Fun fact: For the opening it was originally planned to have a member of Kong’s species to show up that looked almost exactly like the Peter Jackson version before being shot. Then when it died, the real 100+ foot tall Kong would show up but the higher ups at Universal told the director he couldn’t do that.
*Fun Fact:* The reason why Lt. Packard (Samuel L. Jackson) shot Mother Longlegs (the bamboo spider) so many times even after it was beaten wasn't to avoid any offspring, it was to showcase his already intense hatred for every creature here on the island thanks to his encounter with Kong, despite him and his troups being the intruder in this scenario. It highlights humans can fit the idea of a monster just as much as these creatures (if not even more).
Another example of this which i think fits in with your comment, is a quote from Dr. Wu in Jurassic World; "To a canary, a cat is a monster. Were just used to being the cat"
It's nature. It's time modern society grows up and realizes that nature is war. It is brutal, an endless fight for survival. Who the intruder happens to be is irrelevant. All that matters is who wins. Humans are no worse than any other species.

That line John Goodman's character says about needing a military escort hits different now after watching Monarch. He already lost his wife and best friend. He knows better than the soldiers accusing him later about what they're risking. The fact he still does it, it's no wonder his son doesn't trust Kurt Russel later. It also creates a more in depth reflection on John's motivation. His recruitment scene with Tom shows his obsession has made him into a man on a mission. He's got nearly nothing else left to lose and he's still pushing. Downright persuasive. It's proof of the Titans that will keep their dream alive, but that dream(according to him) KILLED his family. Imagine still pushing to find and explore a world of monsters because your psychosis demands you find the truth at all costs, even when your psyche is breaking down over the very lives they took from you.
It really does. I was putting off watching Monarch, Legacy of Monsters becuase I really like the new Godzilla universe and didn't want to be disappointed. When I started watching it got hooked and enjoyed the series
It also gives you a tragic realization that he kept searching for answers, because he needed to know what happened to Lee. When Keiko died, he could accept it, he was okay, he at least had answers that monsters killed her. But Lee just disappeared and no one was allowing him to find answers. He went to Skull Island for Lee. He died risking everything to search for answers for Lee.
That post credit scene is why I enjoyed watching the entirety of King Kong Skull Island and Godzilla, just watching their back stories and realizing they'll be fighting each other just kept amping me up!!!
11:45 OHHHH YEAH. I used to live in mid-central Florida and would stand out in the field watching towering thunderclouds pile up miles away over the Gulf of Mexico. It was amazing. And when the rain came, it was torrential. One of my favorite memories is the time a passing shower stopped overhead and had a distinct _border_ rather than tapering off. For about three minutes, you could step between "drenched" and "bone dry." Freakin' _Bugs Bunny_ weather.
The writers of this movie actually listened to the criticisms of Godzilla 2014, and just addressed them immediately. Instead of waiting till halfway thru to show the monster, they reveal him right away. Instead of keeping the fights at night in the rain, they put them right out in broad daylight. Instead of cutting away, they stay with the fight all the way thru. Not to mention just crafting a visual masterpiece. I like what you said, "This movie didn't have to go this hard." Exactly. Can't wait for you two to see the next few movies, 'cause they just get crazier from here. Enjoy! :)
Funfact! the actor that played chapman did the motion capture for KONG! and He's the actor that played/did the motion capture for KOBA in the planet of the apes movies!
At the End you said you wanted the backstory of John C Reilly’s stranded pilot character… in 1968 Hell in the Pacific was released starring The greatest Tough guy of Cinema Lee Marvin as a WWII soldier stranded on an uninhabited island with only his enemy played by the legendary Toshira Mifune. There’s barely any dialogue due to the language barrier but I think you’d like it.
@@vladislavivanov2334 that would be interesting. It’s directed by John Boorman who also Directed classics like Point Blank, Deliverance, Zardoz and Excalibur
The Monsterverse Godzilla is described as "a force of nature." Kong, on the other hand, is described as John McClain from Die Hard. And I can see it. And if you like the cast here, they dial it up to "Eleven" in the next movie.
@@OfficialMediaKnights As an aficionado of venerable old movies (and if I may be so bold as to speak in the place of a LOT of my fellows) then please, _please_ permit me to recommend that you react first to the original *King Kong* from 1933. Following which, you then react to its sequel, *Son of Kong,* which was rushed through production and came out the same year. Why go to these lengths, you ask? First of all, and most importantly, the first movie is still a whole lot of fun for being ninety years old; it was really and truly the *Star Wars* of its time in its impact on the viewing public. Second of all, almost no other significant reactors have dared to tackle the first movie, and it bloody well _deserves_ a major reacting-to. Third of all, although the sequel wasn't given a budget that could let it measure up to the original, it's still very important to see for its contribution to the tale of Carl Denham's character. And, fourth and last of all, having seen the two earlier works will help you - ten times over - to fully appreciate what Maestro Jackson brought to his remake. And you'll wish, just as I have, that he would have gone on to remake *Son of Kong* as well, because it could have been (and pardon the Anglo-Saxon) *BLOODY FUGGING AWESOME!!!* 😎
@OfficialMediaKnights After you get through Godzilla King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs Kong PLEASE do Peter Jackson’s King Kong from 2005. It’s a standalone remake of the original 1930s King Kong and an absolute stunningly beautiful tribute to Kong(maybe the extended edition which is great if Denise has seen the theatrical edition). Can’t recommend it enough
@@OfficialMediaKnights With the greatest possible respect to my fellow poster, I submit that it would be much better for your audience's edification, as well as your own, to undertake to heed my advice and see the original and its sequel before Mr. Jackson's admittedly magnificent remake. To repeat and stress my points, they're astounding in their own right, they really do deserve it, and they'll greatly enhance your appreciation of the more recent film. I *beseech* you, take this recommendation seriously. 🥺
I went to the theatres twice to see the Peter Jackson version. The second time was to see if I hated it as much as I thought, or if I was maybe just in the wrong headspace. But that second time I left half halfway through. Now the 1933 version I've happily watch over and over.

Be sure to watch every movie all the way through the end credits. They all have hints, clues etc hidden away in them. These movies are so well done and enjoyable!
The fight scenes were epic and cinematic.... just what I wanted from this movie. The added creepy crawlies made it even more fun. All hail King Ghidorah!!

Love this movie! My parents and I saw this in the theater and we loved it! This was the first and only Monsterverse film to be nominated for Best Visual Effects.
The "it sounds like a bird but it's an ANT" thing is probably a reference to the 1954 film "THEM!"- which features American scientists encountering gigantic radioactive ants. One of the Wests' early takes on the kaiju mythos.
You guys are hands down without a doubt my new favorite way to re-watch movies that I love! Watching the experience of these movies through your eyes is an absolute joy and a movie all in itself. You're absolutely at the top of the list of content creators who I would give a million dollars to if I won the powerball! Keep it up!!
49:40 I love how we all made Kratos jokes at this scene and then as the Monsterverse went on Kong just got more and more Kratos-y. Now he's got an axe and a beard and his own little mini Kong to call Boy 😂
I love how you can tell that some of the shots in this movie are basically straight out of a comic book - Kong being lit by the sun behind him as the coptors fly towards him, Packard's and Kong's standoff with the fire billowing after Kong slams the coptor down on the ground, etc.
I love how Kong rips out that one Skullcrawler's guts, much to the disgust of the human visitors. Side note: It's hilarious to hear Samuel L. Jackson say "Bitch, please!!" 😁😂😭
I found you guys on accident just a few days ago and I have to tell you, I'm so happy I did. I watch a pretty decent handful of reaction channels but you guys have such amazing synergy and energy on camera. Your thoughts and interests in movies are so methodical and on point. I started with the Logan/Deadpool journey and since then I've fallen into the rabbit hole. I'm so hyped for you guys to continue through your Monsterverse journey! 🤩
I think the biggest lesson they took from Godzilla and applied to this movie is to put the monster a little more front and centre and on screen more. In my opinion they pulled it off brilliantly. Not that the 'obscured partially shown' monster approach doesn't work but I really appreciate how in the Monsterverse movies they've managed to pull them out of the shadows. Often the monsters in movies are a part of the environment in which the human story is set (Godzilla took this approach to some degree). This movie puts the Monster more central to the plot and out in the open and I love it.
Yes Kong is by far the best story/characters in the Monsterverse movies so far. Unless Legendary buys or pays Universal a fee, Kong will never be referred to as " King Kong ". Universal owns the rights to the name KING KONG. Godzilla: King Of The Monsters is my favorite by far in the Monsterverse. If the villians motivations are unclear to you pay extra attention to the closing credits . They give you a lot of info as to the after effects of KOTM. Also, your excitement for seeing a certain monster in KOTM will not disappoint!
"KING KONG AIN'T GOT SH*T ON ME!!!!" - Alonzo Harris, Training Day My response- Well if that's the case, Alonzo, take a trip to Skull Island and tell him yourself.🤣
"No man comes home from war" is the best line in this movie. Three generations of my family served...and fought. My grandfather fought in WWII, my dad in Vietnam and I fought in the Iraqi war. My father and grandfather had bigger wars to fight after they came home though. We didn't fight giant apes or skullcrawlers but is was still a world of sh*t.
One thing I've appreciated about the way legendary has curated its current monster verse is that it has paid respect to the themes that Touhou was trying to get across with the original Godzilla. In Western Nations it tends to be man over nature we are in control. In the end we beat the monster with human ingenuity. The way they treat Godzilla in the Eastern Nations like Japan is more or less Godzilla is a balancing mechanism of nature. I hope you all continue on with the monster verse. I'm enjoying your reactions quite a bit.
As a fellow King Kong fan, I think you will appreciate how vulnerable they have always made him to gunfire where Godzilla is impervious to almost anything We finally get to see Kong strong and not vulnerable to guns
Ooh, King of the Monsters is next and it's my favorite! The director of Kong: Skull Island is a big nerd, there are a couple of video game related things I noticed and probably more, like Skull Island has a mountain that looks like the mountain from Journey, the military has patches that look like the tri-force from Zelda, the planeboat is named after Gray Fox from Metal Gear Solid, Kong fights with the ship rotors like in God of War etc. Jordan Vogt-Roberts has been in the helm of a Metal Gear Solid movie for a while, but it's stuck in development hell sadly,. Last time I heard they hired Oscar Isaac to play Solid Snake.
Yes, they did tease Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra. Kong: Skull Island was a very pleasant surprise. I was unsure about them going further back in time, but it was so well done. Creature design was absurdly good in this as were the fight scenes. So many shots were gorgeous. And the reveal at the end blew my mind too. Ghidorah is my favorite antagonist for Godzilla as I saw him early on when I was a kid. Just wait until you see King of the Monsters and then what you get with Kong vs. Godzilla. The lore gets so much deeper.
i love how this film was shot between the color patterns and the action sequences. it's just a well made action adventure film. what i love more about this film compared to the other monsterverse films is that you can actually see the action go down, whether it's with kong or the other creatures on skull island, i can fully see what's happening. the godzilla film (2014) frustrated me so much b/c every time i wanted to see the action happen, it would cut right away or it was just too dark to see anything or it spent too much time showing from the human povs. imagine watching this in an actual theater on a wide screen and you're still having issues seeing what was happening. that alone made me want a refund after watching that film. to me, this is the best film in the monsterverse and i'm bias b/c kong is my favorite. gorillas are 1 of my favorite animals so naturally i have an attachment. i love the theme of nature vs man in this film. yet, ppl still never learn their lesson regardless of what's happening.
Agreed on being able to see what's going on! I'll actually delve into this topic a little more during our King of the Monsters reaction discussion. Where I talk about how you can tell they implemented a lot of the notes the fans had given them after 2014.
John Goodman’s character Bill Randa’s story in this film has one hell of a huge recontextualization once you watch the show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. A younger Bill Randa appears in that show in one of the main storylines and you realize why he pushes so hard for this mission and for Monarch’s survival. It’s immensely tragic.
Lifelong monster movie fan here. Godzilla is my favorite. I've only had 2 nightmares about a monster. It was King Kong. It was night, in the downtown area, nobody around but me. I could hear Kong down the street, I knew he was mad and I knew he was after me. It sounds silly but it was terrifying. Great reactions, you two. ❤
Big lessons to learn here (unfortunately mankind gets a D minus in learning). The portrayal of the natives and their ingenious existence was absolutely brilliant. Can't wait for more adventures.
The reason the Skullcrawler knocked the guy away is cause in the wild, when a prey animal shows no fear of a predator, it usually means they’re poisonous. So while the Big One didn’t know what explosives are, it definitely knew this guy could probably hurt her if she ate him
one of my favorite in theater audience moment, when the dude trying to self sacrifice got tail smacked like 15 people actually cracked up and one dude audibly yelled "HOLY SHIT", super unexpected with a movie like this
I previously commented that the rest of the monsterverse movies took a nosedive (mainly with the human aspect) but I forgot this movie and this one is just so fun.
I think there's a reason for it. We just finished watching all of them in preparation for the trailer tomorrow. And I have to say it looks like a reaction to all the criticisms 2014 got. The rest have human elements but it's clearly focused on the monsters. It's monsters first and humans to give exposition later. Yes it's a bit of a downgrade and that's what happens if you listen to your fans too closely. That being said the action and visuals moving forward are through the roof and worthy of a watch. If all you wanna see is Godzilla or Kong absolutely tearing sh*t up then you'll have fun with it.
@@OfficialMediaKnights You’re correct. I thought the visuals for King of the Monsters were spectacular. The birth of Rodan is incredible. But the humans were not great. First time I wasn’t into a Vera Farminga performance.
I love how you guys talked about the MUTOs like the bamboo legged-spider adapting to its surroundings to hunt its prey but I also think about the log-like MUTO and the bison MUTO and it can also be said that they adapt to their surroundings as a way to hide from the skullcrawlers as well. Most of these MUTOs are really just co-existing with each other and only react to potential threats (even the MUTOs in Godzilla 2014; they didnt get hostile to humans until they got in the way of their mating! i'm a romantic... sue me hehee) and probably not a threat to each other except for the skullcrawlers who are more predators than anything else. The nuance in this film is INCREDIBLE!
One of the bests Kong movies for sure, another one you should have a look at is the Peter Jackson one...not part of this Monarch line, but still one of the bests Kong movies too.
I enjoy you two soo much... why? Because you two tell us the behind the scenes of movie making... I have learned so much from you... and your chemistry is perfect... thank you both! Keep up the great work!
I just binged your Loki Season 2 reaction like an hour ago. Loved it. And now we get to see more Tom Hiddleston reaction! This might sound corny but you both help me get me through my day. Thank you.

It's what inspired us to do this in the first place. Hearing you say that we can provide you with some comfort truly warms our hearts. Thank you ❤️
Another King Kong remake to watch is the 1976 version, which stars Jeff Bridges. In this, Kong is roughly 170-180 feet tall. Besides the next two films, there are an animated Skull Island series and a live action series featuring Monarch
Begrudgingly, yes. The 1976 ''King Kong'' is significant. But a horrible movie. Its dialogue doesn't hold up, and it's annoying how two-dimensional the characters are.
Your reactions are delightful, but your commentary was really insightful. Looking at it from the perspective of film makers, you help me appreciate elements of this movie I hadn't considered before. If you react to the next film in the Monsterverse series, King of the Monsters, it's loaded with familiar elements and Easter eggs for long-time Godzilla fans.
53:38 if you want a great story, of two enemy pilots getting over their differences after they shot each other down, then try "Enemy Mine" from 1985....
This is one of my favorite movies. As a little boy in the late 70's/early 80's, I grew up with both Kong and Godzilla. They were an amazing part of my childhood. This is one of four movies that Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson have been in together. One thing I loved that was done with Brie Larson's character, Mason Weaver, was the camera she used. That was not a prop camera but a real camera with real film. Brie Larson was actually taking pictures and developing the pictures herself. I thought that was pretty cool. I also have a painting I bought online of the scene where Mason is up close to Kong and touching his face. As a Veteran, I love the end with Marlowe returning home to his wife and son. That was beautiful. Looking forward to your reactions to the other films set in the Monsterverse.
For someone who loves King Kong and I used to hate watching him get a obliterated by bullets and all those different movies. It’s so nice to see him basically immune.
Holy crap! I forgot how good this movie was!! I was so hyped when they showed the cave drawing in the post credit scene. Ari looked like he was about to have an aneurysm when Ghidorah showed up and when they showed the cave drawing of Godzilla and Ghidorah fighting. I absolutely LOVE the way this movie not only up King of the Monsters but also Godzilla VS Kong. Fun bit of trivia: When John C Reilly's character talks about the ants and you hear the "bird" call, that was actually a tease to the old movie, Them. In that movie, whenever you hear that trilling sound, it tells you that giant ants were close by. Lastly, if you want a movie that the beginning of this movie kind of lifted from, I recommend Enemy Mine. Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr. play enemies that get stranded together and have to learn to work together.
That might be the BEST face you have ever made on this channel when they showed the cave painting 😛. Glad you guys loved this one - this movie is SO good and perfectly executed. BTW the facial mo cap for Kong was done by actor Toby Kebbell, who played Chapman in the film. SO stoked for you guys to see King of the Monsters. My favorite in the series. 🤘
I just had to say thank y'all for reminding how amazing this movie is! I recently found this channel and have blasted through dozens of your reviews already haha wonderful content! :D I'm a die hard Godzilla fan as well and after the 2014 release, it truly was a breath of fresh air when Kong came through in 2017. So many things to like about the start of the monster-verse, but I think a huge majority can agree this brighter and more monster focused direction was absolutely the better choice. This film flippin rocks!

With the cutest little daughter too!
Agreed watching this again after watching monarch give this movie even more depth

Jackson’s character here represents an obsession with war, and in the end that obsession led to so many pointless deaths.

Hey the 2005 King Kong film is AMAZING. It’s worth getting around to someday. It’s a great remake of the original and an improvement on it.
Watched the original and really enjoyed it so I'm definitely excited to see Peter Jackson's work!
Toby Kebbell is a great actor! Been keeping an eye out for his work ever since we watched "The Servant"

I see what you did there!
I got to see Peter Jackson's King Kong in the theater in 2005 when I was 6. It's still the best King Kong movie ever made in my opinion.
Denise has been telling me to watch this! A lot of people are saying to them that is the best iteration of King Kong. Can't wait to check it out!
@@OfficialMediaKnights
As an aficionado of venerable old movies (and if I may be so bold as to speak in the place of a LOT of my fellows) then please, _please_ permit me to recommend that you react first to the original *King Kong* from 1933.
@@OfficialMediaKnights
With the greatest possible respect to my fellow poster, I submit that it would be much better for your audience's edification, as well as your own, to undertake to heed my advice and see the original and its sequel before Mr.

Tony Kebell, who portrayed Chapman, also did the motion capture for Kong.
He was also Dr. Doom in the recent Fantastic Four movie (2015).
He was also great as Durotan in the Warcraft movie.

That whole end credit scene reaction definitively deserves a like 👍🏽
I love how the creatures of Skull Island are all a combination of fauna and plant life (With the exception of Kong and the Skull Crawlers)

HOLY COW THE OLD GUY IS THE VOICE OF SULLY IN MONSTERS INC. I knew I recognized his voice

"KING KONG AIN'T GOT SH*T ON ME!!!!"
- Alonzo Harris, Training Day
My response- Well if that's the case, Alonzo, take a trip to Skull Island and tell him yourself.🤣
As a fellow King Kong fan, I think you will appreciate how vulnerable they have always made him to gunfire where Godzilla is impervious to almost anything
We finally get to see Kong strong and not vulnerable to guns
Kong is reasonably young I suppose at this point. But he is such a beast, yet protects the small vulnerable ppl. Interesting dynamic.
The tree through the helicopter was the best bit.
My favorite monstervers movie great cast fantastic action and the post credit scene, teasing king of the monsters gave me goosebumps
The reason the Skullcrawler knocked the guy away is cause in the wild, when a prey animal shows no fear of a predator, it usually means they’re poisonous. So while the Big One didn’t know what explosives are, it definitely knew this guy could probably hurt her if she ate him
one of my favorite in theater audience moment, when the dude trying to self sacrifice got tail smacked like 15 people actually cracked up and one dude audibly yelled "HOLY SHIT", super unexpected with a movie like this
You can tell exactly in the movie when Sam Jackson's character goes crazy. This was so amazing in the theater

43:10 roaring and backing into the fog triggered some nostalgia for me. I loved that little moment.
The Monarch legacy of monsters has the younger version of Bill Randa John Goodman in it because it jumps around in the timeline
King Kong tried to give the skull creeper the people's elbow against the mountain lol
Original King Kong changed movies forever
Your reactions are delightful, but your commentary was really insightful. Looking at it from the perspective of film makers, you help me appreciate elements of this movie I hadn't considered before.
If you react to the next film in the Monsterverse series, King of the Monsters, it's loaded with familiar elements and Easter eggs for long-time Godzilla fans.
I felt like a kid at a theme park with KOTM! Thank you for watching these with us, you guys are awesome!
The fact that Suko is taller than the Kong is Skull Island is crazy!
My favorite Kong Movie since the Jeff Bridges one, thanks
A little off topic, but a great story of enemies becoming friends can be found in a sci fi movie called Enemy Mine from 1985.
To be honest...i also wanted the story of him with his Japanese friend...i think that would have been great
Man skull island was a masterpiece of a movie
