Betamax had less colour bleeding and sharper lines than VHS, that’s why it was my preferred choice.

Now this is the thing when people debate VHS vs Beta, I totally agree - especially on older units, the colour reproduction is just so much more stable with Betamax and the overall definition just was sharper.

Hi. I have one of these, which is cosmetically even better than this one. The only problem with mine is a broken gear on the front loading mechanism & unusually, it’s the front gear of the three. Seems a shame it won’t work just because of this, I’d love to get it going. Thought of buying a non working machine to swap the parts but eBay prices are ridiculously high for basically scrap machines. Does anyone know where I could source replacement gears? I see 3D printed ones from the USA but they only seem to be for the later version of the 711B chassis & don’t look the same. It’d be great to save another Betamax! Another great video Alex, looking forward to the C7 part 3 on Wednesday. Rob.

I have an almost-complete front loading mechanism from an SL-T30, same chassis. Can you somehow point out which gear are you looking for? I am in Greece. Not sure if that's an issue or not.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I don’t seem to be able to upload a photo on here. There are three gears the same diameter & the broken one on my C40 is the front one with the arm behind it. Hard to explain without a photo. I’m not familiar with with the SL-T30, is that a European model? Regards, Rob.

@@robertlloyd-jones4310 It's a multi system model intended for the Middle East. PALsite has info about it. I scrapped mine because it had many major issues but I didn't throw away any of the parts and I've already used parts to fix other machines three times. I think I know what gear you are referring to. I'll have a look.

@@robertlloyd-jones4310 I just pulled it out of the storage and had a look at the gears. The right-hand-side arm for the cassette carriage has a gear attached to it via a spring, and there's also another gear on top of that. I am assuming that's the one you need?

Hi. Yes that sounds like the one I need. Would’ve been much easier if I could’ve uploaded a photo. Not sure how I’d get it from you?? Thanks

SONY SL-C44PS is a special version for West Germany with PAL/SECAM II and linear stereo (BNR). It even has one less circuit board. I have them as a linear stereo addition to the SL-HF950ES Super ß HiFi Recorders when they're all running at some point😉

Linear stereo VCR: two channels of the same crappy sound quality. How could it not have been apealing to buyers?

2 tracks of AM radio as Dave (12voltvids) says. :)

Too right although it was as good a linear audio got and with a TV with a rubbish speaker it was probably pretty good! Having a SLO1700 does really highlight the differences though!
