To this day, it's my favorite NIN album and I think it's their best masterpiece. Im 41 now but remember vividly as a kid in middle school walking into a friends room who was asleep but had "a warm place" playing on his stereo. The mood it instantly put me in was unforgettable.
I stole that album in middle school not knowing anything about NIN, only that I liked the artwork and I felt 'fragile' (and super angsty). At the time I was living in the back of a converted box truck with my family. That album, and the Sony discman I also stole, gave me the first real feeling of privacy I'd experienced. It's still my absolute favorite album.

The Downward Spiral had a tremendous influence on my as a young adult musician in the 90's. It taught me that "heavy" didn't always mean aggro and powerful. Heavy could be emotionally vulnerable. Heavy could be anger and sadness. Trent's brilliance redefined where the lines could be drawn for quote/unquote "heavy" music for me personally. For that? I'll be eternally grateful. ❤🔥

Trent Reznor multi platinum record selling artist, has won multiple Grammys and Oscars. Saying we barely know enough to keep getting hired. Imposter syndrome is a heck of a thing.

It's curious. NIN was always Trent. All interviews were just with Trent. Now NIN is Trent and Atticus. Obviously, this is an awesome turn of events, but after so many decades, it's odd seeing two people interviewed for NIN.
He got tired of being the only guy. He likes having someone to challenge him and bounce ideas off of that he respects. Or so he's said. I would like to hear another just Trent project to see what would come of it now.
This is great! I'm glad Trent has the opportunity to break down each if his highlights! He has accomplished so much! I watch him and his wife play How to Destroy Angels togther with that Xotox dude helping them with drum programming! The laser light show was EpIC! HTDA only played 4 shows too!
Times like this I really appreciate RUclips more than any other streaming service. It’s stable viewing on cellular data while camping. I don’t have to wait to watch these legends gently discuss how they intentionally became greater legends when they wanted to. Their influence on film music: I haven’t seen the ninja turtles movie they did, but I’ve listened to its soundtrack 6 times.
Hand Covers Bruise is one of my all time favorite intro score pieces. It sets the tone of the film so perfectly. The seething anger beneath the gentle piano is so perfect for this story of betrayal
Trent is a musical genius, simple. NIN is where is started, but for raw emotion that speaks to you, any score that he has written is where its at. I watched "Soul" and realized I knew that "sound" and the composer was Trent. Yea, modern day...mozart?
The downward spiral is absolutely one of the greatest albums ever made. I remember clearly the first night I listened to it at a friends house in a small room with a great amplifier and big seakers and I actually wet myself with the sheer power that shot out of the speakers.
You know, a lot of the rock stars I swore I would love forever when I was a teenager have gone on to disappoint me. But not Trent. And Atticus also threads that needle between "great music that history will remember" and "music that actually rocks" so well and has for so long. Thanks for helping a lot of us through hard times and contributing to art that has shaped our cultural landscape for the better. You're real ones.
Trent's ability to create songs that hit your core is something very few artists can really achieve. It's so authentic and therapeutic. Hurt is one of, if not the most powerful modern songs ever written. In my opinion. It is pure, cold, human emotion, put into a glass bottle. Both of these guys have produced some of the best music of the last 30+ years without a doubt.
PLEASE DO MORE MUSICIANS/BANDS FOR THIS “breaking down” series…. I would love to see more bands like Tool, System of a Down, Korn, Metallica, Marilyn Manson, Foo Fighters, etc
Been a huge NIN fan since I was too young to be one, went to my first concert alone at 13, it's nice to see the world come around to embracing music that I felt alone loving my whole life.
Been a Nails fan for many many years now, as soon as Ghosts came out we all said ok when's the movie come out, and look a them now haha. Can't wait for new music!
These two are my favorite composers of all time. I could listen to Trent talk for hours about these kind of stuff, behind the scenes, how did it happen, choice of instruments and key decisions in general, etc. Personally, for me, I can't help finding it all to be so fascinating, but most importantly the way their compositions can convey a vast array of emotions while staying instrumental, most of the time. I think they should be an inspiration for any music composer out there. Just phenomenal artistry.
So glad they are still working on new ventures. They are so necessary in our current context. Love you Trent, please come back to Chile with NIN someday
7:55 That whole section about 'Hurt' is just awesome. Even though I've read about the details in the past, hearing him speak about it with emotion just hits differently for some reason.
I so enjoy the soundtracks by these two gentlemen. I've been listening to Trent and NiN since the 90's and am so impressed how much more complex and mature his music has become. There is so much emotion in there... really brings out the mood of the film.
Incredible to hear Atticus describe his connection to his favourite albums because that's the same way I felt when I first heard NIN and Downward Spiral. Didn't get it at all but there was something about the record that made me want to try to get it and it took like three years but when it clicked I was hooked.
The social network score is one of my favorites. It’s one that feels hauntingly sad but beautiful and soul definitely is a stand out as well so much emotion
Listening to that song high for the first time was an awesome experience, I had heard the song like a thousand times but then I heard things I hadn’t heard before
I remember seeing The Social Network, not knowing Trent Reznor had anything to do with the music, and immediately thought "this sounds like NIN" and it made the movie even that much better.
Atticus Ross is really awesome, his more minor collaborations and works over the time caught my eye. I always loved the EP he made when he collaborated with the Singer of Dillinger Escape Plan (Band: Error, Notable Songs: Jack the Ripper and Nothing's Working). 4 songs only ever made but its that kind of collaboration where you see some gems come through and see how someone works in a tight project.

Trent’s artistry is so inspiring.
Epiphany cured my depression. That song spoke to my Soul like no other and came to me when I needed it most. Thank you Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
I’ve listened to downward spiral so many times,I’m glad they posted this video.
It’s one of the greatest albums of all time.
It's curious. NIN was always Trent. All interviews were just with Trent. Now NIN is Trent and Atticus.
Obviously, this is an awesome turn of events, but after so many decades, it's odd seeing two people interviewed for NIN.
Same thoughts😅
He got tired of being the only guy. He likes having someone to challenge him and bounce ideas off of that he respects. Or so he's said.
I would like to hear another just Trent project to see what would come of it now.
This is great! I'm glad Trent has the opportunity to break down each if his highlights! He has accomplished so much! I watch him and his wife play How to Destroy Angels togther with that Xotox dude helping them with drum programming! The laser light show was EpIC! HTDA only played 4 shows too!
Closer is genuinely one of my fav songs. There's this overwhelming sexiness which makes the song feel very high quality.
You must be a stripper. JK...
Which is ironic because it's a about someone who is empty inside and only acts on animal instinct
great to see Soul here, watched it recently and loved their music for it
Thank you for this interview. Their music is incredibly important for so many people!
Can't believe they didn't include The Perfect Drug here.. to date one of their best songs.
I will now go see Challengers--based solely on the fact that they did the score.
Its a great score
Love how honest Trent is. He’s open when things seem weird to him and doesn’t care if it might make people think a certain way.
He’s a true genius.
Definitely need a part 2 with a dive into The Fragile/With Teeth/Year Zero albums
My brother is the one who introduced me to NIN and a lot of the music they use in movie projects are a lot of my faves!
PLEASE DO MORE MUSICIANS/BANDS FOR THIS “breaking down” series…. I would love to see more bands like Tool, System of a Down, Korn, Metallica, Marilyn Manson, Foo Fighters, etc
If this is the first video about musicians and their iconic songs, that is great idea, hope it continues
Been a huge NIN fan since I was too young to be one, went to my first concert alone at 13, it's nice to see the world come around to embracing music that I felt alone loving my whole life.
Never in a million years did they or us have the slightest idea that Pixar would be in their catalogue. How far they’ve come.

That whole section about 'Hurt' is just awesome.
Even though I've read about the details in the past,
hearing him speak about it with emotion just hits differently for some reason.
The dragon tattoo score is underrated!! I constantly listen to it. To this day, I wish they made the sequels !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly, TDS got me through my teenage years.
It spoke, and was (in my opinion) NIN's best album, ever. Broken was a close second.
The social network score is one of my favorites. It’s one that feels hauntingly sad but beautiful and soul definitely is a stand out as well so much emotion
Closer is probably one of my favorite songs ever. Just a lot of sounds going into your brain all at once
Thank you for creating this video and interview! Great to get behind the scenes on some of these monumental songs/soundtracks
Trent Reznor has been such a gift in my life! I’m so happy for him and his success!!
It's always a pleasure to hear you two talking about music. We hope for a new NIN album as soon as possible.
