Ello Tosh, I have a Toshiba Beta... V8600 Betamax - or two... Making 1 good (ish!) machine out of 2.

This is the model my dad ended up buying in the early 80s after a lot of consideration and comparing the technical aspects of several machines. Of course we didn’t have it long before we noticed the Beta section of the video store shrinking rapidly to make way for VHS tapes!

Really great machines and a great choice for the time but as you say they soon started to become more and more redundant. Strangely enough, where I used to live was s mall town with very little in the way of video rental shops as such so people were happy to buy a Beta as they were cheaper and made great recordings from the TV. I serviced machines I sold back then right in the late 90s.

Just picked up a V-8000c. Seems tapes load and thread around the video head. However, both playback and rew and ff do not seem to be moving the tape at all. You seem to have a great knowledge of these machines, so where would be the first area to look into with this issue? Thanks from the Great White North !

First place I'd look are the belts under the deck - there should be one that goes from the bottom of the head drum to the idler drive pulley and these usually are the first to either stretch or break. The capstan belts also commonly turn to goo on these too. Good luck and let us know how you get on. 😊👍

@@MrBetaByte Yes sir, you are correct. The belts are a mess under there. Would you happen to know a source for replacement belts? Thank you !

The upper drum are really worn like all Toshiba VTR of this period.
Need re-surfacing for a better, fast, and steady rewind.

How do you resurface the upper drum? Have tried a few methods but never had much success...

@@MrBetaByte Use the blue side of a Pelikan BR 40, to restore the worn surface, don't rub too much just to remove the mirroring surface. After this clean the drum well first with compress air, and alcohool. When install relapping the drum with a donor tape.

Unfortunately I don't. Belt kits can be found on eBay but not seen any of the four-head disks for the V8600 since the late 80's.

@@MrBetaByte I didn't know that the four-heads disk are so weird, the only form is taking from other V8600 very damaged by with the four-heads disc correct, but too are weirds these vcrs
