    Detailed how-to below:
Many of us use Keurig coffee makers to brew our morning beverage. They get used day after day and need to be cleaned so that they'll last a long time and keep your beverage tasting great.
While it may seem daunting at first, it's an easy process once you know how to clean each part. Also, some of these parts are dishwasher safe which makes our job even easier. Ok, no time to waste, let's get started.
    Here's what you'll need:
    - Cleaning toothbrush
    - Pure white vinegar
    - All-purpose cleaner
    - Microfiber cloth, dish liquid.
Start by taking the parts apart:
    - Reservoir and lid
    - Drip tray and drip tray cover
    - K cup holder & funnel (this takes some work & be careful, there's a sharp needle on the end of this!)
Soak these in warm, soapy water or place them in the top rack of the dishwasher if you prefer. Always place these items on the top rack of the dishwasher to avoid melting the plastic!! If you are soaking them, leave them in the sink for 15 minutes or so and then gently wipe the interiors with a rag or sponge. Rinse well and towel dry.
While they are soaking, take your cleaning toothbrush and gently brush out any stuck coffee grinds that will eventually inhibit the machine from working properly. Use a damp cloth to remove any build-up from the inner holder. Wipe the exterior with a cloth and all-purpose cleaner. Pretty straightforward stuff.
Then, put it all back together and run a descaling brew. To do this, fill your reservoir half way with white vinegar. Brew several 'beverages' with no K cup in the holder to clean the reservoir and tubing until the vinegar runs out. The vinegar will break down the calcium deposits. When that's done, remove the reservoir and rinse well. Refill it with water and run more brews of water through to rinse out the reservoir and tubing and get rid of any vinegar. When you don't smell vinegar anymore, you know you're in the clear. This will take about 15 minutes and is admittedly quite boring.
That's it - the straightforward and simple way to keep your Keurig machine clean and caffeinated.
Three quick maintenance things you should know:
If you are going away for over a week, don't leave water in the reservoir. It'll evaporate and leave the mineral deposits behind that clog the system.
If you brew something sticky like a hot chocolate or iced tea, run a cleansing brew of just water and no K Cup through after you've made your drink. This will rinse out any sugar crystals that would otherwise be cakey or create a blockage.
Use distilled water - they suggest this because regular tap water has calcium or other minerals that can leave deposits in the reservoir and machine over time. The deposits clog the heating coils and that means your machine has to work harder, longer and use more energy. If you don't use distilled water you will have to clean it more often to keep it going strong.

This is my 2nd Keurig coffee maker of this model. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf The first worked fine for more than 2 years, and I could still get a decent cup of coffee out of it if I fiddled with it when I decided to replace it. The problem I had with my first unit was this: When attempting to brew a cup of coffee, the unit would either keep brewing until the coffee was undrinkable or it would not run long enough and the coffee produced was way too strong. I cleaned the unit as best I could but it did not help. So in the end it was just too much trouble to get a good cup of coffee out of it, so I decided to replace it with a new one, which has been working great since I unpacked it.

I have found that after running the vinegar through the Keurig, I run a couple of rinses with water the I dissolve 1/4 tsp of baking soda in 2 cups of water, run another cycle, then freshwater. All traces of vinegar have now been removed.

One more thing to add. On top of the cup holder where you press down, where the upper housing unit pokes the upper portion of the coffee little cannister, there's a hollow needle that often gets clogged with coffee grounds. Then that happens, you'll get a slow brew or half filled cup. To unclog it, just spread open a paperclip and insert into the hollow needle until it feels free and see the coffee grounds drop out ! It's quick and easy.Just be careful not to poke your finger while doing it, super sharp !!

Melissa, Keurig recommends that you run the vinegar through and when you're asked to fill the reservoir, you hold it for two hours with the system left on. I found that two hour wait makes a huge difference. Thanks for your videos, they're awesome.

Thanks for this video!! Bought 2 Keurig minis at local thrift stores (one for $24.99 and the other for $14.99 - some shopping, eh?) . I would never even BEGIN to consider buying thrift items so intricate if I hadn't already seen this video. I tripled the vinegar times - just being persnickety...but they work BEAUTIFULLY. Thanks not only for helping me clean these - but for helping me save money as well!!

Ways we kept our keurig clean (same one used in the video).
    1. We used filtered water run through a sink filter or Zero-water (any pitcher filter) sometimes we use store-bought water and it's great.
    2. We use a small kitchen scrubber and hot water + dish soap to clean the water reserve.
    3. The nozzle holder (that holds k-cups) makes a difference if you can clean it. I haven't gotten the bottom part off yet but I will!
    4. Running vinegar fixes it when the lime/calcium buildup got bad, but it takes a lot of water to rinse it. (otherwise it'll taste nasty XD) Try two full water cycles.
I think cleaning about once every month or so helps keep it from getting bad.

Great video! Ahhh, the magic of vinegar, right?! 🤸🤸🤸 I just did this and I couldn't be happier, thanks! 🙂🙂 So much cheaper than the Keurig solution, and no worries about chemicals. (I'm sure they claim the cleaning solution is food grade, but I don't trust these companies any longer with such claims) With this method, you definitely KNOW that vinegar is food grade. 👍👍
I'd like to suggest using a large bowl for catching all the cleaning brews, specifically with the 2.0 model, like I have. I'm well aware that not everyone has a 2.0, but a bowl works as long as your drip tray comes out to expose countertop under the tray space. It saves time babysitting and dumping cup after cup, and you can use your particular highest setting every time. 😉😉😉 Dump the bowl when necessary and continue on until your done cleaning your Keurig! So much more efficient! 😊😊😊

Additionally, ours kept dripping long after a brew. Take the parts out (where the water runs through), be careful of the needle!!!, and carefully wash all grounds out & off, especially the the little ramp looking piece where the grounds created a dam which caused the liquid to backup and drip forEVER after a brew. Works great now. Plan to use your video to do the general cleaning! Again, great video! Love the graphics and editing!

Thanks for these helpful instructions…I’ve owned a Keurig since they 1st came out & no one ever heard of them…💖 it! I usually clean mine with vinegar and cleaned the pod holder and area, but I always mixed the vinegar with water. For the first time ever I noticed stuff floating in my water reservoir! I was so grossed out! 😱 I was sick a few days and didn’t drink coffee, so perhaps that’s what caused the gunk to appear? 🤷‍♀️ Never has this happened before, so I figured this time I needed a stronger cleaner and came across your video saying to use straight vinegar! I was actually considering using bleach, but using just straight vinegar (not watered down) made a huge difference! Thanks so much for info and easy to follow along directions! Happy clean coffee drinking to all! 🧼☕️☕️🤩

Here in 2020. I suggest allowing the vinegar to sit for about an hour (at the point where it says to add water) before running the system with clean water. This allows the vinegar to break down any mineral deposit more thoroughly. It's odd, I have this same Keurig machine (just recently replaced it with a 2-in-1coffee maker) and mine says that the lid and reservoir is NOT dishwasher safe.

  • @montymay

I seem to recall from the manual that hot vinegar should stay in the machine for a while rather than just being run through, and that it should be run through multiple times, but I could be wrong. Enjoyed the opening and closing scenes, but I can understand why some people would not. Such a lot of comments, some of which are inappropriate, for a short video on cleaning a coffee maker!

I then ran through 2 full carafes of water, just to be sure. My husband made coffee this morning and the cream curdled (it's not gone bad). Just to be sure, he made a second cup with milk (also well before expiration). Curdled again. He unhappily went out to Dunkin' Donuts to buy coffee. I used the vinegar and also jiggled it to the side several times and it unclogged the air bubbles or something that was blocking the water from coming through. Also make sure you avoid letting the container out of water as air may get absorbed in the lines. Happy coffee!

ugh u seriously saved me! i was about to toss my keurig cuz i left it alone for so long, and the white build up was so bad i was afraid to drink my coffee.....but i will try the vinegar. hope that does it!

@Christian Breen if the vinegar won't descale it after letting it sit inside the internal tank for about 30 min. Then you will likely have to move to a stronger product like CLR which can be purchased at most hardware stores and has directions on the container for cleaning coffee makers. If your unit has a bad pump though that still will not fix it.

I definitely taste the big differences in my coffee after following these steps. Goodness, this whole time I've been drinking dirty cups of coffee...

I got a used one from someone, been using it a bit myself. I don't think vinegar would be enough, I also hate the stuff.. I took the funnel apart (the part you skipped) and with a Qtip got a ton of black crud out, It doesn't look like coffee grinds. Its also easy and doesn't take any "finagleing", it just snaps apart. I had to look up an official keurig video because I was afraid I would break it using force.

you should do a video on keeping the refridgerator clean. It is a constant battle for me and is often forgotten about. Thanks Melissa!

The inside cover of my Keurig says, "NOT Dishwasher Safe". Might want to check
before throwing it into the dishwasher!

Yep. Every original keurig says "dishwasher safe" with an all caps "NOT" right before it. Guess she missed the intentionally capitalized "not"...

Thanks for the video. I suggest to take apart the Keurig K-Cup Holder and clean the bottom part as well.

My older Keurig from work did not have the NOT dishwasher safe notice on it. The newer one DID say NOT dishwasher safe. Other than that, your video was perfect for the "manual" challenged viewer.

Hello Melissa - thoroughly enjoying your videos - and your humour! Have you produced a video which details a recommended weekly cleaning schedule?
    Cheers! - Mike.

the keurig manual also suggests toblet the vinegar sit for a few hours so it can clean out the mineral deposits. Like any cleaner putting it on and rinsing it out immediatly is ineffective.

I'm a bit over the top with keeping mine clean so I run two cleaning cups of just water after I'm done making my coffee in the morning. The first cleaning cup is actually very light brown when done so I know it's gotten some residue out. The second is just for good measure but probably not necessary because it's clear. I know this way it's clean the next morning and it cuts down on how often I need to do the vinegar treatment. I do the vinegar treatment every six months. Mine has been running like new for 3½years now.

Also, the needle that punctures the top of the k-cup needs to be cleaned.
Unfold a small paperclip and carefully insert the unfolded end in the tip of needle and clean it out periodically between cleanings.

I was too! Clean it according to this video. It's probably the k-cup holder that's dirty. I used the toothbrush and q-tips to clean the tight spots, and soaked the little k-cup holder. But just do what the video says, it will be fine.

I would recommend using urnex products for both descaling and cleaning any coffee machine. They're products are specifically designed as detergents for back flushing espresso machines so they don't leave behind a gross after taste like vinegar will. You can buy a big bottle of the powder for about 10 bucks.
