r/BestofRedditorUpdates - I received a request for child support from a woman I've never met. I am a cis woman and have never had children.
r/TwoHotTakes - Am I the asshole for filing for child support after my child's father bought a house?

Story 1: She should file a complaint with the Bar Association with all the documentation of the case including that they were using stolen employee files and knew it was stolen from the company. The attorney could easily get suspended and it is hard to get back their license after a suspension.
Honestly, if I had gotten a letter in the mail saying this and I know there's no possible way I have a child, I probably would have laughed and thrown it in the trash immediately thinking "Man, these scams are getting weirder by the day."
Ignoring legal documents is a bad idea. If this goes to court and you get defaulted it will be a giant mess that needs to be avoided.
@@youcancallmemauriceI think they are trying to say they would of thought it was fake
@@harperlane3936 Yep, and throwing it away could cause a default judgement against her if it somehow got to court.
@@nehpets216 oh yeah I agree. That is what would of happened but I could see why they would of assumed it was a scam. Cause it’s not everyday a woman is being sued to be the father of a child 😂😂😂😂 that’s wild
@@harperlane3936 100 percent makes no sense because if default dad as a women would be crazy enough and get put on child support would be even crazier and the attorney just probably went with can sue for anything even though no way could win this
Lawyer here! Public defense attorneys are usually only available for criminal cases, which is not always the case for civil/family suits depending on where you live. Also, paralegals are not always lawyers in training since you need to have a paralegal certification (at least in my location). Usually lawyers in training are law clerks or temporary associates.
I worked at a law firm that hired FT paralegals that were going to law school at night (“lawyers in training”). But that was just 1 of many I’ve worked for.
My stepdaughter named her kid Princess!
Hey there, Can you please confirm to our boys here that Chat GPT is definitely NOT the way to do legal research? At least two attorneys in NYC face sanctions and possible disbarment after Chat GPT just wholesale invented to cases to answer their legal queries. They referenced these cases in a brief and NEITHER lawyer (whole ass partners with Westlaw access) verified the case was real and correctly interpreted. Judge was not amused they based an entire brief on cases that did not exist.
Yep haha. I'm in paralegal school and have no intention in being an attorney! Don't want it, won't ever change my mind.
Couldn’t this person get an attorney and counter sue? Especially for attorney fees.. this is absurd! It seems like it would be the easiest case ever to take on… 😂😂
My mother divorced my father when I was just a baby, and I never had a relationship with him. When I was about 20, the state somehow found a bank account belonging to him and seized it for back child support. He had never paid a penny and made himself look like he didn't have anything. Maybe he got lazy and thought enough time passed. My siblings and I were all adults by then. My mom ended up getting around $60k. I imagine that he was pretty damn pissed when that account went bye-bye.
Some stupid parents think once the child is an adult they no longer owe the money or that at the very least the state won't waste money searching for accounts anymore. Stupid deadbeat parents! 😂
I guess that’s karma
Sounds like a shit mother as well. dont only believe one side but clearly you have anyway. A family of winners...clearly.
1st story: same thing happened to me but everything got wrapped up with a simple phone call. It’s WILD that they kept pushing it 💀
Like, how are some attorneys SO THICK
It's literally insane
@@yoyohayliThey get the fees whether it's bogus or not
@@ANNA-fr333 I had a lawyer say they should sue for fraud and include the lawyer since the lawyer was in on it since they should they knew they were wrong
She doesn't need to go to the attorney's office. She doesn't need an attorney. Make them take her to court
I'd file a bar complaint
I worked with a woman who had to pay child support for her grandson. Her kid was under 21, and she was legally responsible until then. He took over once was 21 and then got murdered not long after. She did not have to continue paying the child support.
Grandma is a snipper. Lol
Kinda curious about this. The woman obviously was not the parent of the grandson, so why does she have to be financially responsible for something her son did? Not sure if this was in the US but I thought you’re considered a legal adult once you’re 18. Maybe I don’t understand the legal world and it’s shenanigans
Dude the fact alone that someone can rape a child and then get custody and/or child support is beyond crazy in itself. @@Mielissaleal
@@Mielissaleal Hi sometimes when your child has a history of behavioral or mental health issue they can be "wards" until the age of 21 in the us it has to be under pretty specific circumstances tho (only reason ik this is cause someone I knew growing up was a "ward")
@Mielissaleal This was in Puerto Rico if you want to look into it. It has been a while, so I'm don't remember all the details. You are of age at 18 in PR, just like the US, but I guess there is still some legal stuff that you can't do until 21. I do know that my coworker's son was dodging the mom of the kid and even missed out on a free paternity test.
Fun fact: you can drink alcahol at 18 in PR.
I would sue for identity theft. She stole personnel information, her ex employer needs to be contacted, and she needs to be sued and prosecuted for breaking laws.
Also, keep track of your credit and stuff because if she's desperate, she could use your info to set up accounts.
I don't think it's identity theft, but rather a breach of privacy, which is equally bad but not in the criminal side of law
Thats what i was thinking. Def a form of stalking and harrassment as well as privacy breach.
Sue the lawyer to for fraud and her
She already knew the person she was suing for CS was not the father, so she just opened herself to a criminal harassment charge and a counter suit for money and prizes. Also OP can sue the old company for not keeping her old file confidential.
You can bet it is not her on the hunt for money but the OAG. They get involved because they are on point for collecting Title IV D at .666 cents for every dollar extracted from their target (men).
As a CEO I'll say this, she should have sued that woman for stealing her information. Thats a breach of trust in the company, stealing private information is very illegal and honestly she could end up in prison for that. The company would also have to put out a notice to all their clients and former/current employees telling them they had a breach of security and their information could have been stolen.
I saw a reddit story about a man that wanted to name his kid Ted Bundy. His family last name was Bundy and he was adamant in naming his son after some late relative, Theodore. The wife was desperate to make her husband come to his senses. In the end they settled for the relative's middle name, and thus the child would no longer be Ted Bundy.
The husband really thought people wouldn't connect the two since the kid would be called Teddy Bounde, even tho it's pronounced the same lmao
@@BidenVoting4Trump2024I was married to an Alfredo. He went by Freddy.
I remember that one!
Reminds me of one from early/mid-2020 where OP’s cousin wanted to name her daughter “Karen” (and OP had suggested that, uh, that maybe wasn’t a good idea. OP was actually judged the a-hole, many comments that it’s just an internet meme, who’s really gonna know, it’s not gonna last, etc ~ has aged quite humorously).
And, I just thought to check - cheers for an OP who came back with updates! Baby actually WAS named Karen… until she started daycare. They did run into teasing problems, cousin apologized to OP, and baby started going by “Carrie.” Eventually legally changed to “Caroline,” once the parents saw they were still getting reactions when the kid’s legal name had to be used.
(Edit for typo)
I know children who were named Shithead, pronounced Shith-e-ad…
I wonder if that would still fly today?
I did not think Ted would be the nickname for Theodore, I'd have thought Theo would be the nickname
As a baby mama to a lazy bum I don’t take money from his family and I never would. It is HIS responsibility not theirs. Period
I am so confused how this woman thinks a 15 year old was the father that would open a whole new can of worms. Not to mention it still sounds crazy wrong i have doupts on the cusian. I do think her showing her plan is crazy wrong.
Plot twist: She didn’t think it, she’s just shady.
@@fleacythesheepgirl So many songs come to mind, but i think "every body wants to discus me so this mean im disgusting." fits the crazy lady best.
Fun fact it generally wasn’t really a crime for a woman to have sex with an underage boy until the 1990’s statuary rape and age of consent laws only applied when it was an adult male and female minor. Contrary to popular belief age of consent laws weren’t put in place to protect children just to control girls. Thankfully this has changed
John’s outfits lately are *chefs kiss* 🤌🏻💖 Total fashion icon 🤩
Totally agree!!
I would SO TOTALLY take this to court and COUNTER SUE!!! Yes! OP can 100% counter sue on SO many aspects of this suit
That lady isnt bright at all. She knows the dads name, knows where hes locked up at, but going through family members in fake lawsuits, why, exactly? It is REALLY easy to get a case going for the dad without worrying about him bailing. And i think the test is required in these cases, or he is just forced to pay.
I remember a huge scandal in the celebrity world. Apparently the male lead in the Netflix show Rebelde, got a model knocked up. He was 17 and she was 29. He wasn't even an adult when the baby was born. The woman filed for child support and he had no income, so his very famous mom had to pay child support
He’s was under 18. How did the model not get in trouble for that?
@@raimeyewens7518 I was thinking the same thing. Reverse the genders and someone is going to jail.
Majority of the world and contrary to popular belief majority of the united states the age of consent is 16-17 years old and in many places it only applies to Men as the laws weren’t initially put in place to protect children but to control girls
You guys went off on such a long tangent in the second story that I completely forgot about the story, and when you went back to it I was having trouble remembering what that story was even about 😂😂😂 but it was a good tangent, glad you kept it in (just don't do it too often 😆)
Story 1: that woman suing for child support should go to jail. She stole & copied confidential papers from her job. Bet that's why she got fired. And no court will make family members pay another family member's child support. It's illegal.
I had a lawyer chime in one this . He said they should sue the the woman and lawyer for fraud
Grandparents can be sued if their kid is under aged (can’t remember if it’s 18 or 21) but once the kid is over the age they are no longer responsible. Just because when you kid is a minor your responsibility for them
Made me think of that story years back, a woman tried to sue Justin Bieber for CS, problem was he would have been 14-15 at the time of conception. Pretty sure he wasn't even legal at the time of the lawsuit.
Most places it becomes legal to have intercourse are either 18 years old or when they are married , anytime under the age limit means it's statuary rape of the person is under 18 years old.
That actually has no effect on child support….. for confirmation see teachers who committed statutory rape against their students.
So my ex had 4 practice families very long story but fun fact after the child turns 18 the child is eligible to file for all back child support. My sons are 27 and 29 and they're still getting 300 a month from deadbeat😁
I seriously would tell that attorney that ill see them in court, while laughing, and getting a counter suit for harrassment going lol.
Perfect timing, i need to clean and do laundry 😂
Apparently I'm named after a French mushroom sause 🤦♀️ and its spelled wrong on my BC 🤷♀️… Drugs are bad folks.

Now I'm super curious. Google couldn't tell me of a French mushroom sausage. Kept trying to convince me your name is Toulouse, but there's no mushrooms in that! I hope you like your name, or at least have a fun nickname.
@@alderblanco2362 I thought they ment sauce 🤔
@@carbonn5998 omg you're right I totally misread that.
A new spouse's income cannot be used to determine Child Support.
In Brazil it is legal to sue the grandparents for child support in place of the father .this happened to my aunt's husband when he was sued for child support for his grandson in place of his son because the court couldn't find the son .
That's horrible!
That is not justified at all. Grandparents can't control their kids sex lives.
I had a similar story, but also way different. I married a guy when I was just barely 19 and he was 28, already married and divorced. I got pregnant immediately after marriage. It was a horrible and abusive relationship. I finally left him after about 6 years of marriage and 2 kids. After I left he immediately moved in one of his coworkers that he had been f-ing and they got engaged. They even got tattoos of each other’s names. He ended up going to prison for a pedo related offense. He had an employee stock situation, so I was awarded child support that way. I had to raise our children all by myself. They are both adults now and he is still in prison.
You cannot get child support from another family member unless the father of the child is a minor. She can file with the state and the state can provide some support -- Story 2: You cannot go after the new wife's income to cover child support. They are not responsible for the child. It is off his income only and he has to submit financials and they have to be notarized. The "adopted child" means he had a kid and had his parental rights terminated so that child was able to be adopted by someone else. And they never make a parent pay a lump sum of back support - they tack on additional monthly payments. Also - even if the guy had a kid move in with him, it will not erase back support. And back support has to be paid in full, even after the kid turns 18.
In the US, you cant get support from a non parent family member unless that family member already agreed to take on that role in the court. They dont force people who arent parents to take care of kids, except in the cases where a parent role has been well established for the non parent, such as a husband who raised kids that werent his, but was the acting father since birth.
@@Rhaenarys If the person who fathered or gave birth to the child is still a minor and does not work, yes - you can go after the minor's parents for support.
If it is a non-parent, unless they are listed on the birth certificate, you cannot go after that person for support. Paternity must first be established before support can be ordered. Even if that person raised the child the majority of their life, legally they are not responsible. Please brush up on the laws here in the US...
The parents should be arrested for letting those little kids vape !
I have to believe that her taking the employee file & making a copy to take home with her is illegal & OP could probably sue the company for not having better security for their personnel files.
some child support info:
1- when you are on government support they will go after the non custodial parent even if he is in jail, and while they generally don't expect him to pay while in jail...the debt will accrue and they will garnish tax returns and paychecks.
2- child support will NEVER be calculated against a spouse of the paying party. IE, they cannot go after the new wife in this situation for child support money
3- back child support is limited. some states will only issue child support back to the date you FILED to get it, some will go back a couple years. they wouldn't order this guy to pay retroactive child support for 15 years, particularly since there was already an "order for support" for the insurance.
4- for whatever reason, changes of income are supposed to be reported by the paying party (which like NEVER happens) or the receiving party needs to file periodic audits, which of course if they don't know there was an income change they wouldn't know to do. so the dad in this story could have been making good money for a long time but unless he reported it, or she asked to audit him.... the changes basically don't apply. it's only after she files for change of support that the clock starts running generally.
Public defenders are for criminal cases only. Her only recourse would be to hire an atty, get it dismissed + file for the plaintiff, Slippery Sally, to pay her atty’s fees (since it was such a frivolous case). It should be granted. If it even went that far.
In order to file a counterclaim OP would hv to show damages (on top of mkg Slippery pay her attys fees) and she’d hv to go thru the process and hope she won (the money part). Not worth it.
This is where you file, a bar complaint against the attorney for bringing a bad faith lawsuit, because as offices of the court, they have a duty to only present cases in good faith
You guys should have read relevant comments on the last story cause it gets even wilder. For anyone curious, I'll spill the tea. So, the guy's wife was doing drugs and ripping people off before he went to jail. His boss is also an ex-druggie, and he actually cosigned with the guy for the home loan. So, it is his boss that could end up royally screwed, so crazy.
I love your tangents! Happy almost 4 years John!
My dad and mom divorced when I was 10. My dad paid child support until my mom got in legal trouble, lost custody, and my dad got full custody. He never made my mom pay child support. I was 13 and my sister now 10. When I was maybe 22 my sister 20, the state noticed my mom never paid child support and came after her for 5 years for me and 8 for my sister. My dad was now getting all her tax returns, % of paychecks etc for the next few years (probably about 5-7) after that lol it was comical and he loved it. Since we never really had a relationship with her it was a running joke when we would meet for dinner or went shopping “thank your mom this one’s on her today!” 🤣🤣
Teacher here! Had a King in my class so they must not be strict on the banned names X'D
I wanted the lady and her lawyer to get in trouble for such nonsense.
My stepdad found out he had a child from past relationship through child support papers. His son was 15 when my stepdad found out, the mom did it so she could keep on government help. Since my mom was married to him the tax checks would go to the new son's mom then back to us every other year plus he had to pay child support on top of that.
She can file an injured spouse form to protect her part of the return based on her percent of income earned.
@@mandlerparr1Was about to say the same.
Show up to court and have many friends show up and have a news crew outside the doors waiting for them after the judge laughs him out!

When it comes to naming conventions I don't believe there are any laws. I did a lot of research on this in naming my own child several years ago. I think there are some specific examples, that perhaps were the ones you cited, that came up in local jurisdictions. The US has some of the greatest lienency of anywhere regarding naming. I wasn't interested in naming my child anything strange, but not being married to the father, and believing I would be the primary parent I wanted our child to have both our names. So basically our child has both last names (no hyphen), and the father is not involved. They have a first name, middle, and two last names. The father is also from another culture/language so he provided the middle name and I the first. Therefore, my surname has basically become their defacto surname. I'm glad that my child's heritage is reptesented in their name, and we share the same surname- or otherwise it would make life more complicated for me. Furthermore, my child, is multiracial and doesn't look a whole lot like me (or their father). So there's another reason why I am so glad they have my name.
I know these things do not sound significant, but when it comes to managing and rearing children, there is so much security involved. We live in a big city and my child attends public schools so little things like signing my child in and out of school (because they are still young), is subject to scrutiny. I'm glad they have these measures in place. But I'm glad to avert any additional questions or problems by clearly having the same name. Having both the maternal and paternal surnames are common in Latin America and other cultures. I highly recommend to any expectant mothers out there to do the same because you never know what's going to happen and you want to have the same name as your kid! And it does not need to be at the expense of the father's name either. So thanks to American naming conventions your kids can have as many last names as you like.
I would have shown up at the lawyers office and dropped my draws. LOL
One of my staff is named Princess. She's amazing! 🥰
Nooooooo those little babies.... that video is horrifying

Lists may have been updated precisely because of those people haha
Me and my boyfriend had someone trying to steal our house up from under us stating that they owned the house. Stating the house was willed to them by the man she was taking care of but the twist was is his grandmother had a mans name and the good thing is we had all the right paperwork that case was quickly dismissed by their own lawyer
I went through my in laws for help with medical. Nebulizer and solution, hoses. O2 tank refills. And that was for years until Affordable Care Act. It covered everything.

Big baller move: Go for full custody 🤣
I cant IMAGINE why the mother was fired. Stealing employee records? 😮
This happened to me, but worse. The child support division of the attorney general started taking child support out of my check each week. This went on for several months. The woman was a Mexican woman, from a state I had never been to. It turned out that the man was a illegal immigrant who stole my social security number.
Geezus chryst! I swear that whole child support story sounds EXACTLY like my best friend's story! 😮
No way!
I didn’t know you guys lived in the same house lol The old purple background made me feel like Riley was zooming in from a different state and you guys had a studio somewhere.
If the lawyer send you a letter call their law firm and get them in trouble. Their companies don’t like them using their resources without getting a cut. A friend just had a lawyer fired over it lol
There actually is a politician in Namibia named after the No No Mustache Man.
She could ask for court costs and legal fees at the end. She could also appear for a court date alone, represent herself (pro se), and say her piece.
why is this a question? sue her for libel (written court docs she submitted) and make sure you follow through.
there was a case a few years back where a man anonymously donated sperm at a sperm bank, years later the guy gets a letter in the mail that he was being sued for child support from the woman who accepted the sperm. they spent years in court and eventually he had to give up due to lack of funds. the court system is nuts.
The woman should absolutely be held accountable for perjury and filing a false legal document. Also, you shouldn’t be able to sue a parent’s family for child support. That’s ridiculous. They weren’t involved with the making of the child, how could they possibly be held accountable in any way?
YTLDR: my ex quit every job when he had to start paying more than the minimum 25 amount for the state
He never paid for anything as he was always broke and he never really called or saw his two kids.
Just as I had enough and filled for a review since he had a job and since my kids were 3 and 2 he only paid 25 a month. Kids are now 14 and 16. 3 months after filling for a review, he decided to play hangman irl.
Sad , yes but only because now he never has a chance to make it up to his 3 kids. Yes 3 he got his partner before me pregnant 6 months before I meet him. He only saw that kid twice in his life and never admitted to being his father.
You could say he was/is the ultimate deadbeat dad.

No, get a high priced attorney to sue the pants off both her & her lawyer.
hell yeah, let them take it to court and counter sue for your own legal fees, wages lost for the day you had to show up, and harassment. also suggest to the judge that the 'mother' needs to be arrested for lying on legal documents.

"should other family members be obligated to pay child support?" I dunno, if your grandfather robbed a bank should you go to prison for it because they couldn't catch him? If your cousin gets into an accident, but doesn't have insurance, should you be held liable for the difference he can't cover? Come on now.
If she has to get a attorney then she needs to counter sue
Paralegal here, with a masters degree not a JD. I never had ANY intentions of becoming an attorney. Research and paperwork were my areas of expertise and I lived for writing briefs. Law clerks are often attorney's in training, so to speak, either in school still or newly graduated. We are also NOT legal secretaries. I have seen their job, and no thank you. They take on a lot.
She should have threaten to sued for custody of the child with child support.
I personally know a Princess, an Isis, Yer-Hyness, a Master and a De-Nile. No name is off limits as far as I can tell but no numbers.
as a step mom.. MY finances were never allowed to be brought into consideration for my husband's support obligations.. HIS obligations were soley based on HIS income, because his kids were not MY legal responsibility, just like, in the first case, she would not have been legally responsible for paying support for her cousin's child
John's looking very good today ✨
That list isn't true. I'm a NICU nurse and have taken care of multiple babies named King and Majesty 😂
When I was in high school there was an article about a family that c p s threatened to take their baby away if they didn't change the baby's name because it was considered putting the child in harm's way.
1) OP should call the district attorney that the birth certificate was filed for perjury.... 2) Make a complaint against that lawyer for participating in a fraud by a delusional client... 3) definitely get an Order of Protection because the mother is not quite right in the head.
Loving that outfit John!
Story times!
So my (29f) partners coworker (mid 20s male) actually pretended to transition to a woman to get custody. I would never assume someone coming out as Trans was faking if he hadn't told me exactly that! We were friends for a while and he was trying to fight for fill custody. He had reason to believe hard drugs were being used around his 2 yr old and I personally drove him to multiple days in family court. After the judge didn't side with him (as the mother tested clean) and therefor retained full custody he looked to me determined and said "I swear swear God if i pretended I was a fucking woman I'd get custody."
Needless to say we weren't friends after that. We realized over the next few weeks be was actually a pretty bad dude. Border line pathological liar with a heavy dash of ignorant misogyny.
How ever a few months later he moved away and CAME OUT AS "TRANS".They re-filed for full custody and WON! They came out online and kept up the çherade for about a year and now he's retransitioned back to a man and still holds full custody of his child. The family court system is broken.
You tell the lawyer to f-off and tell them i will sue them if they continue with this.
She can't get a public defender, but she can counter sue to have the other party pay for legal fees, and attorney costs.
What OP should've done is find another big/famous story & say, "How'd you like to win a case in record time & be able to have a fantastic story for your book?" If they ask what book, just say, "trust me....this will sell. Just add in any other weird cases & it'll hit the NYT best seller list." Wah-la...free great lawyer & the next time you may need them, they''ll love you!
I would also let it go to court and let the judge laugh them out of court!
I actually know someone named Princess. And yes, she looked like a princess, she is beautiful.
That's lucky! I once met a Linda (pretty in spanish) and everyone made fun of her because she wasn't conventionally attractive 💀
frivolous lawsuit... place a complaint with the bar to have the attorney disbarred and counter-sue.
Statutory doesn't count. If she was a boy she'd still have to pay child support. See the case of the teacher getting knocked up by her 12 yr old student case.
I once met someone whose first name was Captain. I remember he had a hyphenated last name where the first surname was one that is also a common first name. Something along the lines Stewart or Tate. So it sounded like he was in the military whenever he introduced himself. Like: Captain Tate-Smith or Captain Stewart-Jones. He’d have to clarify Captain was his first name and he wasn’t in the military.
I have a 2yr old that I'm in the process of adopting right now, she is the youngest of EIGHT for bio Mom and 5 of SIX for bio Dad and neither of them have ANY of their kids!!! If you don't want kids- get permanently fixed so you don't being children into your mess!!!

In most states the new spouse is NOT responsible for child support or alimony payments. The new spouse is known as "an injured spouse" as they should not be held responsible for child support orders made before marriage. In this case, the order was made before marriage. Changes in the order can only include changes to the original oblidger's income and changes in the original oblidger's situation.
In this case, the original order was made before the new marriage. The new child will be considered as this is another child for which the payee is financially responsible to contribute as well.
I read a Reddit story about a historian whose last name was Brown, whose wife was dead set on naming their daughter Eva... Despite his career and the connection his colleagues would make faster than I did, she was mad he continued to refuse.
