Bowie was just one of those rare people who could quite literally talk about the most mundane, pointless things imaginable and yet be so captivating, so bloody interesting and fascinating, not just because of THAT voice, but his way with words, his diligence and ideas, just make him one of those rare icons. What I love is how freely and effortlessly he talks about his past, these extraordinary events and moments that the most avid fan would pay dearly to hear about, like they were nothing. Then you remember, this was his whole life, just something he went through day by day, he laughs and chuckles about it while we are left jaws gaping, desperately wanting more and he just flows with it. Such a joyous man to listen to, so sad when he passed.
That's so true. Even if he had read the most boring book in this world, it would have been breathtaking and almost everyone would have listened to him. It's an incredible loss. I miss him.....still in 2019. 😞😟😢😭

The thing about being pinned down is brilliant. One can see Bowie's usual habit of becoming too self-aware of what he's saying and then disarming it with humor and self-deprecation. Excellent interview, grateful to see it in full.

It is absurd that a lot of criticism leveled against Bowie back in the day was that he was supposedly "inauthentic/ not a real rock and roller", when in fact he was one of the most genuine, sharing and honest artists.
He could do it in a lot of them. But I don't like how they had to try to tear him apart in some of the other ones. Thank God he didn't give in. He avoided giving answers, tore up interview papers and told people that whatever it was they were wanting to know was his own business. That's a role model. Lol. And thank God he became a better person later on instead of a worse one.
His hair styled him. It's called genetics. Most men, not all, mind you, but most- have suffered massive damage to their follicles after puberty or certainly by their early 20's so that "styling" one's hair is no longer an option

He (the hairdresser) thought they would make the perfect couple, and invited them both to his birthday dinner in 1990. The rest, as they say, is history. By the way, Bowie is famous for his ever changing hair styles and hair color, thanks to his stylist. He even styled the couples' hair for Bowie and Iman's 1992 wedding in Italy.

I loved Bowie's earlier stuff, absolutely hated Diamond Dogs, but you knew that the next album would be completely different again and that you could plug back in. Here he really had a go at explaining those things in his own words, without the interviewer interrupting him much, and it was just fascinating. "Aesthetically promiscuous," I love it! What a mind this man had...

I'm glad MTV news are sharing these interviews. Amazing how they don't look or feel dated at all, and many of these are well over 20 years old now (dang, we're getting old). I guess that's a testament to the man himself really, how in every era, in everything that he was, in everything that he did, David Bowie was (and still is) timeless.

Bowie has long been a (hero?) of mine since I was 13 years old. I initially found him to be both shocking, and curiously astonishing. He seem to have a true artist's heart and lens. Looking up Bowie on RUclips is like visiting a old departed friend or hero. Here it is almost 2020, and I am enjoying his musics and interviews all over again.

And the whole goal of the creative process is to create something as close as possible to what you have in mind. The interesting question for the artist isn't 'why do I have this idea' but rather 'how do I create this idea'.

But it is equally valid and arguably more interesting to focus on the process itself. In that way of working, the artist has no fixed idea of what the outcome will be, and uses aspects of the process- self imposed rules, accidents, chance, collaboration etc- to influence the direction of the work. They may finally shape that into something more intentional, which would be like the painter coming up with a title at the end of the painting, as Bowie mentions, but they didn't set out with a particular result in mind when they began. Bowie himself used various 'experimental' techniques, cut-up lyrics being one, and it seems he took a more process-based approach to his work than an outcome based approach.

Sure certain mediums may lean one way or the other, but as long as you make a good piece of art, the process isn't going to discount that.
You're so right. I had the good fortune to meet him in 1987 and nothing was too much trouble for him. He was friendly, amusing, polite, charming and the most wonderful smile. He was so down to earth and treated you as an equal. I wish I could have spent more time with him, he was a real gentleman, they are few and far between these days. I do wish he hadn't done the drugs and smoking, though.

This poor, sad interviewer. Trotting out the same, tired, old questions. To have access to Bowie's brilliance and not go down those blind alleys with him as he's opening those doors, opting to choose to tread down the same, worn high street instead, is such an incredible waste. Bowie: "I know so many painters who title their works after they've done them, which is a real giveaway." Me: "Why? What does that mean to you? That they don't know what they're doing as they do it but can only tell you after it's done? Same with you as you went through stages of your career?" Interviewer: "Um, yeah. So, your previous characters were very 'white,' and then you played R&B..." No wonder Bowie went into hiding. How unfathomably boring these discussions must have been for him.
I was devastated by the interviewer's follow up question to that. It was exciting to see his eyes and expressions as the thoughts zipped through his brain. I wanted to explore his thoughts to that end... Oh well..
You can also see from his reaction, his expression after that how alienated he felt, at least in this interview. It's a common occurrence for myself when talking to people, they just don't get what I'm talking about, very few do.

I enjoyed this interview... The leading questions were good and Bowie was very forthcoming. HOWEVER the interviewer lacked talent in following up on points Bowie made, he didn't flesh out the stories or dig more into what David said, and he dudnt keep the conversation going. He had a prepared set of questions and thats all he could say. When david would finish talking, there would be an almost awkward silence, instead of the interviewer continuing Davids train of thought...
Better to just shut up and let the other person speak if you don’t think you can add anything of value. Besides I like the fact that the more the interview just let Bowie talk the more we got. If anything the interviewer was fantastic and not making it about them or their ego
It was just a song that he wrote about how he felt about fame. No wonder he wrote it. They treated him like shit and he respected them thoroughly nomatter what. Even if he didn't answer the questions, he respected them. Even Jomathan Ross...that perv. I think he had the hots for Dave and Dave wasn't gonna have it. I think that Ross was just trying to bully him, but eww...nevertheless, Bowie could pick better if he was gonna go down that road.
This is a good interview, but I think the best one of all by far is Bowie in the Studio and ZDTV interview of 1999, which you can also find on youtube. It is absolutely amazing -- his humor, charm, wit and intellect come through like I've never seen anyplace else. Plus the last 10 minutes show the process of how he records a song in a studio, which is fascinating.

He was a trailblazer for many worlds .His early ventures into bisexuality . Must of helped so much for many people. Bringing it into mainstream media and helping people to know who they are . Also helping families and friends of LGBTQ+ people. Was lucky to see him live in the nineties.

The world needs a David Bowie. Expanding thought, music and art. Seeing what is a "fad" and bursting it's bubble in ways nobody could conceptualize. Jack Nicholson is the king cool of acting, David Bowie the king cool of music. Rest in peace knowing the art you created will live on.

I'm glad MTV news are sharing these interviews. Amazing how they don't look or feel dated at all, and many of these are well over 20 years old now (dang, we're getting old). I guess that's a testament to the man himself really, how in every era, in everything that he was, in everything that he did, David Bowie was (and still is) timeless.
yes.always such a gentleman, always so polite even when pushed by lame interviewers, so humble, a regular type of guy that had a great sense of humour and obviously very intelligent, so miss him, thank goodness for u tube.
Bowie has long been a (hero?) of mine since I was 13 years old. I initially found him to be both shocking, and curiously astonishing. He seem to have a true artist's heart and lens. Looking up Bowie on RUclips is like visiting a old departed friend or hero. Here it is almost 2020, and I am enjoying his musics and interviews all over again.
I am absolutely in love with every single thing about this man here....every single thing about Bowie seems to have been created with the sole intent and purpose of making you fall in love with him
Definitely one of the best interviews with David Bowie I have seen. Great questions and he was clearly in the mood to go down memory lane. He seems to be enjoying it just as much as the interviewer in an appearing cathartic kind of way. RIP David Bowie! True artist and gift!

Really interesting... it's true most artist feel a need to create, that is by definition not rational. And the whole goal of the creative process is to create something as close as possible to what you have in mind. The interesting question for the artist isn't 'why do I have this idea' but rather 'how do I create this idea'.

+DreamPurpleFloyd Not necessarily. Focusing on the outcome- how do I express this idea- is one way of creating a piece of art. But it is equally valid and arguably more interesting to focus on the process itself. In that way of working, the artist has no fixed idea of what the outcome will be, and uses aspects of the process- self imposed rules, accidents, chance, collaboration etc- to influence the direction of the work. They may finally shape that into something more intentional, which would be like the painter coming up with a title at the end of the painting, as Bowie mentions, but they didn't set out with a particular result in mind when they began. Bowie himself used various 'experimental' techniques, cut-up lyrics being one, and it seems he took a more process-based approach to his work than an outcome based approach.
Exactly. There's no "correct" way to make art. You can start with an idea, or start with a process, or something else entirely, but it's wrong to say that there is only one way to do art. Sure certain mediums may lean one way or the other, but as long as you make a good piece of art, the process isn't going to discount that.
He was so well spoken, and genuine. You can tell he enjoyed just having the conversation. The Moroder story is gold, too.
He was so arriculate and intelligent when speaking. What a special man he was. He could speak on any subject and was comfortable in any circles.

You're so right. I had the good fortune to meet him in 1987 and nothing was too much trouble for him. He was friendly, amusing, polite, charming and the most wonderful smile. He was so down to earth and treated you as an equal. I wish I could have spent more time with him, he was a real gentleman, they are few and far between these days. I do wish he hadn't done the drugs and smoking, though.

This poor, sad interviewer. Trotting out the same, tired, old questions. To have access to Bowie's brilliance and not go down those blind alleys with him as he's opening those doors, opting to choose to tread down the same, worn high street instead, is such an incredible waste.
Bowie: "I know so many painters who title their works after they've done them, which is a real giveaway."
Me: "Why? What does that mean to you? That they don't know what they're doing as they do it but can only tell you after it's done? Same with you as you went through stages of your career?"
Interviewer: "Um, yeah. So, your previous characters were very 'white,' and then you played R&B..."
No wonder Bowie went into hiding. How unfathomably boring these discussions must have been for him.
I was devastated by the interviewer's follow up question to that. It was exciting to see his eyes and expressions as the thoughts zipped through his brain. I wanted to explore his thoughts to that end... Oh well..

You can also see from his reaction, his expression after that how alienated he felt, at least in this interview. It's a common occurrence for myself when talking to people, they just don't get what I'm talking about, very few do.

I enjoyed this interview... The leading questions were good and Bowie was very forthcoming. HOWEVER the interviewer lacked talent in following up on points Bowie made, he didn't flesh out the stories or dig more into what David said, and he dudnt keep the conversation going. He had a prepared set of questions and thats all he could say. When david would finish talking, there would be an almost awkward silence, instead of the interviewer continuing Davids train of thought...
I like interviews where they just talk to him rather than ask him the same old question showing on a piece of paper.
Better to just shut up and let the other person speak if you don’t think you can add anything of value. Besides I like the fact that the more the interview just let Bowie talk the more we got.
If anything the interviewer was fantastic and not making it about them or their ego

Many of his interviews across youtube are mostly about his beginnings...yet there`s so much to be asked and answered about the era that followed.
The song fame makes much more sense after his explanation.
It was just a song that he wrote about how he felt about fame. No wonder he wrote it. They treated him like shit and he respected them thoroughly nomatter what. Even if he didn't answer the questions, he respected them. Even Jomathan Ross...that perv. I think he had the hots for Dave and Dave wasn't gonna have it. I think that Ross was just trying to bully him, but eww...nevertheless, Bowie could pick better if he was gonna go down that road.
This is a good interview, but I think the best one of all by far is Bowie in the Studio and ZDTV interview of 1999, which you can also find on youtube. It is absolutely amazing -- his humor, charm, wit and intellect come through like I've never seen anyplace else. Plus the last 10 minutes show the process of how he records a song in a studio, which is fascinating.

Kabuki, drag, the drag/priesthood history. To drag in every piece of information and put it into it. Process over meaning. Titled works after completion is a real giveaway. The idea of being trapped or pinned down as a writer. He was an authentic Deleuzian!

He was a trailblazer for many worlds .His early ventures into bisexuality . Must of helped so much for many people. Bringing it into mainstream media and helping people to know who they are . Also helping families and friends of LGBTQ+ people. Was lucky to see him live in the nineties.
