I really like his voice, it's just such a pleasant English accent, not too posh, not too simple, just really relatable. It's quite calming and endearing.
That was my reaction, too. I'd never before seen an interview with RS, only read one or two in magazines, and I was pleasantly surprised. Such great perspective as a human being with great insight to all he's been doing, even when he was just 20 years old and singing "Boys Don't Cry" and not ashamed to admit he grew up listening to music like Ray Charles at home in beautiful Crawley.
Same for me. This was the first interview of his I'd ever seen and was thoroughly pleased to know that Robert is even cooler than I imagined he would be.
Down with all royals. Fuck you and your “superior” bloodline. I know this is a bit of a tangent but an American comedian I love named Doug Stanhope does some great bits about this topic. “Stop holding on to dead people’s baggage”.

I saw the Cure in Austin in 2008 and the set went on for two hours and I was thinking man, people are going to start passing out. Longest set by any band I have ever seen and really could not grasp why it went on for so long in a crowded theatre. Then I saw another interview with Robert Smith where he said he saved up money to go see the Rolling Stones in 1977 in London. He went by himself, took the train to London, but the set only lasted 45 minutes. He was utterly disappointed and saddened that after all the sacrifice he only got to see a 45 minute show. He vowed if her ever traveled to far away places as a musician, he would not do what happened to him to fans.
+Kyle M Saw The Cure in Austin last night - set went on for 2 1/2 hours!!!! I couldn't believe these old guys - hey I'm 55 so I can say that - could play that long!!! Awesome, brilliant - so glad I bought tickets to see them!
M. T. Campos Didn't know they were in town; all I do is work and sleep now. I was living in El Paso in 2013 when they had their first concert there, I was like "The Cure" in El Paso? Talk about a once in a lifetime occurence; well, they are going back again this year, lol.
Yeah I love that he does such a long set and it is amazing the whole way through! They are so underrated as artists I don't think many people realise how talented or how influential they have been!
We love you ❤
No one makes me feel the way Robert makes me feel. He's fucking amazing. everything about him. perfect. fascinating. beautiful. every Cure album has at some point been my absolute favourite.
Robert cracked me up when he went on about how the whole royalty thing is a bunch of people that have never really done anything with their lives, and how he has distain for that whole thing, then turns right around and says "I should be king!", hahahahahaha!!!!
I love the band, and I think Robert is a very intelligent, talented songwriter, but cannot disagree more about the monarchy. Yes, hereditary privilege I'm not a fan of, but the royal family are mostly a force for good in the country, and I'm sorry they have raised awareness and generated more money for the economy than a punk band have. I thought Robert didn't come off well here to be honest. Yes, open and honest, but a bit rambling, incoherent, and disrespectful. Not a good interview at all really for me. He's far more intelligent than this shows.
The Hooded Man also what he said about religions was kinda rude. Just Cos he doesn’t like Christianity, that doesn’t mean he has to be so close minded and hate ALL religions... like what even man
I can see both sides to it obviously the artists he respects that took honours from the royal family have a different point of view than him or have grown to have a different one. He’s entitled to his own opinion and I'm not too easily offended so it doesn't bother me. What one defines as a “good” or “bad” force in the world is suspect to a ton of subjectivity anyways. I still think Robert is an intelligent, passionate and sincere person, his joke about being King at the end there was his way of kind of de-escalating his intense speech and ending on a much lighter funny note which shows he's aware of how he might have come across not to mention he has always been uncomfortable doing interviews.
I grew up in Texas and had never even heard of The Cure prior to leaving High School in the 80s. I was at a friend's party when I first heard Robert Smith's lyrics. Went out and bought 3 albums the next day, and they're still tops in my playlist. Robert Smith is a musical genious and a very genuine person.
The band changes a lot but Robert and the band I've seen since they started(66years old now)I'm also a failed catholic and I'll be the kiddy to hangALL the royal ha ha family luv to the band and all their fans REAL PEOPLE love peace out Clem de meth xxx
punkinmyvitamins1 lol he is so right.. and this way of not caring of the very basic rules of language amd communication today is quite sad, in favour of the very poor "so called smart"(?)phone interactions. Thousands of years building beautiful and complex languages, and we are destroying them to go back to grumble-like and phone-directed communication...well maybe there is an irony or a sense in that.. Maybe R Smith will find it and write it down in a song :)
I have never really bothered with The Cure's music before but somehow I came to this interview and find Robert Smith really funny and insightful, especially his views on religion and monarchy. So I'm going to discover....Thanks Robert.
+Richard Albert Henderson I'm just now discovering the Cure too, but I am turned off by his views on religion. I'm very faith-centered and happy, and I owe a lot of that to my religion. Blanket statements about all religions are offensive and ignorant. Now the monarchy viewpoint is spot on.
I've been a dentist for 26 years and I remember listening to the cure while studying and for some reason it helped me focus. I still listen to them often. Keep it up guys.
Such an amazing man/band...the reason why Cure fans love them and him so much, is because they make their music with such authenticity, and you can feel it and hear it in both the lyrics and sound. .... and this interview proves it. Such an intellectually humble man, genius even. I love that he says he's still waiting to make his best music...true artists never stop trying to create. ... thank you Robert!
This man - his voice has actually improved with age..perhaps just changed to something different and equally beautiful. Forever in awe Mr. Smith. Thanks for the sound.
Wonderful interview, he is so humble and 100% honest. Ive been a Cure fan since the 80's, and will be till the day I die, and into the after life. Seeing them in concert was a great thrilling experience I will never forget, I hope to see them again soon.
Young people--millenials--don't even know that Robert was playing during the punk movement of the late 70s. He has been around for all of modern rock. And remains terrific & original & relevant. The Cure do NOT get enough recognition.
discovered them back in 82 i think - and than discovered their started in 76 !! with Easy Cure at the time . One of the most underrated bands for their longevity and quality . Had many of their vinyl's and rare 45's .
If Robert Smith was in therapy, I’d love to be a fly on the wall during his therapy sessions. He’s a really interesting person. Love his creative genius mind, his musical poetry, the way he expresses himself without caring what others think about him. He looked a lot like Ben Affleck in one of his earlier videos. The Cure songs take me back to my adolescent/teen years of the 80s. I feel like a teen when I listen to The Cure songs
I've just seen the Cure at Wembley. I've been seeing them since the late 70s. Robert is one of the best, most articulate and genuinely ace people in music. I love him and the Cure to bits. I'm so impressed that he is still challenging himself and respects his past but never sits back on it. New song "it can never be the same" proves that this is a band that will never stop growing. If genius truly exists it's got back combed hair and lipstick.
Talking about Cure concerts in France. If you listen to the Paris live album, you can clearly hear the love the audience has for the band and how its being reciprocated in the music.

He has a pretty unique and beautiful voice. I love Robert Smith
