The axle nut size is 32 mm and the ball joint castle nut is 21mm. If you live somewhere where they use salt on the roads, more than likely the carrier bearing will be seized to its mount. So if you can't separate them , remove the carrier bracket that mounts to the engine. I used a long flex head wrench to get mine off. Then I beat it with a hammer while out of the car till it lossened a little and used a hammer to offset the mounting points and followed a video I found on here and worked like a charm. Once offset put the original bolt back in backwards and crank them down evenly till that bastard separates. Hope this helps someone out.
The hardest part of this was breaking loose the lower control arm. Had to work a bit to get it loose, but after that, it was pretty easy. I had to change the rotor at the same time anyway, so I took the whole brake assembly apart, which helped getting the CV Axle out also. Doing it this way saves me from having to have the front end realigned!!!! good info in this vid.
Preston Newton lol when ever the steering components are touched the car will always need an alignment. The axles are part of the steering components. The outer tie rod moves on a axis of a spherical ball, so does the inner tie rod.
Thanks for the great video. Definitely looks like a job I can handle at home. We just heard the clicking for the first time yesterday evening. We immediately returned home to swap vehicles since I wasn't sure what it was. I have a 2005 Altima SE 3.5 with 190,000. Already have done the inner/outer tie rods on each side as well as the struts, so sounds like the CV joint is next.
Adding socket sizes to the video helps. But thanks for the video. I ran in to major problem after changing the passenger strut. The CV axle locked in place and would not allow me to align to the strut.
If you live in the rust belt...good luck if the people didn't put anti-seize on the piece where the 3 bolts and the cylindrical part of the axle meet. You might need a torch and hammering galore. Just did mine, no picnic. Thankfully I have a quick jack and a friend that doesn't want to give up. It was not a fun experience, but got it done but it was not as easy as this fellow shows pulling it out with "ease".
For the step on 2:40 off the video my car does not have the 3 bolts no pattern I have a nissan altima 05 2.5l 4 speed I'm stuck at this level I got everything out
So this is 2.5 liter motor? Or 6 cyl? So on this job there are no c clips etc..I watched a few other CV axle video jobs on other cars and seemed there was a trick to installing new spine in transmission..this job seemed very simple..thanks
this looks easy enough to do on my own I just would need all the tools. Lol so question how much should someone (being me) pay for a job done on my Nissan Altima 2002. But for two front axles?
Ok so I've got a bit of a pickle; I've got half of the axle out. I have no other tools to really aid in the rest, could you possibly give me some help with this?
Any ideas as to why I can't get the control arm to separate from the brake assembly? Multiple videos including this one show it separating with ease but mine is glued tight.
I have a cracked cv axel boot, it's on my 06 Altima 3.5SL. Another you tuber mechanic said that if I am hearing a clicking sound while driving and turning, then i should replace the whole axle then spend money to replace the boot. If that is true then I will hold off on replacing the cv boot. The sounds I hear when turning is like having a playing card clamp to a bicycle wheel. Could that be a sign of my whole axle about to fail ? I'm also going to replace my front side motor mount. The mechanic I took it to found a crack on there too.
You probably took care of this already, but yeah I'd just replace the entire axle. Usually, once you hear clicking, the outer CV joint is toast. Instead of replacing the joint and the likely torn boot, just replace the entire axle. Way easier.
Are you able to do it yourself? Might save a couple hundred in labor that way. Axles are a fairly easy job. They require a bit of brawn because of the bigger bolts that need to be removed, but its a very straightforward repair.
Would a broken/ snap axle cause a car to not engage in drive, reverse and make a noise from neutral to park. It’s a 2005 Nissan Altima v6 3.5 SE-R. I don’t think it’s valve body
Was trying to change the axel on the drivers side, it does not have bolts on it, i can't seem to remove it, tried hitting it with a crowbar & hammer, but couldn't get it off, any suggestions why?
I gave up after an hour of whacking at it and removed the carrier bracket. Even with the bracket + axle removed from the car it still took several whacks and a pry bar to separate the two.
I crawled under the car and placed a 6" socket extension on the lower bolt boss of the axle housing. I smacked the extension good and hard with a hammer which caused the axle housing to rotate just a bit. It won't rotate very far as the upper right boss contacts something after maybe 3/4 inch of rotation. I looked closely where the axle housing contacts the carrier bracket and discovered that in the process of rotating, the axle had pulled away from the carrier bracket just a bit - maybe 1/64 or so. It was enough of a gap to get the tip of a small pry bar into and after some wiggling back and forth with progressively larger pry bars, the axle popped right out.
yup def didnt come easily, the way i got it was put a sharp chisel between the flange and carrier assembly, then worked at it with prybars and penetrating oil. was still a bitch but this tip might help you in the future
I can say this difficulty level raises when your doing it on the ground and 20 years have passed. He just pulled that thing out I had to beat the shit out of it to get it out lol
I've been having a big problem with the passenger side axle. No matter how many times I disassemble and reassemble it, the axle nut spins off even after being torqued to specs. The axle mounting bracket near the transmission is firmly in place and tight, but as soon as you put the car in gear and press the gas, the nut spins off!!!!
I finished the change already, the video was still very helpful in the process. Once I realized there was a slight difference I just had to do it a tad different.
I thought you supposed to use a ball joint press because of lower control arm is made out of aluminum beating on it you could cause damage but I see you did differently.
No need to be upset. The way we were doing videos back then there would be months between recording and editing so the sizes would get lost to time. The way we do it now is much better. You can always use trial and error. Thanks for watching!
jose Reyes yea definitely is a maxima, I thought I was tripping seeing things I had to look at the title and rewind the video like 3 times. Altimas don’t have axel nuts when you take the tire off🤨

Was it a power steering leak that messed the axel boot up?
Nope. Thanks for watching!
I higly recommend using grease on the splines for easier insertion and silicone the boots.
Can you please expand silicone on boots!!

what axel nut SIZE does my 2004 nissan altima 2.5s use??
I have the exact same question
32mm
I tried to do the passenger side on an 03 today and followed every step but the axle just would not come out does anyone as to why?
Questions: What size socket for the axle nut? What size wrench for the A-arm bolt?
32mm
this looks easy enough to do on my own I just would need all the tools. Lol so question how much should someone (being me) pay for a job done on my Nissan Altima 2002. But for two front axles?
Tiffany Wilson of
🤣😭😂😂
If you're axle isn't moving with ease that means hammering the hub end didn't loosen the transmission side spindle.
Is it critical to get the torque correct on the axle nut so you don't heat the bearings up and wear them out?
Ok so I've got a bit of a pickle; I've got half of the axle out. I have no other tools to really aid in the rest, could you possibly give me some help with this?
Manual Says 10-13 ft lbs for those three screws. Seems kind of light to me. Great video, thanks
That really seems too light. Thanks for watching Giuseppe!
Did you have to replace the seal on the transmission or did it work fine with the new axle?
It worked fine with the new axle. If it looks worn, I'd replace it. Thanks for watching!
@@2carpros thank you
What size socket and wrench did you use? Going to harbor freight to get these
This was absolutely great!! Thanks for posting. New subbie.
+jeffking29 we are glad you liked it, we try to made the best automotive repair videos on the web!
Any ideas as to why I can't get the control arm to separate from the brake assembly? Multiple videos including this one show it separating with ease but mine is glued tight.
Probably stuck together with corrosion or rust. Use a penetrating fluid like WD-40 and try hitting it with a soft blow hammer.
any help, when i pull the axle, was already broken,so the part who got the knuckles is stuck at the part who's attached to the engine....
I have a cracked cv axel boot, it's on my 06 Altima 3.5SL. Thanks. I actually haven't replaced the front axle yet. I did get my motor mounts replaced. Gotta save up for the axle.
Are you able to do it yourself? Might save a couple hundred in labor that way. Axles are a fairly easy job. They require a bit of brawn because of the bigger bolts that need to be removed, but its a very straightforward repair.
I would but whatever I work on I just seem to make worse. Also the place I live at doesn't allow any car work done there. It's ok.
Cool thanks
Is this the driver side or passenger?
Would a broken/ snap axle cause a car to not engage in drive, reverse and make a noise from neutral to park. It’s a 2005 Nissan Altima v6 3.5 SE-R. I don’t think it’s valve body
did you find out about this ????
I have half the axle out. The inner part is just stuck inside the transmission. What do I do?
Was trying to change the axel on the drivers side, it does not have bolts on it, i can't seem to remove it, tried hitting it with a crowbar & hammer, but couldn't get it off, any suggestions why?
Just keep at it, they can really be stuck!
What size hut is the axle nut.
That song, sound like all gonna be easy.
Nice video, helped me out a lot.👍
Glad to hear it!
@ 3:17 "Next the axle should remove with ease" LOL!!
I gave up after an hour of whacking at it and removed the carrier bracket. Even with the bracket + axle removed from the car it still took several whacks and a pry bar to separate the two.
*****
The bracket is connected to engine block. I had to use a series of U joints to get to the bolts because the exhaust is in the way.

I tried to pull out the axle but it came apart where the bolts secure it at.
what is the name of the part that the 3 bolts connects the axle to
Flange.
And for nonprofessionals always use a torque wrench, specs are in the manual
Mines leaking, when I replace it will it stop leaking or will it continue to leak?
You probably need a new seal in the transmission where the CV axle inserts
the axle looks the same as my 2005 murano, same procedure?
It will be really similar if not the same. Thank you so much for watching!
2CarPros if I take it off from the strut mount bolts instead of the a arm will it affect My alignment
thanks this is exactly what i needed
Thanks for watching!
Thank you Lane for your question. For further help with this go to ruclips.net/video/vOVpWpXsJfk/видео.html
Would have been nice it you told us the size of the socket
would've been nice if you figured it out yourself
Is there a huge difference with a 2007 Altima?
It is most likely really similar! Thank you for watching!
Different subframe. That job would probably be easier
what did you torque the axle nut to
its in the manual
you have one awesome Channel
Thank you so much Walter!
my axle isn't removing with ease, what should i do?
I can say this difficulty level raises when your doing it on the ground and 20 years have passed. He just pulled that thing out I had to beat the shit out of it to get it out lol
Torque the axle nut to 202 lb, on 2002-2006 Nissan Altima v6
How do you know when you have to replace the axle?
ABRAHAM RANE if you hear a clunking sound when you turn or corner the vehicle then that’s it.
thanks this video was great and I was done with project quick
j barron Great to hear please subscribe if you haven't already.
Is this the same as a 2004 maxima?
+Eddie de La Rosa It might looks a little different but it is still the same process.
+2CarPros ok cool thanks

When this happened to me the hub bearing ended up being broken
Anyone having trouble with finding Axel seal to fit a 2002 nissian Sentra 2.5 please advise needed
Try NAPA, if they don't have it you will have to order it from Nissan.
I have a 2006 Altima, those 3 bolts don't exist... ?
+Joseph McCarthy hmm,, it must be a mid year change because this one had the three bolts.
I finished the change already, the video was still very helpful in the process.
Once I realized there was a slight difference I just had to do it a tad different.
what the axel nut size?
is 1 1/4
i'm subbed - you guys are awesome.
Thank you so much for subbing and watching!
I thought you supposed to use a ball joint press because of lower control arm is made out of aluminum beating on it you could cause damage but I see you did differently.
You can use one, but this works too and is easier. Thanks for watching!
My guess would be that Larry Burgess had a seized brake caliper. Kept his wheel from spinning and his axle continued to spinning.
This just happened to me lol, broke both my CV's :(
you say nice and tight, but would you happen to know the torque specs by any chance?
Gracias por su video amigo
what size socket is that for the axle nut?
1 1/4
Anthony Garcia on a 05 Altima 2.5 4L it was a 32. When I bought a replacement axle it came with a 35 nut tho
YOU CANNOT SAY WHAT SIZE TOOLS YOU USED ? IS THAT HARD?
No need to be upset. The way we were doing videos back then there would be months between recording and editing so the sizes would get lost to time. The way we do it now is much better. You can always use trial and error. Thanks for watching!
for future reference, the axle DOES NOT remove with ease...
+Brendan Leary ya they can be pretty tight.
What if the Axel is seized in the shaft don’t be fooled you’ll be lucky if it’s that east
I replaced mine and there is now shaking when I accelerate
Sounds like either the flange bolts weren't tightened in a star pattern or the lugs weren't tightened in a star pattern. Thanks for watching!
Y is he using wire cutters on a cotter pin. He should be using neddle nose plires
Cutters can get a good grip and then you can cut the extra tangs off. Thanks for watching!
@@2carpros thank u was still a great video
Thank you
Thanks for watching Nathan!
Would be better if you would of called out the size of the sockets
The new stuff does. Thank you for your suggestion and for watching!
Fix thermostat 2002 thermostat
Replacing castle nuts with plain hex ones and putting cotter pins back in makes no sense.
perfect,sr thanyou
Thanks for watching!
thanks
Thank you so much for watching!

You did not say any sizes
the video is perfect but la musica wuac tormenteme jajaja bye
that's a maxima not altima dummy
jose Reyes yea definitely is a maxima, I thought I was tripping seeing things I had to look at the title and rewind the video like 3 times. Altimas don’t have axel nuts when you take the tire off🤨
passenger side is the easy one,now what about the driver side, thats the one im having trouble with.
Music was very annoying
It's gone! Thanks for watching!
Lose the music...video is great but this tune is awful
