I own 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5S. When you try to remove old CV Axle from the transmission, I recommend you to use 15" flat pry bar rather than pry bar. There is a gap about 1/4 inch between the wall of transmission and CV Axle and it may be difficult to remove it with pry bar since there is not much room for leverage. I bought a slide hammer with axle puller adapter but it required a wider size axle puller adapter so I couldn't use it at all. By the way, thanks to 1A Auto for the video series. You guys saved me a lot of money for repair cost!
Here is a tip so you won't screw up like I did. Look at how he's separating the ball joint with the tool at 5:02. I did that the top slipped off and damaged some of the threads. That was almost a disaster. Leave the nut on the top to protect the treads. So when I tried putting the nut back on, the blot turned too. I had to place a jack at the point of the control arm bolt to hold it then I was able to thread the nut on by force.
You guys always have great how to videos,,however I like the option of removing strut bolts tie rod end and brake hose clip and abs clip ,,removing cotter pin on ball joint always a pain
how would one go about getting out the axle where it meets the transmission if inside the boot has disconnected pretty much i cant seem to get a pry bar between the back of the axle and the transmission any suggestions? i tried to grab the axle and pull by hand and its not gonna be enough stength to get it over the surclip
U can't change just the CV joint, they don't sell them like that. An Axle has 2 CV joints so if any going wrong u replace the axle. I'm in same boat as u and just recently learned
On the right side the axle is longer..I have a sound comming from the middle part. Not sure how it's called a nut? Can that be bought, changed separtly oŕ the whole right axle?
I had to change my dads 2006 2.5s model, thing is the passenger cv axle ended getting stuck. My dads been needing a new axle anyway since it’s never been changed after 14 years! Problem is we can’t break the axle nut loose and I can’t get the tire on either since the shock isn’t mounted in. Again the axle is stuck but I some advice on getting it loose without the tire on.😤 please help!
+Miguel Bernabe Have you tried PB Blaster? There are lots of forums online discussing how people got stuck axle nuts off from impact guns to sledge hammers. Good luck!
I couldn't get the pry bar in the ideal position to undo the clip inside the transmission. I ended up using a crowbar and placed it between the wheel well and the caliper. That allowed me to get the right amount of leverage to pull it apart. I hope this helps somebody
+Umair Rocky Uneven or bent axles are another common cause of car vibration. ... If this happens, you'll feel your car start to “jostle” as you drive - and this vibration will usually increase in intensity as you drive faster. It's also possible that your driveshaft is damaged.
We're always cycling through cars filming hundreds of common repairs for common vehicles every month. We'll add this to our list of repairs to film. Check back again and hopefully we'll have it soon. +Andrew Chrisos
Thank you so much! The passenger side is a little different. It has a carrier bearing, and I think I even messed the alignment up putting the new one in, so it would be awesome to be able to see the most professional way to do it
This is for a L4 engine on an automatic Altima. The steps would not be the same for your V6 manual. We will keep this in mind for future videos! Thanks for watching! +10k Rms
Nice video, Thanks for explaining the process. Honestly though, most of us common folks don't have the luxury of a "vehicle host/lift" . Most of us are regulated to lowly floor jack. Popping out the axle from the trans axle can be a real bitch. I've watched a burly mechanic pry it out of a Maxima and he struggled a bit before it popped out. And trans fluid kinda shot out too. This was an older Maxima , so maybe they made it easier on the Altima. But trying to pop out the axle while laying on your back , on the floor with limited space to angle the pry bar can be f king Hell. And I ain't no prim a Donna. But thanks for the video.
+Michael Burke The part shown in the video is only for automatic transmission models. I would double check the part listing prior to ordering as it will always say if there are other specifications that you need to match to your vehicle. Thanks for watching!
Is this the same process for the back drivers side? I’ve been trying to look up rear driver side cv axle on your website and haven’t found anything. I’m assuming the front driver side axle is the same as the driver side rear?
+Andrea Buan Since The steering knuckle has to be disconnected to make the repair, it may be a good idea to have the vehicle aligned after performing the repair. 1aauto.com

+Angel T. Thank you for checking us out. You may be able to use some of the steps shown, but the 1999 model uses a different part and the sizing of hardware may be different. 1aauto.com
Sometimes the rubber boots on the axle wear out and dries out the grease then it starts making a clicking sound whenever you turn the steering wheel to turn.
"Driver's side".. Isn't it much easier and precise to say LEFT side? Who cares, what side they drive on in America, since BEST cars are made by Japan anyway)) Those yanks always surprise me with their weird mentality)) Driver's side! Give me a break))

So mix matching an non-ABS axle with an ABS axle won't give me any problems? I am having a hard time finding a non-ABS axle for my 2006.
Yup no problems
Great work you make it look easy it’s not I know

I have an 09 Altima. Will CVT fluid or transmission oil come out when changing the axel from both sides?
You do not need to remove the ball joint bro all you need is to release the caliper that will do the trick I do it like that.
Remove caliper?
Hi! Mike, I assume you do what I will ask but just making sure. for doing your self parts do you offer warranty?
Is it better to change the whole axle if it's just the CV joint needs to change or just change the CV joint alone
U can't change just the CV joint, they don't sell them like that. An Axle has 2 CV joints so if any going wrong u replace the axle. I'm in same boat as u and just recently learned
Does this also work with the passenger side??
Great info here my car is 2011 Elantra my passenger side cv joint needs to be replaced
I WISH I HAD A LIFT. I always wondered if Nissan ABS CV axles were interchangeable with Non ABS CV Axels.
What size (lbs) was that dead blow hammer you used?
How different is the passenger side? Longer axle.
Can you guys do a video on how to replace the axle seals
On the right side the axle is longer..I have a sound comming from the middle part. Not sure how it's called a nut? Can that be bought, changed separtly oŕ the whole right axle?

Can axels can cause vibration in car while driving?? I mean it will shake?

Are CV Axles transmission specific, or are they universal for both auto and manuals?

How much time to do that Job?
Why did you replace it ?it look fine
+STEEVE DAVID Nicolas The video is intended to show our viewers on how to replace their axles.
How do you remove circlip from transmission 😅

1A Auto Parts cool thanks so much, after doing some research I realized how dumb my comment is haha
would that throw the car out of alignment when you replace cv axle

both side same length??
What can happen if the clip on the end of the axel doesn't go all the way inn?
