Mark Knopfler: “I think it’s fantastic recognition, it’s really cool to be in the Hall of Fame. The thing I objected to was being told how it was all going to be done. ‘You’re going to do this, then you’re going to do these interviews.’ I thought, ‘No, I’m not.’ It wasn’t my way of going about doing something like that.” www.thetimes.co.uk/article/mark-knopfler-interview-the-dire-straits-frontman-on-his-new-album-down-the-road-wherever-s9993qtdb
There's another guy named Robert Smith we all know is sort of shy. In Mexico 2008 he appeared at a Latin MTV award, media let him feel awkward so he said "I did it fo the fans, but these are not the things I like and I've confirmed it". And when RRHOF inducted The Cure there's a famous meme regarding he's not comfortable with the way he was being interviewed...and in the acceptance speech he was very polite, he performed awesome but he (and the NIN guy that said a marvelous speech too) used other words to confirm what he said in 2008. To me that's true humbleness. I wished Mark Knopfler could have tolerated the protocol or what he didn't like of being a star...maybe he doesn't need ceremonies but for the fans and for his fellows who really deserved a moment of greatness after all those years.
John Isley is a magnificent bass bass player and by all accounts a very decent man. Let’s not forget the excellent contribution made by the excellent Hal Lindes.
I have met these guys and I have to say these 3 are some of the loveliest and most talented musicians I have ever met . Mark is obviously a creative master but everyone plays their part ...Congratulations and well deserved .
Long overdue, wish the Knopfler brothers had shown up for a reunion set, but you can’t win em all I guess. Long live all the members of this fantastic band - thank you for inspiring me to pursue music
I love this man, as musician and as single, humble and integral person. Very few musicians know to lead their careers with integrity and retire with dignity. May be Mark never left. Anyway he will die feet in boots, having complied with dignity. I wish you long life and lots of music, Mark. From Spain.
It's such a shame that such a great, classic essential rock band has been recognized late and compared to rap. It's like a guy being picked up at last. Mark doesn't wanna look like a dumbass out here. To be honest Dire straits and sir knopfler has changed my life. The band that really maked me feel how much music can be so important to your life :) thank you so much mark and the whole dire straits band.
@@lynnepashley4281 Thanks. The guy who introduced Dire Straits to me swore that his name should be writen "Marc" because of his "Polish" father. Well, it turns out none of that is true. We were kids by then, there was no internet, I had no books, nor did I have money to spend on music. This friend of mine was already a die-hard fan, so I trusted him. I suppose he was just trying to impress me, or perhaps it was his dreamy subconscious way of passing me the idea that not everybody could grasp the greatness of Mark's music. You know, you could get away with all sorts of nonsense in the early 80's. He was right about the music though, and I'm grateful that he shared his passion with me. I'm not sure why I keep writing "Marc" now. Maybe I'm holding onto those fine memories. :)
Mark listened to the greats who came before him, most of whom regret attending their own inductions. Congrats to Mark for standing with the world of rock in not recognizing these wannabes trying to establish themselves as an actual hall of fame. Who cares who this company puts in their museum? It’s not an honour and no one cares what they think. It’s a meaningless privately owned and operated tourist business without the credibility, background or knowledge to assume authority of an actual hall of fame for rock n roll. They are a small group of journalists and investors. None of their opinions matter to anyone who knows music, in particular the bands they induct. As Jack Black said in School of Rock, it’s about sticking it to the man. This museum is the man - they are profiteers cashing in on other people’s work that they neither understand or appreciate. And congrats to Steve Miller for his honest speech. He spoke for everything sacred in rock when he humiliated this company.
Exactly. Fan vote would have some validation. Peer vote would be as good or even better. But these self-appointed guys and their private selection means nothing to anyone who has a clue. I believe it was Lennon or Dylan who said even if there were 500 voters deciding who was to be inducted in a real rock hall of fame, no one at the Cleveland museum would qualify to cast one of those votes.
The acceptance speech is edited. John said something along the lines of “since nobody’s inducting us I guess I will induct ourselves”. Guess the RRHOF didn’t pick someone to induct them due to Mark Knopfler’s diss. Anyway, great to have this awesome band in the HOF.
I agree with all the comments about Mark making a stand against this arguably farcical award. That said, his bandmates, most of them his lifelong friends, who have dedicated their lives to the Straits, wanted him to be there. John Illsley asked him several times to make an appearance and play. If only for them, he should have made the effort. On this occasion it isn't all about him.
I tend to agree. I'm not mad at his decision, but it would have been cool for them to get a proper induction, if not for his band, do it for the fans. This is my favourite band and it would have been awesome to watch him play or watch people play his songs in tribute to him.
Love Mark Knopfler. Maybe he was sending a message to the Rock & Roll HOF... They, whoever they are, who makes the decisions, waited all these years for The Moody Blues and Dire Straits, but crap rap and no-talent "names" get in without paying their dues what so ever.. RR HOF is a farce, a joke. But Congrats to Dire Straits, you well deserve the recognition, however so sadly delayed..
No presenter for them. Everyone the Hall asked declined because Mark Knopfler was a no show. No tribute performance either. The Hall just gave them their awards, had the members say their speeches and leave. It's a disgrace.
NO MARK...NO DIRE STRAITS...NO AWARD in my mind. My respect for the R+R HOF has recently dropped alot. I mean, some of the recent nominees ( no names mentioned) never EARNED being chosen through Years of struggle.
The brothers Knopfler and Pick snubbed the event but could have easily been featured on film to recieve their awards. John , ever the trooper showed up as did Alan and Guy. All a bit flat really.
Good for Mark not to show because of the arrogance of the rock hall. However, it woulda been incredible to see Mark, David, Pick and John on stage once more. To me those four will always be Dire Straits-those 1st three albums are incredible. Past that...well I personally get bored.

I'm not sure I agree with you or not. But I understand. Perhaps he has his reasons to be a recluse. I do not know. But, like you, I think it is difficult to swallow as a long time fan. Also, he's brother was not there, who was an instrumental part of the band in the inception. Strange. The music will live on certainly, and I do think they are vastly under rated, as I have heard them all and love Dire Straits more than most. Shame he wasn' t there.
mark and david knoffler do not get on and are not speaking terms and have been on speaking terms for a very long time. david knoffler said many years ago in a documentary that mark was a domineering control freak. who ended up pushing him out of the band. so david knoffler and another founding member of dire straits who also found mark knopfler too controlling formed new version of dire straits. who play the first couple of albums.
What a load of crap their careers and the music they created are their achievement. A gold record says more than TRARHF. Who knows his reasons for not going? Was it wrong of Marlon Brando to refuse his Oscar does that make him less of an actor?
Mark Knopfler’s reason for staying away is self-indulgent and selfish. The fans want to see him and without the fans he’d be nowhere. He at least owed them this night.

Bullshit, this isn't just about him, it's also about the rest of the band.

Yes, its pathetic. Dire Straits should have been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 20 years ago.
sveiinnordal exactly Sir
They should be inducted after the release of the album "Brothers In Arms" some 34 years ago.
Matt Ma yeah but at that time the group had like 9 years after their first album, not 25
Why ???? Don't needed. They are best in 100 years
The most beautiful a d great band
To see the original classic Straits line up reform and play again would be magic. Problem is that the material would only span the first two albums.
Grande banda de todos os tempos:)
No Mark Knopfler, NO Dire Straits.
Yes that right
About freaking time
Increíble k knoopfler no kisiera ir ceremonia todo lo k es se lo debe a este grupo
Thanks for posting!
no Pick Withers? No David Knopfler?
Mining Music yes and no mark k, it really was a dire turnout.
If Chris Rea had joined the band all those years ago they would have been named Dire Rea.....so you dodged a bullet there 😕
@@robbiekop7 Ho ho ho! That's awesome! Mark would have chewed that name a bit "Dire Rea?", No man, I think we better stick with Straits 😂👌

Totally agree!
You named the two bands I so wanted to see in the R&R HoF. And they both got inducted at the same time. And both deserved to be in long before this.
Totally agreed
It's a shame how the Rock Hall treated Dire Straits during the ceremony

Es la vida de mark knopfler dedicada a la música 🎶
The collective wisdom of the commenters here underwriting my assumption that MK had his reasons....
Should have happened years ago.
Mark: So generous, he couldn't be bothered to turn up.
He aint going to be ordered about by some arrogant group of organisors, he a first class English man and deserves a lot more respect.
Sad David wasn’t there with his band. He still the forgotten one…
