I think I’ve seen just about all Bowie interviews except this one, and I’ve just realized this is the first time I’ve seen an interview from the period of his career he later called a “flop” in terms of catering to the audience’s tastes instead of his own, and this is a very very interesting example of what he meant by that. I never thought albums from this time were really “flops” but I can sense an extremely slight difference in attitude, he seems ever so slightly off his game in this interview. All other interviews he was pretty cut throat and focused the entire way through but this one he seems to be a little high on the idea of success. Very interesting to see, and a good cautionary tale of success. It’s a wonderful world we live in where cut throat is key considering deep down that’s what our true selves REALLY want to do haha
I like his yeah consistent curiosity with the world, I think there's an uncomfortable amount of pain & loneliness with being yourself just because the NEED for a cut throat reaction is only necessary from the lack of awareness in others or just specifically by interviewers. Not to disagree with ur well worded comment, very swag. just food for thought ♡ i see this segment as his first dable at being a normal person as he ages even if that allows others to get under your skin & dictate your actions for a while
That's not what it is its more that the interviewer is annoying and asking stupid question. He is polite and down the earth. Most humble artists to be fair. They are rare endangered species in today's world.
yeah, i agree. even his voice sounds a bit different (maybe he had a cold? lol) … but his energy feels a bit off as well. seems a bit run dry. maybe slightly more flashy than normal, which was likely a manifestation of an inner insecurity in his work. love him regardless, but his energy felt much more authentic & light in the following years
Never understood why interviewers attack artists for not answering their questions.....she's awful and he wa far too intelligent for most. He really explained how his dreams are wonderfully inspiring for him..etc and she just said "ok"...what an idiotic person
Oh my god, I can't believe he didn't just walk off. Packaging, calculating, chameleon-- how many peg holes can she try to shove him in? And her way of asking is like an interrogation, no pleasure in the questioning or the receiving of the answer. He, as always, was brilliant and gracious, so I wanted to like it, but couldn't because of her. Can't even imagine approaching him in this way
I agree. But David was always good about taking these framings with a grain of salt. I love how he handles these people. He didn't berate her. He basically indicated that she could do better. Anytime I see these interviewers push the mundane and obvious, I just remind myself that we can't all be David Bowie 😉
11:17 "Stop back in '76" has the same vibe as "I was today years old when I realized XYZ", further proof that Bowie was way ahead of his time (and that's without even mentioning Meme companies)
I genuinely think that Bowie really liked never let me down and then after hearing all the negative reviews just said that he didn't years later. I enjoy the album I think it is fun.
What I think is that perhaps he enjoyed creating the tour and all the theatrical elements to it because oh how amazing it was...but maybe he didn't quite like the music itself
Someone once asked David "How , or what would you like to be remembered for"? His answer was unexpected, and self-effacing. He said: "I had a lot of good haircuts".
4:53 he pushed back and 5:43 she pushed back a bit Interviews from this period are interesting after hearing his thoughts on this period being the worst of his career. Odd to hear him sound excited about the music, when you realize he actually hated it and felt he was in a slump...
Hahahahha. Talking about 'multimedia' in 1987. I doubt anyone else even understood wtf he was on about! Is amazing listening to things he said back then and applying them to modern day. What a bloody genius.
Because the interviewer was dreadful, I would think. I couldn't bring myself to liking it because I felt insulted so many times for him. He was so gracious -- why ever did they send such a cold fish to interview someone of his caliber? I mean geez - "packaging" "calculated". Her tone.

It's crazy, he is 40 in this Interview, i was just a litte 3 years old Girl back then, behind a Wall that cuts Germany in two countries and divided Berlin, BUT I adore him so much. That freaks me out. I was a "Baby" and he had a little Boy in this time, older than me. Yes okay, i am a Freak
The best product you can produce is old 80's interviews? Barf, I will not purchase anything from MTV or Viacom until this nonsense stops. IT'S TIME TO STOP!!
Hmm, simplistic advice I'm afraid. I'd say: kids, if you're curious about drugs, then be very careful and only use them with people that you trust and make sure you know what you're taking. Also, learn to know your limits. The "just say no" thing has never ever worked.
Can you guys talk about David Bowie's child abuse allegations a bit more? I feel like that's been swept under the rug. Also, thanks for bringing back Decoded! I love that series.
Please actually get your facts right !They were not allegations just the kiss and tell of notorious underage Groupie Lori Mattix who has retold her stories about being an underage Groupie and how she would use fake ID to get into clubs and get different rock stars. She has always made it extremely clear that she was never a victim and that she was never abused in anyway. Even to this day she still brags about it and has always spoken very highly of Bowie regarding him as a gentleman. Its highly likely that Bowie was unaware she was underage as these Groupies dressed to look older they would lie about their age and many had fake IDs. That dosent make it right but if someone looks older lies about their age and consents, then how are you to know the person was underage? Lori is also known amongst other Groupies for being unreliable and she originally claimed for years she lost her V card to Jimmy Page before changing it to Bowie and she has given at least 4 different versions of the story across different interviews and books which have been full of inconsistencies and factual errors plus the times and dates never fit. Please get your facts right as Bowie hasn't been accused of anything

Extremely well said.
He also seems somewhat tired of the interviewer lol

God I still love this man... he was so classy and charismatic
This is a completely new interview to me.
It was to me also

I know I'm 2 years late to the party, but- totally agreed! She was buzzkill!
And he laughed at her on noticing

I love the album. He seemed to like it back them, right? Otherwise he really convincingly pretended that he did, when he didn’t.

Let's be honest, you came here for 2:53
Bowie always 25 years ahead of his time. Ignoring most of his 80's output.

Love this voice!
Nice interview.
It’s a shame such established, talented artists have to tolerate such horrid interviewers 🤦🏻♀️ Bowie forever 🙌🏻
He's a charm and she's just ... oh dear, he's too intelligent for these interviews.
Hahahahha. Talking about 'multimedia' in 1987. I doubt anyone else even understood wtf he was on about! Is amazing listening to things he said back then and applying them to modern day. What a bloody genius.
rhe dislikes are because people were blinded of how dsvis bowie looks so good they missed the like button
No, they were for the soul sucking interviewer who should have been a cop or someone doing experiments with rats
It's like she's reading questions off a list she came into the interview with. Not listening at all to his answers and following up as appropriate.
Oh my god I finally found the meme companies interview
wonderful !!!
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence was so beautiful
Why so many dislikes?? I hope that it's from the fact that MTV are racists and not becuase of David Bowie.
MTV are racist, he’s confronted them in the past

Giorgio de Chirico

Yeah, some paid bots in Bangalore keep giving unsolicited thumbs up for these videos.
I love how the alt right have the audacity to call Liberals "triggered". But just wait until you read the comment section! Lmao!
