Must say, when they were current, I’d’ve been instantly put off by the Amstrad brand, following my experience of shoddy equipment they marketed, though I dare say many own brand machines were identical under the skin. Great to see your repair videos back, always entertaining & as I’ve said before, I love your warts & all approach, really like to see the whole journey. 👍👍👍
Hey "Rubinho" Barrichello was in 1st on that F1 race but problably did let Schummy pass him for winning the race. Great tape so much memories this one evocated .tks
@MrBetaByte from what I remember it was a very fussy machine. Liked to play tapes recorded on the machine but didn't like tapes recorded from another vcr. The tracking circuit on it was pretty pants. Occasionally liked to chew tapes too 😆
Very nice VCR! OEM seems to be FUNAI. The deck reminds me on the Shintom-deck. There a similar deck with more belts on the underside - you mentioned it in the video - unfortunatelly, this is prone of failing (crumbling) gears!
I had the Amstrad Fidelity model from 1989, similar to this. Every TDK I used to insert used to crinkle at the bottom, which was annoying. As a ten year old, it was a relief to have had a new video to replace our Akai VS-5, cos that was prone to breakdowns. Pausing on the Amstrad produce a noisy snowy backdrop, pausing tapes recorded elsewhere were much better, with a reduced height of snow - and playback of other people's tapes were always a lot richer. I should have known it was Funai. Throughout my teens I used to open the lid to clean the heads (almost religiously) and I recognise that Funai microchip on the right. I was happy to let it die about ten years later, I learned to hate it when I discovered the "What Video" magazine at about 1993/4, which was my bible for home entertainment gear.
The old Shintom mechanism, variants of which were in a lot of machines including some Sonys for a while. Fundamentally they were very solid, reliable units (although they had their faults), but Funai ditched Shintom in the early 1990s and moved production to China, and Shintom faded away after that.
I had a Amstrad with a remote that can read tv programs by reading the barcodes from TV listings. The only problem is that it will crinkle the bottom edge of the tape. I had the pinch roller replaced, but after a short while, it will start doing it again.
I almost only repair devices that are good enough to be digitized. Now you can guess what I actually wanted to write before Google coincidence translated.
