    I will always see the original as Trent reznor song. But Johnny Cash took that song and made it his own and elevated it. Even Trent reznor himself said it's not his song anymore. Because Johnny Cash doing that song at the end of his life you could feel the hurt and the regret and even a little shame and so much sadness and heartbreak and that it definitely was on another level.

    Reznor’s version is Thus Spoke Zarathustra, by Friedrich Nietzsche. Cash’s version is the Book of Ecclesiastes. If you can comprehend this you may indeed be onto the meaning of life.

    I grew up with NIN version but I love both versions they hit powerful emotional points in their own ways and understanding Trent's mindset during writing it works just as well as seeing the passage of time in Cash's music video

      Style? There is a complete lack of style. The entirety of this text was, in all its insulting irony, clearly a vapid, emotionless piece of phony superficial garbage generated by an AI in the first place (except for the part at the end that I'm certain they copy-paste on every video, where they pretend to be interested in the opinions of the viewers but really are just saying "leave a comment so that this gets more engagement and consequently popularity").

    • @theahearn2658
      @theahearn2658 5 месяцев назад

      That's kind of the point. And I saw this on another RUclips video but the way it's described is too perfect.
      Trent reznor's version is a suicide note
      Johnny Cash's version of it is a eulogy.
      The song is meant to make you feel it is meant to make you experience raw emotion. And Johnny Cash's version is absolutely the best version of it. If it's too painful for you to listen to then the song conveys what it's been trying to.

    • @JohnnyNatrium
      @JohnnyNatrium 2 месяца назад

      @@theahearn2658 We know that's the point. Everyone knows that's the point. For this guy it may just be a little too close to home and it's okay to not listen to things that make you just feel bad. I'm sure everyone's heard the cover, and I also think that an open mind to art as being emotionally challenging is essential to life. But some things hit a person in a certain way that's just hurtful for them to expose themselves to. No-one said the cover shouldn't exist because it's painful for some guy to listen to. But it's the same mechanism as self-harm to force yourself to feel pain and misery by listening to something that just awakens that in you and that you know doesn't help you if you really listen to what it does to you. Like someone who lost a kid to cancer recently may avoid certain media (or in fact comedy), without shouting for it to be "cancelled" for everyone else.
      So maybe respect someone's individual preference because they're taking their own responsibility in choosing not to listen to it, and they're not saying "this cover is too painful for *everyone*" and that no-one should therefore listen to it

      Disagree with people saying “Cash is the version…” Well, in facts, it’s not. Full stop. Either all due respect. Then musically, NIN’s version sounds way better to me: the voice, the keyboard..,

    I'm going to preemptively apologize, as I get a little heated about this, this song is not only sacred to me, but honestly it's an anthem for emo kids everywhere, I respect Johnny Cash, and have nothing against the cover, the problem I have is where people can't put forth the effort to educate themselves, it's not a freaking Cash song, what he did was exceptional, but this was such a personal offering.

      Oi! It's Goth/Industrial! Emo is an absolute insult! Shame on you! Pistols at dawn!
      Goth is Goth
      Industrial is Industrial
      Johnny Cash is neither,
      He's just a damned fine musician!
      Sorry, just get REALLY cross when people mention emo. It is a sure sign of showing one's ignorance.

    • @jasonnielsen5976

      @@andriswood5434 I'm not calling NIN emo, I'm saying Hurt is an anthem for Emo kids everywhere, not the same thing, and regardless of your perception of the genre, it's a true testament of the impact of Hurt when it defies the scope of a single genre. Put your guns away, I don't disagree with you, but if you listen to Lorna Shore, The Pain Remains Trilogy, it's bringing in exposure to the Deathcore community, Hurt accomplishing the same thing, it brought a whole new fan base to people who didn't previously have exposure to any form of Industrial.
