Great video and I like that you stuck with the same ammo. I've done some similar testing with .357, but I don't have a 10mm to run it against. I have noticed though, that different revolvers have significantly different cylinder gaps and that this has a lot to do with overall performance, as much as barrel length. My next goal is to run a 10mm side by side against my Coonan 357 with similar ammo to see what I get. Running 125gr .357 through it I was seeing velocities in the 1560 FPS range vs the same round from my Ruger GP-100 4" at about 1500 FPS, but that is here in CO at about 6K ft.

Keep in mind that 357 mag has more potential than per round than 10mm because it has more case capacity and can be loaded way hotter because revolvers don’t have to same pressure limitations that semiautos do, and with a 180 gr bullet 357 Mag has more Sectional density than a 200gr 10mm, theoretically having a advantage when compared at identical velocity’s.

When I was young, I'm 74 now, and I went where the great bears roam, my side arm was a Ruger SS Blackhawk 4 5/8 barrel in 45 Colt. My hand load was Nosler 300 grain partitions at 1,100-1,200 fps. I figured I had only 2 maybe 3 shots to stop a bear on the move from 25 yards. I saw a fair number of bears, only one got close enough for me to smell his breath and hear him pop his chops. The Ruger was in hand with the hammer back, lucky for both of us , he changed his mind. I would liked to have a .454 Casull! The only thing I ever shot with my Ruger was a Chevy small block, WOW, made scrap out of it. Still own the gun.

For my EDC I carried a Glock 23 40cal or sometimes a s&w model 66 3inch 357mag but I always kept the marlin in the truck. Now that I live back on the NC coast when I got fishing or duck hunting I keep a s&w model 60snubby 357 on me and when I deer hunt I have a Glock 20 on my hip and my model 60 in my pocket or backpack as a backup

My two cents on best bullet for bear in 10mm-175/180 gr truncated cone pushed at max velocity. The reliability of feeding from the TC-the 180 gr weight which is adequately heavy without eating up case capacity and finally the 10 in a 6 inch self loader with 14+1 capacity is just about as ideal as it gets.

Timer draw from various rigs would be interesting. Obviously whatever you usually use will be faster, but it'd be interesting to see the mechanics of the various "standard" carry methods looked at while wearing actual field gear. Kind of a "He's coming right for me!" test. Chest rig, on pack strap, on hip, but with the gear that would be carried worn as well, to be realistic.

That was a really inconsistent box of ammo, but, it reminds me also, of when I told you, that .357 Magnum, is not more powerful than 10mm. Especially in the heavier for caliber loads. They do over lap each other very well, and sometimes the .357 will out penetrate the 10mm, depending on what’s being compared. Here, already it’s not comparing apples to apples, because the bullet weights are different, and on top of that, crappy, inconsistently loaded .357 rounds. They are really close performers to each other, but it appears Underwood can’t keep people on the job, that have the care or skill, to produce consistent loads. It could be that the powder used doesn’t meter well in their equipment, or they frankly have an employee that just does not care. I’m sure it doesn’t pay well. The components are top notch, the quality of assembly is not. There are too many variables that can make them both beat each other depending on what’s being used, quality, consistency and component wise, and then the actual guns they are fired from.

as you alluded to a cartridge is only as good as it is made. that is also true for power. off the shelf ammo is quite a bit different than handloads, including bb and underwood. the 357 is capable of greater velocities and energies.
since different calibers do better or worse with different weights there is no legit way to compare performance by a specific weight. you can only go by light, medium, and heavy for caliber, picking the best for each. or as many subdivisions you want.
it mostly comes down to preference, revolver or auto. and some play the round count game. chances are, if you play the odds, the same job will get done with either

When accompanying my adult son on his elk hunt this past year (in grizzly country), I carried a 12 gauge shotgun with Brenneke's slugs and a .357 mag with Buffalo Bore loads as a backup. Whereas I would have preferred a .44 mag, I find that the recoil is too great for my old a$$. My logic is that I could get more lead into the bruin with the .357 than the .44 mag.

Good video ! I've noticed a little difference in advertised velocities and my revolvers and semi autos. I tested certain ammo brands in both my 10mm Glock and 610 Smith and Wesson revolver. The Revolver always had a slightly lower velocity. This is due to the cylinder gap in a revolver. The gases just kind of dwell there and escape while a semi auto forces the gases down the barrel, or allow them to escape in the short rechambering time.

No disrespect, but that's bullshit and already been debunked, modern revolvers have the tightest cylinder gap and much stronger forcing cones that don't break as easily as older revolvers, they don't lose that much gas, plus the revolver has a true 6" barrel and the Glock 40 kkm barrel is 6.5" but you only using 5.3 because of the chamber and overall length of the cartridge, also if you don't use at least a 22lb recoil spring you're losing gasses through the breach.

It depends, on average 10mm heavyweight 180gr-200gr bullets do better than heavyweight 180gr 357 magnum, but when you compare lightweight bullets the 357 magnum quickly overshadows the 10mm & it goes back & forth.

Having looked at a lot of numbers and penetration tests, 10mm seems to be just about the best round out there for applications other than concealed carry (I'm not saying it can't be a good CC round, but lots of people have criteria for a CC gun that would rule out lots of 10mm pistols. If you don't plan to CC, those criteria go out the window). I think it has the best balance of mass, velocity and surface area of pretty much all the calibers out there. Carry it in a full size or competition/long slide gun, and you've got yourself a hell of a package.

Normally I would say that the .45 ACP is less than ideal in bear-country. I've seen you shoot and carry the .45 Super in your G21 but I'd be curious to see how the .45 ACP hardcast does. But autos are subject to failure to feed and such not to mention some are more complex. Glocks are a little different in that they utterly simplified the automatic pistol leaving out safety’s and double action - it’s just pull trigger and go. Having said that you must still rely on proper function whereas revolvers are simple : keep pulling trigger until empty!! I guess since I grew up with revolver not automatic pistol( until adult) it’s in my blood. I love auto pistols more than anybody ! I have a beretta performance X competition pistol( among others) but my SW 686 plus is what’s by my bed not beretta because in the middle of night I don’t want to fiddle around with safety or other issues just get r done. I don’t own any glocks so there is that. The increased ammo is really main advantage unless maybe you say faster rate of fire. I just don’t think of autos as woods guns it’s just stuck in my stubborn head lol plus I want utter simplicity - thats MY fear factor ! So maybe double carry an glock as back up huh !

    Thanks for your dedicated work.
Would you consider those rounds adequate, effective on Black Bear and Grizzley Bear?
Those Underwood 180 grain 357 magnum rounds are said to be;Top of the Line in superior power factors.
Either way with either the 10mm or 180 grain 357 Magnum are known to be effective rounds.
Yes a drawing video would be good.
    Safe Journeys !

Yes they'll work on a grizzly if you place it in the right place. But that's true even with .454 casull or .44 magnum.
Well with low velocity the Underwood 180gr under performed. The buffalo bore 180gr is much better.

I agree with you. Big Black& Grizzley Bears have been stopped killed numerous times by different people using Handguns in Hunting or Wilderness Defense situations.
I am confident at having designed an effective world reknown RFN bullet series knowing the Bullets
capabilities with the noted experts along with myself all having quickly stopped and killed several Wild Boar with the use of my Universal Bullets in percussion revolvers.
That with the use of my Universal Bullets in properly loaded percussion revolvers such would be effective, sufficient at stopping and killing a Big Black Bear or even Grizzley Bear with them.
      Underwood needs to look into this and take all necessary actions to;
up the charge and or quality control on their 180 grain 357 Magnum round.
Let's not forget that Alaskan Guide Phil Shoemaker who effectively stopped and killed a charging Grizzley Bear with 9mm 147 grain + P Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman in a
      S&W 3953 9mm pistol.
Keep up the good work. Best Wishes & Safe Journeys!

This was very interesting. I just bought a S&W model 686 and am enjoying it very much. I had no idea how that round compared with the 10MM. I would think the semi-auto with that powerful of a round would be much better against something like a bear. I still can't shoot the revolver as well as my XD .40. so I would imagine there would be not only an accuracy advantage but also number of rounds advantage with the semi-auto.
