Bowie, Dylan and the Beatles were the soundtrack to my teenage years and I see them as the three best artists of the century. I played Bowie songs nonstop at one stage, drove my family crazy, but I was so amazed by his very sophisticated songs that I had to hear them again and again. Bless you Bowie for giving us such beautiful songs.
I love the bit about his bad stretch during the 80s. An artist should never compromise. And he realized that in the early 90s and contiued to follow his impeccable instincts. He even turned his death into a piece of art. What an incredible human being.
Hi, I'm a big DAVID BOWIE FAN ! Saw him in concert several times in CLEVELAND OHIO in the early 70s. Used 2 get tickets by mail order, I wrote a check 4 the tickets & he endorsed the check with THANK YOU SO MUCH, DAVID BOWIE. 1st & only time I got a TY & an autograph from a Rock Star. R.I.P. DAVID BOWIE & TY 4 THE MEMORIES ❤ ! L8R
Typically English in his self deprecation and humour .....he always maintained and honesty and integrity that made him all the more endearing. He was a musical genius, one of a kind , a beautiful human being who gave us so much and remained humble right to the end . ❤
I really miss David, it's such a loss to know he is gone, what a blessing we have his music and interviews, after so long I can see these, what a great and intelligent person he was.
I saw him in the late 70's or early 80's. I expected the 8" stacks and orange hair. He came out with his hair blonde and a tux. He was dressed like Frank Sinatra. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.
Billy Murray fan what a very sad person you are. A shame you didn’t keep your horrid, unkind opinions to yourself. What didnBowie do to you to make you spill such bile???
Bowie really was an innovator in his early and later years. Such an interesting , intelligent laid back guy who refused an honor from the queen. Truly one of the greatest rock stars ever. Respect RIP
I love David Bowie ♥️ You never knew what he was going to do next. He was just brilliant. I love listening to him talk too!!! He's got a great sense of humor!! I miss him very much!!! David Bowie is, and always will be a legend. He will never be forgotten. People will be listening to this incredible artist for many generations to come!!! Thank you for sharing your incredible talent with us David Bowie ❤️ REST IN PEACE 🙏
What a magnificent interview! Bowie is so at ease, his eloquence and intelligence are so effortless, he imparts incredible insights into music in general and his own musical growth. Maybe I can be a hero just for one day, but Bowie will always be a hero to me.
Simply a genius that we are fortunate to have experienced in our lifetime.......hopefully future generations will realise how much this man contributed to his craft. A true Genius!
He was so wise. Looking back on his interviews, he was ahead of the game on so many topics and issues. The MTV interview where he, politely, takes them apart on their lack of diversity for black musicians is phenomenal.
Well MTV and the rest of the world certainly made up for it, since blues and RnB-based pop and hip-hop have dominated the mainstream on a global scale.
Hizo lo que quizo siempre. Nada lo detubo. El mismo era un showman ,sin necidad de redes sociales q hay hoy , David era un super satar. El invento el arte de promocionar su carrera .
David Bowie was definitely a very intelligent, articulate, multi-talented individual. He excelled in so many other areas besides singing. I was really amazed that he kept on working almost to the day he died. He was one of a kind and I doubt that we will see his like again.
What an amazing interview....Bowie must've been comfortable with that gent...he was extremely relaxed and honest with few obvious concerns in freely chatting...so nice to see. Thanks for sharing!!
Growing up in the 70's with a sister that absolutely idolised Bowie and Motown was bliss for me. A wonderful period in my life so full of music and love.
David was the embodiment of the aesthetic impulse, a true artist for all of us. I love the way he talks of John Lennon, the way he took the avant garde and made art for the masses, without being elitist. When I was a little kid, "Strawberry Fields Forever" came out. I did not understand the music or video, but I knew the world had changed.
Interesting how the interview concluded with the idea that he was no longer a trailblazer. Blackstar in my opinion is one of his finest works. Two years after his passing I can listen to this album and not imagine any other artist with the balls to create such an emotionally raw album while still allowing the music not to be overshadowed by his personal pain.
I've always felt that David Bowie looked less his age as he grew older, not that this is a bad thing. In his 70's interviews he comes across as the usung genius that has visions far beyond his (or our) comprehension. That of course made him compose some of his best work. I was born in 1963 and the first I remember of him was Jean Genie but I thought it was a Rolling Stones record (sorry). Then in the 80's he went "public" whith Modern Love and China Girls. I know lots of people didn't like that about him. I liked it! And he opened up more about his peronal life. Like when he was promoting Never let me Down in Holland he told the interviewer that he had just recently learned to swim. I was so lucky to be able to see him live in Rotterdam in 1987 at the Glass Spider Tour. After 1987 he kind of did what he wanted to do (to me that seems like an artist's heaven) and he seems to have opened up a lot more in that time in interviews etc. I will always remember that fateful day when my brother called me and said he just heard that David Bowie had passed away. In 1977 I had seen people cry when Elvis Presley died, and I never thought that I would ever feel that way. But on David Bowie's passing I cried, and many months after that, which I never thought that I would. But I did. Because all the years I had been listening to and learning about music, he had always been there. Like a constant factor in my life. Him dying felt like it could not be true because he was immortal already. How could our role model, the one that told us that we could be US, the one that told us "be brave enough to be yourself" die? It just felt so cheap... "Time is waiting in the wings..." He that showed the world that there are so many pieces. facets that compose a human being, and that there are more sides to every story, more aspects to any person, than meets the eye... David Robert Jones, David Bowie, Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust, The Thin White Duke, The Starman, Thomas Jerome Newton, and many others that I don't know at the moment. Thank you David Bowie, for everything, have a great journey, hope to see you in heaven some day.
Thank you for the well thought out and composed comment on David, rest assured you are one of many including myself that will forever miss him but are blessed enough to be able to hear him everyday if we so wish. There will only ever be one David Bowie and we were most fortunate to have been on the planet at the same time he was! Peace
I'm also born in 1963....live in the NW Bronx....often saw Bowie walking in the Village....mostly in record and books stores. Never spoke with him....just a respectful 'nod...as if to recognize....yet respect his anonymity, as a fellow New Yorker. He always wanted NEW things....records...books....newest copies of NME and other music and art periodicals (talked with sales people as I was often in line also waiting for checkout at same time he was). I did have ONE friend who was, and remains a HUGE BOWIE fan....we saw hm on the SERIOUS MOONLIGHT tour....had to travel with friends to Syracuse in upstate NY, since his NYC dates were sold out...several Madison Square Garden dates...but , like you, I did see his GLASS SPIDER tour....a bit of a let down, but we "got" the Toni Basil choreography....and loved his musicians, esp. Carlos Alomar on guitar. I was turned off by his move with the Sales Brothers....TIN MACHINE. When I did see Bowie in NYC's Village/Chelsea....it was most often in later PM hours....8-9-10pm...often when record stores and book stores on 8th Street....on 6th Avenue were closing. I did cry when he died....had seen a photo from the premiere of LAZARUS the month before he died, I believe, in the NY DAILY NEWS which I have rarely looked through in recent years. He looked well and then WHAM....dead. Similar with PRINCE, a few months later. I'm looking through as much interviews with BOWIE as I can handle...IGGY PPOP and his producer Tony give a nice perspective. Hope his daughter is doing OK.
Every single interview I've seen Bowie give, he, every single time, comes across as such a friendly, kind person. Lovely man. Wonderful music. Greatly missed.
In the last 20 years of his life you can tell he is happy in his private life. He is a relaxed, contented man who has done it all and has nothing to prove. He has a happy home to go home to - wonderful man. Can't believe he name checked Freddie Starr, what a great sense of humour he had - even in the face of dull, inane, humourless questioning like this!
A very respectful interviewer asking many questions and perhaps himself wishing he had longer .....? David seemed so happy here ..... I miss his work.... and his articulate manner....
Lloyd Gittens Leave him alone. Of course many people have died. That doesn’t make it any less painful if you’re a fan. I still grieve over the loss of John Lennon, George Harrison, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimi Hendrix, and Michael Jackson, to name a few.
In hindsight, David Bowie was such an enigma. constantly reinventing himself, his public persona. I've been a fan off and on for decades, but his last trick, coming out with a most curious and wonderful record, then adding an EP to it, then Releasing Blackstar as we hear he died of cancer that the public did not know he had! Amazing!
Such an interesting, intelligent and authentic man, and when you factor in all of that creative skill and energy, his humility and openness is all the more amazing, what a loss his death has been to us all.
I'm not one to Pine over idols but I continue to mourn David Bowie, even more now that I see the full scope of his life and his wisdom. How lucky we got to witness this transcendent artist in our lifetime ❤️🎁❤️
For me there has never been a music artist as talented as David Bowie. He could do anything act, sing, played on Broadway as the elephant Man and cryptically acclaimed. The man who fell to earth a master piece of a film. Ziggi stardust such a iconic album in music history . The guy had such grace and class. Then when it was time to leave this world he went out with such dignity and left us with a album of the quality as black Star. The word genius is used to often but not in Bowie's case. He sprinkled stardust where ever he went .
I read about it. He said: "I'm really a Capricorn. I'm a goat. I love to climb hills & mountains." I have an astrology book that has his rising sign as Libra, (which would explain his courtesy) but he's had his chart done & it's Aquarius. He's always on about books & curiosity, so that makes sense. (Phil Collins is an Aquarius.. *shrug*) His moon sign is Leo.✌
I watched his early concerts on TV in the early 70’s he was so amazing changed costumes many times a show. He is the most influential artist that influenced me to become a musician not of his caliber but no t many are. I miss him dearly such a humble man.
I was introduced to Bowie by a flatmate at 16 years old. We would listen to album after album and we had all of his albums. Whenever he released a new album we would buy it that day. Today I was the same up until he passed. What an artist, personality, writer performer and a nice guy. Missed terribly. RIP Iconic legend.
It's clear Bowie is the most content and centred he's ever been - he's found happiness with Iman. He's so chilled, he's tolerating this clumsy interviewer's awful, stilted questions with incredible grace! I'm so glad he met Iman, this great man deserved that wonderful lady and the family life they created together. It underpinned the last decades of his life, and gave him the work life balance that was always missing. Love is the only drug worth getting hooked on!
Such a thoughtful man at that age. That same set of questions at 28 would have left such a different impression on us. Amazing how we can continue to grow as long as we go after meaningful relationships that we allow to mold us and the passions that light our fire! RIP DB. The world is a little darker without you.
He aged so well. As a teen female I bought his scary monsters album. Still listen to it. Then MTV came out, blue jean became my favorite song. Wish he were still on earth. So much to say....
My first money making band was in highschool ('65) but I came in to my own as a weekend warrior from '71 for about 28 years. Bowie fascinated me because I got paid for recognizable cover music while Bowie was always coming out with impressive yet non-mainstream music. It would have cleared the dance floor to have played his stuff (If I'd been able to get my band at the time to play it) but that doesn't mean that he didn't impress the living sh*t out of me! I'll never forget watching him on Midnight Special or Rock Concert with Mick Ronson. Bowie's boldness with constantly unexpected metamorphosis of both image and music constantly amazed me. Imo, his place in "Rock History" as an innovator is unique.
One of my favorite artist. Loved all his music. But I have to say the 80’s was my favorite era of his music Great artist and a super nice guy The Glass Spider Tour. One of the best ever
David was flaming at this time in his life. Still relatively young , prolific, and arty still in his long prime. I did indeed love this era of David. He could pull in anyone into his charming web....lot of great music to follow this interview...P.S. this is a nifty interview.
David Bowie is one of those timeless musicians that everyone aspires to. He set the mark, and set it higher then a lot of his contemporaries. Musicians and listeners are all the more better for it.
Wasn’t sure what prolific things I wanted to say about Bowie because there are so many! I just love him and he is dearly missed! He is truly the greatest that I’ve ever encountered! God bless you David bowie!! we miss you thanks for all that you’ve done!! Thank you for sharing your wisdom and your talent! I adore you always!
I remember seeing him on Midnight Special in 1977 as he performed Heroes. As a kid I thought that was the weirdest thing I've ever seen. A couple of days later I bought the album. Highly talented man. RIP
I seen David Bowie in concert in the mid-seventies in Milwaukee Wisconsin, I was in high school great artists I believe it was the Ziggy Stardust tour. 1975 or 76. Always liked his music through the years!
Sempre sorridente....sempre educato...un vero gentleman...un genio come lui avrebbe potuto essere molto più arrogante ma Bowie era un uomo intelligente...ci manca la sua musica..ci manca il suo sorriso....ci manca Ziggy...love Bowie

thanks so much for uploading this, very interesting! I´m stunned and stunned again, of how intelligent this man was. I mean apart from his genius as an artist, expecially concerning music, but also about every other topic that he talks about, always makes me think again: "Wow, he was the best!" So glad he survived the cocain-years. Sometimes I find myself spending more time to listen to interviews than to his music. How interesting it must have been in his company, especially during these later years...

Unbelievable that he was 57 here! Very youthful looks and attitude.
Your opinion is unappreciated. Why would anyone be considered a drab at the age of 57?
I appreciated the comment.
Probably because they're 57 perhaps...face it David looks amazing for his age here.
looks like akid
Its Called Money, he had a Net worth: $230 million...That can buy you all the Youth you need...Plastic Surgery people, C'mon Wake Up...
Frank Petrie I love B owie and I am from Cleveland as well!
Typically English in his self deprecation and humour .....he always maintained and honesty and integrity that made him all the more endearing. He was a musical genius, one of a kind , a beautiful human being who gave us so much and remained humble right to the end . ❤
David within the first 3 minutes of this interview just reminded me of how brilliant he really was...man he was Genius!
It’s just not fair one guy dripping with all that talent! Lol! Painting, movies, and thank God, all that timeless music! ❤️

Refugee59 Would have been the 80s.
@Blashtifin.
Blonde hair and tux is definitely post Thin White Duke. It's the 'Let's Dance' era. The 'Duke' hair was orange.
Thin White Duke, from 1976...the Station to Station album...
total crooner
Billy Murray fan what a very sad person you are. A shame you didn’t keep your horrid, unkind opinions to yourself. What didnBowie do to you to make you spill such bile???
Bowie really was an innovator in his early and later years. Such an interesting , intelligent laid back guy who refused an honor from the queen. Truly one of the greatest rock stars ever. Respect RIP
Why do I have the feeling that to meet this man, he would look you in the eye and see you. Beautiful human.
I met him in 78 treseed like the STATION TO STATION cover..i was 17 he was a gentlemen .....told me i looked terribly smart
It kind of feels like I’m talking to a wise adult friend or something it feels so warm and genuine and i just could listen to him talk all day
His deadpan humour is so subtle and brilliant. If you blink, you might miss it.
I must have blinked
So agree. Bowie was an artistic genius and his mind & wit were part & parcel of it. Unique 1 of 1.

Simply a genius that we are fortunate to have experienced in our lifetime.......hopefully future generations will realise how much this man contributed to his craft. A true Genius!
what a thoughtful, witty, humorous and talented person. we were so luck to have him
He was so wise. Looking back on his interviews, he was ahead of the game on so many topics and issues. The MTV interview where he, politely, takes them apart on their lack of diversity for black musicians is phenomenal.
Then black (so-called) musicians were all they featured. And what wretched music.
Well MTV and the rest of the world certainly made up for it, since blues and RnB-based pop and hip-hop have dominated the mainstream on a global scale.
@@Egoblivion hopefully that will cha cha changes!!!! x

The line from the song Ziggy Stardust "Like a cat from Japan" makes a lot more sense now.
Ah, right, good catch :-)
Zap529 Ziggy Stardust song was created before he got the last idea of making Ziggy looks more like a kabuki.
I always thought Ziggy Stardust might've been based a bit on Marc Bolan, but I've heard Iggy Pop was one inspiration for Ziggy, and Jean Genie
klmullins65 Ziggy is a mix of lot of things, that's why is so amazing, cause David could pick a little bit of everything and put it together
Great observation!
He is brilliant, naturally eloquent, core splittingly honest and courageously vulnerable. The best of the best
Excellent ... I hope my YT Bowie songs bring him pleasure from far far away.
In every phase of his life and career, he was a brilliant, articulate and beautiful man
Hizo lo que quizo siempre. Nada lo detubo. El mismo era un showman ,sin necidad de redes sociales q hay hoy , David era un super satar. El invento el arte de promocionar su carrera .
@@ximepalleiro1224 And what he did ? I am new here .♥️
David Bowie was definitely a very intelligent, articulate, multi-talented individual. He excelled in so many other areas besides singing. I was really amazed that he kept on working almost to the day he died. He was one of a kind and I doubt that we will see his like again.
He was such a genius and such a handsome man! I miss him! Thank you for posting!
Beautiful interview, beautiful man lovely to see him with his feet firmly on the ground. His legacy, he gave us joy.
Marvellous interview. Fascinating and humorous. I miss Mr Bowie and his eccentricities.

The interviewer was a mediocre hack
Really heroic effort, and a gracious gift for those of us who appreciated his work.
Can't listen to it
It makes me cry 😢
Peace
No
His humility and giving disposition are rare traits in general, and especially rare in those of such ability.
@@glennfromthebronx What a touching comment. Thank you.
You can see how much he genuinely enjoyed music and his job and i love it so much
I love how normal he became in his latter years! What a funny, sweet man and a breathtaking artist. Love his humour and wisdom
Every single interview I've seen Bowie give, he, every single time, comes across as such a friendly, kind person. Lovely man. Wonderful music. Greatly missed.
Bowie was always brilliant and articulate in an interview.
I’ve been secretly quietly in love with David Bowie and his music since I was 8 years old. I never tire of looking at him and listening to him talk 💕
I'm weeping & utterly speechless.... this world will never be the same without you Davie Jones. Thank you & RIP.
Pull yourself out of it man(?).
LEGEND ,,,, Hate his music being insulted everywhere now /////broadway hams
Lloyd Gittens Leave him alone. Of course many people have died. That doesn’t make it any less painful if you’re a fan. I still grieve over the loss of John Lennon, George Harrison, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimi Hendrix, and Michael Jackson, to name a few.
David Bowie was an ordinary man, who had revolutionary ideas. Exceptional artist.
Agreed & Pinned #Peace
Really well said. I absolutely agree.
Goodbye Mr Lawrence was awesome.
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence
First time seeing him talking about being a capricorn... so sweet.
And Catholic

I was lucky enough to see him live 10 times from Ziggy in 1973 until 2006.A true legend.
Incredible, you were BEYOND lucky looking back now, most fortunate indeed!
Had to laugh when he said he'd like to be remembered for having great haircuts, as I'd already been thinking "damn, wish I had hair that good"!
That was a great interview... just a bit of an Aussie stiff. I think David Bowie found him Charming
Yes wow so happy chill grounded
Such a thoughtful man at that age. That same set of questions at 28 would have left such a different impression on us. Amazing how we can continue to grow as long as we go after meaningful relationships that we allow to mold us and the passions that light our fire! RIP DB. The world is a little darker without you.
He aged so well. As a teen female I bought his scary monsters album. Still listen to it. Then MTV came out, blue jean became my favorite song. Wish he were still on earth. So much to say....
It’s incredible that at the very end he finally made a musical
Pure creative genius. The c.over photo on Aladdin Sane is the ultimate cool hairtcut
Love watching Bowie interviews. Such a wonderful man.
But I have to say the 80’s was my favorite era of his music
Great artist and a super nice guy
The Glass Spider Tour. One of the best ever
