True. Bowie also touched on 1960s R'nB (the Mannish Boys; his first band, a mod group), folk ("Letter for Hermione", his first award-winning song), space rock ("Space Oddity", his breakout tune), music hall (most of Hunky Dory, considered by many critics his best record), glam rock (Ziggy Stardust & Aladdin Sane periods, when he broke into the mainstream), 1970s soul (his "plastic soul" era, when he moved to New York and recorded the Young Americans album with Luther Vandross), jazz ("Wild is the Wind", a gorgeous ballad on his sleek Station to Station album), garage rock ("Boys Keep Swinging" and much of his work with Iggy Pop on The Idiot record), ambient rock ("Heroes", as well as much of his Low and Lodger albums recorded in Berlin with Brian Eno), funk ("Fashion" and "Ashes to Ashes", his popular dance tunes from the later 1970s), and eventually electronica ("I'm Afraid of Americans" and most of his collaborations with Trent Reznor in the 1990s). Bowie indeed had a wide and eclectic musical palate.

I saw NIN in 2014 and can tell you that it is the best concert I've ever been to, performance and visual effects. I was more hyped to see Soundgarden but when I left I was completely amazed
Everyone gushing over Bowie and Reznor. That parts a given. But lets not forget the third talent in the room: Kurt Loder. I grew up watching the man and his tasteful ways of delivering not only news but memorable interviews such as this. Not sure what hes doing these days, but he was practically the face and voice of MTV throughout the 90s. Seemed like a professional and artists seemed to have a great respect for him.
Kurt Loder was my favorite interviewer on Mtv. Calm, soft spoken, not corny and no interrupting...good questions. When David Bowie spoke, I wanted to hear every word.
R.I.P Bowie. ya know when trent tweeted that something new was coming in 2016 and then bowie came out with his album, I was really hoping that they'd tour again not gonna lie.
+Alexandra A Me too. Bowie/NIN was one of those shows I wish I could have seen, so Bowie/NIN 2.0 was definitely a wishlist show to see. It became bigger and bigger when I started hearing Bowie's new record. :'(
+Geoffrey Williams I was there. Nin played the amazing hits that we knew so well from our well worn cassette tapes. Bowie came out and blew our minds in flowing yellow and white gauze dress and pants and played Outside like he was from another world. Garson at his best, Gail Ann... Ahhh
'I'm Afraid of Americans' is an outstanding track. The Bowie version is amazing, too, but Reznor brings it to a whole new level. Especially if you're already a Nine Inch Nails fan! Their live cover of 'Hurt' is equally amazing, if you've never seen the 'Closure' tour video. I don't know what other media of it exists, but the performance is just stellar.
Absolutely. Trent looks very healthy and youthful for a man who used to punish himself with endless touring and lots of chemicals and everything in between. He also looks pretty content in his own skin these days. I'm glad he finally found some peace in himself. Being young and full of rage can produce some very creative stuff but it can also drag you down and it gets tiresome after a while.
First time I've heard him say how 'fabulous' Gail Ann Dorsey is both a great singer and bass player.'Under Pressure' is the one song I saw her take lead. The tour band will be hard to forget--pure magic.
What I like most about this interview is how Bowie with his charismatic personality transforms the atmosphere to make it completely pleasant to the point that we see a Reznor from the "The Downward Spiral" era smiling, joking and chatting comfortably, all my respects to The Thin White Duke.
wow.... Make me wanna cry, because, they´re all getting older, some of them gone, like God Bowie, so I think who´s gonna make music than, I mean music for us, these people like me who likes not conventional things. But remember to keep searching, keep investigating new sonds, new bands, always with criteria. Ahh please come back
At this time NIN was huge and at the end of the Downward Spiral tour, so most people at the shows were there to see NIN who was opening. They knew half the crowd would leave if there was a break or intermission between the bands. So the way they melded both bands and both performed a few songs together was genius. Hearing Bowie’s vocals on my favorite NIN song Reptile blew me away. Still one of the best concert experiences of my life!!! RIP David Bowie!!!
@@SniffyPoo anyone who leaves while Trent and Bowie are doing a duet of Hurt and Reptile should not have been at the show to begin with!!! It was a their loss for sure!!!
@@WHR17 they left after bowie's solo set w/o Trent started. it was a big NIN crowd, and yeah, today they probably wished they had stayed. It was the only Bowie concert I saw live.
Hard to believe Bowie is no longer physically with us. These two enigmas, in my opinion is what music still needs today. I love seeing Trent containing his fan boy feelings for the camera, but you can see and feel how they both greatly respected and liked one another. Thankful NIN is still around and touring, will appreciate them while I can and grateful for what they both have done. Together and independently❤️✨
I love how Trent is sitting there waiting ever so patiently, looking around and anticipating David's thoughts, as though it were a job interview...hoping David will say, "YES TRENT! You've got the job!"
Strange that Bowie refers to his music as over-layered and textured, whilst referring to Trent as a minimalist, I've always seen Reznor's music as very textured, and over-layered, so much so that I can always hear something new every time I listen. Maybe it's just in context to this collaboration.
I miss his music. When this collab came out I was having my first child and didn’t get a chance to really appreciate this. Lately I have been revisiting Bowie and have become a Nine Inch Nails Fan!!! What took me soooo long.
NIN and Janes' Addiction were two groups the older fans recognized as having their roots squarely in classic and progressive rock, and got the attention of all the musicians at the time. No surprise when Reznor and Bowie teamed up.
Hard not to like seeing these two together-music is the language that they share and respect each other for what they can give to one another-age matters not
I'm so grateful that I got to see that tour. It was my introduction to NIN - they blew my mind, then when they were on stage together with Bowie, it was completely next level, and Bowie's set was phenomenal. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
Well it’s not MTV’s fault that music sucks ass nowadays. I prefer that they just air their shitty realities 24/7 than playing and promoting mumble rap, trap and that kind of garbage.
what’s impressive to me after looking back at that time, Trent shockingly channels David Bowie’s voice in his last EP w/the finishing song “Over And Out”! i definitely think, in retrospect, they helped unintentionally each other in their future solo works.. ah, the memories…
My first concert was the Halloween show (1995) at the Nissan Pavilion with Nine Inch Nails opening for David Bowie. It was so great, it was mind-blowing. R.I.P. David Bowie.
What a great tour! NIN played their show their way. The last song Trent sang was Scary Monsters then Bowie came out to sing Reptile with NIN. After the song ended, seamlessly the stage turned to pastels and Bowie began his set his way. It was one of the best live performances I've ever seen.
RIP David we all will remember you with your amazing voice and music, you did really good the first punk rock band great music and Trent is so talented he is a real star.
I feel myself so lucky to be a real MTV kid growing back at 80s and 90s. I was very little when Ashes to Ashes was 1st broadcasted, and even though I didnt understand it at the time I was mesmerised. Watched all DB's work during the 80s and then the 90s came and all those talented people like NIN, Nirvana, Soundgarden etc. Amazing, unique memories.
5:56 "That was an edit point" - the AMAZING part is that just by noticing and pointing it out, Bowie ensures (perhaps with intent) it will not be cut! THIS IS EXACTLY LIKE THE HEISENBERG UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE, where as soon as you look at something with a photon you can no longer be sure of its location because the photon moved it!
Back when music mattered. I regret not being my age in the mid to late 90’s. I’m too young to truly know it, but the glimpses of that I remember stayed with me and they are fantastic.

Not sure what hes doing these days, but he was practically the face and voice of MTV throughout the 90s. Seemed like a professional and artists seemed to have a great respect for him.
Hell yeah. He's definitely one of my favorites. His voice and delivery always struck
Kurt Loder was my favorite interviewer on Mtv. Calm, soft spoken, not corny and no interrupting...good questions. When David Bowie spoke, I wanted to hear every word.
Kurt was great about that.
and holy shit Trent looks like a kid in this interview whereas Bowie always looked young into his 50's even
Bowie’s about 48 here.
Lmao his vinyl jacket crinkles like a vinyl record
Install a Friend ayy nice puns
He was a walking work of art
Oh god I can't stop hearing every little crackling noise now
Seeing nothing but positive comments about these two amazing men warms my heart.
RIP David Bowie. The Underground will never be the same without its Goblin King.
R.I.P Bowie. ya know when trent tweeted that something new was coming in 2016 and then bowie came out with his album, I was really hoping that they'd tour again not gonna lie.
+Alexandra A That would have been amazing...
Ahhh
Man, why did I have to be born so late that I was too young to attend this fucking powerhouse concert?
(Born in 1989)
'I'm Afraid of Americans' is an outstanding track.
Bowie was in his late 40s here I think. He sure looks good considering all the things he used to indulge in.
You could probably say the same thing about Trent these days.
Kurt Loder was such a great interviewer.
" Who the fuck r you? Kurt fucking Loder??!! Piss off!"
@@jasonpeters9865 What the hell are you even talking about?
@@neilgarvey2201 Lol, clearly u rnt that cool.
It's fr "Dead Man on Campus." 1998 movie.
@@jasonpeters9865 Clearly....
@@neilgarvey2201some random gut quoting a movie most people haven't heard of or remember saying you're not cool. Brilliant
I wish this was a current story and all was well with the world.
Marion Farrell I understand this
pop culture sucks now, thanks to our overlords
3 years from your comment on this rings more poignant than ever, hope yer doing ok
I agree :/
Yeah.....about that.... see it gets much worse in the future!
I love seeing Trent so happy working with David! Trent smiles and laughs more in this interview, than any other one I've watched. :D
He was such a soft spoken, good natured brilliant man! I can't believe Bowie is gone!
Trents all bouncy bless his heart.
I can't even put into words how precious his giddiness was here but I can say that my heart exploded so...
He can hardly contain himself, I'd be the same way 😅
@@RetroAP its so nice to see him like that, for once
@@jessica5497 right!
Yea they probably just got done double teaming a 14 year old that was drugged. There so grear armt they.
Bowies "hurt" with NIN was just magic.
I was in my late 20's when this interview was new. Brings back great memories
He is the coolest guy in the room, even with Trent Reznor there.
First time I've heard him say how 'fabulous' Gail Ann Dorsey is both a great singer and bass player.'Under Pressure' is the one song I saw her take lead. The tour band will be hard to forget--pure magic.
I adore Trent and I miss Bowie so much. They are two musical geniuses and it makes me happy they were friends.
Ahh please come back
Lifesmyth
I feel your pain. Luckily there's new exciting, great talent everywhere these days in the underground, unsigned scene..
RIP David Bowie!!!
the crowd still left even without a break at the show i went to :/
@@SniffyPoo anyone who leaves while Trent and Bowie are doing a duet of Hurt and Reptile should not have been at the show to begin with!!!
Together and independently❤️✨
words cannot explain how much i love these two guys, just listening to them makes me so happy😭 bless their hearts
Was such a thrill back then to see him come back and collab with Reznor and blow everyone out of the water again. Was such a great time.
'He's got a Bowie on his back.'
Aesthetic comment: Trent is an interesting man, David is beautiful. I thought it back then, I still think it now. Real beauty, to me.
both beautiful in their own ways
I love how Trent is sitting there waiting ever so patiently, looking around and anticipating David's thoughts, as though it were a job interview...hoping David will say, "YES TRENT! You've got the job!"
I've never wanted to be a couch more in my life
When you hear David talk about composing and creating music you realize there is so much more to the music we hear and enjoy everyday
Trent just got inducted into the hall of fame
Wish bowie was alive to finally see this moment
Strange that Bowie refers to his music as over-layered and textured, whilst referring to Trent as a minimalist, I've always seen Reznor's music as very textured, and over-layered, so much so that I can always hear something new every time I listen. Maybe it's just in context to this collaboration.
imagine Bowie dressed as Ziggy Stardust while shooting “Afraid of Americans”.
I miss his music. When this collab came out I was having my first child and didn’t get a chance to really appreciate this. Lately I have been revisiting Bowie and have become a Nine Inch Nails Fan!!! What took me soooo long.
I love how they rezonate
I love how the style of one became the style of it all
What an awesome couple of down to earth incredibly creative artists. Really enjoyed this. Miss David! RIP.
They seem like two best friends in middle school. What a once in a lifetime pair of men.
Wow, Trent looks kinda happy! I have never seen him looking like this
NIN and Janes' Addiction were two groups the older fans recognized as having their roots squarely in classic and progressive rock, and got the attention of all the musicians at the time. No surprise when Reznor and Bowie teamed up.
What an awesome interview! both are such professionals!
Hard not to like seeing these two together-music is the language that they share and respect each other for what they can give to one another-age matters not
You don't see Trent smile a lot. So when you do, you treasure that moment...
I'm so grateful that I got to see that tour. It was my introduction to NIN - they blew my mind, then when they were on stage together with Bowie, it was completely next level, and Bowie's set was phenomenal. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
Bowie was truely one of a kind. As a huge NIN fan & a lifelong Bowie fan this interview was pure joy to watch.
... when MTV was cool...
#This
Well it’s not MTV’s fault that music sucks ass nowadays.
“That was an edit point.” OH YOU
Trent and David made a wonderful sound that endures today.. music i turn to to keep me going ..rest in peace David Jones.
My first concert was the Halloween show (1995) at the Nissan Pavilion with Nine Inch Nails opening for David Bowie.
It was so great, it was mind-blowing.
R.I.P. David Bowie.
My first concert w/out family supervision was at Hershey stadium on the same tour!
I met Bowie while working at Clinton Studios (2001)....super polite natural guy with incredible grace. 🤘🔥
Kurt could have been a news anchor for a major stations. He was so good.
Is this before he killed Dumbledore, or after?
Got it now. Its TR that looks Snape. I was wondering how Bowie was in HP.
Lol. I was expecting this comment
Snape looks like Trent dear.
Now it makes sense why there was a song called "Reptile."
You know... there were those those slithery snakey wizards in those books.
I thought he was adam driver for a second when I saw the thumbnail
The meeting of these two geniuses was a gift, let alone them collaborating
"KOOKS"...he referenced the Bowie song that's been in my head for weeks!
So cool to see two geniuses just hanging out!
Kurt Loder, man. Flashback from the past. He was MTV and made those years so memorable.
What a great tour! NIN played their show their way. The last song Trent sang was Scary Monsters then Bowie came out to sing Reptile with NIN. After the song ended, seamlessly the stage turned to pastels and Bowie began his set his way. It was one of the best live performances I've ever seen.
We miss David Bowie !! thanks for sharing !!
Keanu Reeves has to play Trent in a biopic lol
Iuy Yui For many reasons that would work.
hahahah true
But is there a story for it
Love the idea, although he would have to keep out from the sun during at least 3 years to prepare the skin
keanu Reeves ??? Bad actor !!!!
This wasn't that long ago, but it feels like an eternity. Good to see these two together and having a cheerful conversation, though.
I saw this concert it was awesome. The Bowie NIN set was some of the best performances I have seen.
Amazing, unique memories.
man I miss Bowie and that tour was fucking amazing
I must say I am a huge fan of both but I am happy they both developed their own Beautiful music.
My first concert. I was 15! NIn and Bowie….incredible.
TRENT'S SO PRETTYYYYYYYYYYYYY
5:56 "That was an edit point" - the AMAZING part is that just by noticing and pointing it out, Bowie ensures (perhaps with intent) it will not be cut! THIS IS EXACTLY LIKE THE HEISENBERG UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE, where as soon as you look at something with a photon you can no longer be sure of its location because the photon moved it!
Reznor being a fanboi, Bowie bein a boss. Legendary interview.
The sound of Bowie’s jacket haunts this interview
Nice backwards chair vibe, Kurt.
That's funny!
Back when music mattered. I regret not being my age in the mid to late 90’s. I’m too young to truly know it, but the glimpses of that I remember stayed with me and they are fantastic.
