As a long-time Spielberg fan, I have to say it's honestly refreshing when instead of trying to make a straight masterpiece, he just makes something that's just pure entertainment. Something that's fun enough for the audience to ignore the plot holes. Not everything a director makes has to be flawless, it's nice to switch it up every now and then.
Exactly!! Giving people just pure joy and fun is also part of filmmaking and sometimes that's what we need - not just the serious 'excellence'. Popcorn flicks rule!
C'mon! Adapting a book always requires some sacrifices. You can read a book at your own pace, therefore authors can take their time with character development, sub stories and details. Theatrical releases have to fit within a "supportable" time span. It doesn't mean it's not a great movie on it's own merit, just ask Tom Bombadil.
I strongly disagree. This is the laziest movie Spielberg has made: just a never-ending cavalcade of "hey, remember this!?" memberberries and nothing more.

The "Lord of the Rings sounding thing" is the Charm of Making from the movie Excalibur. Every frame of this movie is full of deep cut references and easter eggs. I cannot comprehend how they cleared the permissions to access all of this content in one movie. I guess when you're Steven Spielberg, you can get what you want in the cinema world.
And Excalibur is an amazing film by the way - it was my favorite film for quite a while back in the day. It seems like not too many people know about it these days either, even people that do reactions to 80s films. That's just all shades of wrong.

The best film depiction of the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable! An absolutely fantastic film. Incredible cast. Amazing cinematography. Directed by John Boorman. A must watch

The 'Overlook Theater' is based on 'The Senator' theater in Baltimore. Part of 'Twelve Monkeys' was filmed there. And with the exception of the name, it's a faithful reproduction of the exterior.

For those who don't know, the "spell" to activate "The orb of osovux" (or however it might be written), is an enchantment from the movie Excalibur, (Kings Arthur's story). By the end of the movie, the witch Morgana (who used magic to stay young), used that chant to cast a spell against King Arthur, but Merlin tricked her into to using her power beyond a proper limit, which caused her to age very rapidly, (she went from being like 30 to end up looking like 90 in minutes) In the end, she was killed by her own son who didn't recognize her.

that omni directional treadmill, that "exist already", in the movie, was the first of it's kind... they created it to be used in this movie, as a world first, so the reason we have it today, is coz of THIS movie...

There are so many references, His Uncle was playing a a lead character from the game star craft, there was Battle Toads, Ninja Turtles, Marvin the Martian was there, Chun Li and Ryu from street fighter. H’s Truck is the old Monster Truck Big Foot. In the Background of H’s work shop has the RV from Space Balls as well as a Tie Fighter. Not sure if you noticed but I’m sure you did, the main bad guys character/avatar was Superman. Oh the 4 armed creature Artimis used was Goro from Mortal Combat. The device that zeroed everyone is the time controlling device from an 80s movie called “My science project”Anyway every time I rewatch this I always find something new. I really enjoyed this one and am happy that you both enjoyed this one. Keep up the great work.

I highly recommend either reading or listening to the book. To say it has tons of pop culture references would be an understatement, along with going into greater depth with the characters and the overall tone being darker, it's equally as satisfying as the film.

I wondered about that. I thought it was from the D&D cartoon when the kids/group get on the roller coaster at the beginning and the cars travel through that open mouth and that is how they get transported. Such a cool cartoon. Venger always avoiding Tiamat and the character of the Dungeon Master was fun to watch as a kid.

I read the book before the movie was announced. The book was a bit more darker and dealt more with 70-90s pop culture. And after reading, I thought to myself "only Steven Spielberg could make this" there is too many big properties that only he could be trusted with.

The reason the score sounded so much like John Williams is because it was Alan Silvestri. Even MORE apropos is your comment that it sounds like Back to the Future - Silvestri composed the Back to the Future Trilogy. In fact, he's composed most of Robert Zemeckis' films, much like Williams has for Spielberg. Parallels abound... In this case, Spielberg had fast-tracked "The Post," which Williams was already working on. So he couldn't do both films at the same time. Spielberg has a "sound" scope he likes to use for his films, and Silvestri's musical style is very much like Williams'. So Spielberg gave him an early cut of the film, scheduled a full-day orchestra session, and gave Silvestri the freedom to compose whatever he wanted. A few weeks later, Spielberg sat for a session. The first thing Silvestri conducted with the orchestra was a brass anthem for an early scene. Spielberg loved it so much, he jumped up out of his chair, raised his hand and said, "Sold!" Silvestri recorded a half hour of music that day, and most of it is the final score for the film. And that brass anthem? It's the main theme for the film. As soon as he finished, Silvestri began composing the music for Avengers: Infinity War. Pretty awesome.

References! Simon Pegg, who plays Halliday's bff, was in a bbc series called SPACED. Sadly it only had 2 seasons, but was directed by Edgar Wright! It has SO MANY REFERENCES that the dvd has a subtitle option giving you on-screen, every reference as it is being made. It's amazing. One epislde was their inspiration for Shaun of the Dead. It is very very fitting for Simon Pegg yo be in a movie like this.🥰

TONS of references for you to catch, although many are more steeped in 80s pop-culture as that’s when Halliday was growing up. While they are developing the sequel to this movie, I’m curious to see how they address certain things from the second book. Let’s just say there are some unanswered questions that book 2 tackles that you may find intriguing! I know your medium of content is based on film (and now gaming) but I would love to hear what you think of Cline’s book.
The problem is that the sequel changes the ultimate outcome of the first book and makes Wade do things that don't seem like anything he would do after all we've seen. It seems like something Cline only did to appease some contract or expectation from the publishers. He also did another story called Armada that is basically a copy of the last starfighter.
Saw the movie first and loved it. Read the book and was blown away how much better it was. I still love both. It does seem to me that a majority of the people that read the book first did not like the movie...not all..but a majority

Fun Fact: The featuring of The Shining in this film is mostly a personal Easter Egg for Spielberg. When the High Five enter The Shining, they enter into it in the iconic Colorado Room. Spielberg was a good friend of Stanley Kubrick and his family (and both Spielberg and Kubrick had planned to work together on A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) before Kubrick's death). Spielberg was touring the soundstages where The Shining was being filmed, where Spielberg planned to shoot Raiders of the Lost Ark and he met Kubrick on the Overlook sets. And they met for the first time in the Colorado Room set.
Great reaction! Based upon a wonderful book, there was a bidding war for the movie rights. Spielberg did a great job bringing it to the screen. It couldn't have been easy. The book is filled with 70's and 80's pop culture and gaming references, hundreds of them buried in the story. So Spielberg had to pick and choose and make some changes just to fit such a dense collection of references and Easter eggs into a movie while still telling the basic story.
This movie was a pretty good adaptation, but I also strongly recommend listening to the audiobook read by Wil Wheaton. It’s a hell of a great book with thousands of details that never made it to the movie. Most people can get a copy to listen to for free from their local library. I have it permanently on my player that I listen to when I’m doing mindless chores like yardwork.
You need to watch Buckaroo Banzai, the trick to LOVING that movie to pretend that there are 8 or 9 films in that series and you are watching part 6, it is full of "inside jokes" and references to films that don't exist. LOVE LOVE LOVE that movie so much
One of the reasons why having the game designers name was an easter egg was that back in the day game designers no how much time, effort and work they put into the game didn't even get credited in the game. They didn't even get a part of the profits of the game. The game company owned all rights, no matter how much money it made the designer got nothing. So putting his own name in the game as an easter egg was also an act of defiance, a way to sneak his own credit into the game so people know he had a hand in creating it.

One of the easiest easter eggs to miss isn't a "if you blink and you will miss it" shot so much as a "if you don't frame-by-frame it, you will miss it". During the climactic battle at the end, there is a sequence that goes TMNT brothers fighting - kids fighting in the street - soldiers running past across the screen. If you pause at the end of the kids scene and then frame by frame, you will catch a blurry silhouette of what looks like a girl in a skirt holding a scythe. AKA Ruby Rose from RWBY. I was personally a little skeptical if it was her, but when I called my daughter, a bigger fan of the show, into the room, she immediately called out the shadow.
While the movie did not disappoint, the book, which I read first, was truly an homage to my childhood. There was not a page that wasn't filled to the brim with references to all I watched, read, listened to, and played throughout all my early life. Everyone can enjoy it and get some of the references, but to people of a certain age it is a personal love-letter to our youth. I never thought they'd be able to make it into a movie because all the rights to every single character, music, etc .. would have to be licensed. I honestly believe that ONLY Spielberg could have been able to pull it off, as he is likely the only guy with enough clout and reputation to negotiate the licensing deals required to use all these fabulous icons. The story in the book and movie are actually not all that similar except in broad strokes, but because each references the same pool of memories both work extremely well. If you liked the movie, I'd definitely recommend the book, coz it is more of and better than this extravaganza, which is saying a lot.
I absolutely LOVED the book so much. I read it in one night and then passed it around to everyone I knew and half of them passed it around, too. My first watch of this I spent the entire time comparing it to the book and struggled to let it go. On subsequent watches, I got all of that out of my system. Now I can embrace it for what it is and thoroughly enjoy it. Even though it's not a slavish adaptation, what Spielberg did right was to capture the essence of the story and that's why it still works.
In the novel Ready Player One the Mechagodzilla was the Kiryu version and it wasn't the Iron Giant it was Ultraman. They couldn't get the rights to used Ultraman from Tsuburaya Productions so they used the Iron Giant instead. Toho studios the owners of the Godzilla franchise said they could use Mechagodzilla for the film but not the Kiryu version like in the book. Toho told them to make a new Mechagodzilla based on the poster art of the 1993 film Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II.
I love that the weapon used to counter the BFG is the Glaive from Krull. Every game that has a throwing weapon called a "glaive" or "glaive type" owes this to the movie Krull. Thanks to the makers of Krull being unaware that a "glaive" is a pole-arm IRL, and using it as the name for their magical starfish-switchblade-boomerang hero weapon, more people in modern times think of thrown weapons when hearing the term "glaive".

As a big BTTF Fan, I LOVE this movie. The Music is scored and conducted by the great Alan Silvestri, who also scored BTTF, reason why all the leitmotifs from BTTF are so noticeable. Also, Robert Zemeckis gave permission to use all the BTTF's elements to give more life and likeness to the book. The scene where Daito and Parzival have Sorrento at Gunpoint in his office, you can see the eyes of Daito and Parzival with an Orange Glare, a reference to Blade Runner, where the Replicants have the same glare in their eyes. Another very "blink and you'll miss it" moment is the First Challenge Race. You can find all sorts of vehicles like the F1 from Grand Prix Racing, the Batman 67 Batmobile, Christine from Stephen King's novell, The A-Team Van... All of them are in that race. There is a video from New Rockstars that is dedicated to find all the references in this movie and there are more than 300. Is Massive. Thank you so much for this!
I still remember getting the book for free in a loot crate subscription. I read it and fell in love with it. Kinda "forced" my son to read it and he was glad I did. We got so excited when the movie was announced. First time I understood when people say "the book is better than the movie". And i would agree the book is better, but still glad with what Spieldberg managed to do.
This was fun to see in the theater, with Spielberg returning to the genre that made him most successful...and then it was kind of sad how one of those films wasn't the most popular anymore like in the past. The press about this was unfairly dominated by people arguing about the book being better, as if that really matters with a movie, and the references and "Easter Eggs" in the movie.
One of the best things about the references is that not everyone will catch all of them. Some are hidden in just the background visuals, where you won't really notice them on a first watch cursory glance. One example, the Doritos packages are actually the older variants. However, you're too busy noticing the DeLorean's, Tracer, the TMNT etc... So much fun to watch and so many references you see the more times you re-watch.
Search how to get all secret endings in Fnaf 3, and i will tell you players discovered all of them in 24 hours. If easter egg hunters were accurate in this movie, the keys woud’ve been found in 4 days.
My only Idea why nobody did is because The Oasis incentivizes not doing stupid shit by making you lose everything. But also alt accounts exist. So that makes no sense, then there's also the fact there would be cheaters and people who data mine games.
You guys probably should check out The Great Wall. It's an absolutely silly movie with Matt Damon fighting aliens in Ancient China but the action and the creatures and the visuals are fun.
If your into classic sci-fi I would recommend Split Second staring Rugherd Howard and Alistair Duncan, it's a wonderfully cheesy sci-fi action romp with some great one liners.
This is probably my favorite modern movie so far. I am gen x, and the nostalgia in this movie is almost overwhelming. It makes this old man feel like a kid again.

As a long-time Spielberg fan, I have to say it's honestly refreshing when instead of trying to make a straight masterpiece, he just makes something that's just pure entertainment. Something that's fun enough for the audience to ignore the plot holes. Not everything a director makes has to be flawless, it's nice to switch it up every now and then.
Exactly!! Giving people just pure joy and fun is also part of filmmaking and sometimes that's what we need - not just the serious 'excellence'. Popcorn flicks rule!

C'mon! Adapting a book always requires some sacrifices. You can read a book at your own pace, therefore authors can take their time with character development, sub stories and details. Theatrical releases have to fit within a "supportable" time span. It doesn't mean it's not a great movie on it's own merit, just ask Tom Bombadil.

The "Lord of the Rings sounding thing" is the Charm of Making from the movie Excalibur. Every frame of this movie is full of deep cut references and easter eggs. I cannot comprehend how they cleared the permissions to access all of this content in one movie. I guess when you're Steven Spielberg, you can get what you want in the cinema world.
And Excalibur is an amazing film by the way - it was my favorite film for quite a while back in the day. It seems like not too many people know about it these days either, even people that do reactions to 80s films. That's just all shades of wrong.

Fun Fact:The designer (Jared Krichevsky) of the mechagodzilla in this movie also designed the mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs Kong. Also, this mechagodzilla design was heavily inspired by a poster for one of the Japanese Godzilla movies, “Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2.” Jared knows how to design a good mechagodzilla.
If I remember correctly, Spielberg was always a big admirer of Stanley Kubrick. The entire Shining sequence is one big homage.

YESSS! That song is definitely a great indicator of how much fun the movie is!
For those who don't know, the "spell" to activate "The orb of osovux" (or however it might be written), is an enchantment from the movie Excalibur, (Kings Arthur's story).
By the end of the movie, the witch Morgana (who used magic to stay young), used that chant to cast a spell against King Arthur, but Merlin tricked her into to using her power beyond a proper limit, which caused her to age very rapidly, (she went from being like 30 to end up looking like 90 in minutes)
In the end, she was killed by her own son who didn't recognize her.

Media Knights Thank you for the shout out, especially since this is one of my favorite movie and as a genXer this film really holds a place in my heart. There are so many references, His Uncle was playing a a lead character from the game star craft, there was Battle Toads, Ninja Turtles, Marvin the Martian was there, Chun Li and Ryu from street fighter. H’s Truck is the old Monster Truck Big Foot. In the Background of H’s work shop has the RV from Space Balls as well as a Tie Fighter. Not sure if you noticed but I’m sure you did, the main bad guys character/avatar was Superman. Oh the 4 armed creature Artimis used was Goro from Mortal Combat. The device that zeroed everyone is the time controlling device from an 80s movie called “My science project”Anyway every time I rewatch this I always find something new.

I highly recommend either reading or listening to the book. To say it has tons of pop culture references would be an understatement, along with going into greater depth with the characters and the overall tone being darker, it's equally as satisfying as the film.

I wondered about that. I thought it was from the D&D cartoon when the kids/group get on the roller coaster at the beginning and the cars travel through that open mouth and that is how they get transported. Such a cool cartoon. Venger always avoiding Tiamat and the character of the Dungeon Master was fun to watch as a kid.
You absolutely HAVE to add Excalibur to your list of movies to watch. Not only is it an amazing film, it'll include the charm of making, which sounded like Lord of the Rings language to you (actually Gaelic).

I read the book before the movie was announced. The book was a bit more darker and dealt more with 70-90s pop culture. And after reading, I thought to myself "only Steven Spielberg could make this" there is too many big properties that only he could be trusted with.

The reason the score sounded so much like John Williams is because it was Alan Silvestri. Even MORE apropos is your comment that it sounds like Back to the Future - Silvestri composed the Back to the Future Trilogy. In fact, he's composed most of Robert Zemeckis' films, much like Williams has for Spielberg. Parallels abound...
In this case, Spielberg had fast-tracked "The Post," which Williams was already working on. So he couldn't do both films at the same time.
Spielberg has a "sound" scope he likes to use for his films, and Silvestri's musical style is very much like Williams'. So Spielberg gave him an early cut of the film, scheduled a full-day orchestra session, and gave Silvestri the freedom to compose whatever he wanted.
A few weeks later, Spielberg sat for a session. The first thing Silvestri conducted with the orchestra was a brass anthem for an early scene. Spielberg loved it so much, he jumped up out of his chair, raised his hand and said, "Sold!" Silvestri recorded a half hour of music that day, and most of it is the final score for the film.
And that brass anthem? It's the main theme for the film.
As soon as he finished, Silvestri began composing the music for Avengers: Infinity War. Pretty awesome.

@@OfficialMediaKnights The book is pretty different from the movie. The clues are (even) more brainy, and not action-oriented the same way as the movie. As Ernie Cline wrote the script for the movie, the changes had his literal blessings.

References! Simon Pegg, who plays Halliday's bff, was in a bbc series called SPACED. Sadly it only had 2 seasons, but was directed by Edgar Wright!
It has SO MANY REFERENCES that the dvd has a subtitle option giving you on-screen, every reference as it is being made.

A sequel is in development, but Spielberg will not be directing the movie, instead he will serve as executive producer, and Ernest Cline will write the script.

@@OfficialMediaKnights Huge fan of both books by Ernest Cline, and if you enjoyed the movie you will most definitely enjoy the books (especially the first). TONS of references for you to catch, although many are more steeped in 80s pop-culture as that’s when Halliday was growing up. While they are developing the sequel to this movie, I’m curious to see how they address certain things from the second book. Let’s just say there are some unanswered questions that book 2 tackles that you may find intriguing! I know your medium of content is based on film (and now gaming) but I would love to hear what you think of Cline’s book.
The problem is that the sequel changes the ultimate outcome of the first book and makes Wade do things that don't seem like anything he would do after all we've seen. It seems like something Cline only did to appease some contract or expectation from the publishers. He also did another story called Armada that is basically a copy of the last starfighter.
Saw the movie first and loved it. Read the book and was blown away how much better it was. I still love both. It does seem to me that a majority of the people that read the book first did not like the movie...not all..but a majority

Fun Fact: The featuring of The Shining in this film is mostly a personal Easter Egg for Spielberg. When the High Five enter The Shining, they enter into it in the iconic Colorado Room. Spielberg was a good friend of Stanley Kubrick and his family (and both Spielberg and Kubrick had planned to work together on A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) before Kubrick's death). Spielberg was touring the soundstages where The Shining was being filmed, where Spielberg planned to shoot Raiders of the Lost Ark and he met Kubrick on the Overlook sets. And they met for the first time in the Colorado Room set.
In the novel Daito was actually killed IRL by IOI, they pushed him off a balcony while he was in the Oasis
Great reaction! Based upon a wonderful book, there was a bidding war for the movie rights. Spielberg did a great job bringing it to the screen. It couldn't have been easy. The book is filled with 70's and 80's pop culture and gaming references, hundreds of them buried in the story. So Spielberg had to pick and choose and make some changes just to fit such a dense collection of references and Easter eggs into a movie while still telling the basic story.

This movie was a pretty good adaptation, but I also strongly recommend listening to the audiobook read by Wil Wheaton. It’s a hell of a great book with thousands of details that never made it to the movie. Most people can get a copy to listen to for free from their local library. I have it permanently on my player that I listen to when I’m doing mindless chores like yardwork.

You need to watch Buckaroo Banzai, the trick to LOVING that movie to pretend that there are 8 or 9 films in that series and you are watching part 6, it is full of "inside jokes" and references to films that don't exist. LOVE LOVE LOVE that movie so much

One of the reasons why having the game designers name was an easter egg was that back in the day game designers no how much time, effort and work they put into the game didn't even get credited in the game. They didn't even get a part of the profits of the game. The game company owned all rights, no matter how much money it made the designer got nothing. So putting his own name in the game as an easter egg was also an act of defiance, a way to sneak his own credit into the game so people know he had a hand in creating it.
The CG in this movie STILL holds up to this day!!! And this was only 75% CG. And it cost about 155-175 million.

One of the easiest easter eggs to miss isn't a "if you blink and you will miss it" shot so much as a "if you don't frame-by-frame it, you will miss it". During the climactic battle at the end, there is a sequence that goes TMNT brothers fighting - kids fighting in the street - soldiers running past across the screen. While the movie did not disappoint, the book, which I read first, was truly an homage to my childhood. There was not a page that wasn't filled to the brim with references to all I watched, read, listened to, and played throughout all my early life. Everyone can enjoy it and get some of the references, but to people of a certain age it is a personal love-letter to our youth. I never thought they'd be able to make it into a movie because all the rights to every single character, music, etc .. would have to be licensed. I honestly believe that ONLY Spielberg could have been able to pull it off, as he is likely the only guy with enough clout and reputation to negotiate the licensing deals required to use all these fabulous icons. The story in the book and movie are actually not all that similar except in broad strokes, but because each references the same pool of memories both work extremely well. If you liked the movie, I'd definitely recommend the book, coz it is more of and better than this extravaganza, which is saying a lot.

I absolutely LOVED the book so much. I read it in one night and then passed it around to everyone I knew and half of them passed it around, too. My first watch of this I spent the entire time comparing it to the book and struggled to let it go. On subsequent watches, I got all of that out of my system. Now I can embrace it for what it is and thoroughly enjoy it. Even though it's not a slavish adaptation, what Spielberg did right was to capture the essence of the story and that's why it still works.

In the novel Ready Player One the Mechagodzilla was the Kiryu version and it wasn't the Iron Giant it was Ultraman.
They couldn't get the rights to used Ultraman from Tsuburaya Productions so they used the Iron Giant instead.
Toho studios the owners of the Godzilla franchise said they could use Mechagodzilla for the film but not the Kiryu version like in the book. Toho told them to make a new Mechagodzilla based on the poster art of the 1993 film Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II.
I love that the weapon used to counter the BFG is the Glaive from Krull. Every game that has a throwing weapon called a "glaive" or "glaive type" owes this to the movie Krull. Thanks to the makers of Krull being unaware that a "glaive" is a pole-arm IRL, and using it as the name for their magical starfish-switchblade-boomerang hero weapon, more people in modern times think of thrown weapons when hearing the term "glaive".
Also, the thing Artemis threw inside Sorrento's Mecha Godzilla, it's one of the "Madballs".
Quick note guys The spell cast to use the Orb of Osuvox is from the movie Excalibur not The Lord of the Rings. In modern Irish Gaelic, it's "Anáil nathrach, ortha bháis is beatha, do chéal déanaimh," which means, "Serpent's breath, charm of death and life, thy omen of making." Its one of my favorite movies and I highly recommended you watch it you would not regret it . Also as Always great reaction this movie is one of my favs as well I even have a poster in my gaming room for it. I've probably seen it ten times so glad to see you guys enjoy it as much as I have.

I was a teenager in the 80's so this movie was like reliving my youth. So many classic vehicles in the race scene from the A-Team van to the Bat mobile to even Christine.

As a kid who grew up in the 80's, this film is 100000% my entire childhood. I really wish I could have been there with you just pointing out all the cool ass obscure references like the Charm of Making from Excalibur as the activation for the Orb of Osuvox, or that Sorrento's employee ID# is IOI-655321, the same number they gave to Alex in A Clockwork Orange for his prisoner #.

As a big BTTF Fan, I LOVE this movie. The Music is scored and conducted by the great Alan Silvestri, who also scored BTTF, reason why all the leitmotifs from BTTF are so noticeable. Also, Robert Zemeckis gave permission to use all the BTTF's elements to give more life and likeness to the book.
The scene where Daito and Parzival have Sorrento at Gunpoint in his office, you can see the eyes of Daito and Parzival with an Orange Glare, a reference to Blade Runner, where the Replicants have the same glare in their eyes.
Another very "blink and you'll miss it" moment is the First Challenge Race. You can find all sorts of vehicles like the F1 from Grand Prix Racing, the Batman 67 Batmobile, Christine from Stephen King's novell, The A-Team Van... All of them are in that race.
There is a video from New Rockstars that is dedicated to find all the references in this movie and there are more than 300. Is Massive.

I still remember getting the book for free in a loot crate subscription. I read it and fell in love with it. Kinda "forced" my son to read it and he was glad I did. We got so excited when the movie was announced. First time I understood when people say "the book is better than the movie". And i would agree the book is better, but still glad with what Spieldberg managed to do.
Just imagine the lawyers though.

This was fun to see in the theater, with Spielberg returning to the genre that made him most successful...and then it was kind of sad how one of those films wasn't the most popular anymore like in the past.
The press about this was unfairly dominated by people arguing about the book being better, as if that really matters with a movie, and the references and "Easter Eggs" in the movie.
Not sure if you guys are readers, but the book is even better with even more cameos and easter eggs. Awesome movie, and awesome reaction 😊

One of the best things about the references is that not everyone will catch all of them. Some are hidden in just the background visuals, where you won't really notice them on a first watch cursory glance. One example, the Doritos packages are actually the older variants. However, you're too busy noticing the DeLorean's, Tracer, the TMNT etc...
So much fun to watch and so many references you see the more times you re-watch.

You guys probably should check out The Great Wall. It's an absolutely silly movie with Matt Damon fighting aliens in Ancient China but the action and the creatures and the visuals are fun.
If your into classic sci-fi I would recommend Split Second staring Rugherd Howard and Alistair Duncan, it's a wonderfully cheesy sci-fi action romp with some great one liners.
This is probably my favorite modern movie so far. I am gen x, and the nostalgia in this movie is almost overwhelming. It makes this old man feel like a kid again.
Absolutely amazed at your guys' reactions to all the media references in this astounding movie. And who better than the Spielberg himself to make such a masterpiece that not only provides amazing entertainment, but also portrays a clear message to our real world.
Video games are meant for us to escape reality, but always remember what is truly real.
Also, not many people picked up on it, but the Holy Hand Grenade is a reference to a classic comedy movie, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" which is a MAJOR recommendation for you guys to watch.

I really LOVE this movie....its in my top movie list....you have to watch it multiple times to really catch all the easter eggs & references....the fact that this movie came out years ago but still so relevant is amazing....I love all the Steven Spielberg movie references especially 'Jurassic Park'....'The Shining' sequence is next level....love the Avengers like battle....it felt so immersive & showed fans so much pure love
