Concering the size, that is one of the things I like about the iPod that you have. Due to its size it is easier to hold and use. Many smaller players are difficult to hold and use due to their size.
@@Isaac-OS I have a Sony Walkman Digital Audio Player (DAP). I'd like to see Sony come out with an affordable* Walkman DAP that is about the size of an iPod like yours. The extra space would contain a large battery, which would give it 2 to 3 days of playing time on a full change even if you listen continually. That would be great! *Sony has released a Walkman DAP that is fairly large (about the size of two iPod Classics set side to side) but it is extremely expensive (>$1,000). To me, the size of the iPod Classic is a perfect size for your hand.
I've been using youtube over spotify due to smaller creators I watch being scared to publish their covers of older songs. Finding out the iPod 7th gen has a modifeable drive and bluetooth adapters exist for them has me excited to pick one up
whaaaat I had no idea! Are you talking about the ipod nano or the classic? Either way I know you can't go wrong with both of them. I'm sure youre going to love having one!
It’s always funny people blame the phone for what an apps you installed is the blame. Going to the iPod looks good but the reality is most modern portable devices are running android. No the key for a better music experience is to find an application that suits you. And I don’t mean a streaming app but really a music player like the good old days. Okay we don’t have the past glory of Winamp on mobile but I’m sure you can found something that can play your files without trying to distract you or sell you things. Also the iPod is a nice audio objet.
Also I was a big listener of Spotify. I was listening 10h per days on they platform but their service lets make me go crazy with each year that pass. How could I said all those UI change, track that get pull out without a sniff or the trend of auto smart recommendations that arrange spotify money cost. All those things make me want to go back to the old era of local files. And you know what ? I did ! I created from my soul’s whats I truly wanted ! I make an application that run on every platform where you put your musics and just listen to your music shared across all your devices ! A kind of iTunes but with streaming capabilities of Spotify. And it’s great, I own my music and I have no fear of change since the change is me ! I will not mention the name of my music app since it’s not an ad (okay it’s free and open source but anyway). I just wanted to share here my relationship with this subject.
you're absolutely right, the sound quality is LEAGUES ahead of the streaming services... and I totally didn't even consider the battery that makes sense as to why mine feels like a brick LOL
Great choice pickup the 5th gen, nice sound signature and easy to mod... another gem is 4th gen, but the downside is the body is bulky and the parts inside is old
2:25 i have never been reminded to how young some of these children are .. what tf do you mean you just spam through songs..? like what does that even mean, you just hit play and choose whether or not to shuffle - that's it, it's just music 🤯 and here's me listening to full albums on tape, my own one-of-one made tapes
when it comes to newer releases i usually tend to listen to the album fully of course, and try to digest whatever the artist is trying to make as a whole. But when it comes to listening on the fly and when im out and about i usually play a lot of songs on shuffle or will find specific individual songs i want to listen to. Sometimes ill throw on an album but i dont do that every time!
Id recommend installing Rockbox, upgrading the battery, and moving to flash storage. U can also install or buy prebuilt bluetooth mods, although some of the mods lose access to the lock switch functionality so theres a downside unfortunately.
@Isaac-OS I forgot to mention, but theres some other amazing mods u can do such as usb c mod (loses access to 30pin output ofc incase u have a speaker for the ipod like I do), and wireless charging. Both require soldering skills though. The community is still growing, and Ive been watching it grow for many years and its amazing. Rockbox supports custom plugins, so if ur good with coding, u can even create stuff like ur own "spotify wrapped" but for the ipod.
i almost didnt listen to music i wanted an ipod classic but it was expensive so i got a cheap bluetooth mp3 player from aliexpress with 32 gb of sd card storage
Great video! I totally agree with the trend of splitting up functions. Honestly, I hate the trend of removing headphone jacks from good smartphones. Like whats the point of getting a 1000+ USD phone if you cannot even use it with your headphones (dongles just increase the wear and tear on the port). Personally, I daily drive a cheap xiaomi as my music player. Its got everything : a decent headphone jack, bluetooth, sd card slot and a relatively open hardware stack that lets me flash whatever rom I wish. Plus, the crazy af battery life, and no distractions (too underpowered to run bloatware lol).
I miss headphone jacks so much as well. I just found my Grandma's old iPhone 6s and it has a headphone jack and if the battery life wasn't so terrible I would swap from my 13 that i currently use today. Buying a xiaomi was a really great idea, how long does the battery last in your experience?
@Isaac-OS lasts quite a bit for a smartphone (around 3-4 days, with around 5 hours of use everyday). Do note that it is not my primary phone tho, because it doesn't have everything (camera is meh, processor is just powerful enough for basic tasks (no gaming lol) and the phone itself is made out of plastic)
My primary phone is a 2nd hand s22u that I use for texting, calling, and photography purposes. The SD8 gen 1 variant is super underrated for its price to perf ratio. Only thing missing : a headphone jack 💀
@@theprotester5171 damnnnnn sounds like a good setup tho. have you considered running with an extra point and shoot camera as well or do u prefer using smartphones for ur camera
@@Isaac-OS nah, p&s cameras have mostly been superseded by smartphone cameras that are less tedious to carry around. DSLRs are still worth it, but again the heft. Therefore I prefer smartphone cameras instead.
Did this last summer and I also modded it a bit. Changed the old drive for a micro sd card. the extra space made it possible to add a much larger battery (it'll last you weeks). You do need to install a modded OS for this to work as well but it's easy peasy (plus you're able to reinstall the old games that way). Personally i love its chunkiness and weight. Just feels good in hand. The audio quality also sounds better on this model than other ipods To add, hated paying for a subscription that doesn't pay the artist properly. Instead I'm happy to use the iTunes store and I've been buying (slowly but surely) the songs I actually do love :)
@@Isaac-OS not really tbh! I think the most ive struggled was opening the ipod in the first place. Aside from that it's very straight forward, there's a ton of tutorials on youtube. This does mean spending some money for the extra battery, the sd card and the sd card reader thought. I dont regret any of it!
I would not say 6 or 7th gen ipod classic. Thebinterface maxbe looks better but there is a cap of what memory size can be but inside. And most see the classic 5 the best becausr it sound better because 6 andb7 classic has other components like dac that is a bit badder then the 5
@@-Gothicgirl- Thats wrong don’t listen to them. The 6 yes but the 7th gen shares the same audio pieces from the 5th gen as they brought it back. Theres a memory cap but thats obvious and you’re more likely to not ever reach that memory limit. I have over 5000 songs on mine and its barely full.
@@vvx600 the 5 and 7 can handle more then 128gb memory. 6th has a limit through the ata driver. But songs are limited on the database that only can handle a specific number of songs. And i get 128gb full wenn i but my music from over 20 years listening on it. I think your info about the dac is wrong. 5th gen has wolfson dac and 6 and 7 have samsung soc with the dac from cirrus öogic
@ i’ve been looking into it and mainly just hear about 5 and 7 sharing the same dac or soc. I do think though 7th or 5th are the best way to go. Like i think if we’re really saying one iPod is better than the other all the classics are considered inferior because the Touch is better and supports other formats. I own a 5th and 4th but just can’t enjoy them bc the OS isn’t soley focused on Music.
I get the whole iPod thing, I've never stopped using a seperate device just for music. But I will not use an Apple product, it's personnel thing. But there are still plenty of players being made that play all the music formats out there and you won't have to mod anything like that iPod. They range from around 100.00 to way to expensive (like thousands of dollars) but the sound quality is really good. Look at iBasso, Shanling, Cowon, Cayin, Hiby, Astell & Kern, Sony, xDuoo and more. Also, plenty of in ears that sound even better than those Apple things. You can get some around 20.00 and up with replacable cables. Do a little research and you find more than you could ever bargin for that will fit the type of sound you prefer.
I get that, and I don't disagree with you, as I can totally see why you wouldn't want to use an apple product. The way I see it, I am saving this old device from a landfill. I installed rockbox, another software, so mine doesn't run an apple OS. But yeah, definitely many options out there!
4:37 honestly i would go for the thin model of that same ipod. Mostly bc it has the same form factor, it slips right into my watchpocket, and theyre easily reparable, and once a nano gets a problem its near impossible to repair
@@Isaac-OS yea, i think a lot of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen nanos still have good longevity but the newer designs even have problems where the battery will expand and push against and warp the display. So yea the normal models are pretty much king bc of how easy to repair and even mod they are, i have 256 gigs in my 5th gen and it dosent take too much prowess
Dude, get a custom iPod classic! I got one from etsy with a Flash drive 256GB (up to 1TB available) and a bigger battery. The battery lasts way than a week. Mine is blue with a red click wheel and is engraved on the rear. Some even put Bluetooth in. If you like your chunky 60GB iPod you'll love a custom one.
@@Isaac-OS, @Isaac-OS , the guy I bought mine from etsy was PlayerMods. I see he now even has a USB-C option, althought it's pricey. They suggest SD cards instead of SSDs, cause they need less power. There's also Elite Obsolete Electronics with their own site. I tried to open my first iPod classic 7th gen myself and I broke it. Now I have 256GB, cause I have a lot of audio books. Dank Pods tried a 4x micro SD adapter to use 4 TB, but couldn't get it running. 4x 512GB worked with effort. But iTunes only can handle 50,000 tracks. I tried RockBox (or so) once, cause it's supposed to be better and can run more file types, but nah, not worth it. Also you may wanna upgrade your headphones a little. I have some from GK which is a company from KZ with confusing naming schemes, but great prices. I invested 55 bucks and it blew me away. And I can change the cable if it brakes. Some prefer the DAC of the 5th gen over 7th gen, but that's personal. I remember vacation in Scottland 2016 and someone put their cheap mp3 Player in the AUX in (when cars still had that) and it sounded like garbage. I put mine in and it sounded great. 😅
if you use the stock OS for the ipod the sd card makes it soooo much faster, however if you use Rockbox custom OS it will struggle a bit sometimes but it does that whether or not you are using the stock hard drive or a hard drive replacement.
@@Isaac-OS if you do switch to rockbox make sure all of your album art for your songs u put onto the ipod are 368x368 because it will be very slow when trying to play the songs if it has to load a bigger jpeg than that lol
thank you! That's also a great way for offline listening to be honest. It's most likely more practical and allows for multiple options of listening to your music.
I myself have a Microsoft Zune 30gb (Yes, I own a Zune), and it's my regular driver whenever I go on long trips or cleaning around the house, or doing other things. And I've ripped a lot of CDs using Windows Media Player to fill in metadata. And I love having an independent MP3 player instead of using my phone.
@@Isaac-OS IKR? Honestly, I love my Zune, and am glad to be a part of the Zune subreddit also (as they have a lot of users who have collected them and a whole lot of Zune related items. And I will continue to use my Zune (and I will eventually replace the hard drive with an SSD and continue to replace the battery from it's use). I never knew when I bought mine from a yard sale for $5 back in 2012 that I would become loyal to the Zune (even though I use an Apple iPad).
Not meant to be a dig, but do you find any benefits to having the iPod classic vs just loading the music directly onto your iPhone using iTunes or Finder, and only using the built-in music app with just your offline library and not Apple Music? Also, does it have Bluetooth? Most of my headphones are wireless. I am interested in going this route, but unsure if the benefits outweigh the cost
I think just having a Spotify subscription and carefully picking your library and downloading the music for offline use makes more sense then carrying around another device.
@@billwilliams4247 Very true. @Isaac-OS opening most model is fairly easy just pry open the screen and couple screws and others are super pain sometimes not even possible or worth. alot of the used iPod nanos have bloated batteries already which sometimes causes the screen to bend which also could mean LCD might need to also be replaced. When I replaced the battery on mine there was some battery acid on the motherboard which I had to clean up and within couple years its already showed signs of puffing up again. iPod Classics or bigger models or maybe the iPod Shuffle are better choice imo.
I'm actually thinking of buying an ipod for the fact that these subscriptions make it feel like it's mandatory I listen to something or else i'm paying for no reason.
yeah the subscription model has been frustrating for the music apps, i can understand other services being a paid monthly thing but sometimes these subscriptions for music specifically make me question a lot of what i pay for

this was an amazing first video! great job :)
thank you so much!
Concering the size, that is one of the things I like about the iPod that you have. Due to its size it is easier to hold and use. Many smaller players are difficult to hold and use due to their size.
yeah the size makes it more comfortable for sure!
To Modify are only the ipod classic and ipod minis.
All other can only replace the battery and memory is not tho change
Most underrated channel on RUclips as of now
I appreciate you thank you 🫶🏻
It’s always funny people blame the phone for what an apps you installed is the blame.
Don’t forget about the sound quality, way better than any streaming. Also it’s probably super heavy cause of the new expanded battery
you're absolutely right, the sound quality is LEAGUES ahead of the streaming services... and I totally didn't even consider the battery that makes sense as to why mine feels like a brick LOL
Your intro I can relate to. Things are too damn complex nowadays.
Gotta jump through hoops just to listen to some music
Great choice pickup the 5th gen, nice sound signature and easy to mod...
another gem is 4th gen, but the downside is the body is bulky and the parts inside is old
yeah i think the 5th is the easiest to open the back up correct? would love to get into modding later down the line
He's making a mix tape.
2:25 i have never been reminded to how young some of these children are .. what tf do you mean you just spam through songs..? like what does that even mean, you just hit play and choose whether or not to shuffle - that's it, it's just music 🤯
and here's me listening to full albums on tape, my own one-of-one made tapes
when it comes to newer releases i usually tend to listen to the album fully of course, and try to digest whatever the artist is trying to make as a whole. But when it comes to listening on the fly and when im out and about i usually play a lot of songs on shuffle or will find specific individual songs i want to listen to. Sometimes ill throw on an album but i dont do that every time!
Turtle!? I loved your rlcs casting!
bro how did you find me over here 😂
@@Isaac-OS I thought I was going crazy when I recognized your face 😂 Great vid ❤
I've heard replacing the HDD with flash memory makes it a lot lighter!
that's a great idea, ill take a look! i do know these ones are easier to mod for sure
I think it would also extend the playing time on a charge since there's no hard drive that needs to spin.
I really liked this video. Kerp it going!
thank you so much for watching it!
Id recommend installing Rockbox, upgrading the battery, and moving to flash storage. U can also install or buy prebuilt bluetooth mods, although some of the mods lose access to the lock switch functionality so theres a downside unfortunately.
Great suggestions thank you 🙏🏻
@Isaac-OS I forgot to mention, but theres some other amazing mods u can do such as usb c mod (loses access to 30pin output ofc incase u have a speaker for the ipod like I do), and wireless charging. Both require soldering skills though.
The community is still growing, and Ive been watching it grow for many years and its amazing.
Rockbox supports custom plugins, so if ur good with coding, u can even create stuff like ur own "spotify wrapped" but for the ipod.
i almost didnt listen to music i wanted an ipod classic but it was expensive so i got a cheap bluetooth mp3 player from aliexpress with 32 gb of sd card storage
those are sick as well! honestly they all do the same, i think even some 3rd party mp3 players are better than ipods!
love your videos i dont know why you dont have more subs youre cool
With the growing hype imagine Apple going for a completely different consumer target and release a 2025 version
Good luck with the channel
thank you so much! a newer ipod would go crazy
If you drive an old car, you can also go back to CDs.
@@seb5945 CDs sound sooo much better as well!
I think someone should design a more modern approach to this, while still keeping that simple music only device idea.
there's some on amazon but they don't really scratch the same itch for sure
Just bought a 3rd gen. Looking forward to loading up some tracks and playing them at the gym and on walks with the dog.
Yooo nice! Let me know how it goes and if you end up using it consistently !
@@Isaac-OS will do. 👍
The audio quality also sounds better on this model than other ipods
To add, hated paying for a subscription that doesn't pay the artist properly. Instead I'm happy to use the iTunes store and I've been buying (slowly but surely) the songs I actually do love :)
daaang i never heard about adding the modded battery. That sounds super interesting, was the modding process difficult?
@@Isaac-OS not really tbh! I think the most ive struggled was opening the ipod in the first place. Aside from that it's very straight forward, there's a ton of tutorials on youtube. This does mean spending some money for the extra battery, the sd card and the sd card reader thought. I dont regret any of it!
How's buying music on iTunes? Are you able to download purchased music off iTunes to put on other devices?
Depending on the music you like , Bandcamp is good
The guy is in the future.
NAH THATS YOU BRO
Hey, I personally recommend getting a 6th or 7th gen. I use one as my main and they're slimmer and easy to bring
@@vvx600 yeah I recently just saw a posting about their dimensions and they look soooo much nicer to carry around. Thanks for the suggestion 🙏🏻
Which types of audio formats does the iPod play? I have a lot of FLACS and opus and m4as files
From my knowledge and research it plays FLACS and m4as but I’m not sure about the opus
Yeah there’s some great options out there!
Dang I didn’t know that about the nanos. Maybe that’s why I see a lot of people buying the newer thin models!
I have seen so many cool custom firmware options for ipod classics... i think ill dive down the rabbit hole! thanks so much for the suggestion!
So im carrying my S23FE, RG35XXSP and now an Ipod 5.5 lol
Ayyy that’s a fire EDC
@@Isaac-OS yessir
if you use the stock OS for the ipod the sd card makes it soooo much faster, however if you use Rockbox custom OS it will struggle a bit sometimes but it does that whether or not you are using the stock hard drive or a hard drive replacement.
thats good to know i remember thinking that the ipod honestly was quite slow when loading songs
@@Isaac-OS if you do switch to rockbox make sure all of your album art for your songs u put onto the ipod are 368x368 because it will be very slow when trying to play the songs if it has to load a bigger jpeg than that lol
Good luck with the channel! I am thinking of getting a cheap phone with a 3.5mm jack just for downloaded music.
My family had a zune!! Those go hard too
@@Isaac-OS IKR? Honestly, I love my Zune, and am glad to be a part of the Zune subreddit also (as they have a lot of users who have collected them and a whole lot of Zune related items. And I will continue to use my Zune (and I will eventually replace the hard drive with an SSD and continue to replace the battery from it's use). I never knew when I bought mine from a yard sale for $5 back in 2012 that I would become loyal to the Zune (even though I use an Apple iPad).
iPod was a cool thing
one day theyll bring it back i swear

I kinda wanna get an Ipod too

Not meant to be a dig, but do you find any benefits to having the iPod classic vs just loading the music directly onto your iPhone using iTunes or Finder, and only using the built-in music app with just your offline library and not Apple Music?
Also, does it have Bluetooth? Most of my headphones are wireless. I am interested in going this route, but unsure if the benefits outweigh the cost
I think just having a Spotify subscription and carefully picking your library and downloading the music for offline use makes more sense then carrying around another device.
@@billwilliams4247 Very true. But what I ended up doing was I installed Linux on an old computer that I already owned, ripped my CD collection onto it, then set up Plex to host my own music library to all of my devices, similar to how Spotify works, but it's self-hosted and only for myself. Then when I want new music, I'll just go out, buy the CD or buy the album from a site that still sells 24-bit FLAC files. Because I don't pay a subscription and my server is self-hosted, there's no ads, and I'm left with enough money saved to buy new music when I want to add it

@@billwilliams4247 That's a good point! What I’ve done is set up my own system to host my music library. I ripped my CDs to an old computer I already owned, and now I can stream my collection to all my devices, which works like a personal music streaming app. This way, I avoid subscription fees, ads, and still get all the benefits that you could get with an iPod. Plus, the money I save lets me buy new albums whenever I want to expand my collection
for me when it comes to using my iphone as my music player with itunes or the music app, it definitely is more convenient but I run into a lot more problems because I'm still using my iPhone! Lots more distractions, as well as for the music app on my iPhone there is still different sections of the app that are being advertised to me to play other songs or different ones in my collection. It kinda gets messy after a while and while it's easier, I do find the experience on the iPod to be more enjoyable and personal.
the classic is very chonky, i personally have my dad's old 2g nano that i refurbished, it works very well! (if ur buying one keep the black spot in mind though) and if you're carrying your phone with the ipod... maybe keep the phone in another pocket or a bag instead? i've started doing that, and it also helped me lower my phone usage a lot
That’s an awesome suggestion. Do you have any good bag recommendations by chance? I can’t seem to find a good everyday bag
@ uhh well I personally just use either my coat pocket for my phone while keeping my iPod in my pants pocket, or I use my backpack to keep my phone. don't really know much better cuz I'm usually with a backpack or no bag at all😅
5:08 16gb is more closer to 4000+ song
yeah for mp3 you're 100% correct I think I was estimating for FLAC format files which tend to run larger in file size

DONT get the iPod Nanos the battery gets bloated easily over time.
ive heard about their battery life not being the best... are they easy to replace if the battery goes?
@Isaac-OS opening most model is fairly easy just pry open the screen and couple screws and others are super pain sometimes not even possible or worth. alot of the used iPod nanos have bloated batteries already which sometimes causes the screen to bend which also could mean LCD might need to also be replaced. When I replaced the battery on mine there was some battery acid on the motherboard which I had to clean up and within couple years its already showed signs of puffing up again. iPod Classics or bigger models or maybe the iPod Shuffle are better choice imo.
. God , they cant even CARRY a tiny ipod
its pretty chunky tho 😂
