lumber so it can just stay together outside out of the way as I live in the country and have plenty of room for it 👍👊

Hey Nordekai, Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you liked the video. Yeah, I wish I'd mentioned in the video about the option of mounting the doors onto the side of the hard top storage shelf. Cheers.
Since the bed is in the way, of the back cross support piece, this system as designed cannot work. Perhaps it will work if the back cross support piece extends across the rear vertical pieces above the level of the bed.
Well I built one with wheels and 4x4s for corner posts. I don't have concrete so mine had to roll on grass. Also had to adjust measurements for the Teraflex roof rack bolts to clear the roll bar. Works better than expected! All during the build i wasn't sure it would turn out, but it did. It is a lift and cradle all in one!
This is a great idea. Just a thought to save a few dollars on lumber, why not use a few wooden pallets as the frame pieces. Yes it would make things heavier but might be a good substitute.
@@craigarsenault6169 Hey Craig, That would be awesome!!!! Thank you! I'll maybe ask others to share theirs and make a future video on Subscribers' Hard Top Storage Shelves. Cheers.
I would add locking casters to move the unit around the jeep instead of trying to center the jeep under it. Also, maybe a instead of screwing the boards to secure the top, use a spring type clamp that could be installed and removed in just a couple seconds without requiring any tools.
Love this. Well done. As a suggestion or help, what if I were to include a roller system between the top of the gantry and the cross beams, do you think if this would work? Plus, not sure where I could resource a roller system? Thanks again, great idea.
Just got finished building this, but I ran into an issue. I have a 2019 2D Sport. All stock and my steaks hit the window then I can lift the top because of the lip of the top to the window. Think I have to shorten the sides by 3”. Do you have a Sahara or Rubicon? I’m thinking that might be my height issue
Interesting. I have a Sahara Unlimited. I bet the tires and suspension components are different from the sport. It does sound like you need to shorten the legs so that the legs hit the side of t he top like in the video. Good luck. Cheers.
My Jeep has a 2in lift and if I wanted to add 2in wheels on the bottom of this, would that even itself out and work? Or would I have to make adjustments to the height of the table
Hey Nancy, That sounds about right. If you build it in the same order I did, you can just measure at that time of the cutting and assembly to make sure. Have fun! Cheers.
I imagine there would be slight variation between the height of the top from the ground, depending on the Jeep tire size, etc. but it wouldn’t take much to measure. Cheers.
Hey ak47ok47, It turned out working surprisingly well. I didn't add wheels, as I will be using it in the yard next to the shed. If I was to use it in the driveway, wheels would make rolling the frame up to the Jeep a lot easier. Have fun. Cheers.
Great idea, thanks for it 🙂 How about putting some wheels with brakes underneath so you can store the top inside the garage 🤔 Would easier to put the top back on too 🙂 Jeep wave from Luxembourg 👋
Hello Pep, So nice to hear from Luxembourg, Thank you for sharing your tip in connecting wheels on the legs of the hard top shelf. It would only be a few more dollars but would definitely help. Thanks to you in Luxembourg!!! Cheers
Nice video. I have 35 inch tires and a 4 inch lift. How do I determine how high to build the frame with this extra height from a stock wrangler? In other words, how tall should the frame be ? Thanks very much.
The top shelf should be at the height of the bottom edge of the hard top. That way, when the peg is spring loaded against the bottom of the hard top, you only have to lift it 1.5”(the height of the peg) for it to deploy. Then you can just rest it down on the pegs. If you need to adjust the height afterwards to suit your situation, either cut to shorten or add to the length of the legs to raise. Does that make sense?
Hey sunseasurf, Yes. It's a great idea, but they would add more to the cost of the project. Your idea is definitely worth it though for the ease of remounting the top. My plan to use it will be up north at the cottage, so it will be stationed on grass where castors wouldn't work too well. Thanks for the input. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV That explains why I didn't see the comment I'd made on the first one you removed. Thought you didn't like my suggestion and eliminated my comment. LOL

i see a problem .bumping into the rack and causing the top to hit the driveway . i think caster wheels would be better so you can push the frame into the correct position instead of driving into place.
Love it! I wonder if this design could be done for removing a roof top tent as well? I'd love some ideas on how to remove a 160 lb RTT by myself. My Jeep with the RTT on it is too tall to fit in my garage.
Hey Neon5162, The one I built doesn’t have wheels to keep the cost down, but adding wheels would certainly eliminate the need to move the Jeep in and out from under it. Cheers.
If you make the sides narrower, you can slide it on if that suits you more. Some people wouldn't want to slide it. Whatever suits you and works! Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV yes then you can lock the wheels into a stand position and then step on it to release and move it around - cheaper than spending $800 on rolling rack.

I met a genius today… thank you.
I’m glad you found the video helpful! Feel free to share with others.😉
I came here looking for ideas. I'm hoping to build a frame on wheels for safely storing top and doors when not on the vehicle.
I hope the video helped.
Cheers.
Excellent, thank you!
You are welcome. Cheers.
Superb video man
Hey Fred,
Right on!
Feel free to share it with others you feel would enjoy it.

What about adding heavy duty coaster wheels to be able to move the stand around for easier storage?
Yes that would work well.
Wonder if you could put heavy duty things and fold that rack up for storage
That’s a great tip! Thanks for sharing. You’re idea makes it even better!!!!!
Cheers
@@CheaperJeeperTV just bought my first wrangler jk yesterday it's a 2012 and I have hard and soft top for it awesome idea for the hard top going to build one soon thanks for the idea
You’re welcome. I’m glad the video was helpful. Have fun. Cheers.
Great idea Dino. Ingenious, Thank you.
Hey Jeff,
Thanks! I’m glad you found it interesting. Cheers.
Dude. This is genius. You could even put mounts on the sides for door removal.
Hey Nordekai,
Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you liked the video.
Yeah, I wish I'd mentioned in the video about the option of mounting the doors onto the side of the hard top storage shelf.
Cheers.
Damn...I am impressed. Thanks for the video!
Hey Warmeds,
I’m glad you like the video. The DIY lift works out quite well.
Cheers
This is crazy 🤣. I'm hoping my setup will be much easier and safe
Cool. Cheers.
Not sure if anyone has asked yet but what changes would this need for a jeep gladiator ? The bed makes it super tough to take off alone.
Since the bed is in the way, of the back cross support piece, this system as designed cannot work.
Perhaps it will work if the back cross support piece extends across the rear vertical pieces above the level of the bed.
Awesome idea, my next diy project
Fantastic. I’m glad you found the video helpful. Let me know how yours turns out. Cheers.
Wow Brilliant! Time to go to hardware store
Hey Ray,
Fantastic. I’m glad you found the video helpful. Let me know how yours turns out. Cheers.
Thank you for sharing. Cheers.
Now i understand what IQ means thank you man!!!
Hey Adrian,
Thanks. I'm glad you found the video helpful.
Cheers.
This is a great idea. Just a thought to save a few dollars on lumber, why not use a few wooden pallets as the frame pieces. Yes it would make things heavier but might be a good substitute.
Craig, That is brilliant. It would make a great video. For now, it’s a great subscriber tip. Thank you! Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV If I get one set up, I’ll shoot ya some pics. Cheers.
Great tips!!! Thanks!
Cheers.
Impressive!
Thanks. I’m really really happy with how well it works. I hope you found it helpful. Cheers.
Nicely done! Thank you for sharing!
Hey bradha562,
You are welcome.

Amazing video ! I love it !
Thanks for the feedback. Cheers.
Love this. Well done. As a suggestion or help, what if I were to include a roller system between the top of the gantry and the cross beams, do you think if this would work? Plus, not sure where I could resource a roller system? Thanks again, great idea.
Hey Craig,
Thanks for the feedback on the video. I’m not clear about your roller system idea unfortunately.
Have fun.
Cheers.
Hey Nancy,
That sounds about right. If you build it in the same order I did, you can just measure at that time of the cutting and assembly to make sure. Have fun! Cheers.
Brilliant system
Thanks. It works really well.
This is great. Good video
Hey Chris,
I’m glad you liked the video. Feel free to share!😆
Cheers
Would this work on a TJ? Would the measurements be the same?
I imagine there would be slight variation between the height of the top from the ground, depending on the Jeep tire size, etc. but it wouldn’t take much to measure. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV I appreciate the info. I’m not much of a handyman but I’m going to give this a shot.
I’m sure it’ll turn out. It works great. Cheers.
Love it! I will build mine soon!
Hey ak47ok47,
It turned out working surprisingly well. I didn't add wheels, as I will be using it in the yard next to the shed. If I was to use it in the driveway, wheels would make rolling the frame up to the Jeep a lot easier. Have fun.
Cheers.
Great idea, thanks for it 🙂 How about putting some wheels with brakes underneath so you can store the top inside the garage 🤔 Would easier to put the top back on too 🙂
Jeep wave from Luxembourg 👋
Hello Pep, So nice to hear from Luxembourg, Thank you for sharing your tip in connecting wheels on the legs of the hard top shelf. It would only be a few more dollars but would definitely help. Thanks to you in Luxembourg!!! Cheers
Thank you so much this is a great idea
Hey Rollabout Ranch, I'm glad you found the information in the video helpful. Cheers.
How long were the 2x4 wood braces?
About a foot.
@@CheaperJeeperTV thanks very much sir!
Would you consider a soft top that’s warmer & quieter than your hardtop and can also go top down in seconds?
Hey Black Jeep Convertible,
That sounds pretty good!! What top is that?
Cheers
Can you do a 3rd row seat bracket for wrangler jlu ?
Hey Tre,
Because of liability concerns, I'm won't likely be doing that. Sorry.
@@CheaperJeeperTV thank you for the reply. 😀
This is perfect. Thanks!!
Hey Edward,
You are very welcome. I'm glad the video was helpful.
Cheers.
Nice video. I have 35 inch tires and a 4 inch lift. How do I determine how high to build the frame with this extra height from a stock wrangler? In other words, how tall should the frame be ? Thanks very much.
Just place the wood up next to it and determine the length you need. If you over estimate, cut a little off. I hope that helped.
Cheers
@@CheaperJeeperTV Where should the top of the wood be in relation to where to top sits while intalled?
In other words where to top meets the jeep frame
The top shelf should be at the height of the bottom edge of the hard top. That way, when the peg is spring loaded against the bottom of the hard top, you only have to lift it 1.5”(the height of the peg) for it to deploy. Then you can just rest it down on the pegs. If you need to adjust the height afterwards to suit your situation, either cut to shorten or add to the length of the legs to raise. Does that make sense?
@@CheaperJeeperTV Perfect sense and thanks!!
This is brilliant!
Hey Stephen,
Thank you. I'm glad you found the video helpful.
Cheers
Very nice bud! Would it be easier if the rack had castor wheels so that there is no need to reverse the Jeep?
Hey sunseasurf,
Yes. It's a great idea, but they would add more to the cost of the project. Your idea is definitely worth it though for the ease of remounting the top.
My plan to use it will be up north at the cottage, so it will be stationed on grass where castors wouldn't work too well. Thanks for the input.
Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV thank you for the reply bud!
great idea

Hey TwoFeatherChannel, Thanks for the feedback on the video. I added an extra tip to the video and switched the original one out. Good eye!. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV That explains why I didn't see the comment I'd made on the first one you removed. Thought you didn't like my suggestion and eliminated my comment. LOL
Yeah. I messaged back on what I was going to do on your original post, but I guess if I delete it afterwards, then you don't see my reply. I have lost a few views, thumbs ups and comments, but I thought it would be better to include the extra tip. Thanks for commenting though. Cheers.

You could probably get some carpet samples and put em at the end of those stake posts so they don’t scratch your top 🤷♂️
Absolutely. Great idea. Thanks. Cheers.
Thanks, I am glad I dont have to burn what few brain cells I have left to figure this one out.
LOL...I hear 'ya!
I'm glad you found the video helpful. The hoist works very well.

I want this in my garage and just back into it..I have a 2 door
Good plan! It works amazingly well.
i see a problem .bumping into the rack and causing the top to hit the driveway . i think caster wheels would be better so you can push the frame into the correct position instead of driving into place.
Hey Henry, Absolutely! That would definitely make it easier for sure. There is a bit added cost, but it certainly would be worth it. Thanks! Cheers.
Well done.
Hey David, Thanks! I was pleased at how well it ended up working out. Cheers.
Love it! I wonder if this design could be done for removing a roof top tent as well? I'd love some ideas on how to remove a 160 lb RTT by myself. My Jeep with the RTT on it is too tall to fit in my garage.
Hey Brian, I’m glad you liked the video. I think the first example shown in the video from the Google search is your best bet. Cheers.
Keeps saying that you have to back up to the shelves while ignoring the wheels on the shelving units
Hey Neon5162, The one I built doesn’t have wheels to keep the cost down, but adding wheels would certainly eliminate the need to move the Jeep in and out from under it. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV ya but what I was saying was you kept showing ones with wheels on them while saying it would be a pain to back up to em
Ah...I see what you mean.
Why do Yu need to lift the top if it's even with the platform couldn't I just slide it !
If you make the sides narrower, you can slide it on if that suits you more. Some people wouldn't want to slide it. Whatever suits you and works! Cheers.
good idea you can install wheels to move it and use clamps to lock it down instead of using scraps and screws…
Hey Donald, Thanks. Great tips! That will have to make it into next week's subscriber tips. Thanks. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV yes then you can lock the wheels into a stand position and then step on it to release and move it around - cheaper than spending $800 on rolling rack.
