    You cant just skip soul reaver 2 and jump right in to defiance because at the end people wont understand certain things, like why raziel enters the soul reaver, who's soul is it that's in the sword and those questions are answered in soul reaver 2. That and other things like the time paradox that's created at the end of soul reaver 2. Also, Janos Audrin. People wont know who he is, how dose he know raziel and what is their connection. so more confusion.

      +Sephirothwolf I was about to comment that Tony Jay didn't play Vorador, but realized you meant that Vorador's voice actor, Paul Lukather, _also_ died, which I didn't know until a few minutes ago.
      Well, shit. ;=;
      Still, I think I'm gonna play through the Legacy Of Kain series again. I'd love to find big-boxes for all the games, but I think PS Blood Omen, and the rest via Steam will do just nicely.

    Soul reaver 2 is arguably the most important game in the series. It’s the point in the series that hinges the entire storyline on how important Raziel is to changing the destiny of Kain, and of Nosgoth itself.
    To skip it, would mean that you’re cutting out the most important plot point, that Raziel’s cyclical nature is being used to alter time in a way that will benefit the Elder God. When Kain also realizes how important Raziel is, he decides that he could restore Nosgoth to health by restoring the pillars, while still retaining his role as balance guardian, and fufill the vampire prophecy.
    Thus thwarting the EG, and ridding his soul of the corruption brought on by Nupraptors madness.

  • @Ritchian
    @Ritchian 6 лет назад +15

    If I had to sum up the story of the Legacy of Kain series (minus Blood Omen 2) in one sentence, it would be in the words of Raziel himself. "What game was this, where every player on the board claimed the same pawn?"
    I fall quite firmly into the fan category of the Legacy of Kain series. It tells one of the more fascinating stories in gaming. Granted, much of it won't make sense until you reach the later parts of the series, but the story of Kain and Raziel is incredible in scope and the characters themselves beautifully break so many trends of video game protagonists. The story, the setting, the absolutely incredible voice acting and speaking a fantastic script. The series was great. It always made me sad that there was never any continuation to the series aside from a god-awful-looking free-to-play shooter that shut down a few years ago.

    I usually, like once a year. Just rewatch the story segments of these games here on RUclips. Because, even though I've played the games alot, the story is still fenomenal and I've yet to find a game series with depth enough to surpass it.
    And I whole heartedly agree with your judgment, the games are flawed but I still love them. And if you don't have time to play them all, at least watch the "tv-versions" here on RUclips.

    Answer to your final questions: Yes I have played all of the games in the series. It is my absolute favourite series, and Soul Reaver is my personal favourite game of it. The story, the characters, the voice acting of course! The world itself, the music, don't forget the music! I love this series and always will. I do feel it is underappreciated, but at the same time it has the most awesome fan base :)
    Totally agree with you about how Blood Omen 2 should have been what Defiance was! Also agree with the camera angle issue. Not sure on the reason for this in the last game.
    The spectral realm in Defiance is definitely more creepy. There's that one ear piercing scream that happens every now and then, and that freaked me out the first time, and was still pretty creepy each time after!
    And yes the ending made sense, while it was tragic for my favourite video game character ever, it still was good!
    Soul Reaver remains my favourite game. I was surprised to find that a lot of people struggled to like the SR because of the many block puzzles etc, I honestly never thought about that, I enjoyed every minute of the game all those years ago, and lost count how many times I played it haha.

    There was a game series I grew up playing as a kid. The Maximo Series by Capcom, it's got some motifs to Ghosts n' Ghouls but I've never seen anyone talk about them. Would you judge this one? Were those games hidden jems or am I nostalgia blind?

    • @CziffraTheThird
      @CziffraTheThird 3 года назад +2

      My personally most revered games of all time. Bold statement? Yes it is. But I could not be more emphatically, sincerely serious. Both Ghosts to Glory and Army of Zin are originally conceived(save for the common knight save princess story) unbridled masterpieces!! And yes the main theme for Maximo is the same in varied form to Ghosts and Goblins which is what you meant to say, both main characters on their last hit or bar of health is stripped down to their boxers etc. and the list goes on! I remember where I was exactly when I heard the rumours(which were indeed officially true and this was many years ago)that a Maximo III was being developed but then that very sadly fell through the cracks....but the more I reminisce back to this incident, the more I am honestly okay with it. The less Maximo gets dabbled and touched with at this point, the better!

    My journey with this series started with Defiance. I randomly found it on the shelf one time, perfect for drawing the eyes of edgy pre-teen me. I only ever saw a LoK game on the shelves that one time. Thankfully, the writing, dialogue, worldbuilding and mystery caught my attention enough to start looking for answers online. What a world to find.

  • @ChocolatierRob

    I love this series and I'm one of the ones who made videos for it. I made story walkthroughs for all 5 games, I basically made them into movies by editing the cutscenes with just enough gameplay to make them gel together (though in playlist form because I still had the ten minute limit at the time) and filled the description boxes with an assortment of extra lore, commentary, cut content , etc. I did the same for a game (not in a series) I'd call a forgotten gem - Vagrant Story. Excellent cinematic RPG from Square that is unfortunately overlooked.
    A series that I would _controversially_ refer to as overlooked is the MediEvil series, controversially because it is due to get a reboot soon, the only problem is that they did this once already and completely borked it up. The _new_ reboot looks set to be based on this failed attempt instead of the original games that I did and do love. Basically the first game had a Tim Burtonesque aesthetic very similar to The Nightmare Before Christmas that really worked for it but the first reboot just ditched this iconic atmosphere and made it much more similar to Shrek if anything. Now I like Shrek but Shrek humour is pretty far removed from Tim Burton humour and trying to cram cheap gags in every few seconds does not match the established atmosphere of MediEvil.

    Skipping SR2 would be a bad idea IMO. One of the most important elements added by it to the story is Kain's transformation from a pure antagonist to more of an antihero, a tragic pawn to the machinations of Mobius and the Elder God, cursed from the moment of his birth, and explains his decision to refuse the sacrifice. Also, it introduces the physical form of the Elder God, presenting it as a parasite of the wheel of fate, rather than a deity with the power over life and death.

    to awnser the questions in the end. I have never played any of the legacy of kain series and one of the games i personally love but feel is over looked is Age of Wonders 3 that game is one of the few that i keep coming back time and time again and is often overlooked by games like civilization. It doesnt have a lot of depth but i love the random map game where you can build your own leader and set out telling your own story of who you betrayed, aided, and conqured by either killing the ai in the game outright or forcing them to surrender and join you. It is an easy game to get into and learn the basics of but has the potential for you to dig and go deep into the mechanics. Personally I would love to see that game get a new installment with new classes units and situations to tell engaging stories

    Hey, great vid. The Legacy of Kain series is my brother's favorite and I grew up playing them with him (more like watching lol) but two games that come to mind (They are older mind you) are Red Zone and Desert Strike, both on the Sega Genesis, some of the first games I played as a kid and I was so blown away by each, I'd love for someone to make a vid on these. For your other question : Drakengard & NieR, made by Yoko Taro. The gameplay is lacking until NieR automata (thanks platinum games), but the story is like none others, thanks to this crazy man. Seriously he IS crazy, in a good way.

    I know this video is 4 years old, but I recently got the LoK series on GoG for like 8 bucks, and going back through them made me remember how amazing these games were (even the subpar Blood Omen 2, still passable imo) and left me yearning for a new game even more. Maybe the company that bought Eidos can either do a remaster collection to bring these classics to modern systems so many people can see what made these games so appealing and loveable.

      I would say that SR2 is necessary though. The moments, engaging speeches, and ironies in that are not to be missed, and Defiance is mostly a response to that game in particular as it deals directly with the fallout of all the events of SR2.
      Plus, it would be weird seeing an instant 180 in Kain's temperament without a good explanation and how he ran from Raziel at the end of one game then ends up looking for Raziel in the next. It's just too much left out without SR2.

    Weird tangential question but does Mathas buy a hard copy of each of these games and then emulate them to keep the collection in good condition or does he play them each on an original console(older pc games not included). Just curious.

    • @PixelLoungeRush
      @PixelLoungeRush  6 лет назад +3

      A mix of both. Depends on the game and if I have the means to record it. For Blood Omen 1 as an example, I hunted a boxed copy super hard because it was so hard to find one complete in box, but I emulated it because it's near impossible to get it running properly nowadays. Defiance I bought, but I also grabbed a copy on Good Old Games (GoG) and it ran 100% perfect on my PC.

    I remember playing defiance when I was a kid, if I'm not mistaken it was my second game in the legacy of Kain series for me, first one being Blood Omen 2 XD XD, it was quite hard to keep up with the story, but I was a stupid kid and pay it much attention, but it was still a very good and enjoyable game even for someone who didn't know the story and only after this game I got to play soul reaver 1 and 2
    Still sad there are no more games in this series, the voice acting and story were phenomenal for that time.
    And I totally agree that camera was awful, so many deaths because of it, especially on starting level with Raziel XD
    This marathon got me to this subchannel of yours, so keep up the good work, I love it!

    both Paul Lukather and Tony Jay passed away, but Alastair Duncan makes for a very well both Elder god and Mortanius, otherwise the next company to tackle the franchise, might be able to edit the passed voice actors, one can only hope that this extraordinary franchise, will be treated with respect and admiration

    the gungrave franchise seems to not get as much attention than it does, There was the ps2 game from 2001, the anime in 2002, and the sequel to the game overdose in 2003. and there is a VR game coming out this year called gungrave VR. I feel like the series needs a lot more attention. espeially the sequel game overdose and the anime

    I love the Legacy of Kaine. It is most definitely one of my favorite games of all time. And the speeches in defiance are some of the best, that Kaine intro monologue is unbelievable. Also HE WAS THE SWORD THE WHOLE FUCKING TIME! Mind blown

    There were some annoyances over the series, like the fact that blood omen 2 was not originally designed to be a Kain game, which resulted in some very weird moments, like vorador still living, but overall LoK is still one of my favourite game series.
    Having said that, I'm kinda glad that dead son was cancelled since early footage showed that it would be a reboot rather than finishing the story that Amy Hennig had weaved together so well considering the amount of interference that had come from the suits

    Eeh, someone who jumps directly from SR1 to Defiance would be extremely confused, story-wise. But I agree that Defiance's gameplay was really great for the time. The whole series (minus BO2 probably) would be a good candidate for an HD remake.
    One thing I'm surprised you didn't touch upon though, is the rather horrid sound design of Defiance. Sure the spectral ream had a wonderfully creepy atmosphere, but outside of that the sound effects and music felt strangely… weak. The most egregious example would be the spectral bosses in the forges. And sometimes you'd use an object and it would just kinda teleport onto its "keyhole" without a sound… It made the game feel almost unfinished at times and was really jarring. Not to mention some cutscenes that are completely devoid of music when they really shouldn't be (the final sacrifice notably).

    Easy answer on the camera, it went with the new combat system they lifted from Devil May Cry. When SR1 came out the 3rd person market was dominated by RE with it's tank controls and TR with it's block spacing. SR stood out by being free moving, where the combat was intentionally optional, you could change up your weapons in or use the environment itself against your enemies. It had the first non-loading world in a console game, the shift mechanic was revolutionary and it had the BEST camera of the generation. The rest of the industry quickly improved and we had great games like Onimusha but it was DMC that made jaws drop. Amazing fast action but with a crap narrative and it didn't matter, it sold anyway. Against that Blood Omen 2 felt last gen and didn't make sales. expectations. In turn Crystal Dynamics adapted the DMC style with cool tweaks to accomodate our heroes. They dropped a lot of the depth and weapons since both characters were locked into using a sword but they still gave it unique flavor. With that combat came the stationary camera as moving ones at the time couldn't frame the action properly. That was also the reason they changed Raziel's ability to shift on the fly to a set location, it was for camera and puzzle framing.

    Strangely I played and own every legacy of kain game but this one and blood omen 2. and if you want to play a short and underrated series you can try the gargoyle 's quest games but keep in mind physical copies of 2 and demons crest are a bit expensive

    I have not played the legacy series. I can think of two series I would like to see come back from obscurity, both had their first two games great and a relatively terrible third games, Parasite eve, and Dino crisis. Parasite eve is definitely an underrated rpg, and I loved the original two Dino crisis games, like a fast passed resident evil. Something about dinosaurs that make good suspense horror. Either remakes, or resurrections would be wonderful.

    This comment is so late but yes LOK is something I grew up on and know and love as a series...so under rated I feel sorry for those that have yet to give it a chance. For me another series that isn't too much talked about is the Tenchu series. It's stealth and stealth kill gameplay are one of the first of it's kind and level design is also very unique and fits the story of every game mission perfectly. If you ever get to read this I think Tenchu would be a good older game to give a little more light that it more than deserves.

    I also appreciate this. Legacy of Kain was my favorite series next to metal gear. So the idea of kojima redoing them. It would be astronomical. I love the orignal blood omen and kain is definitely a favorite character so a remake of the first game would put it back on the map. And maybe rebbit the series. The one they cancelled I feel wasn't going to make it any better. Even though game play looked fun. They could also keep it going. Of course Simon wouldn't be doing kains voice which is regrettable. He made Kain. But Kain still lives and raziel is the soul trapped in the reaver. We could continue kains story and maybe even more evolved with the introduction of a new character. Possibilities are still endless with Kain still alive.

    Big fan of LoK. Greatest ending ever to a game. You do not need to understand everything. You walk the path of Raziel who got what he got and Kain - who tosed a coin. Maybe the gameplay was not perfect, maybe it's generic. That was one fucking awesome story. The moment Raziel get the final upgrade for a weapon. The moment Kain get the final upgrade for a weapon. Awesome story made into a game. Fucking art.

    I wasn't pleased with how the game ended. I felt like there was/ should've been one more game to wrap it all up. The ending was set up for a final game. This is one of my favorite stories of all time; it should've got the ending it deserved. I'm sad that it didn't, but I am very thankful for the memories the series gave me.

  • @gonzo191

    I played LoK and I agree with the same play layout you suggested. Play BO1, SR1, [skip the sequels in general, maybe play SR2], Defiance. Defiance wrapped up everything that needed wrapping up so nicely and the only "bad" thing about it would be the camera if you're not used to the DMC at the time.
    One series that I feel is underrated is Front Mission with 3 being my favourite because it was so streamlined, 5 being my least appreciated because the story felt too anime and battles were too drawn out and Evolved being the worst because it's not FM at all.

    defiance explained questions but the ending to defiance was open ended to lead up to the sequal , which the sequal was in development but because of the buyout of edios by square enix / merger and the cause of the death of the elder god tony jay . the sequal was in development by crystal dynamics and another studio as well but it was sadly cancelled .

    Kojima?! I think i understand your opinion Mathast, but I honestly think that Hidetaka Miyazaki would be one if not the best director to have on a Legacy of Kain/Soul river reboot.
    Think about it: a soulslike derived combat system + the type of "hinting to the world's lore" that the Demon's souls+Dark Souls+Bloodborne games do so excellently (one of the main reason that make them my favorite games ever)
