      That's so cool. I can really see why you love these machines - they are truly something else and almost organic in their function.

      @@MrBetaByte In 1980, using vcr was a crime in Iran. At that time, all our memories were of sneaky use of this model Betamax.Bittersweet memories

    This is an amazing and high quality machine, extremely easy to work on and ultra reliable with an excellent picture which puts newer VCRs to shame.
    Also the switches on the circuit boards on the left and right will need deoxidising.
    I sold a fully refurbished and boxed one not too long ago, it's on my channel.

      I must take a look at your channel! Good tip on the side panel switches. It really is a great machine and very much a Betamax collectors dream machine.

    I've never come across this particular Sony model with the mechanical piano keys, just the Sanyo VTC-9300 in both silver and black finishes. According to PAL Site the Sanyo came out in the same year as this Sony - 1978.

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  3 месяца назад +1

      I do really want to feature a Sanyo VTC-9300 - would be really interesting to compare the two machines side by side. Both machines were available in the UK in 1978 but the Sony was released in Japan in 1976 as far as I know although I know the first consumer release for NTSC markets was a combo TV/ VCR unit.

    Another superb video Alex! I have an SL 8000 & 8080, it’s certainly given me some great pointers as to what I can do to improve performance & reliability. The fact that you showed a couple of mistakes really helps show that it is a machine that lends itself to working on & quite forgiving of the odd faux pas. The mechanism is primitive in comparison to later machines but very elegant in operation & well worth the effort. The SL8000 was my first video recorder & it’s the best for nostalgia. Cheers, Rob.

      Thanks Rob, glad you enjoyed it and much more SL8000 content to come too with (hopefully!) a bit of a deep-dive too.

    The SL-8000 an SL-8080 Betamax (AEP/PAL colour system ) where the first Sony videorecorders i serviced for Sony NL. Tought about 30 Kg weight. Too heavy to steal 😊. Massive mechanical construction. Only thing to replace videohead, upperdrum and audiohead assy and sometimes the idler. There was a kit-part with several mechanical parts in it. That was early '80, 40 years ago. This one should be an a Sony Museum for the rest of its life. 😂 Those orange parts are Delay Lines modules. Those leaves (copper blades) switches are very clean. Love that timer/clock display is glass. Serviced after that SLC5,C6,C7,AG7, C9e,C9es,AG90,SLF1e(ACF1e/TT-F1e/NPF1) C2X,C3X,C4X,C80,F3X,F60,F90,HF100xx,HF150es,HF950es.

      Vacuum Fluorescent Display modules are ALWAYS made from glass. They're a type of vacuum tube.

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  3 месяца назад +1

      They are great machines given their age. They weigh 19.2KG as from the Sony service manual. Yes, I really should have said the orange units were delay lines - will do better in the future. I do love the glass VFD displays - so much better than LED to look at. You have some very great knowledge servicing all those machines back in the day - I really wish I'd had the chance to also work on them although I am now!

    guaranteed to: give you a good ol hernia, test or fail your shelf.
    one thing not in its favour nowadays it that is has no picture search function meaning you're going by the tape counter to find a particular section or just watching the tape in real tape.

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  3 месяца назад

      So very true! At 19.2KG it's a hefty piece of kit! (Just checked the manual for the all-up weight!). Yes, definitely a first gen Betamax with no trick or picture search.

    Will the electrica aerosol cleaner effect the tyres and belts? I've never had it effect the plastic parts before.
    Will it be OK to use the electrical cleaner on the audio head?

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  Месяц назад

      Yes - only isopropyl for the ACE head and I wouldn't use it on tyres or belts, isopropyl or rubber renew (if idlers are slipping).

    I have a Toshiba V-5250B which is an exact clone of this model. Brand new to this stuff, unfortunately I have a really bad picture - almost like you had but significantly worse. Tried cleaning the heads but i suspect they're done for. 😢

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  2 месяца назад

      That's really cool - not seen the Toshiba clone. There can be head switching issues with these (much like in this video with this machine) but the heads do get quite a bit of wear in these. Is the upper drum shiney? That's usually a good clue as to whether the heads are worn. Also, have a look at the head chips themselves - do they look intact with a clearly defined gap in the centre?

    • @DanielButtery
      @DanielButtery 2 месяца назад

      @@MrBetaByte You can very definitely see the tape path on the upper drum, just assumed it was designed to be 'slicker'. Yeah heads visibly look alright, but then what do I know!
      Great vid by the way - liked and subscribed ;)

    does s video have better picture quality than scart on my vhs

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  2 месяца назад

      Maybe - depends on what your plugging in. S-Video will be better than straight composite and if S-Video in on SCART then yes, it'll be better.

    Hi, love your videos. I have an SL 8080UB (dark grey and black). when I power it on the timer light wort stop flashing. Any ideas

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  Месяц назад +1

      Thank you 😊 The fast flashing timer lamp should go out once the clock has been set - it's just warning that it's lost all it's settings due to a power cut. Hope that helps.
