Nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll consisted of the detonation of 24 nuclear weapons by the United States between 1946 and 1958 on Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Tests occurred at 7 test sites on the reef itself, on the sea, in the air, and underwater. The test weapons produced a combined yield of 42.2 Mt of TNT in explosive power.

I actually enjoyed, The less is more thing that they did in this movie. But you're absolutely right about the payoff in the third act. In fact, I love the whole monarch series. Creature design in Godzilla King of the monsters is incredible. I love how they made all of the monsters feel like they scientifically could be in this world. Godzilla, for example, is thicker because of buoyancy, and they gave him gills, which would explain him breathing under water. His thicker size makes him a tank. You should also check out Kong Skull Island because it ties into that series. Technically, it takes place before the events of this movie. If you're planning on doing the whole monarch series, watch that movie before you watch Godzilla VS Kong.

The big complaint about this film was that Godzilla wasn't in it enough, but that's easily forgiven given that they make every scene he's in count. His entrance and the uses of his atomic breath are MAJOR crowd-pleasers. And this gets him right by portraying him as akin to a natural disaster. You can't stop him, you just get out of his way and pick up the pieces after he leaves.

When I saw that first atomic breath scene in the cinema, I nearly cried. I've been a Godzilla fan since I was like 8 years old, and when I saw that, I felt like I was a kid again, watching Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, it's so rare to get that pure feeling of awe especially as an adult but that did it for me. Full-body goosebumps in the theatre. But yeah, it's not without it's flaws, largely everyone has had the same observations as you, Cranston was out of the movie far too early, and they cut away from the fights. The hawaii fight I don't mind them skipping, just cutting straight to the devastation of the aftermath is an effective scene, but it's a little cheeky they try to tease you again with the second fight.

I would say I agree with you mostly...and I can def agree most peoples criticism came off very negative. But I think the negativity was amplified by their disappointment, main from removing Bryan Cranston from the movie so early on then breaking the pacing to force the story to accept Aaron T Johnson's character to carry the movie. The constant cut aways from the fights between the monsters. The abandoned subplots. They don't need to make the human element so complex it overwhelms the monsters justification to be involved...but if you do...keep your Bryan Cranston alive...he added very much needed human element/weight with out taking from the mystery of the monsters. I still liked the movie but the criticism are valid as we will see similar mistakes repeated in the following movies.

Personally I think it was the main character. For me at least he wasn't that good. If they had Bryan Cranston as the main character throughout it would have been different I think. His character seemed to have more connection to the events happening and I feel would have been a good companion to Serizawa. The actor playing the son just seemed disinterested.

Absolutely loved the early Japanese movies! This film gave me something I was craving which to be honest was always leaning more towards the technical side. I wanted to see how they recreated Godzilla nowadays since I only have those older films and the mangas as reference. And hey if the film was also entertaining even better. This film is not bad by any means! It has it’s issues and we address some of them. It could’ve been executed better with what they already had which is some excellent actors and a great set up. I don’t think this gets the negativity 1998 gets for example. I’d say it’s a pretty alright entry, the plot is what weighs it down a bit but in terms of visual and sound spectacle it’s a marvel to experience!

It's so interesting because I wanted to love this movie, and tbh for the most part I absolutely DID love this movie, but no question the cutting away from the fights was such a weird call, especially the time with the closing door. I feel like they knew how annoying the were being about it, and it was as if the audience was being toyed with there. Also, Cranston actually said himself that he thought it was a mistake to kill him off so early, that it should have happened later. No kidding, same exact critique. And he's certainly not alone. I felt like "Welll okay, now what? Who's this movie about anymore?" Such great observations. Still, it was SO great to see them absolutely nail the classic Godzilla in a big budget American film. Cannot wait to see you guys check out Godzilla Minus One!

This is just my personal opinion, and some will disagree with me, but I always saw Kong: Skull Island as the first in this series. That film established a history for Monarch, and alluded to Godzilla. No matter where you think it belongs in the time-line, you absolutely must watch Kong: Skull Island next! People complained about this movie teasing Godzilla, but that's why I enjoyed it so much.
That airport scene and everything's quiet, except the chain reaction explosions, screams, then, Bam, a massive foot steps in and deathly silence... Chefs kiss.
The turn from Godzilla with that piano soundtrack, when the large Muto arrives at China town, and he let's out his famous roar, blowing everything away... Chefs kiss.
It was the 2nd movie I didn't like as much. It has its moments, but it didn't hit as hard.

    Yay, the Monsterverse starts!
Just in case y'all are not aware of the entirety of the timeline:
Godzilla (2014) was the first movie in the Monsterverse but timeline wise doesn't come first
That'd be Kong: Skull Island (2017) and partly Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023), a TV show that recently released with 10 episodes
Personally I would recommend, due to the context, if you're interested in the entire Monsterverse to watch it in this order:
    - Godzilla (2014)
    - Kong: Skull Island (2017)
    - Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023) (reason I put this here is because the context you get from Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island directly feeds into this TV show)
    - Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
    - Godzilla vs Kong (2021)
    - Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024? whenever it releases haha)
Obviously, choose however you want to experience it but this'd be my recommendation :) The TV show is actually pretty cool, especially with the context of some characters from Kong: Skull Island and some events that happened in Godzilla (2014)

Timeline wise and chronologically, I think the beginning of Kong: Skull Island that’s first set in 1944 with young Lt. Hank Marlow goes first. Then the 1950s and early 1962 flashback scenes with young Bill Randa, young Lee Shaw, and Keiko Randa from Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Then, the events of Kong: Skull Island in 1973. The 1982 flashback with Shaw after escaping the Axis Mundi. Next, the events with the MUTOs in the 2014 Godzilla film, which at some point Older Shaw was watching the news footage of Godzilla fighting the male MUTO in Honolulu. Then, the current events of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters from 2015 to 2017 in the season finale. Next, the 2019 events of Ghidorah’s apocalyptic mass awakening in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Finally, the events of Godzilla vs. Kong.

Edwards had previously directed the movie, "Monsters" and in many ways the two are similar - including seeing the aftermath rather than the spectacle. If you really like the 2014 Godzilla you should check out two TV series that takes place in the month of birth as well. They're not essential but they are Cannon to the monster verse. The apple plus TV series monarch legacy of monsters takes place a year after the events of the first Godzilla movie while also giving better contacts to the world of monsters and the monarch organization that monitors them. Then after you watch the Kong skull Island movie there is a Netflix animated series that takes place 20 years after that movie and yes i it's Cannon to the most of us just not essential.

I am so glad you two enjoyed this. In my mind it's very underrated and the only one of this series of movies I actually enjoy -- the worldbuilding in the remaining films is just too goofy for me. But then, I liked the very same things that most people complained about. I loved only getting glimpses of Godzilla until the last quarter of the film. I loved pulling away from the main fight and bringing things down to a human scale in the last act. For one, the we needed to see what the human characters were up to, and for another, seeing the monsters bashing away in the background served to emphasize how titanic they truly were and how devastating the results were. Going back and forth like that was so much more interesting to me than just a monster cage match.
I really want to see Minus One now.
By the bye, the wonderful spooky choral music during the drop sequence was the same music used in 2001 (Gyorgy Ligeti's Requiem). Have you done a reaction for that yet? Highly recommended!

Portraying Godzilla as a protagonist who, at the very least, doesn't have any issues with mankind, if not protecting them, is a much more appealing concept in comparison to Roland Emmerich's one from 1998. I'm glad you didn't miss this representation of the iconic character and ready to go further.

This was probably the most hyped I've ever been in a theater, as an adult. Paired with the bass (not overwhelming like in some movies) and sound design, the sheer scale was palpable.
24:10 Followed by this moment. Just massive.
Although I was initially upset that they didn't show us the ensuing fight, in hindsight I think it was a good decision - so the last fight would have even more "weight" to it. The ramp-teaser later made me laugh in theaters, and still does, as if the director is deliberately screwing with us
Compared to sequels, this one stands out as an actual thriller with a tangible scale and empathetic threats. Even the Muto design, a complete fiction, was sooooo good. Possibly my favorite scene in the whole movie was the train sequence with the Muto. The cinematography, high contrast, and sound design..

  • @smiddlehurst1
    @smiddlehurst1 Год назад +7

Got to say I think this is the *perfect* introduction of Godzilla to a wider western audience and, in many ways, very similar to the original Godzilla film. Titans are portrayed, for the most part, as a natural disaster and shown from a very human-level perspective. There's nothing you can do to stop them, your only hope is to be elsewhere. Couple that with stunning creature and sound design and you end up with something unique, interesting and (thankfully) very profitable! Those after monster on monster action weren't really enough (at least a decade ago) to make a franchise with this sort of budget sustainable so you need to grow that audience first. Helps that they really make the most of the Big G's screen time with a fair few downright iconic moments here and every action scene having real weight and power to everything that happens.
Oh and as for the 1996 film.... yeah, I'm with Final Wars on this one (for those that haven't seen it, check out Godzilla vs Zilla, Final Wars on this very site). A decent beast from 20,000 fathoms remake, yes. A Godzilla film? No. Wouldn't have blamed the 2014 crew for putting a 'So Japan... we're, uh, we're good now, yeah? We can keep making these?' card at the end of the credits.
