Get some solder paste, lol. If you learn to apply the right quantity of paste for the pad and pin size then you can even be sloppy with application and most the time it will perfectly align with the pads when the paste flows.
Tip for the hot glue: if you want a really good bond: cut of a small amount of hot glue, place it where you want to melt it and use your hot air station to melt it (medium temp, low airflow). You bonding will be amazing and it saves you on waiting for it get hot…

Awesome build man! Personally, I dislike having a lot of the modern QoL features on an iPod, just because it no longer feels like an iPod, if that makes sense? One thing to watch out for by removing the iPod cable connector, you lose the ability to connect to the FireWire charger to "boost" iPods into recovery mode. Although you can restore functionality with more modding, which primarily involves the cable instead of the iPod.
It has been a while since I modified an iPod, but I believe places sell (or sold) thicker backs specifically designed for the large battery mods. Also, one reason why I went with an older iPod in the first place was actually that it lacked Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. I wanted a device for music at work and I wasn't allowed to have anything with wireless connectivity. The older iPods worked great for that... after swapping the hard drive. The one thing that I wish I could change? Better software for the iPod. I'm pretty sure I looked at RockBox, but I can't remember why I didn't use it in the end. I do recall that my main complaint was the difference between album handling between the iPod and iOS. I think it has to do with there being two Artist tags used for music files where one is more geared toward specifics for a song (e.g., listing a featured artist) and the other is the generic artist (i.e., whose album it is). If I recall, the iPod has no support for the latter, which meant that it kept separating anything with "Artist ft. Other Artist" as separate from "Artist".
Time to dig out my old iPod 5th gen I got... Christmas 2005 - a gift from my first post-college employer. Black as well. Not a fan of the full clear shell you have on this, but I definitely like the storage swap since the full-size iPods still relied on an HDD - the newly-introduced iPod Nano relied on flash storage. The USB type-C swap, though, is definitely needed, too, since compatible charging cables are getting harder to find. Though your other mods took the iPod 5th gen and made it the thickness of the iPod 1st gen.
@@thomgizziz I have a Plex media server and use the Plex app on my phone via a self-hosted VPN. It's served my wife and I well on road trips since I first set that up.
I have a 160 GB (6th gen?) iPod classic I bought new back in January 2013. Still in working order, with the original battery, with no visible leaking or swelling. Not yet, anyway. Haven't gotten around to modding it and the only changes I'm comfortable to safely attempt are a battery replacement and switching the HDD for an SD or microSD adapter board. I have installed rockbox on it. In fact, you should be able to dual boot rockbox and the native iPod OS on several iPod models, and switch between them by keeping certain buttons pressed during the startup of the device. I decided to keep both because the original iPod OS has a simpler, cleaner, smoother interface, but rockbox was the only way I could find to bypass the loud volume limitation enforced on iPods sold in the EU at the time. I could replace the circuit board with one harvested from an iPod made for the US (or at least non EU) market but I want to keep as much of it original as possible. Alternatively, according to some google searches, I could replace certain chips on the circuit board with ones harvested from non EU boards, but I lack both the hardware and the skill to perform such a feat at this time.
Why would you do all that when you can just buy a cheap mp3 player. Even then I don't get the point of any of this when Spotify exists. It's so cheap it's basically free and I get a way better OS for my music. And it's already with me. Tell me your nerd that doesn't get laid without telling me.
Fucking hell, the EU sucks balls with their restrictions on everything... Australia is literally the best mix of American freedoms and European protections...
@@thatguy6214 - because you can. That's just it. The iPod Classic feels classy and nice. It was peak MP3 for pure audio functionality. And this is voodoo imagination territory but I *feel* like my studio In-Ears sounded a lot better when I tried my old Classic compared to my phone and especially with adapter on the iPad.
@@thatguy6214 Short answer would be nostalgia. Long answer... I had several Sony mp3 players and iPods growing up in the 2000s. The 160GB iPod classic was the last dedicated music player I purchased. It's a solid and good sounding device, still working in its original state almost 12 years later. I won't bother with current cheap mp3 players which don't sound as good and most likely won't even last half as long. I switched to streaming in 2015 with Apple music because it was the first service to become available in my country. Then around 2018 I switched to Spotify and Tidal and still use both to this day. I'm not keeping the iPod alive to be my main music player. It's a hobby. I do it because I feel it would be a shame to let it die. It keeps me connected to simpler times, and it brings back good memories the handful of times every year when I pull it out of the drawer to listen to a few songs.
@ZacBuilds when you want clear parts, you can use toothpaste to polish the small scratches on plastics and some resins because toothpaste is: 1. Easy to wipe off, 2. Smells good, 3. Slightly abrasive, and 4. Great for polishing!!
Except if you listen to tons of music and over thousands of artists Spotify can provide that. I wish Spotify made a physical MP3 or something. I know they did that car thing but that failed and it wasn’t really a music device
I love this! Such an inspiration! I've always missed my iPod Classic 160 GB, its got a couple of broken sectors which makes syncing and listening beyond those sectors impossible. I'm buying a tool kit and soldering iron to start practicing. :)
I love projects like this. Actual effort and sharing with comunity. Not some indian guy who made "200% efficient 3 phase inverter out of only 3 transistors and 3 resistors that energy compnies dont want you to see" or 2-3 AliExpress blocks wired together with some plugs and thrown in a plastic box.
Replacing the nostalgic cold feeling of the stainless steel back and adding the bluetooth in my opinion is a crime to the essence of these childhood gems. It feels wrong. I'm also against the transparent everything trend going on but oh well. Completely changing the premium feeling of cold solid steel is the biggest one.
Nah, steel enclosures look good only at first. Then it turns into a mosaic of scratches and dents pretty quickly. Especially on a device that will be your pocket. It's the same as with piano black finishes. Looks good in promo photos, but turns to crap the instant you turn your back.
@AmartharDrakestone there are etching chemicals to add a frosted finish to metals, you can laminate the housing to keep the durability of stainless steel while avoiding permanent scratches, some people appreciate the patina/scratches/wear and tear that occurs naturally. Or, and hear me out on this one, you take good care of things that you want to keep! Especially something that reminds you of good memories.
Oh man, I STILL remember my old Video iPod and eventually switching up to a color iPhone. I don’t think I still have it-or it’s in storage somewhere-but I loved that thing. This was an exciting project for sure.

LTT Sponsor is crazy work
Now that is a proper shrek pod there
Awesome build man!
I love it, all the extra functionality is awesome! That said, with the difficulty I'm not trying this anytime soon 😂 respect, that's some great work.
8:01 Dude, you have the Patience of Buddha putting that Haptic feedback thing.😭 I would of complained and told the sellers to give me a New one.💀
Wow, you are so talented your skills are off the scale, I really enjoyed your video, what a fantastic outcome !
Though your other mods took the iPod 5th gen and made it the thickness of the iPod 1st gen.
or just put your mp3s on your phone...
@@thomgizziz I have a Plex media server and use the Plex app on my phone via a self-hosted VPN. It's served my wife and I well on road trips since I first set that up.
@@thomgizziz or just host navidrome or any other music server yourself...

I LOVE transparent electronics. This is amazing.
Nice, I still have mine too! (Original battery too, still holding a good charge) :)
My iPod is one of my most treasured possessions and I still use it constantly. It's way better than Spotify.
2:41 "weird white residue" 💀
This was amazing to watch 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Micro soldering blows my mind, great skills!
Got a good recommendation after this

I built an Ultrawide DS ... a DIY Steam Deck thingy. /@MarcinPlaza
Very nice project. One last thing is missing: wireless charging...
Dude, you and Doug DeMuro need to do a video together ASAP. Glad I stumbled onto these videos, but the two of you would be magic, RUclips magic.
Now you need to have dankpods review it.
I hate the clear jailhouse plastic but love the mod.
19:31 i haven't seen a shout out to a certain spacial someone......
I'll never agree that transparent electronics look good, but I do love the mods! Well done
wait until he hears about phones
You just Frankenstein that ipod. The best build OG devices with modern tech.
The combination hold switch/bluetooth pairing button is so perfect and elegant, love it!
Theseus just called, he wants his ship back.
Fantastic comment, internet person.
Oh man, I STILL remember my old Video iPod and eventually switching up to a color iPhone. I don’t think I still have it-or it’s in storage somewhere-but I loved that thing. This was an exciting project for sure.
I had a Zune... 🤣
Definitely recommend, if youre using hot air, to do that BEFORE installing the usbc connector. its super easy to melt the plastic otherwise
you built an mp3 player, congrats lol
Next, do Zune. It would be absolutely amazing to see new Zune mods after all these years
This is probably the most in depth ipod mod I've ever seen!
This is the conformation I needed to do this work to my ipod classic. This is legit perfect.
Man, your videos are more and more inspiring!
Love the LTT segway. Although didnt linus take a lil step back a while ago. I dont care it still promotes him and his name, which he truely deserves. Also love this guy, good job.....
Love collecting iPod Videos. Make great gifts for family too if you buy “for parts” and get cheap wins. Got so many of these for $20 and all they needed was a new battery.
Very interesting, when I first saw this video I thought "man I would love to do everything here if only iTunes wasn't such a hassle" but then you showed the alternative OS and that speech on music freedom. I agree with everything and congratulate you for inspiring me and other people to do the same
Loved the LTT sponsor segue, brilliant.
Tossing the old cable was the most satisfying part of the video
Holy s.. this is amazing! You really cranked your design and prod skills way beyond 11 on this one
