@@AndrewSowerby It could be, but it shouldn't be IMO. What's the point of inducting any band remotely close to the genre by stretching the definition as much as possible? All it does is dilute the importance of what is already a highly criticized and disliked award, and prevents archetypal "rock" artists from being recognized.
@@sebastianelytron8450 Of course it's not literally rock and roll, but this award only started in '83, a good 20 years after the greats of that genre were done. It's poorly named, that's all. For me, I'm just happy when great artists get recognition, and I thought that Radiohead and The Cure were both very deserving of it. They're rock bands, but they're not in any way straight-jacketed. All awards that are decided by a small number of "experts" tend to be controversial, and they deserve criticism, be it any of the Nobel prizes, the Booker, the Oscars (especially the Oscars, lol), or this one.
This was a really thoughtful speech. You can tell it meant a lot to him to give it and it is hard to think of someone more fitting to have done it. Simply fantastic!
When he says that Robert is so genuine and authentic.... so true. Despite what would initially appear to be a flamboyant, elaborated stage look with big hair and makeup, he just stayed true to his artistic persona from day one, making stage Robert Smith undistinguishable from "real life" Robert Smith. He's just what he is in and out of the show, no pretending, no poses, and certainly not giving a shit what anybody would ever think!
Trent Reznor= f'n coolest guy on the planet. He got extra cooler for me ever since I found out a couple of years ago that he loves Depeche Mode, the Cure and Bauhaus, three of my absolute faves. So happy he inducted one of my fave bands in the world!!! Congrats!!!!!!! It's about f'n time 🙄🙄🙄
How could he not love those bands? They really formed the foundation of the industrial side of NIN. I’d be more confused if he hated those bands and had the sound he had.
That is the awesomest, most genuine hall of fame speech I've ever heard. The dude loves the Cure and is very fair in his evaluation of the hall of fame. hahaha. But he is so genuine and his speech makes you love the band even more. They intelligently picked Trent for the job. A hero of mine praising another hero of mine. This warms my heart. The dude gets at the heart of what music does for people, THEN explains how The Cure does it excellently.
100% agree. Mr. Reznor is so intelligent and so f'n smart. Articulate and genuine. So happy the honor was bestowed on him to induct this magnificent, wonderful and unique band.
8:49 damn, what a mic drop moment! I feel like trent has seen centuries come and go, eras begin and end, a timeless individuum yet never out of date, my favourite person in music.
This speech is so classy & professional. A very sharp & spontaneous one that is devoid of millennial ticks that include "I'm like, it's like, they were like, he's like... like, like..." The Cure band is a legend, Trent Reznor is a professional vessel that conveyed pure class speech in inducting the band in the Hall of Fame.
Actually the people cheering are Cure fans that perhaps also happen to be NIN fans. People that buy tickets to that event go to see the bands inducted not the speakers.
Cure fan since 1980. Born and raised in a small town in montana, left when I was 18 to So California. To see the world and experience it. Long story short, saw Robert Smith in a small Cafe by himself in Hollywood , right before kiss me, kiss me,kiss me, was released in late 1986, I walked up to him shyley introduced myself told him I was big fan of him and his music, he looked at me and said "you got fag?" I looked at him perplexed and said "a fag?" He Replied to me" Aww cack, a cigarette!" I said I only have clove cigarettes, he smiled and said " does it taste good with a pint?". I said " oh yeah it does!!!!" Sat with him for almost 2 hours!! Talking about just life and music. Of the 3 things in my life that always will matter to me,as now iam 53. That was one of them! He signed my 5 dollar bill. To which i have kept in my wallet since 1986!! the cure.. like everyone else, for me, I got through tough times in life. As I would gladly to it over again! Oh, and Robert, as I said back in 1986, you make a impact on people, you may not know it now but later you will see! Thank you for being a you! Was good to meet you again in 1996. Slain'te Mr. Smith and thanks for the decades of your influence to me and ALL your fans worldwide!! You have always been a slice of "just like Heaven" to me!
Your story of humility made me shed a tear of joy for my fellow brothers & sisters on this crazy third rock from our sun... All of my very best to you for the rest of your years!!
That was a very moving speech. Those of us who were young adults in the late 70s and early 80s know exactly what Trent was talking about when he described his time of discovery.
Val Miller Haha.. In all honesty, though, I believe DM were eligible a year after The Cure was... which was like, 2004 or so for The Cure, and 2005 for DM.. at least I’m pretty sure.
He was Siouxsie and the Banshees lead guitar long before the cure. First time I saw SATB, I remember thinking "that guy on the guitar has serious talent, he'll go his own way"

Thank you Trent, you made it for all of us, older, younger and many others to come. Historical. Can't wait to see NIN live again and The Cure of course.
Two of my favourite men in my musical history 🔊😍🕪 The Cure gave me my adolecense, Nine Inch Nails gave me my girl balls 👍 I love you both and can't thank either of you enough 💕 When is Siouxie's turn?!
Same here, the Cure was my first favorite band, the door to the world of New Wave… and then I discovered NIN and the harder style… I wish Trent had mentioned Smith’s work with Siouxsie!
The Cure is so iconic and so meaningful to me. Being a teenager in the 90s was pretty special. When I discovered the Cure and others like NIN, Pixies, Tori Amos, Sonic Youth, Ministry, etc, it changed my life.
I don't know when you started to follow the Cures, but you can't say that NINs are like Cures the music of the Cure will have no equal, lately Murphy and Trent, have made covers of Cure, of Joy division, and also, Clan of ximox, to honor the first real Tac. however the comparison does not stand up, the Cure will remain present from 78 with their music, to the eternity, I NIN, they are a music that will take the disks, to the others, who will come, good luck, it is a terrible experience, in the sense good of the word
I love both, Nine Inch Nails and the Cure. And to learned that, Trent Reznor of NIN actually loves the band "Cure..." I just couldn't be anymore happier BEYOND words... Trent Reznor, I LO💖E you FORE💝ERMORE than ever, now...!
Such an amazing speech, Trent! I loved what you said about the music making you feel connected. I'm so glad you got the honor of inducting such inspirations.
So true! Like TR, I started listening to them with “Head on the Door” in ‘85. Everyone else was listening to all their bubble-gum pop and spandex/big-hair metal bands. I was definitely an outsider who listened to bands like The Cure, The Smiths, Joy Division/New Order, DM, etc. Actually, I’m still kind of an outsider, still can’t stand today’s top-40 garbage, and I still think Madonna was/is overrated while Aimee Mann didn’t get enough recognition-I guess Aimee didn’t dance around on stage in her bra, so she wasn’t worth recognizing in the ‘80s... but I digress.
I just watched The Cure last night at Wembley, they were wonderful - and Robert Smith so engaged & chatty with the crowd. I grew up & still live in Crawley, so the band are legendary here, I had hoped that they would live up to the hype and oh wow they sure did ❤ as Trent says, beautiful sad poignant angry and joyful, so unique and they make you feel not so alone in the world! X
Yeah. They immediately had an impact on me too. 'A Forest' was my first Cure track, so lonely and melancholic and beautiful. Really thoughtful and articulate speech from Trent. Honoured them beautifully.
Nice to see him stepping back into the light we need him more now THAN EVER his skill at the top of his game, come on Trent you’ve made a difference but we need your influence now the most, please make the most of it!
Dead Doll now he has mastered this skill, but can you imagine 1994 Trent attempting the same ? He would have ended up yelling « I fucking love the fucking Cure » and running around smashing furniture 😂
Trent Reznors iq given the type of music he makes and the fact that he's literally a one man legendary band 👌 is like in the world of martial arts Chuck Norris 🇺🇸 status. Hes probably beyond smart and words are more simple sounds then what he's used to recording and memorizing kudoz 🍻
"It was like this music was written for me. I've struggled my whole life feeling like I don't fit in or belong anywhere... kind of like right now.... and hearing this, suddenly I felt connected and no longer quite so alone in the world." I'm in a retrospective of my teenage life... there's a reason he was practically an idol. It shows even to this day. Goosebumps Trent!
Spoken by a man I jammed with on stage in Santa Cruz and a man who he speaks of who honored my late fiancé. It’s a beautiful thing ! Two giants honoring one another! Peace Christo 👽🐕🎶🛸
The amount of love and respect I have for you Trent cannot be put into words! You’re my hero! I truly mean that! Because no one, I mean no one ever on earth understands me like your music does. I get tears in my eyes when I read your lyrics and how much I understand and can relate to them. You will always be my favorite band forever and always, NIN ♥️
I’ve never seen Robert Smith smile so much!!! The Cure will always be my number one!!! They are even better live!!! Trent Reznor is an amazing artist as well. NIN was my very first concert in the mid 90s with the hurt album. 🩷

@@sebastianelytron8450 only if you take a very narrow view of what musical forms rock and roll encompasses. It's a lot more diverse than you think.
Depeche Mode made it!
I've never seen Trent so moved... Love them both :)
Nadia Z. - La Lettrice Solitaria amazing picture :-)
He's pretty moved too when he talks about synths.
Yea he's sold out sounds like a cliche all of a sudden
This was a really thoughtful speech. You can tell it meant a lot to him to give it and it is hard to think of someone more fitting to have done it. Simply fantastic!
Yeah and those idiots in the crowd wouldn't shut up
What a beautiful tribute from Trent. He was deeply moved by the Cure you can see.
It's about f'n time 🙄🙄🙄
and Johnny Cash...forever linked in the wonderful realm of music
@@kilgoretrout3966
Indeed!!!!
How could he not love those bands? They really formed the foundation of the industrial side of NIN. I’d be more confused if he hated those bands and had the sound he had.
Flood, if you read the album credits and things you will see the name Flood on Depeche Mode, The Cure, and Nine Inch Nails albums.
That's well stated and honest.✌
100% agree.
That made me chuckle… but can I add .. ‘ I’m dead’ or ‘I died’. The queens English is slowly becoming eroded.
This audience needs to realize this is a speech by Trent Reznor, not a concert by Nine Inch Nails. Quiet and listen!
Actually the people cheering are Cure fans that perhaps also happen to be NIN fans. People that buy tickets to that event go to see the bands inducted not the speakers.
@@Carlos-xz3vi What are you talking about? That doesn't address a single thing I said.
I don't think they can hear you. And if they did - I'm sure they wouldn't care.
You can't contain the Rock n' Roll, man.
Let people enjoy things in their own way... if you want everybody just to be quiet go to church or school.
@Maribel Castellanos yup you can have it. I have things from him that I would rather keep!!
@Maribel Castellanos probably a signed by robert smith restraining order against that ass
Your story of humility made me shed a tear of joy for my fellow brothers & sisters on this crazy third rock from our sun...
All of my very best to you for the rest of your years!!
My... that was beautiful...
That was a very moving speech. Those of us who were young adults in the late 70s and early 80s know exactly what Trent was talking about when he described his time of discovery.
I was born in the 2000s but I completely agree with what he says
Thanks Trent, very cool.
I'm speechless. What a Trent's brilliant speech, what a legendary band!
Rock on!
It's great that they acknowledged the old band members too
I'm really glad to see the Cure made it in, but what happened to Depeche Mode?
EXACTLY!!! SO TRUE!!!
100%
And joy division and new order
Val Miller Haha.. In all honesty, though, I believe DM were eligible a year after The Cure was... which was like, 2004 or so for The Cure, and 2005 for DM.. at least I’m pretty sure.
@@nikolademitri731 Agree ! And I want a speech from Trent too (He has posted a beautiful message last year on the Depeche Mode's Facebook page).
Wonder who will induct Trent when he’s inducted.
Marilyn Manson hehe
Peter Murphy would be my vote.
Fred Durst
Pee-Wee Herman
Peter Murphy or Gary Numan.
I've watched this speech several times, and it still makes me tear up. Trent did a fantastic job, for a fantastic band.
Here in 24 and been listening since the 80s absolutely legendary band, music would not be the poorer without the cure ❤
Congrats to The Cure! A huge fan since 1981. Disintegration will always be my top favorite album, all the albums were excellent!
Before Goth was Goth! Robert Smith is Iron Clad, what I listened to in middle school! AWESOME!!!
Before Robert met Siouxsie and stole her wig.
He was Siouxsie and the Banshees lead guitar long before the cure. First time I saw SATB, I remember thinking "that guy on the guitar has serious talent, he'll go his own way"
Would have been great if more musically informed ladies were as abundant when i was a lad.
Glendola M. Dennison Hey babe you're so hot you make me crave a tuna melt. How about it?
@@guitarofdestiny- What's a tuna melt, and thanks for the complement! I just turned 45 on January 1st, and your words are like warm rays of soft healing emotions. 💜🥰
2004 Marilyn Manson presented The Cure for MTV Icons
2019 Trent Reznor presents The Cure for Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
2001 MTV Pimp my Ride: featuring the Cure
I remember when MTV offered "The Cure for your summertime blues."
I doubt Marilyn Manson will be doing much presenting anymore lol
@@patrickcole3850 good lmao
I love this speech so much. I think Trent didn't speak as himself but as a fan just like me and surely millions of others watching this. So accurate words. Thank you Trent, you made it for all of us, older, younger and many others to come. Historical. Can't wait to see NIN live again and The Cure of course.
Alvaro Lugosi beautifully said 👏
I agree wholeheartedly.
Robert and Trent do not need to justify themselves. They were our way of life. True to our condition. Thank you both for what you did for us.
The Cure deserves this so much and more. My all time favorite band and best I've ever seen live.
Some of us grow old more graceful than others. Great speech.
Aw man, I’m so emotional over this speech.
Also just waiting for the day that NIN is inducted.
Would you like Robert Smith to do the induction? :)
Damn Trent speaks the truth. And his experience I think is universal for that moment when one discovers The Cure. It was for me.
This was absolutely beautiful. The admiration Trent has for this band is undeniable. What a gorgeous speech and moment to behold.
The Cure are one of the greatest bands ever. Trent gave one of the best induction speeches I’ve ever heard.
Probably, the best induction for any artist ever made
Respect to NIN - what an awesome speech for a legend, the Cure.
Two of my favourite men in my musical history 🔊😍🕪 The Cure gave me my adolecense, Nine Inch Nails gave me my girl balls 👍 I love you both and can't thank either of you enough 💕
When is Siouxie's turn?!
Yes siouxsie is next hopefully soon
Portishead gave me my “girl balls”. I’m a male, metalworker. 😊☮️❤️
Nails was my adolescence The Cruxshadows gave me the strength to be myself
Same here, the Cure was my first favorite band, the door to the world of New Wave… and then I discovered NIN and the harder style… I wish Trent had mentioned Smith’s work with Siouxsie!
YES SIOUXSIE !!!
Probably one of the most articulate induction speeches of all time! Only Trent could pull this off!
The Cure is so iconic and so meaningful to me. Being a teenager in the 90s was pretty special. When I discovered the Cure and others like NIN, Pixies, Tori Amos, Sonic Youth, Ministry, etc, it changed my life.
AAAAAWWWWW YEEEAAAAAHHHHH. Love both The Cure and NIN
Yep 1988 I was in 6th grade I heard them for the first time. My friends older brother was watching Staring at the Sea video and I feel in love.
NIN and the cure need a collaboration tour
H Starlet p
I don't know when you started to follow the Cures, but you can't
say that NINs are like Cures
the music of the Cure will have no equal, lately Murphy and Trent, have made covers of Cure, of Joy division, and also, Clan of ximox, to honor the first real Tac.
however the comparison does not stand up, the Cure will remain present from 78 with their music, to the eternity, I NIN, they are a music that will take the disks, to the others, who will come, good luck, it is a terrible experience, in the sense good of the word
Beautiful heartfelt speech from Trent Reznor. Just perfect
Trent inducting The Cure. My life is made.
My favorite band of all-time inducted by one of the greatest artists ever.

Trent is the only musician that i listen to when i need to be alone and shut the world out and not feel so alone because he understands
Hello, How Are you doing? It’s nice seeing you here
You deserve the R&R HoF as well, Trent/NIИ!
beautiful speech. It brought me to tears his honesty and admiration for The Cure, one of the best rock bands ever in some many ways....
God I adore him. He seems to really care about being honest with himself and others, and that seems to be very rare.
man, that was a 9:49 speech without any cue cards. I would not have been able to talk for 1 minute
A singer needs to remember so many lyrics to do a 2 hour show, as well as play an instrument. Trent has had plenty of practice doing that.
He was probably reading from a teleprompter.
@@BotNumber13 touche lol
The Cure is the greatest band of all times ! ..a million bands like NIN wouldnt be here without them
"It was like this music was written for me. I've struggled my whole life feeling like I don't fit in or belong anywhere... kind of like right now.... and hearing this, suddenly I felt connected and no longer quite so alone in the world."
I'm in a retrospective of my teenage life... there's a reason he was practically an idol. It shows even to this day. Goosebumps Trent!
Trent Reznor , you are looking really good! A true gentleman 😊 great speech ! LOVE NIN and The Cure forever ! 💜
Spoken by a man I jammed with on stage in Santa Cruz and a man who he speaks of who honored my late fiancé. It’s a beautiful thing ! Two giants honoring one another! Peace Christo 👽🐕🎶🛸

Great induction speech. The cure should be proud to have such a meaningful presentation. Congrats to The Cure and job well done Trent.
Probably the most heartfelt and eloquent expression of fandom I have ever heard. Well done!
Wow. Just wow. What a speech. I'm speechless.
No one in the world could give a better speech for this occasion than Trent.
Now lets get Robert Smith to induct Nine Inch Nails!
Damn, Trent was so awkward on camera 25 years ago but now he has a whole speech!?
Yea horrible to see this happen
Called growing up
Oscar winning Trent Reznor. He is now sufficient.
What a great speech. So many of my emotions and memories of hearing The Cure for the first time were echoed in his words. Great speech Trent.
great speech, he feels like a smart and discerning person so his admiration for them means a lot
One of the best heart felt tributes that I’ve ever heard. Thank you Trent Reznor.. It’s great to have talent recognizing talent, and. soul can sing
This was seriously the greatest speech I have ever heard. Kudos Trent.

This might be the best induction speech ever
Amazing band, timeless songs, great singer. Love ❤ ❤ ❤ The Cure. They So Deserved This!!! NO one Sounds Like The Cure.
The best rewiev ever for the Cure. 110% agree with all he said. The Cure is a gift that we are lucky to enjoy in this epoc
This was the most heartfelt speech, hit me right in the chest. We are so lucky to have come up with our generation of music, The Cure is and will always be magical to me and Trent was the perfect presenter... his words were perfect. The band seemed to like it from what I could tell. Wow... what a great way to start my day.
What a wondeful speech! So descriptive, so detailed and accurate, full of admiration and respect. This guy is talented for this too!
