He was inimitable. He took the electric guitar farther than any other musician ever. Plus he surrounded himself with amazing musicians and appreciated them all. Jimmy was very gracious and clearly ecstatic that Jeff was receiving this honor. Must have amazed them both, remembering their early times as boys. And Jimmy's comments to the question about bands trying to succeed today - really, it's a whole other world. When Jeff and Jimmy came up, rock was the big new deal and they were at the forefront of a genre (rock!) that had a massive international audience. Now rock is a niche, much diminished in sales a concert draws, and fading as is the oldest of the Boomers. It's difficult to see a rock band achieving such widespread success today. Sadly.

Back in the very early 80s I was bartending in a place called Houlihans on Bourbon Street in New Orleans and a guy comes and sits down at the bar and wants to know where the locals go to hear good music , instead of the tourist traps. I was getting off work in around 20 minutes and would be happy to give him the locals tour . Off we went to Maxwells and other local hangouts for a good portion of the night. Way in to the wee hours of the night we made our way back to where we had started . He thanked me for a memorable evening of good booze and good music and I thanked him for letting a nobody like me be his tour guide. The guys name was Jimmy Page , yes that Jimmy Page.

@@braxtonvalentine1375 When musicians are distinct and individually excellent you can't compare them. It then comes down to the personal taste of those judging them. And anyone with any sense knows that you can't argue over personal tastes. Listening to morons screaming at each other over who's the best guitarist just makes me walk away in dismay. They don't even consider the different music genres in which gifted guitarists perform.

Amazing to think 3 guitarists of their calibre grew up within 15 miles of each other, at the same moment in time . Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton.
Debates about who is the best is immaterial to me, its what they achieved and who they influenced. At a moment in time all of them were the best.
Jeff Beck came across as a a very humble person whose talent could allow him to be a complete jerk but he never did. He just played the guitar like no one else.

Had never even been in a band!... No slugging it out for years in dingy dives... no obstacles whatsoever? Gets invited straight up on stage with the Allman Brothers as a "complete unknown!" And from there...straight to the top of the pile! Incredible back story I'm sure.... Would make a great movie! But would it be an "honest" movie?
